Having braces (or aligners) is much more common in the US than in the UK. (Have heard that comparasion being made before.) And I think it's also not that common in Germany and probably also many other countries. I think the if you're in the US and can afford to have braces (or rather: give your kids braces) you do it, even if they're not necessary for "health" reasons but purely cosmetic.

The police won't come around and pick you up. There is a law that requires every citizen of Germany to visit school for at least 10 years. If necessary the police will come to your home and force you to go to school. Because you are not a citizen and "only" an exchangestudent, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I had exchangestudents at my school which would only visit about the half of all courses. To be clear: This should not motivate you to do not go to school, but there is nobody forcing you to go to school.

I skipped roughly 1/4 of my classes after I turned 18 around 2002. That's also when the teachers stopped bothering with written notifications. Nobody really cared as long as your grades were good. But those were different times and zoomers seem to be *very* conscientious about school.

Well depends on your age. Police will most certainly show up if you're underage, subject to the compulsory school attendance (Schulpflicht) and keep missing school without proper excuse. Whether this also applies to exchange students is another story. And of course it does also depend on whether or not someone actually notified the police. This is often a last resort.

don't worry about your grades lol. i don't think anyone expects from you to be an A student with your level of german doing those tests. i would recommend keeping the questions and translate them, you you know 1. what they mean and you can practise answering them and 2. you see how much work each question needs. and the skipping school thing: well basically you are assigned to attend school which means from lets say 8am to 2pm, the school is responsible for you. if something happened and your name would come up and people would ask "where was montana"...you were in school. plus it's an insurance thing as well. if you skip school (when you're under 18) technically your parents have to call the school and say "montana is sick and won't come today" but that's something hardly anyone does. usually you text your friends and they can answer if the teacher checks attendance (also something that has to be done and also due to insurance). and when you're sick for like 2 days, your parents have to write a notice to the teacher to let them officially know. when you're 18 or older, you can write it yourself. when you are sick for more than a couple of days, you need to go to the doctor so they can give an official notice for the school. when you don't attend school and the school doesn't have any notice about where you are, the school can call the police and then they will turn up at your house to guide you to school. but for that to happen you need to be like actually missing for a number of days.

You’ll be doing fine going into international relations, you have an excellent attitude towards it and you have picked up German really quickly. Your accent is impressive, you must try and learn another language or two while you are young - possibly through exchange programs, because “full immersion” is the thing for you. Learning languages is about more than being able to communicate, it is about understanding how the other culture works. It’s not America’s strong suit and you can really broaden your mind, and help convey different perspectives to your country.

Germany doesn't prevent you from taking the Abitur. Provided you a have a valid visa you can attend school and take the exam. And since school in Germany is free, all you would need is the expense for living in Germany. But since there is a language barrier you would have to put in a lot of work. On the other hand a language barrier is melting down with every day you are in Germany and ask people to speak German. I started to think and dream in English after three months.

There has to be some Institution where you can ask stuff about your programm. I Cannot believe that its not possible for u to get high school graduation in Germany. The Institution wich is responsible for your exchange programm should be knowing things like graduating and extending your visit in germany and other similar stuff. If you are really interested in germany, and studying in general, you definitly should inform yourself about doing it here. Because studying in Germany will be ALOT cheaper than in the US. You are in q11 at a Gymnasium. Normally it takes 2 years. If you cannot graduate bcs you believe you cannot break the language barrier untill then enough, you can still take another year. So you would get your abitur in 3 years. That should be enough time to learn german in acceptable amount. Of course under the requirement that you are learning properly. Things you should do: Just visit a local library. Getting a memberchip there, its pretty cheap. If Passau is a very small City, get to a bigger one, so the selection of books is bigger. Thoose libraries mostly got some books how to learn german too. And learn german in very systematic way. Make vocabulary sheets and ask your german teacher how to get better in faster way. I am sure he will help you in that matter. Just study only for your german skills few times a week for 1-3 hours. That will improve your german alot and in maximum in 3 years you should be able to do german textbook intepretation analysis in abitur niveau.

Montana, did your mother teach you the Vietnamese language? I hope you visit VN, since it is an amazing place to visit. The VN language is difficult for us Westerners because of the tonal aspect of it, which is almost absent in English. The Vietnamese people I found very friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Deutschland ist auch interessant, aber die Preise sind dort viel höher.

What do you know about your German ancestors? Which region of Germany were they from? When did they emigrate to America? Family history is super interesting! Maybe you can even visit the city your ancestors were from and find some distant relatives!

I couldn’t even have a proper conversation with my English teacher (!) in Spain. It’s quite sad how bad the school system is when it comes to learning a second language the more you go south in Europe. Just compare Spanish or french people with Skandinavians. And it’s not even the students fault when there’s so many bad teachers.

@@julektb8717 Same, my English teacher told me she has lived in London for several years, but honestly it wasn't noticeble, she couldn't even pronounce the simplest words right and same with the students. In Madrid there actually are a lot of bilingual schools where students do at least have a level high enough to have conversations in English, but since I obviously attended a 'normal' instituto, the English was just a mess if the student didn't attend any extra courses after class.

  • @wora1111

Schwere Frage. Wann spricht man "fließend"?
