"Trece Martires (Spanish for thirteen martyrs) is named after the Thirteen Martyrs of Cavite, a group of prominent Caviteños who were convicted of rebellion and executed by the Spanish colonial government on September 12, 1896, in the old port city of Cavite during the Philippine Revolution."

Everything is a choice. It all depends upon how far you are willing to accept the consequences/benefits/detriments of that choice. I, well my wife, bought property in Rizal Province - I just stumped up for it. We now live here for the peace, the relatively cool climate and, above all, the lack of expat-crap and baggage it brings. My wife and I were living in Hong Kong and, having bought property in the Philippines 3 years prior to relocating. We have since bought more property and have established a business and are doing just fine. We have residential and commercial properties, a decent income and no debt. I chose, or rather accepted, to live here primarily for her family requirements. I'm not regretting it .... yet. Who knows? It's the Philipippines.!

Trece Martires is a nice place because it's in the center of cavite. There are many roads/ shortcuts that will lead you to different places nearby the area. Originally I'm from Indang but aside from Trece, I also like Tagaytay, Mendez, Amadeo and Alfonso because of air quality, nature, high elevation (not prone to floods) and of course the amazing people.

I really appreciate your videos Steve. You've helped me a lot. Sometimes just by talking about daily things. When you said there's lots of churches around there and you said there's pentecostal, it got my attention, because I'm actually Pentecostal and having good church family is everything. It goes in line with how close you wanna walk with God, and who your friends are can determine your outcome. God bless Steve!

Interesting. If I were looking I would consider it. But often family ties to ancestral land and five or six sisters within walking distance have strong appeal to a Filipina woman. We are pretty well tied to our house in the province. I love to sit on the mountainside with my brother in law and enjoy the beauty of the trees and gardens and at sundown watch the fruit bats. But if we want to be in the city for medical stuff or food or night clubs with bands we can stay in hotels or apartments by the day for a few days or even for a month. A person can get a decent clean room with free breakfast, exercise room and pool for $60/night or $80 for a larger suite on Mactan Island. "Living in the Philippines" can mean so many different things. You can pick and choose and put together the life you need. It is almost like creating a lifestyle of your choice.

I am a few decades away from retiring but if I had all the time I'd move around many places and get to know the area. While you're still young enough and mobile definitely take advantage of that. You live in a nice quiet area although I been there once and not my cup of tea it's a place to chill. Beaches are a definitely must for me. I consider Saigro on the eastern islands and surfing to be very ideal.

I'm based in Ortigas. It's a major CBD but it's quiet. The malls are plentiful, all within walking distance and not crowded. Ortigas is in a very central location in Metro Manila with the Airport just 40 minutes to one hour away. Medical City Hospital is also close by and there are several health and dental clinics at the Shangri-La Plaza, Megamall, Podium and Robinsons Mall. There will also be two subway stations in Ortigas by 2030.

Walking distance to Megamall, Starmall, ShangriLa Mall, SM Light mall, self serve laundry, 2 Anytime Fitness, haircut 100p and on and on. I can get the jeepney to Baras (about a 2 hour ride 😢) for 70p when I go visit my friends on the weekends. I use motorcycle taxis to get around. I know Manila isn't for everyone. I am a bit surprised you didn't try it out in Tagaytay ? Perhaps not with the expensive view but reasonably near. Might be rental deals not far away ? I really like the cooler more comfortable weather. --- Lipa City has about the same or less low cost of living - $50/mo. rentals and up. Beautiful scenic area @ 1000 feet & a bit cooler than TM in a natural disaster protected area. --- I prefer Tagaytay's climate from the outside looking in - if not too expensive near there.

The ideal place is close to the services that NEED . Being close to the ocean may be nice but a sunami can ruin your day. Elevation is key as many rentals are in low lying areas because the owners don't want to live there. It really depends on what you think your NEEDS are going to be. You are going to have wants naturally and you can find a balance so make a list of your NEEDS and then your wants that will make you comfortable. You can find places that may need a little TLC but if you work with the landlord you can negotiate some of the costs. Paint is cheap and the labor is cheaper so you can make it what you want. I looked into the cavite area and it has its pluses and minuses depending on where you are at. I've also looked around the Queson city area and Bataan which are nice in some areas . I draw the line at a second class area and won't go below that as it's just not enough infrastructure for me. Staying healthy and having a good private care physician that can monitor your health is essential as you get older. An ounce of prevention is worth the pound of cure .

