Ойын-сауық
I've only owned my Ford Ranger Wildtrak for 7 weeks but it's got to go!
I feel like a car dealer at the moment switching and changing but I'm hoping it's going to be worth it.

I had a 2018 V6 Amarok, 150000 problem free kilometres, towed a 2.5ton excavator frequently while carrying 900kg on the tray, had it tuned 240kw and over 700nm, one of the best cars of ever owned
I'm in Australia, and have now had a Ranger Platinum since Jan 2024. It has everthing on it I could want, and then some, and has no problem pulling my 3t caravan. I have already done over 20000km and no issues at all. The 3l V6 is great, with plenty of torque for towing. For me, better value for money than the raptor, and far better than the competition. Very happy with my ranger.
On my third 2.0 LT ranger. The only time I take the trailer off which is always sitting a 3000KG is for the MOT. Do about 120000 miles a year. I HAVE never had a problem with any of them. I had a Hilux before that . Gearbox blew up at 75000 miles.

Just bs, you probably work at a Ford dealer, tons of you people around here
I think you might benefit from another test drive of the Grenadier. You love your old Defenders and the Grenadier provides that feeling but with more power and comfort. 10,000 miles in mine. No leaks, no rattles, no breakdowns and as much power from an extremely under stressed engine as you could wish for.
Perhaps you should look at a VW Amarok V6 3lt, I had a 2lt Discovery for 4 years on a 17 plate. The only problem I had was a leaking wind screen which was annoying I sold it at the start of Covid. I’ve just got a 21 plate Discovery (new model) 3lt which is silky smooth once you’ve had a Discovery all other cars seem second best. I managed to get 3 year warranty which a paid for 1 year and got 2 years of the dealer which is a must with any Land Rover. Ps for 3 years I’ve driven a Mercedes Vito 2lt with the new 2lt engine it’s really fast for a van and you can get a Vito Sport with windows and a second row of seats. The V class I feel it’s a over priced van, good look with your new car search.
Question for you, since you live in a land of tiny roads and a 4 cylinder bi turbo 2.0 making 213hp and 500nm is too small for you which vehicle would you buy considering the Ford engine the class leader makes more than the rest of the makes and is only unreliable according to those who have never owned one? The F150, Ram1500, Silverado all do not fit in the narrow roads where you live.
Look at a 2018-2020 Amarok v6. Not the later ford ranger based one. 2018/2020 is a vw engine and chassis. Look for ergocomfort seats. All power outputs are the same engine with different maps so all map to 300-320bhp mated to an 8 speed ZF box. Comfy, fast, really torquey. Could tow a train.
Picked up a 2021 110 D300 X-Dynamic HSE Defender two months ago, done 3k miles so far, it does everything effortlessly, definitely one of the best choices of engine for the platform, and it's surprised me with how economic it is on a long run, regularly getting 37-40 mpg, dont have any of the ladders/ boxes/ roof rack (fluff) on it, which definitely helps. Towing = no dramas what so ever.
New model Ranger/Amarok has, I believe, the Ford V6 3litre diesel with snapping cranks….previous Amarok had VW V6, fantastic Truck.

If the previous Amarok was fantastic, Why did it become a ford clone, shouldnt it have been the other way around 🤡
My 2019 U.S. spec Ranger Lariat has been an excellent vehicle with no issues.4th new Ranger since 1988 - nothing but superlatives.
I have driven lots of different pick ups at work and we tow 3.5 tonne daily. We have a 71 plate D-max and that only has a 1.9 litre engine, that is terrible and struggles even towing 2 tonne. My personal preference is a Ranger 2.2 limited but I haven’t tried a bi turbo 2.0. I think this is a big issue tho as regulations constantly get tightened we are seeing low displacement vehicles with high BHP which is no good for towing or longevity.
I'm from Australia, and I own a 2.0 Bi-turbo Ranger XLT that regularly tows a 3-ton van. It handles the towing very well, with plenty of torque for the job. The 10-speed automatic transmission performs excellently when towing, though it can be a bit hesitant at low speeds when driving around town without a load. It's a great Ute, and I haven't had any issues with it, although a friend had to replace the engine in his. The Ranger and the Amarok are the most refined and advanced Utes on the market. However, the V6 diesel is from the same crankshaft-snapping engine family developed by Ford and PSA, found in previous Land Rover Discovery models (3, 4, and 5) and other JLR products. You could opt for a less refined Ute, like a DMAX, BT50, or Hilux, but they have their own set of potential problems or short comings as well. If you are looking for refinement, it's hard not to buy a Ranger or Amarok.
Once you tow something in the two ton range, particularly here in the US, you really need a larger fuel tank. The F150s come with 36 gallon tanks standard.

