I personally prefer a clean, single screen setup. So for me this is just another 4k monitor lacking a built-in camera, mic and speakers. I have Teams meetings on a daily basis where I share (part of) my screen, and my Studio Display does the job perfectly. Plenty of pixels to keep my notes next to the shared part. Great mics. Impressive speakers. It’s the all in one solution that does it for me. And after work I launch Lightroom and start editing my photos, which works fantastic too. Also, couldn’t care less about the power cable. I wasn’t planning on disconnecting it anyway. The Studio Display remains a niche product however. It’s a very personal decision whether or not it’s worth the money compared to less expensive alternatives that offer parts of the all in one experience.

The biggest problem i have with the power cable being more permanent on the monitor is the fact that when it wears down, you have to send in the whole monitor back to repair it. Whereas if you could just unplug it, you can just buy the cable. Otherwise i also like the PPI on Apple's display much better. It is much better for the GPU, whereas my BenQ monitor has really a lot of problems keeping up. And i have a Mac Pro 2019 with an AMD W5700X with 16gb VRAM in there. Even though that GPU is certainly not the best and by now even outdated. It shouldn't have such a problem! I'm thinking of getting the 6K anyway, (i already own the $1k stand) so i just need the monitor. I do like a dual or triple monitor setup though. I have now 1 32" 4K display and it's just not enough space for me.

I am huge fan of BenQ Monitors. I have a couple, both 27-inch HDR with speakers, great connectivity options and remote controls. One is 4K / 60Hz and the other 2K / 144Hz. The specs are not as good as the PD3220U monitor, but they were excellent value for money when purchased, and suit my needs. I often use the 2K monitor with my M2 MacBook Pro, M1 iPad Pro, Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, and an AMD 7 Series Ryzen 7 Mini PC, whereas my Windows Dev Kit 2023 and Apple TV 4K is connected to the 4K monitor.

I have this monitor, it's a great screen, but as a Photogrpaher, it's super annoying that the contrast is SO far off the Mac displays. A lot of my clients will be viewing images on an iPhone, iPad, MacBook etc, and the BenQ just cant replicate the same contrast, editing black and white images especially I have to go back to my MacBook screen to see how it will read.

My main usage are Lightroom CC, photoshop, Final Cut Pro and general media consumption. I'm going to be on a 3 month road trip doing a few custom dog portraits. traveling with my 13" macbookpro I want a monitor to plug into it to have a larger editing surface. I might be a bit confused but I'm guessing here that to work the BENQ needs to be plugged into an outlet and not just connected to a fully charged laptop. Is that correct? Wondering how I might be able to use a larger monitor when I don't have an outlet at the moment. Maybe I can't .

Hi Mark, enjoyed your video. I am currently in the position where my ageing 21ins iMac is no longer supported and am now facing the inevitability of a replacement as I can no longer download certain programmes as the old IOS won’t allow it. For instance I can’t actually use RAW files from my new Fujifilm camera as they are just not recognised! As someone not particularly clever at “tech” my obvious choice is the new M3 24” iMac but I quite like the idea of a 27” display for photo editing which would mean the MacMini and a third party screen. My fear is that if I go for a mix of Apple and Non Apple products I will run into incompatibility issues that would quickly outrun my limited expertise. The cost isn’t so much of an issue although I would struggle to justify the Studio display option. Do you think I am worrying unduly or am I better to stick with the simple option? Even the 24” option is larger than my old one and the resolution is going to be streets ahead so possibly I’m thinking too hard about this? Thanks.

@@MarkEllisReviews i cannot believe i'd struggle to see the difference between 218ppi and 140ppi. those are big pixels. i work almost exclusively in text (whether code or prose) and that would be intolerable for any length of time, i suppose unless i just made the text really big and sat well back... (the only 4K monitor i liked was a 24" one; still not quite retina, but close) I wonder if what you're getting is the effect of it being 32", which I think means macOS will be defaulting to a "looks like 6K" scaled mode, which we're less familiar with (and we know what familiarity breeds ;-) but if it doesn't default to it, it looks like that's what you're using anyway) - and that, unlike the Studio Display, it has HDR10. I wonder if in some situations that means it (whether the mac or the monitor) doesn't have to dither colours, eg: text/background colours. Apart from that, there's a lot to like in this monitor. If only they did one at Retina specs ;-) But yes, if the primary activity on it is video editing as opposed to concentrated text work, which I imagine you actually get done more on one of your other machines, it's probably better suited to that task, because of the size and the HDR10.

