I'm sixty. I have an extensive LP collection as that is what we had when I was a kid. I would generally transfer them to quality cassettes and listen to the cassette. Mostly Maxell brand these are now 40+ years old and still viable. The LP's meanwhile are generally mint, with no cover wear. When CD's were introduced I didn't really jump on that train until 1988-1989. Although it was a wonderful technology It is unbelievable today. I now buy used CD's at some places for 50 cents apiece...getting a chance to find some truly obscure music at prices i will take a chance on. True the artists don't really benefit, but do when I decide to dig deeper and purchase new. I find little reason to purchase an LP (Vinyl) over a CD though occasionally I will for old times sake.

Once I switched over from albums to CDs, in the end of the 80s, I have never looked back. I love the clear, crisp sound, no pops and hisses and skips, up to an hour of music, albums now have bonus tracks and extend an album length to longer times. And with Atmos you can get surroundsound that you can’t get with an album.

I grew up during the CD boom of the mid-90s up to 2004 and they were the only form of music worth buying albeit at £13 Plus an album not CHEAP. Now I have restarted buying CDs as the price for most of my favorites from the 90s is so cheap. Sadly, that won't be the case going forwards as physical music is making a strong comeback. Pick up your CDs now before prices rise again.

    1. Purple Rain has been reissued as a deluxe cd and it’s awesome 2. CDs can get “CD rot” which destroys the disc. Can happen a lot in discs pressed in the 90s for some reason

One of the challenges is we just don’t know how long CDs physically will last. Even ignoring CD rot (generally rare), some estimate it may only be 25-30 years, depending on storage and handling. Of course, I’m sure that number could be wrong on either side, depending on the plant. However, I do think physical copies are important! I have CD and Vinyl

That's been a "in the back of my mind" issue, but I am running into CD's that are coming up on 40 years and they are playing. Storage is key. Turning them into MP3 files and storing on an aux hard drive is how I do it , so the CD goes back in the box and is stored safely away. If anything...I have seen moisture is the biggest issue. Damp locations are particularly bad.

We have aging tests where manufacturers dunked cds in water, left them outside, left them in the trunk of a car for years and they play fine. I have cd-r's that are 20 plus years old left in the car in a binder and play fine. This has been road tested and those harsh conditions would age the cd more than normal. No one near either coast has made a claim that salt has left their cds useless. There have been claims of fungal attacks in tropical climates in but there is some debate about whether that individual cd was properly sealed. It was limited to one cd and didn't effect his entire collection. We are chronologically 40 plus years into this format and we know the 2 manufacturers who had defects were promo cds from Discovery Systems in the late 80's and PDO at one of their sites in the UK in the early 90's. Both did not follow redbook standards and used water that had metals and wasn't distilled. In the late 70's, the compact disc was set up with a "never buy again" approach and it was spearheaded by Philips and Sony and never before had two titans worked on a project of that scale. The argument you are making has been debunked time after time and time again. I don't know what makes everybody a freaking expert but there are some that are "grifting" against medicine to sway the opinion of voters and this is no different. I'm so tired of hearing we don't know the effects of the Covid vaccine. We know how to create a template to make a vaccine and there have been very few deaths related to any such shot while there's been a million deaths related to Covid. If you can get people to question vaccines when there's no contrary evidence, then SSRI's, gender affirming care, birth control, and most preventative medicine is going the way of the do-do. The insurance don't want to pay for preventative care and you are here with your layman reasoning and no doctorate but you are greasing their wheel. If you can convince someone that vinyl sounds better if the mastering is the same, you can convince them of anything. Mofi has been exposed and caught in a lie yet people still pay for audiofool pressings and even $40 plus for standard in print versions. The joke of it is that a high percentage is defective but many don't know that because they don't open it up; many don't even have a player. I must ask you. What is it with grifts and the questioning when the science is clear? Do you have no evidence? Go collect your records that slightly degrade with each play and respool your cassettes. Sorry to go hard on you but I spend hours a day fighting this philosophical battle with conservatives over health care. I was a Republican until last year and the anti-modernity and anti-medical wing has just taken over the party and the country in many respects and it's based on half truths. However what really gets me going is that they want to take decisions out of the hands of the doctors by law.

Ive been buying target label cds, also australian acdc labels, bootlegs sound better on cd, especialy the beatles, albums are mostly produced from digital souces now, so dosent sound well on old equipment, and decks can be expensive, yet cd has changed to sacd for them with extra cash, and hdcd and other cd improvements, you need a sacd player to hear the diference, you need thousands of pounds ive seen people waste to try and get a consistent sound without deteriation or wear of vinyl.

I must politely disagree with some points you made... The very first CD's sounded like crap due to aliasing. They discovered a low pass filter had to be placed ahead of the Analog To Digital Converter (ADC) to fix that problem. CD's then sounded increasing better as better ADC's and other electronics improved, and people ditched analog entirely and recorded straight to digital. In the mid ninety's the "Loudness Wars" began. Dynamic range went out the window as clipped and compressed music took over. "Remastered" is now the most dreaded word you will encounter on an old classic. Today, a few of the labels are going back to the days of mastering for dynamic range instead of just making it sound loud. ------------- If you want to avoid the hassle of re-ripping your CD's, just buy another hard disk (or two) and make backup(s), and keep one backup at a friends house in case yours burns down.

😢😢You know how many times you gotta play a record for it to start sounding bad? Thousands......... On a decent midrange table. You sound around 20. 50 years from now you'll be old asf. You will be in way worse shape than any record (vinyl) you may still have. Never forget in the end you lose everything you own including yourself. If your records are taken care of they'll outlive you by a lot .

Vinyl just priced itself right out of the market for me - new albums (and reprints) in the $35-45 range is absurd. I shifted to CDs a few years ago and have found tons of great buys. I buy almost exclusively at thrift stores at CDs are less than $1.00 while records are considerably more (and are typically in worse condition). People can argue for months about which one sounds better, etc., but to me, it was an economic decision. Whatever you decide - BUY PHYSICAL MEDIA!

My vinyl collection stops in theory around 1990 when CD's became the original format. I think having music from the 80's and 70's on CD is pretty awful. I collect almost only CD's from the 90's and 2000's in part because I like the design and artwork.