the UK is tiny though, I doubt that's ever a consideration.
Not sure what all is available there. I generally think the smaller 4 door pickups for dependability and efficiency, you can’t go wrong with Toyota or Nissan. One of those is what I would go with.
Would you consider the new shape Toyota Land Cruiser with its new retro styling? That’s probably what id go for if I was in your position. That 2.8 engine is fairly bomb proof. I’m saying this as a classic defender 90 owner btw so definitely not a LR hater 😂
Have you looked at the Grenadier quartermaster ?
From the left field, have you thought of a Subaru Outback. Great 2.5 Petrol engine that pulls really well. This is a very reliable car and very comfortable. As there are very few sold, it keeps it value.

Agree there iv had a few l322s and currently have a 4.2 v8 Supercharged petrol and it’s great to drive, if towing heavy is look at the 4.4v8 diesel. As said if looked after they are reliable and easy to repair and will out perform any pick up in nearly every category, speed, towing, comfort, safety etc.
What about the Mercedes x350- I know they’re based on a navara but at least it’s got a proper engine. I haven’t driven one but like the look of them and would be what I’d try I think.
You will hate me for saying this but we’ve had a lot of rangers for work and we’ve had Nissan teckna we now have the new defenders 3 litre a 110 and a 90 they blow any pickup on the market into the wind , we tow trailers a fair bit when moving our forest machines from forest to forest , the land rovers are fantastic and they are more comfortable and just do the job better , hope you get sorted soon bud 👍
In Oz the last VW series Amarok Walkingshaw 580 very coveted - not sure if sold in UK but if want newer latest v6 Ranger/Amarok would be choice but if don’t need rear tray the v6 Ford Everest would be a good choice I think 👍
Have a 2litre Everets and drive it hard, tow 2.5 tonnes without problem. Also have a 3.2litre Ranger and not as good all round. Love the 2litr. Just drive it hard and it will be fine.
Had a van recovered on a 3.2 Ranger , chap said a 3.2 is more economical that the 2 lt when towing .......in his case a trailer and vehicle so pretty big load .
I have a 2018 V6 Amarok and it has plenty of power and is a very fast truck.
Defo VW Amarok 2018-2020 3.0V6 with the 258 tune had one regret selling 😢

Change the oil at half Ford interval and get the Belt done at 70k and they are fine.
Agree totally about engine size. Would love an Isuzu D Max but a 1.9 engine puts me off especially when the rest of the world has the 3.0 ltr diesel.
Ive had two 2ltr bi turbos and never had any problems but my expectations were that they weren't going to be anything special in terms of towing heavy loads or sprinting up hills and overtaking anything faster than a semi. I did have horses at the time and have towed two successfully but wouldn't do it often. One horse was fine. I dont have horses now so the 2ltr bi turbos have gone and i now have a '23 Raptor - i couldn't be happier.

@reneejansen3983

@thedoctorsgarage NLRB it's a 3litre twin turbo charged v6 petrol engine with a 10 speed auto transmission. Its a far cry from the bi-turbo's. It doesn't have the towing capacity of the Wildtraks but I purchased it knowing that. Its fuel consumption is higher of course but I chose to live with that in return for a fun car that also rides supremely well on the freeway. Since I no longer have horses due to a spinal injury I now am learning to 4wd and I go out camping often with friends. The car is ideal for all that.

@thedoctorsgarage yes. There is a huge difference. After driving the V6 I used to comment that the bi-turbo was like driving a tractor. I have had my Raptor for nearly a year now and am thrilled with it. If you can deal with higher fuel costs (I average 12.1/100kms and I'm a leadfoot - most say 11.5), and a maximum towing capacity of 2500kgs it's the best car I've ever, in my 72 years on this earth, ever owned.
have a look at the new Ford Ranger with the V6 best selling vehicle in Australia and New Zealand 2023
So the issue was towing? I've just bought a 71 plate Ford Ranger Bi turbo but don't anticipate doing a lot of towing.

