Why I changed my Yamaha Ténéré 700 to a KTM 890 Adventure R

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The different reasons why I changed from the T7 to the 890 Adv R. I did some off road courses with the T7 and road 5000 km before I made the swap. In the video I talk about the good and the bad things about the two bikes, what I like and dislike.

    Good decission! I am open for all motorcycle brands, but I am sometimes surprised how brand loyal some people are. Some would never ever consider anything like a BMW, for others everything except japanese bikes has constant problems and we don’t eveb need to talk about HD riders… Find the bike that suits YOU best! I have had my 790R now for three seasons and it’s almost up to 50.000km, mostly trouble free (one leaking for seal, same as on a Honda AT I had before, condensation in the didplay). The bike never left me stranded, it is easy to maneuver, it has long fuel range and is a lot of fun to ride. What more could I expect? Greetings from Stockholm!

    @@Boudi-xy9by T7 has gotten a ton of hype,some of it based on the fact they are either hard to get or impossible,especially in the US. And its a good bike but guys spend a ton of money on them trying to make it more like a KTM.....The top heavy part of the T7 will never go away.... And T7 needs a bigger tank so it could be more top heavy. As a street rider also,I just know I would be looking for more power on a T7. 60+ HP is going to wear a little thin. 890R needs a few mods,for what I do not a whole lot needs to be changed or modified.

    Hahaha, they won the DAKAR race 18x times, and I agree dat doesn't say everything about reliability, because you won't be in the dessert whit a whole team of mechanics. But it will tell you something about idiot-proof. And the KTM 890 Adventure-R is light, but still very tough. KTM made although a huge mistake to put the 790 ADV-R in the market (too early) because that's why the adventure market still is not trusting this machine, but KTM brought back the 790 to the drawing-board and addressed all the issues, including Euro-5 norm, and called it the 890 Adventure. The short version the KTM 790 ADV and the 890 Adventure are different, and all the design flaw, are dealt with. The T7 and the KTM 890 ADV are very often compared, but actually .... the are different maschines, and I bad with you that within 2-3 years Yamaha will correct there design-flaw in the T7 and bring a machine similar to the 890 ADV-R on the market. with low-center of gravity, more power, and a lots of electronics.

I also liked the looks of the T7 and how easy it was to make it look the way you wanted (I made a video on the mods). I agree with you that many probably was going for the 790 and was disappointed with all the issues that came with it which gave the model a bad reputation. That is no joke off road and falling down can happen way too much in tight areas on either bike........................ Im 6' tall. Almost a 34" inseam and really only 1 foot at a time touches the ground on my 890R...........I couldnt get the right suspension sag on my 890 and put a rear spring on 2 steps softer,this helped a lot,then I set it to full KTM comfort settings on shock and fork. Center of gravity is lower than the t7 ok but still a +200kg motorcycle, heavier than the t7, you're gonna struggle with it anyway. It's nonsense to begin offroading with a maxitrail, you would never learn properly. do try a 140kg crf300 just for one day and you'll see. Only fun no one second of struggling. I don't get why people get big cow bike with 1.000hp if you only need 30 to fly offroad. maxitrails are just a fashion product thing for us over 40. Rent a crf300 or similar, see the light. I give it a thump's-up, but dis was one of the worse audio .... ever. But that's just the outer shell, as we know it's about the message. And I heard 3 things. Center-off gravity, Comfort, and and Ease of use, and you still love how smooth the engine was of the T7. Issue One, and tree are almost impossible to change on bikes, because that was the design-intent of the Engineers. Comfort is a thing they always try to attack (or grade down the KTM 890 Adventure-R) because there is nothing else to attack it with, it is the new kid on the block with this low center off gravity and all the electronics to manage the power, that opens the Off-Road market to more people ... because it is so easy to ride, but is has a spike in the performance graph. That is actually why it feels different the T7 as a smooth (er) HP and Torque graph, than the KTM 890 Adv-R. Actually KTM could easaly add a Engine mode to run it as a T7, because downgrading is easy, upgrading is a different game. Actually the bikes are looking similar, but thy are totally different. And I agree with you the KTM will not bore you for the next few years, I can't say that from the T7, because despite it is a price performance killer, it is a little bit boring and has this big design flaw, high center off gravity (not easy changeable) Actualy there is only one machine out there that is more boring and that is the Kawasaki KLR 650 (all the versions) but that bike is even 30% cheaper so the Yamaha is actually in a different (fun) league, and the KTM 890, even the default version (not the R) are in a new league. And don't worry about comfort, because that was the base reason you went Off-Road ...there is no comfort there to find, it's the adventure ;-) you where shaking for.

  • @kimomoto

    @kimomoto

    Thanks for the comment buddy! Sorry about the audio. Will try to find a better solution next time. Unfortunately not many people talk about the low center of gravity, which is a huge thing when comparing these two bikes. The engine on the T7 is tall and on top of that you have the tank which makes it even more top heavy. If you are a taller person and also a more experienced off road rider it might not be a big issue. But I wanted to really point this out for those who might consider these two bikes.

    @@yunusde I love it. It works well for my use and climate. I haven’t seen any other suits with such good venting. Doesn’t vent as well as a motorcross Jersey of course.The waterproof layer for the jacked can be work outside or inside the jacket, but it’s best outside. This actually helps to keep you warmer too. It’s basically like a waterproof shell jacket but can fold into one of its pockets and then be zipped onto the front of the main jacket where the orange water proof pocket is (that orange water proof pocket can be unzipped and removed from the main jacket). But I normally just stick it in a tail back if I’m worried it might rain or be cold (I live in norway) The pants also have a waterproof liner which goes inside the pants. I think the pants even came with a thermal liner, I think. Haven’t used it though so not sure if it’s at the bottom of a driver somewhere or not. The jacket came with a thermal liner too. I love the little details, the main jacket has epic vents, the pull rip zips help if you don’t want to stop, but to get max venting you need to fully open the main chest vents… which can be done while riding but might safer to stop the bike to faff with it just like any other jacket. There are fleece lined pockets for your hands hidden behind the two big main pockets at the front of the jacket. These can be closed with a zipper to keep dust out. The external waterproof liner is a big plus in my books, plus it’s fluro orange with reflective prints on it for better visibility in bad weather. There’s an external and an internal waterproof pocket. The panda have an adjustable belt buckle in addition to a zip and button so they won’t pop open accidentally. It “feels” like a premium jacket. The main cons are the armour pads, I replaced all the armour with bigger pads, and i wish the magnet neck clasp was an a adjustable strap with a clip of some sort and it doesn’t stay closed when I have a balaclava and a neck buff on in cold weather. But that’s a really minor point. The main zipper holds it closed well enough. I feel like maybe the pants fit a bit tighter compared to the jacket. Wish my pants were a size larger. I have both in medium at 183 tall and about 86kg. But I ride with a separate Scott’s (D3O) back/chest protector. The bottom of the back protector rests down below the belt to cover my sacrum, so I need the pants to fit a little looser
