I saw a chap wearing this watch on a train and it’s true that you’d never know it’s massive money unless you know your watches. In real life that blue really wasn’t as vivid as it seems on screen and the lovely soft tonal quality of the white gold with polished centre links looked very cool. It’s beyond the reach of most watch collectors so the exclusivity must give you somewhat of a frisson. Nice watch. I don’t so much care for the new version however.

I'd say it's MORE vivid in real life... I actually didn't like it when I played with one at an AD, far TOO blue, would be nice if a darker blue. Still want it though.

Not at all. It’s not a waste. It’s sensational 🎉 I own one as well…. White gold is so gorgeous, it gives you the feel and weight of gold, but is more subtle.

The smurf has always been my secret crush, my unspoken grail. The ultimate blue watch. That blue has just something so... poetic about it... like an Yves Klein painting.

had the smurf in my hands in Feb 2020 and decided on the yacht master (Ref 126622). I liked both for the same reason, hardly anyone has them. but the YM was more attractive...$$$$... now that I've got the YM...if any AD still has the smurf I'm taking it off their hands!

The blue just pops, very eye-catching. 😍

This watch I bought at least 8 times buy in sell buy in sell. Last year I buy back and keep its unique I feel nicer than the newer smurf 👍

You should get the Yachtmaster 2 in yellow gold for your precious metal collection next 👌🏽, beautiful history Lesson and story telling, keep bringing in context this channel is great 👍🏽

I love the matte blue dial on the smurf. A lot of the yellow gold or two tone blue dial submariners seem super glossy and shiny almost. The matte blue is just much more elegant.

it's not matte on the Smurf, it's as glossy as the Bezel. The Yellow and most of the 2 tones have the "sunburst" blue dials, some earlier ones have the "Smurf" dial. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6Kuybuap9fgnqQ.html

White gold is so pretty. It's got such a nice warmth and softness. Maybe a bit sentimental because it reminds me of the wedding rings. Gold is such an amazing substance in general.

This is the most stunning Rolex dial and bezel colour IMO. I'm amazed they haven't brought it out in a steel case thus making it far more accessible... and much more popular. (Audi's new turbo blue).

I think the idea is that if Rolex brought it out in Steel, it would massively piss off all the existing Smurf owners.

Stealth wealth at its finest. Again another great acquisition for your collection. However, the polished center links are a bit much for a seeming utility watch.

The Smurf’s a fabulous addition to your superb Rolex collection and nice to see it’s been well worn as all your watches seem to be. Keep up your great down to earth content👍🙂

@@TheWatchGuysTV I’d buy a White Gold ‘Smurf’ Damien if still available at retail but bought a 2009 116613 ‘Bluesy’ last week with the Flat Blue ‘Smurf’ Dial. The Sunburst is beautiful but the combination of this dial + gold text is 🤩 A regular client of a Rolex AD returned it unworn, partially stickered in part-ex complete with Box & unsigned/undated Warranty Card. I wasn’t planning on buying a watch that day but thought ‘Where will I find another?’. It’s running well within COSC Specs gaining less than 1 second/day - amazing for an unserviced 13 year old 3135 movement👍🙂

I do love the extra heft of a white gold sub compared to the stainless model. While I appreciate the smurf I prefer the less flash blue/black model. I was also never a fan of the maxi case and feel Rolex cheaped out and cut corners with releasing that odd case. The same way they reused the small hands from the 36mm Explorer on the 39mm model when it was first released. After people complained they installed the properly proportioned hands in later models.

An entertaining video, but I'd like to make a correction for the history portion: Rolex Submariners did not have unidirectional bezels until 1979. That is because Blancpain had the patent on that innovation, and Rolex had to wait until that patent expired before they could put it on the Sub.

@4.34 Sorry to be pedantic, however the "Glide Lock" clasp on the Submariner has 10 adjustments of 2mm... The "Easy Link" clasp has the 5mm adjustment.

Finally, just purchased one. Held off like so many waiting for Rolex to introduce it in steel, but now with the new Subs introduced it probably, if it does, won’t happen for another 5-10 years. I feel the all green Hulk and the all blue Smurf are more special than the new black dial Iterations.

From all the pictures I've ogled at, the original smurf and indeed the hulk looks so much more cohesive than the kermit and new 2020 Mrs smurf. Is the blue similar to the Pelogos hue, as its looks so vibrant?

