Why I Dislike The Truly Me Rebrand From American Girl

Ойын-сауық

Edit: If the audio is a bit weird around the 6:00 mark, I had to remove some audio and unfortunately it cut out my talking. Sorry!
So American Girl has released photos of the upcoming Truly Me releases and it is a drastic rebranding of the line. This line which was known for being the realistic girl of today will soon be taken over by coloured hair, rainbows and eyelashes.
As an adult collector, I'm not American Girl's target demographic but I still had strong opinions on this release and thus I wrote down all of my thoughts and feelings and turned it into this video. I have problems with the rebrand overshadowing Claudie, the painted lashes and cheap meet outfits. I'm also concerned about the direction AG seems to be heading in for future releases. Enjoy me complaining about the future of this line for 8 minutes while recovering from getting my wisdom teeth out. :)

The fashion looks cheap, the choice to give them all eyelashes is so stereotypical, and I don’t care for the excess of colored hair all that much. I liked it on Luciana, 89 grew on me after a while, even Corrine pulls off the style, but I honestly don’t think it belongs in the Truly Me line. My biggest problem with this rebrand is it feels like a diversion from the name “Truly Me.” The goal of this rebrand was to make creative, pretty, eye-catching dolls with all the dyed hair and white-washed features on DOCs and bright fun colors-the goal was not to represent young girls. The scant use of the Addy molds ties into this. These dolls, at least to me, don’t look like any realistic little kid I know and that’s one of the biggest draws of the line for me. As a current collector, I like dolls that look realistic and inclusive so I can create a variety of characters. It was for sure a draw when I was younger; I wanted a doll that looked like me. And I wanted a doll I could dress like me. I could somewhat match with my mini me during the InnerstarU days but if I was a kid today, there’s no way I would be able to accomplish that with the current trajectory of AG’s childish yet somehow hyper-girly clothes and accessories. For a brand based in empowering little girls, this feels like anything but. Maybe kids (and their paycheck-earning parents) these days aren’t interested in the same features of AG that I was, but I don’t know. The rebrand overall just feels disconnected from the values of the previous AG and from the feedback of consumers. And I HATE that it’s overshadowing Claudie’s release! It feels like Gabriela vs. Tenney all over again. Claudie deserves so much better. Disappointed that AG didn’t learn from the last time. I get they’re a business and businesses are focused on money, but AG used to be so much more than that. As previously mentioned, the company was about empowering the next generation of girls through historical education and modern representation. Claudie’s release brought some of that back into focus but again, Claudie is being ridiculously overshadowed. Thanks for letting me rant in your comment section, Ally, I had no idea I would write this much 😅

This is a safe space to let out all of your anger haha! I wanted an american girl doll so I could have a mini me. • @AbigailEmmaB

    @AbigailEmmaB

YES! I was thinking of this too! A truly me was my first AG doll because she looked like me and she was my “mini me.” While the truly me line has always had a problem with representing people of color this new rebrand is still really bad! When I look at the old truly me dolls I can picture my friends, family, and children looking like them but literally only three-five of the new truly me dolls look like anyone I’ve ever met in my life. This rebrand makes it a lot harder to find a doll that looks like you which I guess makes sense for Ag as a business because more people will probably buy cyos but it’s still frustrating. :/

I’m an adult collector, and I like the new rebrand , except the fantasy colored hair . The new outfits are cute , but I redress my doll’s in more realistic fashions . The painted eyelashes don’t bother me, I think it’s very cute on Claudie, and TWBU dolls , but I was hoping they wouldn’t overdo it… I agree all the pink/sparkle will catch the eyes of kids, so Mattel will probably be successful in that direction, but if they want to keep the adults interested they need more attention to the historicals , separate fashions , and leave the painted lashes off a few.

Okay after watching everything I get it, I really wish AG would go back to how you could say luxurious? Or simply just chill and exciting, like back in the early 2000s, focus on the historicals and give the TMs pieces as appealing and actually youthful like back in the late 90s to mid 2000s, I agree wholeheartedly on the justice comparison, it's giving how when that store rebranded to add "Just for girls!" It's just so confusing and stereotypical. I like the lashes cause I saw them as just natural? Didn't see them as makeup mascara, so if you're gonna put them on the dolls, do it on everyone, or just don't do them at all, plain and simple. Glad they're using some new and old molds but gosh the prices and clothing are such a turn off for me, looks cheap but it's very expensive.