Someone fresh of the plane has no clue where Trece Martires is located nor if they don't know about your channel would even have it on their radar, so did you find it while you were in the USA and planned to live there or was it a girlfriend or by accident. Sounds like a nice location, but most people will end up where their girlfriend family lives. My girlfriend is from Davao, so I have given up on other cities that were on my bucket list, no family nearby, no happy girlfriend.

Thank you for your videos. I am looking to retire early and rent is a big factor. Is this place generally cheaper than Dumaguete for example? I watched a video recently that quotes two bedroom rentals at 60,000. To me that's almost the price of at home. I require three bedrooms minimum and was hoping to spend no more than 25,000, im not sure if I am being unreasonable.

I want to set the record straight. I did my undergrad at the University of Indiana. I wanted to do further education at Notre Dame but I couldn’t afford it. They wanted $60,000 US per year. So I talked to the Navy recruiting office and they agreed to pay my university costs at Notre Dame if I gave the Navy 4 years. So at the U.S. Navy’s expense, I completed my Masters and PHD at Notre Dame. I then entered the Navy and completed 4 years service. In the Navy, I worked in the area of hospital health care administration. I was 30 when I left the Navy and walked straight into a hospital CEO job in Chicago. From there I spent 25 years working as a hospital CEO and President in places like India, Hong Kong, Bangkok (2 different stints over 6 years), Manila (2 years) and Phnom Penh. I finished up my career in Dubai and retired from there in September 2022 (my Filipino girlfriend Sheila is still there as she works as a police officer there and has done so for 6 years). My next hospital posting after Chicago was in 2008 to a hospital in Cambodia. I was offered Jersey City and Cambodia. When I arrived in Cambodia in 2008, there was only 4 paved roads. Somehow in the late 1990’s, I also first visited Cambodia. At that time there were only 2 paved roads. I spent one year there then. Also, somehow despite being in Cambodia, I still managed in the 6 years up to 2010 to work as hospital CEO and President at a hospital in Bangkok (before transferring to Hua Hin). I earned $500,000 US for this and my apartment was 1,200 square feet and only cost $300 which my employer paid for. I get confused about this but the hospital had between 16,000 and 100,000 employees. Between 2008 and 2010, there was political unrest between the redshirts and the yellowshirts. Supporters of the military blocked access to the hospital and demanded money from people trying to enter the hospital. I arranged that over $1,000,000 was paid to allow people to enter the hospital. Then a reporter from the Bangkok Post came to see me. I expressed my frustrations to them. Then the next day, I was featured in a front page article in the Bangkok Post. As a result of this I was arrested and taken to jail. I had never had so much as a parking ticket before this. I was initially put into a cell with about 40 others. I still don’t mind pooping in a bucket because of this experience. I was then put in a cell with a notorious Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout (even though I know him personally, I pronounce his name as ‘bowt’ when everyone else, including him, pronounces it ‘boot’). Vicktor is known as the Merchant of Death. I spent 21 or 22 days total in the Thai prison and in that time I went from weighing 240 pounds to 182 pounds. I wouldn’t have minded the diet of rice and cucumber soup but I hate cucumbers. The US Government then arranged my release and a one-day visa for Cambodia. After travelling from Survarnabhumi to Phnom Penh, I returned to the US where the first thing I did was eat some Taco Bell. The Thai government blacklisted me from visiting Thailand but this was lifted after several years and I have returned several times since. After my Taco Bell, I didn’t stay long in the US as I had a hospital CEO placement at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong. I was in Hong Kong from 2010 to 2012. I had a car there but could only drive it to work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays due to the vehicle having red registration plates. I had to catch public transport the other days. Parking fees were more per month than my condo cost me when I lived in Dumaguete. I get a bit confused but when I lived in Hong Kong, I either had a 250 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment which cost $4,000 US per month or a 376 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment which cost $3,000 per month. During the 2012 to 2022 year period, I worked in the other places I have earlier mentioned. I also visited mainland China on and off for 6 years. In 2021, I spent 9 months in Cambodia, 2 in Phnom Penh and 7 in Siem Reap. I bought a Honda CRV when I was there which I had to get the windows tinted to the darkest tint as I kept getting targeted in a made up offence scam by the corrupt Cambodian Police. My fluent Khmer was of no use when trying to get out of paying the police fines. I only lost a few hundred bucks when I sold that Honda. I still have a car stashed away in Dumaguete which I will have to deal with upon my return to the Philippines. That will be after the college football season. I think the Crimson Tide are back and a sure thing.

