Why I Chose Zeiss Batis 25mm f2 Over Sony 24mm f1.4 GM in 2021

Комедия

Is the Zeiss Batis 25mm f2 worth getting over the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM lens in 2021? Here are the pros and cons to getting the Zeiss lens, it's actually better in some areas.

Oh no, I was just about to ask you to take the Zeiss 18 2.8 for a vlog test as I have just found out about its existence. So I have the 16/35 GM with A7S 3 that sits on RCS 2 ; I was wondering if I could save some weight with the Zeiss offering while maintaining same image Quality. The thing is that we will be most part of the time both of us in frame: how would it handle the autofocus? So please, from one scrub to another, give it a go if you got the chance; there’s no pressure, we still got like 2 months before we leave 😹 do that and will give you a shoutout from the darkest streets of Bangkok as a thank you 🙏 😹

I had the Batis 25 for years but sold it to be practical when I bought the 16-35 GM. Although the 16-35 is awesome, I bought the Batis again as it’s light weight and warm color character make it my favorite lens for hiking trips.

From my own experience with Zeiss lens is that the Zeiss 3D Pop that everyone talk about is cause by the intense colors tones and unique bokeh.... You did a great choice going with the Zeiss it is lighter and cheaper and having f2 is plenty enough for what you doing. Plus the lens is sharp even if it is not a G Master.

I thought I was the only one who noticed the "3d pop" of the Sony Zeiss lenses until I watched this video. I have the very humble 35mm toneh 2.8 Sony Zeiss and it is incredible. I used to think it would be the lens I used the least, as I have other fast primes. Then I started taking it out a bit more, and oh wow. There is just something special about its look. It has this "vibe" to it. I never thought I'd be the sort of person to say this sort of thing. It is almost a vintage style 3 dimensional pop, that is just pleasing to the eye, yet it's still incredibly detailed. I've taken lame photos of the side of buildings, not thinking much about the photo, only to get home and find it was one of best photos I've ever taken, just from the emotion given off by the contrast of different textures and shadows in the photograph. I think in nearly all cases they should be up for consideration over the G-master equivalents.

I've seen this review way too many times. I've been debating between the Sony 20mm F1.8 G and this Batis 25mm F2. This one has sharp corners even at F2 (they get better at F2.8 and are excellent at F4), that Zeiss look and like mentioned less focus breathing in video. If you buy it used for a good price it's worth every dollar/euro/pound.

There was just something missing and I ended up having to work really hard in Capture One to get something OK-ish. Recently bought the Batis 25, 40 and 135 lenses and I’m stunned at the quality of images the Sony is now producing - they are now rivalling my Phase One back. Zeiss pop is REAL. Colours and warmth are stunning. I’ll never use Sony lenses again.

Is this even possible? .Why does smart phone and even GoPro or osmo action show blue skies and properly exposed face with no effort, but my canon and Panasonic mirrorless just can’t do it. Even in log, to keep the sky blue, my face is underexposed and that’s no good because I am the star, and want to be famous v-blogger. I can’t be the only one who can’t figure out this problem. Is there any proper camera that can do this? Do I need a canon C9000 or A7Siiii? You are the camera scientist Please explain and help us.

Interestingly I have the same experience. I have been using the Zeiss Batis 25mm for a few years, then sold it to buy the GM 24mm, after a few months, I sold the GM and bought the Zeiss back to keep for good. Reasons: 1) Batis 25mm is wider than GM 24mm & the images look more than a 24mm range image (critical to me), GM 24mm is just "not so wide" though its 24mm, not sure why. 2) I consistently find the Zeiss produces 3D pop image, love its rendering and contrast, GM24 does a good job but to me, not as good. 3) Yes, Zeiss is lighter and with all the benefits cheaper... GM are good (I own many other GMs, but Zeiss 25mm is a keeper for me). Cheers.

I'll weigh in with another reason, and as you put it 'it's not a good reason but it's important'. The Zeiss Batis lenses just LOOK so much nicer than the Sony Native Lenses do. Some people don't care about design or aesthetics and that's fine, but a lot of clients will notice who has the 'prettier' gear. Not to mention that when you're using something, you want to like how it looks. The Sony Lenses with their slightly off black/grey and Orange logos and rugged look, it's fine, but that smooth black metal industrial design of the Batis lenses is unmatched IMO.

Try out the samyang 24mm f1.8, only 220 or 230g, super sharp, smooth bokeh, and LOW LOW LOW Focus Breathing, you'll look totally pro, as long as nobody actually sees your lens 😂. Like no samyang lens you've ever tried.

I have an unnatural love for my 24/1.4 GM but then again I'm just a aurora pano photographer. I do have the Batis 18 as well. It's a nice lens for sure. Wish it was f/2 or 1.8 tho.

Tony 4 for my taste. For photo's I like blur but for video even 3.5 on the toneh scale was too much for me. Who decided blurred things looked better. Oh yeah, Tony.

Ah, the focus breathing. I've seen that on so many channels, and I always thought they were using some cheapo kit lens. Now I know.

I have the 18, 25 and 85 Batisisisses. Love the 85 (first I got), like the 25 (2nd arrival) but 18 is flat (for colour and contrast) in comparison. I don't use it much. Or even at all now...

Sell the 18 and get a 40. It should sit nicely between 25 and 85. And it also has best colours and pop.

if your use of both lense was on the same camera...then, for me the colour of the Zeiss knocks the Sony off its throne. Cheers from Victoria.