You basically described why I have bought one thing from American girl in the last 4 years. It’s bright and in your face. And these “high end dolls” are just getting more poorly made because it’s not about empowering girls anymore, it’s about money. This isn’t what Pleasant Rowland wanted this company to become. I will continue to purchase my dolls and doll clothes from eBay, mercari, etsy, and facebook. Because they have what I want and what I’m looking for. It makes me sad too because when I have kids I want to share this incredible doll world with them, and even with my niece who will be one soon. But it just isn’t the same

For the eyelashes and new eyebrows, I think the large amount of space between each singular hair seems too wide and they are too dark (especially on the blonde dolls). I'm just seeing too many lines. I think lashes are more subtle on a real person (not wearing make up) and I think aesthetically it doesn't look right on the dolls. I thought the same thing about the new meet outfits, that the clothes looked like something you'd find in Justice years ago! Trendy, not timeless. They kind of cheapen the brand. And Claudie should have been on the cover of the catalogue. They did the same thing with Gabriela by introducing Tenney, Logan and Z shortly after her. But this is worse because it's only been two weeks and she's competing with 25 new dolls!

This rebranding honestly makes me want to cry. I haven’t cried yet, but I think I will on the 8th. I hate change and that’s not an exaggeration. I am SO SAD that the Truly Me line is changing because I am not going to be able to get the dolls I wanted that hadn’t been retired yet. (44, 84, 80, 85) I also don’t like the eyelashes. The only dolls I am okay with having them are the WBU dolls and Corinne. I’ve also been trying to stay off of AGIG because this change really upsets me. I hate it. Not only are they retiring good dolls, but they are all replaced with painted eyelashes, which are really weird to me, because when you put them on the top and close the dolls eyes they still have eyelashes. Also the gender thing, I didn’t even realize. Also I hate that the boys dolls have different face moles when they can have the same heads and bodies as the girl dolls. They shouldn’t have used Kayla’s face on Logan, as that Mold was only to be used for Kaya. The coloured hair is better when is in streaks. I do know kids with dyed hair, one boy on the bus changes his hair colour every week. But every kid o know with coloured hair had very short pixie cut hair and more red-purple colours. On Isabelle, you could take her highlight out and Luciana’s (who I own) streak is super easy to hide. But I when it’s at full force you have to rewig it. The clothing is all bright too. For one thing, I never wear dresses or skirts without pants. I wear a long sleeved shirt and leggings in the winter and shirt sleved shirts and leggings or shorts in the summer. I have one dress and one skirt. The skirt was for my Halloween costumes. I wear a school uniform. It would be better to have one meet outfit that’s a plain shirt and jeans, one that’s a skirt, one that’s a dress, one with leggings and the other I don’t really care. Better yet, why not have the outfits be blank and come with pens so girls can draw what they think the meet outfit should look like. Then they should rename the line. Better yet, delay this until next year. Maybe they should retire Claudie for two weeks or release nothing new for an entire month. In that time, all American girl posts about is Claudie, basically give Claudie all this marketing or release a bunch of new things for her so Claudie gets the marketing she deserves. They should realize that Tenny got hated because she was a blond white doll who overshadowed a black disabled (she has a stutter) doll, Gabriella. Then, they should bring back the books that came with the truly me dolls when the first released. I love the idea of writing your dolls story, it encourages creativity. I remember in a magazine poll they had “how do you express your creativity?”. I never did these polls, but I’m upset they didn’t include “writing”. They should bring this guides back. Maybe they could also at a part of how to draw your doll, how to take photos or make a stop-motion. Or history of the brand. They should encourage creativity. Or real world experience. I think Maplelea is one step ahead here. Maplelea, the Canadian version of American girl dolls and the closet to ag is doing something right, encouraging real world activities, includes journeys and has little internet things. While the dolls look kinda creppy, they are doing something right here. I would and still would, have loved this to come with truly me dolls. It feels like something I would do. Something to put your phone away. Something to collect. If they move in this direction, I would only get second hand dolls. Unlike you, I can connect because five of my dolls are second-hand, although they are better as a gift. I’ll make my school uniform for my dolls and write stories for them. I hope this rebrand is a massive failure for the company. If they go nearly bankrupt over this, then they would change it. Or it receives backlash or someone in the company is found to have done something terrible and only worked in these dolls. They can have these dolls and I’ll buy everything second hand. I felt like in the last there were more real world activies. There were cookbooks, (yes and I had one and lost one) plays and craft books for the characters, I found my Samantha play recently that I nearly did but everyone was in summer camp. Maybe I’ll do that play soon or turn it into a stop motion. Maybe me and my friends will do it randomly for fun in my house. Maybe I’ll turn it into a storyboard. This is what I want for a rebrand, a return to the past. Creativity encouraged. If I become the CEO of American girl, I’d change it into a line that is trying to promote, in drawing, writing and filing and allowing one to be connected to their doll.