Yesterday when I was providing you all with my consolidated study/work/life history on my KZread channel, someone with the username Talk About the Passion commented and asked me to provide more information about my studies and naval career. I apologise but the comment seemed to have disappeared from KZread. That seems to happen on my KZread channel sometimes. There really is not much to tell you. I did my Masters and PHD at the University of Notre Dame which was paid for by the U.S.Navy. This was done on the proviso that I serve at least four years with the Navy. Well that is what I did. I served in the area of healthcare administration. After my four years, I left the Navy honourably. I could have re-enlisted. The Navy definitely wanted me to. But because of the good name I was getting in the healthcare industry, I was able to transition straight into the private sector. I went straight into a hospital CEO role in Chicago which set me on my highly successful career in the private health care sector which wound up in September 2022 in Dubai when I retired. I was 30 when I got my hospital CEO job in Chicago. When I left the Navy I had reached the rank of Lieutenant. I really do not mind if you refer to me as Lieutenant Paul D Cardwell (Ret.). I also hope you all note that my beloved Fighting Irish gave Oregon State a thrashing in the Sun Bowl. The score was 40 to 8. If I had not been so busy at Notre Dame doing my Masters and PHD, I would have tried out for the football team.

The problem with living in these smaller provinces and islands is they are farther away from services you know you are going to need. I thought about it, but I found living on Luzon more convenient for me. I live in Batangas, which is far enough from Manila to not have to deal with gridlock but close enough to the BI, and only an hour away by bus to Manila for the airport, and the Embassy and Medical facilities if something happens to me or if I have to go back to the states. I have friends who have had flights canceled or ferries canceled from Mindanao or Dumegete or Mindoro or Palawan because of weather or natural disasters, which happens a lot out here. Not to mention brownouts, which are common in these areas. But if you can deal with those problems, more power to you. We very rarely have those happen here in Lipa City. And it is so much cheaper here. The pros far outweigh the cons. Bit like I said, to each their own.

@@MrSteven5975. Cool Big Bro Steve. I’m still working on my sweet spot moolah. If I don’t fly this year, it will be next year. I will look you up when I’m settled there. I was just wondering if I would get bored. Locals think differently from the way we do.

I am kinda close to there already, but the traffic congestion here is crazy and I want out. thx. oh I see you are a Navy Vet. Well, Im a gulf war, service connected disabled vet (US Army) and need to get to the VA from time to time too. 1 1/2 hours isnt too bad. Im going thru further C & P stuff right now, so thats good to know. Let me know asap if you can. thx again

Happy New Year 🎊 and happy holidays to everyone🎄 Trece looks like a nice area to me. Maybe a little more traffic than I might like, but you can’t have everything. If I remember correctly, you have a decent drive to the metro Manila area, a decent drive to Batangas and the ferry terminal ⛴️ …As for not being on the ocean, that’s not an issue for me, since you can fly out of Manila for cheap to Palawan and Boracay etc…

I am cracking up. The Philippines is married to America and moving away from China. Multiple U.S. military bases were just opened and China is confrontational with the Filipino navy and fishermen. BRICs has no hold on the Philippines and frankly I can't see how China and India both want to be BRICs given their disputes over water rights.

Anything in South NCR seems to be increasing. Silang isn’t bad either…I would love to be closer to Nuvali but the pricing in Santa Rosa right now makes you scratch your head. I’m not willing to put 12-20 million pesos into a property I don’t own…not going to happen.