I need a new 4K monitor for my upcoming Mac Studio or Mac Mini music production setup, and. I'm currently on my iMac 27" from 2015, so time is up for a new setup. I'm also really interested in a 32" now (not bigger), so I've been looking as this for a few weeks now. ONE big question now: Is the BenQ PD3205U (32 inch) a good buy? It's much cheaper than the PD3220U. Also 4K. I just need a great looking 4K monitor for my Logic Pro, and watching casual youtube videos, nothing more :) Much difference between the two? :)

It arrived about 2 weeks ago, but I couldn't check it out until the Mac Mini arrived, so it just sat on the floor in the living room :P But NOW it is hooked up, and I'm typing on it right now :) So how does it look compared to my 5K iMac I hear you say? :) It looks bloody good!!! Seriously, I can't really tell it's a 4K monitor, cause it looks 98% just as clear as the 5K iMac!! No pixels in sight! It's like having a 32" 5K iMac, which would have been a dream :) I am beyond happy I bought this, and can't wait to get on with the music on that bigger screen :) As I said, I'm only gonna use it for music production and watching 4K youtube videos, and for that it's a dream monitor :)

Great Review! I noticed in the specs you gave that the BENQ isn't as bright as the Studio Display. Have you compared the brightness levels side by side? That might be one difference between these monitors that would give me pause. That, and the fact that I love the glossy 5K bright picture that the ASD gives. Coming from a 2017 iMac with an even BRIGHTER display would probably make me stick with the ASD. To be fair, I've had a BENQ monitor some years ago (back in the old 1080p days😄) that I was really happy owning, so I know they make great monitors! Thanks again for the review!

I'm currently on my Apple Studio Display, and before it I was on this exact monitor - the BENQPD3220U, and was using this for 2 years well before I switched to the Apple Studio Display. The BENQ isn't as sharp as the Studio Display, and at only 4K (versus 5K), there are scaling issues with the screen. The only thing I miss about the BENQ monitor is its 32" screen size. For Apple users, I think understanding the principle behind Retina display and doing the math will tell you that 5K, at 27" is the perfect, linear scale which the Studio Display give you.

Interesting video, thanks, and equally interesting set of 300+ comments! Right now, I'm mainly interested in resolution. I have a Retina (ie5k) iMac. I find the 5k display setting unusable because text and icons are illegible at that setting. (Or am I missing something? Is there a way of using 5k resolution (for best photo display) while having text and icons enlarged? I don't think so.) So I have happily used it for everything, including photo editing, for almost six years, on the 3200x1800 scaling. The 2560 scaling, where the native pixels fit neatly into the displayed pixels, resulting in theoretically clearer text, makes everything too big, with not enough real estate on the screen. Talk of some massive impact on speed because of scaling doesn't convince me; this has not bothered me, nor has the fact that 3200 scaling means everything is theoretically compromised by the scaling. I now need to replace the iMac, which means I have a wide choice of screen sizes and some choice of resolution. I don't see the point in 5k, or the cost of the Apple Studio Display. What I'm used to on the iMac (27in, 3200px) works out at 136ppi, which as I've said I have found entirely usable. A 32in screen running 4k would give 138ppi. I think that's my way forward. I'll certainly consider the Benq. If I'm missing a way of making 5k usable, I look forward to hearing about it.

I've had this exact monitor for years. I would not recommend it. The black levels and blooming are basically not good enough, it reminds me of my old TN panel. The panel is also way too dim for a good lit room. It's not nearly bright enough. Paired with a MacBook Pro it also has issues with flicker and ghosting from time to time which appears randomly and then (hopefully) disappears in a few minutes. I'm planing to replace this with one of the 4k 32' QD OLED monitors with a glossy screen that's coming out early next year.

What about Mac OS scaling? As I understand it, Mac OS isn't designed to scale at non-whole numbers, and so if you want to retain the size of elements you put a lot of load on the GPU and the result is antialiased in a somewhat messy way. On the other hand, if you stick with the scaling appropriate to the Studio Display you end up with icons and menus that are way too large on the 4K 32inch screen. It's a PPI/pixels per inch thing, with Retina being an unusual spec.

Most people can’t see the difference in resolution at normal monitor viewing distance, and a larger screen is more visually appealing than a super pixel dense small screen. I’d feel brainwashed if he went from a 32” 6k to a 32” 4k, but when you go up in screen size it’s very appealing visually, plus you get more usable screen space for multitasking. Doesn’t matter what the resolution is, bigger screen is more tasks you can have up at once.
