Almost across the finish line! I have some great PA's that are very caring and knowledgeable, that have been taking care of me. This is a great explanation of what being a PA entails :)

As a NP my niche ended up being Psychiatry which I felt very comfortable with early on in my nursing training. 30 years later I am now retired. I would say for most Nurses they find that “niche” early on. It seems to come down to what you feel most comfortable, most challenged, and who you help the most in your practice years. Of course it can change, but most people stick with what they enjoy most. Good luck Jon, you will need it (kidding), and here’s to the rest of your working life. Oh and now I’m retired, i really don’t miss it at all. LOL.

I'm glad you're a PA.I think you will be thoughtful .caring, helpful ,and compasionate. I have seen some PA's and Nurse Practioners and have received excellent care.25 yrs ago when I was 35,I looked into PA programs and there was one at a University 2 hrs away. Because of certain reasons I didn't pursue it .I wish you all the best with your new job.

Hi Jon. Some people are lucky in that they know want they want to do in life from an early age. It took until my mid 20's before I worked out what I wanted to do. 52 now and been in the second hand antique business since and loving it.😀👍

Congratulations Jon. I Just happened upon your channel and am enjoying it. I'm a PA also, here in California, and you've made a great choice. I've been doing this now almost 20 years and nearing retirement. I've been practicing in internal medicine, HIV care/Prep etc. And I highly recommend it. There's a big demand in the field and you'll have much more control of your career in the future. Best of luck...Marc

I think its cool I been a registered nurse for over 20 years and I worked all areas in the hospital. You will see how rewording your new career will be. Going back to school for PA, low gpa science and Caspa but going to work on it!

Im a travel nurse and love working with PA. Not sure if I would go for NP, if so, would only be doing aesthetics.

I can’t wait to start next year

My sister was a nurse for about 400 years. She earned an MSN (very annoying, because I was the smart one, but she followed through better than I ever did), she taught on the university level, and she started the training to become a Nurse Practitioner, which I believe is similar to Physician Assistant. I think she allowed some discouragement to stop her. But even as a retired nurse, she says, "Once a nurse, always a nurse!" Please speak out against discouragement!

Could you do a quick discussion of the difference between a PA and an NP? When I last researched a few years there seemed to be difference depending on the state. Some articles I read made it sound like one or the other was equal to an MD if working within your specialty but an RN outside. Others stated that if an MD had outlined a treatment plan, a PA/NP could make independent decisions WITHIN the plan. It all seemed very contradictory. Thaoks!

thank you for sharing some terms involving PA's with us, but personally you are about 4 months too late since i had a medical issue and have met with some sweet PA's

Clarification on NPs from an NP. In most states, NPs have full independent practice autonomy with out collaborative contracts with MDs, including owning their own fully independent private practices. We have specialty national board certifications in psychiatry, mid-wifery, anesthesiology, family practices, geriatric practices, Derm etc etc. We also maintain our RN licenses. Graduate school for NPs is usually 3-4 years beyond a BS in nursing.

If you’re going to be a PCP, do it now when you are young. Realize the crap they have to do. Then move on to a specialty. That will make you appreciate it much more

I thought physician has to get a 4 years pre-med, then apply for medical school which is another 4 years, then you do residency which range from 3 years to 12 years, the latter is for brain surgeon.

You are correct, but you do not need a four year degree to get into medical school. You have to finish all required classes. Medical school is very tough and not just anyone can get in. If it was easy anyone could be a doctor.

@@arnelcelestino9727 , you got that right! All physicians of a certain age have bachelor degrees because you have to! If presently it is acceptable not to get a bachelors, it’s not worth it. To just do the basic requirements for getting into medical school will NOT prepare a medical school applicant well for the MCAT (5 hour exam for entrance to medical school). After 2 years of medical school USMLE Step1 (8hour exam), then shelf exams (3 hours x7 ) after each rotation in the 3rd year, this averages one exam every month. Then USMLE Step2 CK and CS at the end of the 3rd year (9 hours and 7 hours respectively). Then USMLE step3 (2 days) usually after the 1st year of residency+ in training exams (usually monthly) during residency and let’s not forget the 60+ work weeks. Finally, the board exam at the end of residency. Being an MD is no joke. It ain’t for the weak! 😊 and this is for ALL MDs. Then fellowships, usually 1-3 years if one chooses.

PA s go 6 years , MDs 8 years then specialize- residencies fellowships . PA can specialize and do residencies as well which are generally shorter. What really counts is experience. Many MDs and PAs in primary care , hospitalists, ER, and some specialities do the same thing. A new PA grad vs a new MD resident grad will be at a disadvantage but 10 years in they will have similar experience- forget the stuff they don’t do and develop expertise in the stuff they do do. There are PAs better than MDs and MDs better than PAs.. you’ve got to find the person who’s best not the degree.

@@briano672 , I currently under supervision by PA for Prep and I like it, I don’t think we need MD for everything. The point is to get MD degree is 10 times harder than getting a PA degree. I heard getting nursing degree is also harder than getting PA degree.

Lol Med school is not “ 10 times harder” than pA school - getting in or finishing. I went to Duke Med for PA school and trained with Med students. Nursing degrees can be easy to start LPN then RN then msn then NP. Can be done over many years part time

Unfortunately I think you’d have to go through Physician Assistant school (2 years total) here in the United States in order to be licensed and work as a PA.

Let me ask you something..........where you someone who loved science in school? I want to become a PA but the one thing holding me back is that I dont love science. I can get through it and theres nothing I dont understand but I find it dry and boring. Is this a red flag for my future PA career?

Jon, at the start, did you consider a N.P. career instead of a P.A. My daughter is now a nurse. She works 12 hr. shifts in the E.R. in the city. She loves it. Has aslways wanted to be one.

Yes I have - if I started out going to nursing school, NP is probably the way I would have went! The careers are largely the same with a few differences - love my NPs and nurses too! Glad to hear she loves her job☺️

In my opinion, yellow mustard belongs on hotdogs and absolutely nothing else. LOL

Congratulations on becoming a PA. Personally, however, whenever I go to the ER, I want and expect to be treated by an MD and not a PA. I've noticed lately, hospitals are using more and more the services of a PA over an MD and that might be over cost, not sure. A Physician Assistant may just be well trained in many areas of medicine, however, personally if I were given a choice I'd pick an MD over a PA anytime.

As a PA of 25 years and a graduate of Duke the #1 PA school, I can tell you that experience counts more than the initial education. I’ve trained Med students, PA students and NP students. Having an MD after your name in no way equates with quality of care when compared to NPs or PAs - experience and investment in the patients experience is what matters. Find someone with experience and who loves what they do. If they don’t have the time for you don’t waste yours.