It seems like I'm the only one here who likes the rebrand, so here's my opinion haha. I'm actually really pleased with some of the new features. I wish they wouldn't put the eyelashes on every single doll (I really hope they don't rerelease old dolls with them) because it just falls right back into every doll looking the same. I love that there are so many new doll face molds, and honestly I'm happy that the new characters have a name and a story instead of like #89 or something. I do wish they'd keep making more male dolls with stories too. The older crowd seems to largely appreciate historical dolls a lot more, but I don't think that having colored hair and modern stories is a bad thing. I'm glad AG is moving far past Pleasant Companies obsession with stories that are always just "I wish girls could ride horses too :(" Because women's problems always have been so much more complex and important than that. And having male dolls doesn't disprove that, it just invites boys into a space that is generally feminine which is the DEFINITION of inclusivity. My only criticisms: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PUT CLAUDIE ON THE COVER. American Girl is starting to make a pattern of leaving girls of color in the shadows in favor of releasing something bigger and better right after. If you're going to make cheaper looking clothes, make the clothes cheaper.

If AG could at least go back to 2016, when I feel like the clothing and quality was a better, I be content. i agree with you! as soon as the leaks started dropping, i was pretty disappointed. The aesthetics don't appeal to me, and I think they're looking cheaper despite costing more. Lately I've thought some of their releases give more of a My Life As or Our Generation vibe, only with a steep mark up. The quality/value distinction between AG and its lower-priced competitors is disappearing in some respects.... like It's pretty poor value imo that one of those bland outfits + accessory sets totals at $62!! Honestly absurd... Also find it a weird move to put eyelashes on ALL the new girl dolls, seemingly to distinguish them from the few boy dolls they have.... I've been into AG my whole life and there have been many years where I've turned my back on them as a company because of poor decisions they've made. I just started enjoying AG again this past year, so I hope this Truly Me relaunch isn't a sign of more to come, because if so I'll be resorting to the secondhand/handmade market exclusively. Luckly AG has so much history, it's actually easier/more enjoyable to hunt for the older items!

OH MY GOODNESS THAT IS SO TRUE LOL 6:33 I feel like American Girl is trying to, idk, "take notes" on other doll and toy brands that are selling well, and applying it to their brand. I feel like that can be a good thing, but not usually, because what helped American Girl sell well in the past is how separate they were from other brands. American Girl seemed to be refreshing compared to other brands like Barbie (altho American Girl and Barbie are both owned by Mattel so...) I just don't like how American Girl is basically taking almost everything they used to stand for and throwing it away so they can make little kids want to buy a doll that looks like how they WANT to look, rather than a doll that LOOKS LIKE THEM. Adding the colored hair left and right, painted eyelashes, and clothes that are very bright and unrealistic just really taints the innocence and childhood presence that used to set American Girl apart. American Girl's simplicity and realism made their products seem worth the money and feel treasured. Raising the prices for the lack of quality is just ridiculous. I understand that in the end, American Girl is a company for mostly children and they have to make decisions that help them sell, and children don't pay attention to this kind of stuff. But I think all of us can relate to being a kid and noticing American Girl as different (in a good way) and wanting to have an American Girl doll instead of a Barbie when now, a bigger Barbie is what you're getting. Our Generation is doing a better job than American Girl in some aspects, and are way cheaper too lol 😂 I see the diversity in the new line, it's definitely there, but for me at least, the eyelashes and colored hair are an immediate turn-off. Despite Claudie's release, their lack of attention to the historical line was bad enough, but now this?!?! Sorry for the long comment lol 😂 PS. oh my gosh! i feel so happy someone feels the same as me. i felt so sad when little girls can no longer see themselves in the doll. why do girls always have to wish to be someone else? why can't a doll that looks like what a lot of little girls actually look like be special? i miss the comfort ag would bring little girls. now, it just makes little girls probably be like "wow, shes so cool, i want to be like her!" rather than "wow, she looks just like me! that mean's i'm special too!" (which is another reason why dolls NEED diversity, which is a whole other topic i could rant about). i wouldn't even recognize ag anymore, they blend in with everyone else. as someone who grew up with ag, my heart aches for what i once knew and im sad we probably won't ever get it back. what other popular doll brand has accessories and outfits that look like things people would actually have and wear? what other popular doll has historical dolls that shows that even in every era, girls can be strong and brave too? none! thats what made ag AG! what makes them unique now? the fact that their prices are too expensive. the fact that they price dolls that should be good quality when in reality, we have to check for defects every time. the fact that they're like barbie, but bigger. i don't know how ag can just throw away something so special they once had.