An only tangentially related question: What's your best guess as to whether the new sub format(slightly larger case diameter, shaved down lugs, slightly wider lug/link width) will soon be carried over to the GMTs? So---R.I.P. the Super Case...

A few years ago I saw the Smurf on the secondary market for as low as $20,000 US. The problem I saw was that while Rolex would not likely ever build a steel version, they could ... take the Hulk Submariner as the clear example, and it has actually happened now with the Pepsi GMT. That is the issue ... the dial itself now gets an implied value of $20,000! I thought for a while Rolex was going to position steel with the Jubilee, and Oyster bracelet with the white gold, but nope, they didn't do it. Rolex left a few white gold customers with no exclusivity bump due to Rolex' chosen development/marketing path. God help us when tha Coke GMT ever comes out.

It’s an awesome piece I’ve often tussled with the idea of purchasing one just never had the bottle to pull the trigger congratulations awesome ⌚️💙👌🏻

i have a smurf i put it on a blue everest rubber strap..I really like it now and find myself wearing it a lot more! not as heavy- don't have to worry about the bracelet getting scratched so easily! beautiful watch, but i like my blue two tone sub way more!

I got a smurf form oxfam £2 cheap got a watch from argos tells the time great by the sound of it l got a great deal

I managed to acquire a practically unworn 2010 'Smurf' a couple of years ago at a bargain price. I love the watch and wasn't considering selling it but I've been offered a part-exchange for another watch I've had my eye on, the blue dial WG Daytona 116509. Since the value of the discontinued 'Smurf' has gone up recently the deal for the 2017 Daytona seems hard to ignore! I know you own both models so I wonder if you could only keep one, which would you keep of the two?

That's a good question. I probably would keep the Smurf as I prefer it to wear and it's more of a "wow" watch. The Daytona is lovely, but it's sooooo subtle that the dial barely even looks blue. So it's quite underwhelming to wear.

Love the blue dual but nothing else!

This is the most interesting Rolex Submariner along with Hulk. But for blue diver I think Tudor Pelagos is the most beautiful watch.

Amazing watch, we also managed to get one in 2020. It was great feeling to make the plunge and get it, especially as it became discontinued.

I prefer the Kermit to the Hulk and I prefer the new version (I think people are calling it the Cookie Monster) to the Smurf. The Hulk is too green and the Smurf is just too blue for me and I feel that the black dial is needed if the bezel is so colourful.

It's a bold watch, but I struggle to justify it over the standard / classic Sub, which in my eyes is perfection. The Z Blue Milgauss on the other hand, gets me a bit 'fizzy'! What are your thoughts on the ZB Milgauss?

@thesatchguysTV I’ve been given a opportunity to press the button before Christmas on a brand new black faced current version, of the replacement for the Smurf. It’s from my local AD. I know it’s subjective to peoples visual opinion but I value your over-all opinion and thoughts, if you’d be so kind……..? Ironically the end of year sketch, now you’ve said it is probably why I’m been offered it. The list has risen dramatically by a about a 6th I reckon sine your purchase…….I’m not buying as a investment but I don’t think this is going to perform as well in the money stakes at the Yacht Master or Royal Oak tbh, like I said it’s not about that but I’d rather not loose 10k or so if possible. Heeeelllllpppp?

I’s a beautiful watch and if you have the money and are comfortable spending it, I would say it’s a great choice. I’ve only not got one because I have the original, but I would definitely have one if I didn’t . However, go in with your eyes open. - £34k is a lot of money - you would lose £5k if you needed to sell it - they are selling at 3rd party retail for the same as list - so no premium - we are in tough economic times So it all depends how big your spare reserves are and how important £34k in cash is to your family. The white golds are very much a super luxury item that looks just like steel but costs 3x. If you have the money then you’ll love it, and it will also increase your stature within the AD, so use it as a stepping stone to getting a Daytona, which will be worth more than RRP and will act as a hedge against any losses on the Smurf.

What box is that!? I need a new 8/10 watch box

It’s a chocolate tea pot a ash try for a motorcycle. A product that will never be used for its purpose. I have a Black bay blue though and I will be buggered if I’m taking it in the ocean. And I do go diving!
