Why I Bought a 2013 iMac in 2019

I have this model. I agree. Bought it when it first came out. I'm a profession TV editor and cut on Avid Media Composer. I usually work in production houses, and only edited here and there with it. Small stuff. However, with the pandemic, all the facilities are closed and I am working remotely at home. Currently cutting a reality show, and so far so good. It's humming right along. I also do some Adobe After Effects with it. But you definitely have to boost the RAM! I put in 32. Thanks for the video.

Running a late 2013 27" myself, though I use an external Samsung T5 as boot and scratch drive until such time as I can get round to fitting a NVME internal drive. Makes quite a difference compared to the internal mechanical drive.

Dude trust me on this... Upgrade hard drive to SSD. I recently did this to my aging 2013 21inch base model iMac and it made it a LOT faster. Video editing was surprisingly good on Final Cut Pro and boot times are incredible. Definitely would buy older iMac for this reason alone. A 1TB Sandisk SSD was only $130 and the DIY replacement process was not too difficult at all.

Dude nowadays people tend to go to perfect displays but 5k is not that highly required to perform at best I mean even if you want to deal with an 8k footage and ur machine is a low one such yours you can go ahead and use proxies in premiere, or lower the ratio in after effects then render the sequence, however waiting for it will be exhausting but its okay for many people as long as you don't encounter lagging when editing. I hope my idea is clear. 😊

Just purchased for $510: late 2013 iMac 27” 3.5ghz, , 1tb hdd, 16gb ram, and (MOST importantly) the GTX 780m 4gb gpu - this gpu scored higher Unigine Heaven benchmarks than all MacBooks up to the 2019 15” (560x), and surprisingly even beat out the 2015 5k 27” iMac (m395x). For another ~$150, upgraded to 32gb ram and 1tb NVMe ssd, while holding the 1tb hdd as a secondary internal drive. Cannot stress how much of a difference the gpu with 4gb ram makes. 4K video editing and Fortnite run BUTTERY 🧈 smooth! Altogether, for under ~$650!

It was originally listed at $800 and I haggled, while providing a couple youtube videos done by Luke Miani and Eevnos -- I explained how both youtubers had purchased the same used iMacs for $600 or less. You should also mention that Eevnos' video is a couple years old now, so your buy price should be lower. Just remember, the mechanical HDD is outdated and replacing it with any type of SSD (even SATA) will make a noticeable difference. Goodluck Ted

And you could also use an external ssd drive for your boot drive if you want speed using the thunderbolt connection if you don’t want to open the screen to install an ssd drive, although I would still do so personally. The truth is the older machines are really powerful as in fast once you have an ssd drive installed because ssd drives have their own cpu processors onboard. My question is, is the graphic card metal API. Because if so then the machine is a win win I my opinion.

I'm sure with a decent amount of RAM and an SSD, this machine would be able to handle a basic 4K timeline. It would really depend on your bitrate and video codec. The SSD upgrade would be extremely important as the mechanical hard drives that come in these machines are way to slow to handle it. In my personal opinion, if you plan on editing a lot of 4k video, you would be best off looking at something a bit newer with a better graphics card. Especially if you plan on editing longer timelines, adding effects, or doing color correction.

Does an SSD makes a difference if you never cut your iMac off? And does it make sense to go with an older iMac over a new one if you’re only going to do basic stuff like web browsing, watching movies, emails, social media,KZread, writing, listening to music, light photo editing, and very light gaming? I have an iPad already but I wouldn’t mind a bigger screen. And the ability to do light gaming on steam.

An SSD will make a big difference in all day to day operations. Not sure quite what you mean about but cutting your iMac off, maybe you could clarify a bit for me. To answer your main question, yes an older iMac make sense for everything you mentioned there with the exception of gaming. Even some basic steam games can struggle on some of these older iMacs. If some light steam games are important to you, I would look for something that’s more on the recent side with dedicated graphics.

My suggestion would be to get one that is from 2015 or newer. Also make sure you have at least 8 gigs of RAM and an SSD if possible. You will want to stay away from the ones that have traditional hard drives, they are borderline unusable. Upgrades on iMacs aren’t very easy, so you will want to get one that’s already ready to go. Hopefully that helps a little, if you have any more questions let me know! :)