American Girl has lost the plot. As a childhood fan and adult collector of 20+ years, it's been disheartening to recently see them put most of their energy into chasing the latest doll trends and slowly losing their ethos and everything that made them unique in the process. With the 2010s Justice aesthetic, painted on makeup, and colorful hair, they're starting to look like all the other doll lines you can find on the shelves at Target and Walmart. There's nothing wrong with those doll lines, I actually adore a few of them, but they already exist - we don't need AG to mimic them. Over the years, AG has stood out for their high quality, innovative, painstakingly curated line of historical and contemporary dolls, accessories, and books. That was their unique selling proposition. There were copycats, sure, but none came close to hitting all the marks that the original did. And that made them massively successful, with a loyal, booming customer base spanning the generations. There was simply no need to foray into Barbie, Rainbow High, or Mermaid High territory to continue growing as a company and making enormous profit. And don't even get me started on how AG has been paying their historical dolls DUST over the past several years. That's the part of this that genuinely breaks my heart - I'd probably be more permissable with the colorful hair options and the cheap, kitschy clothes if the historical line was still being given the attention it deserves - justice for the gorgeous Claudi, PLEASE! Ok that's enough, time for me step off my soapbox and return to trying to talk myself out of purchasing a used Ruthie doll on eBay. ☺️

I had seen a AGYT video about the AG house. The person had parts of the AG video in their video, where dolls had names and what seemed like a title , Designer (something). It reminded my daughters and I of Barbie Dreamhouse videos. When the leaks came with the catalog, I instantly thought of Barbie Fashionista. They release about 20 dolls in that line. If this is the intent, what a great move by AG to sell dolls. Maybe in about 2 years the stock of the 25 TMs would be out or low, then AG would release 25 more. Everything with AG seems to be limited or around for a short period of time. Courtney's jean pants sold out, and never got restocked. WBU line seems to have been shoved in a corner, forgotten. They re-released Molly, then that was it.

I’m going to go against most people and say that I like the new lashes. I think the dolls without lashes look kinda weird now, like their eyes are bare. It’s like, I didn’t use to mind the line eyebrows, but now that they have the thicker eyebrows, it looks more natural (besides which girl would pluck her eyebrows to be so thin). I would mind if the boy dolls got lashes as well. Boys and girls in real life have eyelashes above and below their eyes.

I think a key issue with American Girl is that, unlike other fashion dolls, and most dolls marketed to 7-10 year olds is that American Girl, at its core, is supposed to be about NORMAL 9-10 year old girls. Their whole thesis was to tell stories about normal 9-10 year old girls at various points in history. I think about Molly, and how her sister Jill was in high school and that was seen as so old and mature. Now there are 7-10 year olds playing with “Monster HIGH” and “Rainbow HIGH” dolls. American Girl, when I was growing up in the 90s, said “Things can be fun and exciting right now at the very age you are.” I just don’t see that happening with most dolls anymore. Sure, there was still Barbie, but it was always clear that Barbie was an adult. Now American Girl is trying to compete for the same audience as Rainbow High, etc, and those dolls seem so much more glamorous and colorful (and the dolls/characters are older- didn’t a lot of the Monster High characters have boyfriends? So you’re trying to say that your “average normal 9-10 year old doll” is just as exciting as the glamorous teenager doll who WEARS MAKEUP AND HAS A BOYFRIEND????). From a competition standpoint, they kind of HAVE to make this change. If you think about it too, you wouldn’t even go to Hogwarts until age 11, so even selling the Hogwarts gear is aging up their dolls to 11-17 year old, instead of 9-10. I know all of this probably makes me sound super old, like I’m sitting on my porch saying “back in my day…”, but I’d like to think there’s some truth to it. Kids have always wanted to be older, but there was something so nice about knowing that you were reading books about girls who were supposed to be pretty close to your age. With the way that girls wear elaborate makeup younger and younger, with the ways girls in middle school even dress (all related to girls looking and acting older from a younger and younger age)… yeah, it’s not surprising that they made this change. I hope this comment makes sense!

I'm more a fan of AG than an adult collector (the dolls are mostly out of my price range). I own a couple of AGs I purchased used and have been working on to clean up and refresh. I do love the older Girl of Today/Truly Me fashions that had several pieces in the meet outfits or in separate outfits -- like the mix-n-match outfit collections they did in the late 90s/early 2000s. I own many of those old outfit collections and am blown away by the detail. (Like the wool varsity jackets with embroidered designs directly embroidered onto the jacket; it's not a sewn-on patch! Or fully lined and functional pockets.) When compared with recent outfits purchased on clearance from AG, I've been really shocked at the very low quality of them. They just don't have the attention to detail, high-end fabrics, and high quality that the older fashions have. I also agree with you about wanting separates in neutral colors that are easy to mix-and-match. That's why I purchased the older used outfits I did -- because they nearly all could be easily mixed and matched with many items to give my dolls a much bigger wardrobe without having too many pieces. (At this point I own about 24 outfits, nearly all mix-and-match style ones.) I don't care for the wild-colored hair and wish AG would offer each doll with the option of getting a wig with a similar hairstyle but in regular colors or getting the hair with wild colors. Because if I spend $115 for a doll, I don't want to have to spend another $30-$40 for a good quality wig to replace the ugly hair she came with. Also, I've pretty much given up on the idea of AG ever doing a doll that looks like me: fair skinned (like Blaire) with dark auburn brown hair and greyish green eyes. Finally, not a fan of the painted eyelashes and agree with the comment you shared about how it's gender stereotyping. It's surprising coming from Mattel at this point because they've been so conscious of diversity that I would've thought they'd be going more in that direction than to embrace old-fashioned ideas of female beauty and femininity.

