    Good overview. I just completed moving to a new home with 4 acres of mostly grass and a number of mature pine, pecan and oak. Historically I learned that my property (Southern Georgia) was once a soy plantation then a pecan orchard, then a home for 30+ years with some animals involved (horses, goats, chickens). My soil profile is heavily compacted with 3" dense grass roots then 12 inches of red clay dirt with virtually no organic matter. I just finished creating my plots last week (4'x 75' , 4' x 75', 4' x 25', and a 20' x 75') as follows: Step 1 Tarpped to kill grass and weeds. Step 2: Mechanical till with a PTO tractor to break apart the root layer to enable broadforking with a reasonable level of labor. Step 3: Broadfork to 12" deep aggressively. Step 4: Added about 1/2" to 1" thick organic bio char (Wakefield). Step 5: Till again. Step 6: Added 4-6" organic compost (cotton compost). Step 7: Till again. Step 8: Compacted this ultra light soil with my lawn mower. Step 9: Planted various crops in some plots and in my large bed added a spring mix cover crop. I plan to move to no-till after this initial setup and expect some broadforking for a year or two. Then I plan to move more into no-dig where I expect that I will retire the broadfork to infrequent use (i.e. carrots as you say). This was a huge amount of work and huge cost (4 yards char and 60 yards of compost and tons of manual labor). One area of concern for me was that I do not truly know the history of my soil nor did I want to spend a bunch of money on a bunch of tests looking for contaminants of various types. Adding the bio char should provide us some level of contaminant segregation as well as nutrient/microbe reservoir capabilities over time. We shall see. I also have a number of Vego Garden raised beds we are harvesting out of now.

    My Broadfork has been one of the best investments ever!!! I watched your video evaluating the various brands. It is great for removing the small root bound plants and small trees and saplings as well. I am 66. Been gardening all of my life. That fork is my new friend. Thanks for this and all of your suggestions.

My niece Crissi Lee started a gardening group and I think you offered us some great tips from your video how to start a garden with your mom especially that trip to Home Depot .... thank u for your videos you help all us grow better food. I just bought my rental in Tennessee but the ground is clay and rocky similar to San Diego, but with more rain. I haven’t started my garden yet as I have the house to work on first. Can’t wait to watch u start your new garden I will be watching for sure !!! Your very inspiring 👏👏👏

    Where I live, the soil is a mixture in terms of structure and type. One part (even within a metre) can be clay and another part can be rich in visible fibrous organic material on the surface. If I dig into the soil, it gets softer as it gets deeper...but it isnt the standard and typified top soil...it is not black but more very faint greyish-brown. Once upon a time, if my hands got some surface soil on them, the tips of my fingers felt like they were pushing through a plastic bag. I often had the sensation that some plastic was stuck to my finger tips. These days, I just hoe weeds from the surface and use various transplant plug / modular cell depths so that I get to leave behind a quantity of compost and root system in the soil when I am clearing the beds for something new. I use a rake to tilth the bed surface. In the mean time, I am slowly applying the Ruth Stout and Charles Dowding method of using compost as a type of mulch / soil feeder.

    I would love to see a video of you terminating your cover crop. My soil is very sandy. I mean like the beach. I have gobs and gobs of black cow and I am starting a pretty serious garden this year. I am already thinking of cover crops because I know the organic matter is super low. I am unclear of terminating it through. I guess I will look around. Thanks for all you do. Janice

    I have experienced that there is a noticeable difference in the types of compost that can be acquired where I live. When looking on the market for compost be sure to ask the supplier what types they sell. Just because you ask for compost does not mean you will get a high-quality batch. My observation is that an aged mushroom compost is better than a municipal compost from the city or a mix of topsoil and compost. It also is not fun pulling out plastic and other junk from your garden throughout the year!! Thank you very much for this informative content too.

    Logans Lab is fantastic and good pricing. Saturated paste test is most valuable because it shows water soluble nutrients. Check out the Soil Doctor on Instagram he will help you understand your test for an inexpensive price. Filtering is helpful for better soil biology and less contaminants but you can grow without it too. Chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals are the most concerning your city will give you their water test upon request or you can test at your tap as well.

    have you done any WCA or water soluble calcium soil drenches? I am curious what the effect of such an application would have on that clay. I just saw a discussion with a cotton farmer who no longer tries to increase nitrogen, during the growth process, because he gets the same boost of growth from a foliar spray that made calcium available, but his plants did not get stemmy, the leaf nodes were closer to 2 inches apart, so all the energy was put to fruiting instead of structure.

    There is a principle called "balance". I agree wholeheartedly with amending soil with organic materials, like compost. It's great. So much so that some might conclude that a soil of just compost would be even better. It's not. There is a limit on how much organics you can incorporate into the soil and be able to call it "healthy". There's a word which you used in this video that I hear a lot in gardening videos. 'Nutrients". Everybody talks about them. Nobody ever defines them. So, I looked it up. Here's the list I found.

  • @StephanieSomer

    @StephanieSomer

    3 жыл бұрын

    My post got truncated somehow. Here's the list and my comments: Nitrogen Phosphorus Potassium Calcium Magnesium Sulfur Chlorine Copper Manganese Iron Boron Molybdenum Zinc Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen You'll notice that except for 3, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen, the rest are all minerals. Topsoil has a low degree of minerals in it as compared to subsoil. Much lower. And subsoil is the reverse. It has a high degree of minerals but few organics. I wholeheartedly agree with amending soil with organics, like compost. It's great stuff. So much so that some might conclude that a soil of nothing but compost would be even better. It's not. If you were to create a bed with a concrete slab and 24" of compost piled on top it wouldn't do nearly as well as one might think. So, do I believe you should till? Not quite. At least not nearly as often as is done on commercial farms. I would contest that an initial very deep tilling to bring those nutrients up, and then an occasional, (every 3 - 5 years), to replenish those nutrients would be just as advantageous and necessary as the compost amendments. Compost is very high in the nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon that plants need. Not so much in the others. Balance. Remember it.

    @@bustersmith5569 TN does have a sales tax, and in parts it's pretty high. I'm from Memphis, and in the city sales tax was 9.25% when I left, but statewide I think it's 7? East TN is the place to be. West TN has little to offer, and central TN isn't exactly awesome unless you like flat -- which is good for row crops, but not such a beautiful place to live. I like the mountains and some woods even if it does mean it's harder to find flat spots to put a garden. Also ... it's hard to not find water in TN. I'm in South Florida now, which is a great place to go build some resources relatively fast, but it's expensive - particularly any amount of land, the property taxes are insane, and you need a permit to sneeze on your own property...
