Welcome to Kerala, God's own country. I hope most of Keralites know Hindi, but not talking, but in Kerala you will learn a true culture. Kottayam medical college is one of the best. Food, no issue, if are a veg or non veg or both. May be hostal food, sorry no idea, but you can approach friends.All the best.

When keralities goes to north India, they also face a problem of food , but unlike north Indian they dont say anything about that , they try to manage , Hindi is not spoken all the states , every state have their own languages , dont think hindi will do , local people much comfortable in local language, once SRK go to north east and many of them dont no him .

For food instead of chappti very easily u can make dosa with atta. Add double the amount of water to the dough. If one cup water is used to make the dough; add one more cup is sufficient. Take 4:1 ratio atta and urad dal, soak dal in hot water for 30-40 minutes, add a teaspool full methi seeds grind them to a paste and add to the bater. Wait for half an hour. U can make this bater overnight and keep it for fermentation like the local dosa. Add salt to taste. Then apply oil on a nonstic tawa or some hot plate and pour one laddle full bater and spread. It is very easy and nutricious. To make curry here u can get almost everything that u get in the north.

If you go other countries you have to pass local language exam . Philippines official language is Tagalo . But like us each province dialect changes. But Malayalam have a lot of sanskrit word. Most of the local workers are north Indians. Kottayam the litracy town of India many people are fluent in English. There are many north Indian doctors working in Kerala. If Malayalees go to karnataka they have to learn Kannada to interact with patients. I studied in KMC and that time very few local students were there. People from outside India learned Kannada. Dakshina karnataka have three languages. Kannada, Tulu and konkani . As I was not a medical student I could manage with English . That spoken English also we learned in wks

I studied btech from punjab 2007-11.... I suffered alote.... I dont kw anything in hindi and English..... And am not able to eat evan a single food..... Everything is habit......

I dont understand why north Indians think Hindi is spoken all over India. Why would everyone speak your language? People will speak their language, practice their culture and traditions. Its common sense!

Here in Maharashtra 70 percent people Understand hindi and 30 percent can Speak it, i am Maharashtrian and i Have no enemity towards hindi language, we have a great anti hindi Leader who dosent have a single MP And only one or two MLA's, we here in Maharstra respect every regions language, many keralites too live here In Maharashtra since long , i can say They speak Marathi very fluently, nobody forced them Marathi on them Same is the case of gujrat 80 percent Gujratis understand hindi snd more Than 50 prrcent speak hindi. Here in Maharashtra gujratis speak marathi Very well. Its upto onself, how much Oneself can be integrated in a multilingual society. I had been to Kerela, people understand hindi but Dont communicate in hindi, what s The problem i dont understand, but still I appreciate their warmth and kindness Show to outsiders. Herein maharashtra Too i have s keralite staying in our colony, celebrates ganpati festival by Bringing ganesha idol at home ,he Is settled in Maharashtra from last 20 yrs and is happy snd speaks fluently Marathi, as a whole keralites settled Any where in India have integrated Socially and culturally in the state where they stay and also maintaining Ther cultural roots. About the thoughts You mentioned, dee to be of local Kerelite who hasent gone to north Indian states or may not need to go In future.

If you could learn Malayalam ... You will be able to learn and speak any language easily ... as Malayalam is a tongue twister... the toughest among Indian languages. And believe me you won't regret in KMC ... as the medical and health sectors were always kept in their crowning glory by different rulers irrespective of their political and communal interests.