I went to the local AG store in LA to look at the dolls and picked up the boy doll with blond hair. I think he looks great and the African American boy doll as well. However yea some of the dolls don’t look right with the eyelashes. They should have dolls with and without eyelashes imo so everyone gets to choose what they like. I’m also upset they removed the other boy dolls. I’m so glad I picked up the masculine Jess mode boy doll when it came out. They should keep the other boy dolls available for purchase. As for the outfit yea, I paied 30 after the discount for the sporty acessories and it was just a hat, pants and a Fitbit thing. My thing is being an Asian person, some dolls look ok with eyelashes and other don’t. Asian people genetically have shorter eyelashes then European people. So the Jess mode looks really weird with eyelashes but the doll with red hair looks fine with eyelashes. However I do not like the blond curly hair doll everyone is raving about. She I am not sorry I say this….. looks too “adult”. She basically a Barbie doll imo and that just annoys me. It’s one thing for some dolls to have eyelashes but for a blond doll like that to have eyelash is just stereotypical awful. And stereotypically everyone loves her. I buy American Girl because they look cute and not stereotypical. As for Claudie, I wish they did a double cover for her. A lot of magazines have two covers for their magazines, usually for special issues or one page being an ad. They could’ve had Claudie be on the top cover and the second cover be the truly me cover. I think that way everyone gets to shine. It’s sad to not have a historical doll have their own cover. I’m so used to it.

I'm a male doll collector so my history with dolls has been pretty messy as you can imagine. As a kid in the 90s, I remember seeing the old AG catalogues and the original TrulyMe ads (whatever they were called back then) and mistakenly thinking that meant I could also have a boy doll that looked like me too. Now that I'm an adult, I finally bit the bullet and got my first boy this year, the blonde boy in this wave. I like him a lot more than the blonde boy in the last wave who I was planning on getting instead (until they retired him before I made the purchase), but it's sad to me that there's less boys in this run than the last one. It's like pulling teeth to get any doll manufacturer to realize that boys also like dolls and that it might be just as important for a young boy to have someone that looks like him too. Now even when you're given one or two options for a boy doll, you're lucky if you get even one unisex option for a fashion pack. And you know I get it, obviously AG has the name of its target audience in the name, but on the topic of breaking some gender norms I'd really like to see other doll lines embrace boy dolls the way that Barbie has for most of its history and give us more options.

i've been really thinking about this today since the official release and I honestly am just coming to hate it as more time passes by. I hate how american girl is no longer what it used to be; i feel like if i just got back into dolls like this year or last year i wouldn't even recognize the brand that i once knew. there are So many other doll brands with this type of style AG is going for. bright hair, super colorful outfits, even the furniture is all becoming pink and bright now. what used to make AG unique is the fact that the dolls and accessories were so realistic. not in the way that realistic baby dolls are, or how clay sculptors make realistic doll food. but in the way that a girl could look at AG and see herself in it. now, the brand just makes a girl wish she was like her doll, rather than being happy that the doll is just like her. seeing everything AG releases now be sparkles, pink, or super bright colors (even everyday things! a car, a tv stand, a couch) makes me so sad because i immediately thought about the previous furniture ag sold in the earlier eras. the tvs were grey, the furniture was white, even that one desk chair is so realistic. it's like seeing everyday things that most people have in a miniature version; it's like seeing yourself as a miniature version. that's what made ag so special. some people might see it as basic but i see it as a way to connect with the doll, like she's living an every day life just like you. with the more neutral outfits back then, it was like wearing everyday cute clothes and having the doll match you. now, it's just that you have to go and match the doll's. i don't know if this makes sense, but it just makes me so sad how AG is losing its uniqueness. obviously, as an 18yo collector, i will be more nostalgic and biased as i witnessed the previous eras. little girls today don't know what ag once was (a brand that inspires girls through stories about girls just like them, showing how girls can be brave and powerful in every era of history, etc). girls now just see what they like: pink and sparkles, just like every barbie or other doll brands, so it makes sense why it would do well. it also made me sad to see the truly me line go from picking out a doll that is "just like you", to now picking out a doll that "fits your vibe". truly me isn't even about being "truly me", it's just another unrealistic doll that makes little girls wish they had everything their doll had rather than seeing that their doll is just like them. sorry about the super long paragraph, i just had to let this out.

also, about the painted eyelashes, i completely agree. i might seem hypocritical bc i literally own corinne, maritza, and makena, and they are some of my faves right now. but seeing the entirety of ag transform into this new look really shocked me. i didn't mind it with the named characters, i guess i just kind of saw it like oh well the world by us are older so that makes sense, or oh corinne is the goty so that makes sense. even with claudie it shocked me but i didn't think much of it since she was also a named character. but seeing this rebrand of the truly me just made me draw the line. i hate the bright hair, i hate the white-washed jess molds and nanea molds instead of representing darker features, i hate the lack of addy molds, i hate the lack of promotion for claudie, i hate the direction ag is going. i never felt this way about ag truly, i've been excited about almost every release. either way, i recently got my 19th doll last month, and i don't like the idea of having many more. i was super excited to see another makena mold and almost considered getting her one day, but i've just been really put off now as i keep seeing more about the rebrand. i love claudie and i hope she does very well. also omg pls i sound like such a negative nancy but i just rlly had to let this out lmaooo

I’m pretty sure I’d be classified as a younger AG collector and even I dislike AG dolls coloured hair. The only two with coloured hair that I sort of like are truly me 89 and 91, I actually don’t know why I like 91, her purple hair is just kinda nice (in my opinion), anyway, back to the point. I have absolutely no problem with the new line. Apart from the following: I don’t really like the coloured hair. I also think it is criminal how Claudi barely gets promoted. The fact that they are painting on eyelashes didn’t bother me at the beginning. However, now they are just using them way too much. I’d hate to have every AG doll with painted on eyelashes. I’m really hoping it’s just a thing that they only use for some dolls and not every doll from now on. I don’t really have a problem with the new outfits but they are kind of ugly but I’ll probably just switch them out if I get one of the new ones. I haven’t really been involved with AG dolls for the last about 8 months so sorry if this comment is pretty late.

When I first saw the new dolls I got really sad. Why can't american girl go back to the fun, sweet company with natural looking dolls that look more like children. The clothes were so much cuter and less cheap looking. I don't think this rebrand is going to do well for american girl and I am not planning on buying the new dolls. I don't like how they over shadow Claudie. I was so excited when she came out and how her colours were more soft and less in your face.

Ok so I collect barbie, MH, RH, and a lot of other brands of dolls. I recently came interested in 18inch dolls and of course came across AG. When looking for a doll to purchase the one without lashes looked weird to me. I mean, kids have lashes, babies have lashes they may be short but they have. I'm talking about bottom lashes. Lashes can make a doll face mold very different so it's a cheap way to sell more dolls. Again, I came from collecting other brands that usually use "makeup " so my opinion is biased. And for AG it must be very difficult to compete for kids' attention. As a collector myself I must always remember that these dolls aren't meant for me, I'm not their target audience, and AG dolls are no exception.

As a customizer I sometimes choose colored hair for the dolls I make but most of the time I am making something with a theme like a red rose themed doll or my sister wanted an ice themed doll so I chose colored hair for them but for some reason the American girl colored hair dolls like 87, 90, and 88 just look kind cheap, the hair is almost too shiny like a Halloween wig and I don’t like it very much. I don’t mind the touches of color like with Corrine and 92 or 89 but I’m not quite sure I like the newer ones yet. As for the lashes I actually like the lashes mostly because my Nanea is one of my favorite dolls in my collection. The clothes are a complete rip off though I could make something better in a day than a t-shirt dress. Also the part about 2015 justice is absolutely on point.

Kids like cute stuff. The kids today will buy these dolls and later buy these types of dolls as adults the same way AG adults did before them. AG has to stick to their main demographic which is kids. My kid has a vintage AG doll and recently I got her a modern Truly me, omg what a difference. The original AG looks like a grandma compared to the new dolls who are far more attractive to children. And yes my kid picked the colored hair ones no matter how much I tried to convince her not to. My nieces did the same and so did their friends. The AG company knows this and they are sailing forward. I myself was never an AG fan but I can understand the resistance the adult collectors feel to change since I feel the same way about Barbie. The changes are difficult but the motivations behind them are better in the long run. As an outsider I thought AG were just bland looking doll but now that they opened up in such creative ways I dig them in a way I never did before. Lastly, the "Truly me" has a lower price point to which can attract more customers to even notice these dolls.

Watch out. Rainbow High/Shadow High can be a serious addiction. Haha. I started collecting last summer (July 2021) when target had a few of the series 1 girls on clearance for $8 - $13. From then on I was hooked and I’ve since collected over 100 dolls in this line. Despite the questionable quality control (looking at you especially series 4) and the increase in prices with less stuff included, the dolls are just so awesome. Now a little rant to express my frustrations with American Girl: I am really disappointed in AG. I don’t mind the lashes because if I don’t want them on a certain doll I’ll just remove them with acetone hopefully. (I’ve become quite handy with it since collecting RH/SH and having to fix face paint errors and extra marks) I don’t mind the dolls with colored hair either. I just wish there weren’t so many. I mean, if I want a fantasy type doll I’ll just buy a Barbie, omg, or rh/sh and spend a lot less. American Girl provided something different for me and was the og doll line I started collecting back in 2011 (kit and ruthie) when my daughter collected. What pisses me off the most is the lack of marketing for Claudie plus how they made most of her collection unrealistic (and expensive af). These 2 new releases (Harry Potter and new truly me rebrand) totally overshadow Claudie. I also don’t like that they are getting rid of so many dolls in order to introduce the new dolls. Also, if these new tm dolls don’t come wearing clothes and still cost $115 I might lose it. On a side note, I have kids ranging in ages from 1 to 19 and I’ve never seen that many young kids (girls or boys) with colorful hair. Didn’t really start seeing that until my oldest reached late junior high/mostly high school. So I think the truly me line is straying away from its original purpose. Such a shame. End rant. I apologize for the length.

I'm honestly very sad they are retiring the truly me line. I feel like American Girl is just changing completely. I've never owned a truly me and I don't think i would go out of my way to look for one on ebay and places like that. I just recently added some Truly me's to my wish list and now i don't think i will own any. After seeing the leaks i can say i'm not impressed, they all have the painted lashes and different eyebrows which i have no problem with but i still don't want all my dolls to have them. I am glad they brought back some of the molds like the marie grace mold. They all look like they have streaks or highlights in their hair too. The whole point of the tm line is to find a doll that looks like you, with the rebranding of the tm line and seeing the leaks of the news dolls, i think it will be harder to find a doll that looks like you. I'm sorry for the terrible grammar and my VERY long rant. (i find some of the dolls in the leaks kinda cute) I'm not fully upset about the rebrand, but I'm still kinda upset

I think it is sad that Claudie's release is getting overshadowed by these new TMs. I'm almost 51 and I've been collecting AG for 10 years (since my daughter was 6), but all of my dolls are from eBay except Evette. And lately I've been buying custom TMs, so this release is good in the fact that customizers will have more face molds to use (they can always remove the wigs and remove the eye lashes if they don't like them). I know everyone has been wanting more Marie Grace and Nanea molds and now we finally have them, along with new Makena, Corinne, Joss, etc. I think we can see it as a win-win that AG will get their target market sales (little girls), but that adult collectors can still keep spending their money on customs with more choices available. I don't mind the new lashes, but I do agree that they look too dark on the blonde #27 lookalike. Great video - thanks for sharing your thoughts!

As someone who loved the Historical AG dolls growing up, its sad to see Mattel taking the brand in a bright, colorful, modern direction. And the more colorful hair colors work much better on Rainbow and Shadow High in my opinion, as they are themed around high fashion and monochromatic color schemes. I have also gotten very into collecting RH and SH, and for the price point, they are very impressive and aesthetically pleasing dolls in my opinion. AG should have just stayed neutral and realistic with the hair colors and focused more on the Historical dolls and their stories in my opinion.

As both a collector and instagramer I don't like the painted eyelash. every time the doll closes her eye the lashes will remain at the top of the eye. no one's eyelashes do that. Here's an example if I want to post a photo of a doll winking. I would have to photoshop out the eyelashes. That's just one photo no problem to retouch right? but what if I animated the doll blinking 24 frames/photos. I would have to retouch every frame or lower the doll's value by removing them.

This video is pretty old but I personally love the colored hair. As an adult collector who has dyed hair I actually feel like I’m included. As much as I love our natural hair colored girlies I love the dyed hair girlies just as much because they’re including ALL types of girlies. Like why should the little girls/ adult collectors have to pay extra for a custom wig for their mini me to look like them? I love that their catering to a demographic that’s been demonize/ looked down by society. For a long time and even now in 2022/2023 people will think that I’m and others who have colored hair are immature, lack intelligence, bad influences, etc and will not be consider a good candidate. That’s just exclusion at such a superficial level rate. I love that society is now just normalizing and even accepting people with colored hair into the work place/ generally speaking. Having colored hair doesn’t make me or other a bad perso, less intelligent and other things compared to my natural haired counterparts. Plus have you seen lids lately? Idk where you live but in my area I’m seeing more kids with unaturally colored hair left and right. American Girl is finally including all types of people! I do agree though that they’re slacking on the accessory/ clothes sector. I’m buying my first doll soon and god there are only 4 pieces of clothes/ clothing sets I’m actually buying bc they have mix and match potential. They’re also failing to realize that little girlies also LOVE to mix and match and have options.

Prepare for a weird rant that jumps around a lot. I don't like the re-brand. It feels.....cheap. Also if they're keeping the current boy dolls, then why can't I find them anywhere? I don't remember the number, but I was looking at buying a boy doll with black hair, almond eyes, and a caramel skin tone. I've looked everywhere but I just can't find him at AG. I guess I'm going to have to get him second hand or make my own. This is prolly super controversial, but I can't stand the Addy mold. I think it DOES NOT do justice to the character. The girl she's based on is so cute and pretty, then you look at the doll and it looks completely different in a bad way. (To me at least) I love the character and her story, but man do I dislike the doll. I. Love. Claudi. I don't get why they aren't marketing her much. She has an AMAZING collection that isn't too expensive. I *almost* bought her at the store the other day, but I was then offered a great deal by my parents so I got Kaya instead. (Deal was: I buy Kaya and her accessories, and they would buy Steps High. Fun fact: AG horses are super hard to take on the plane.) I'm not a fan of the lashes, and I think if they really want to do lashes they should make it an add-on service. It could be like the earrings, where for a fee you can have lashes added to your doll. If they add lashes to every TM doll, I'm going to have to just buy second hand or use nail polish remover, 'cause wow do the lashes look bad on a classic mold. I don't get why they are trying to market to kids so much. Like, it's the older audience who's paying for the dolls anyway. I wanted the dolls as a kid yes, but I only started getting them when I could pay for them myself. (Minus my first one. She was the last gift from my grandmother.) I wish they would do more dolls with hidden/hideable colored hair. For example, on my luciana doll I can hide the purple streak by letting her hair down. It doesn't show unless I put her hair up. I don't remember which one it was, but I think one of the GOTYs had a removable extension for the color, that way both sides were pleased. The clothes look kinda dumb. Why am I paying that much if I can make something similar for much less? Dress shirts are really easy to make, and don't take up too much fabric. For the price of one outfit I can buy 2 yards of fabric from my local crafts store, and make 10-15 outfits. I think the root of all this is that AG is losing interest in keeping a strong community, and is only interested in the quick cash grab of small children. This very same thing killed my favorite KZread channel. The creator lost interest in his community and now makes click-bait videos and only plays mobile games that prolly took 2 minutes to make. AG realizes that bright colors stand out to small children and when a small child wants something, it's near impossible to make them walk away. Parents would rather buy the cotton candy haired doll, than have their kid throw a complete fit in the store, so AG is hoping to profit off of that. And finally........What Rainbow High doll did you get? I just bought my first ones a few weeks ago. I got Daphne Minton and Delilah Fields! My Daphne came a bit messed up though, her arms are super loose and she can't really hold them up.

I'm not familiar with the historical stories (but I did read Addy's book) but I know a common critique of the historical line is that most black dolls stories revolve around racism, they can't have the same "normal" stories as a white doll. A black historical who wants to go to space? Nooo the 80's weren't big for civil rights history. I hope I'm explaining this ok as I'm not a POC, but it's nice to have a black historical doll not just centred around civil rights (though that is important to history)

For the case in colored hair I don’t really mind it and definetly a lot more adults have colored hair than young kids but the eyelash thing is very sexist like my brother has way longer eyelashes than me and my sister and that kinda proves that eyelashes have nothing to do with gender. They definetly should have released claudie after the truly mes or released the tms later and I bet claudie won’t sell well bc people won’t see it on the magazine and I didn’t even know she was out until like a week after

I hate the painted on eyelashes and the new eyebrows. It looks like the AG dolls got into some Anastasia dip brow in 2016. I don’t mind the colored hair as much, but there should be more options with natural hair colors.

This is why I will only be buying character dolls the colored hair was cute for specific dolls like Corinne, isabel, and Luciana specially when it’s added because of their story. Same thought with the lashes it was cute once or twice but all the time is excessive. Truly me was made to find dolls that look like you or like real girls. Now it just seem like a competition to the barbie “extra” line.

I agree with the colors of the rebrand I hate the bright colors the dolls are meant to represent 8-12 year old girls not toddlers it feels like welliwishers but for the 18” dolls

Just got 112 (Black (Sonali mold with an Afro). Hate that black meet dress. Looks so cheap. I’m getting a Maplelea friend doll on Monday. She has a cute, full outfit, and she costs less. I applaud a new face mold for Claudie. Not enough molds for Black dolls anyway, and the Black Addy and Sonali mold dolls are over utilized IMO.