What's an Amerock?🤔 BTW, we have a 2016 explorer sport with a 3.5 turbo, with 175,000 miles on it, had to replace a cam position sensor, was able to fix it myself, cost $30, this 3.5 is awesome, it's fun holeshoting BMWs and Chargers!
I had a new amorok in 2019 only just got rid of it what a fantastic truck v6 loads of power regular get 32to 33 to the gallon would definitely have another if I could know got to stick with my td5 ninty but this old girl does what I need know I am retired
Old shape Defender Td5 130 hcpu. Should hold its money, good content and you could always get Mahker to drop an M57 BMW into it or dpuk to fit the OM 606 Mercedes engine. I work on old Defenders, I've worked on one new Defender, plastic, plastic, plastic and there's so many on the road that I can't see the price holding up. My local Ineos dealer in Chester is knocking 9k off new Grenadiers! At least they're more of a truck than the new Defender.
If you want serious power, the only real option is the previous model Amarok V6 then get it to Darkside Developments for a remap and sone upgrades, you’ll have a seriously powerful truck that leaves most cars standing.
Ranger next gen V6 diesel is a lot smoother and more comfortable driving and 2.0 litre diesel one is noisy and works harder! We have both versions at work! I have the 2.0 litres bi turbo and I have put 75,000 kms on it in 12 months with no problems, just a couple of recalls for little things. Run it hard and drive it like I stole it. My supervisor has V6 and has ordered an Everest Wildtrak for himself with the v6. My last Ute was the 3.2 5 cylinder and I liked it a lot, it’s still in the company and has 300,000 kms on it now and nothing has gone wrong with it. I’m not a big ford fan but the company has a lot of them and no problems with the 2.0 litre version.
Have a look at the new Navara or Isuzu..
Definitely a previous gen Amarok V6. Get one with the ergo comfort seats and throw on a tune and you’ll have one very quick, comfortable and refined vehicle that will tow with absolute ease.
Mercedes’ 350 pick up , looks the business, nice for family and has a tow bar.
If you want a mix of refinement, grunt and knowing it'll last long, get a D-max or look at the new Triton Ranger V6 is good too, its a proven platform being used in the F150 for years and is decently solid Edit: You could also go 3.2 Ranger, the money you save from buying you can have a nice tune put on and it'll be a beast those 5 cylinders respond very well to a remap

Hi Doc, I was interested in a pickup as a lifestyle vehicle, I don’t really need the flat bed but it would be used in recreational use. What puts me off is the commercial restrictions on road ie. Lower speed limits for commercial vehicles. Does that not bother you? I’m pretty sure I would creep up to 70 mph on a dual carriageway when the law says it should be 60. Would that bother you?

Most double cabs are low speed limits. As to whether it bothers, it depends where you drive. Where I live NSL dual carriage ways are not really a regular drive and getting up to 60 is rare through traffic. I don’t feel frustrated on lower limits in my hilux. IIRC 2.2 tonnes unladen is the cut off for limits. All the dual purpose stuff goes out the window if that threshold is passed.
What about a Ranger Raptor? Much more comfortable and has loads of toys as standard?

Looked at one, but couldn’t live with the steering! The steering is pretty poor to be honest, it has a proper steering box rather than rack and pinion which is more robust off road for sure, but the cost is the feel which could be better. The much talked about lack of self-centring is definitely there, you would adapt to it pretty quickly and it would cease to be a big issue but it seems a silly fault to let slip through the net given all the good engineering that’s gone into the car

Your getting through vehicles like hot dinners at the moment 😅 Ive had a 2.2 2013 ranger from new, now 120k miles towing large loads. The horsepower isnt great but torque is good. Havnt had any major issues, just yearly service and replacement parts. Maybe a bit much but the new 2024 ranger is getting good reviews for driving more like a suv and looks good too. The EU and UK emissions regulations and LEV policy is forcing manufacturers to simply stop offering certain powertrains (engines) regardless of whether said smaller ones are up to the job or not. So I think you'll find that to be the case. Hunting out the powertrain you need for specific tasks will be increasingly difficult, same applies new and used as both markets will see the squeeze given new feeds used.

The 2.0 is a great motor.
If you stay in Pickup territory: Fords 3 liter diesel is very nice and efficient. Its the Engine that is used in Landrovers and Jags all over the place, and VW uses it too in the new Amarok, so most of the problems are buffed out. The crankshaft is very short, (thats why its efficient) and has a spot in it that breaks pretty fast, if it is not 100 % forged and hardened. But this happens quickly, (before 50 k miles) , and if you actually use the motor, and it is a "bad" apple, within warranty time. Once it has proven itself worthy, it will last forever if you have decent oil managment. If its a production failure, you most probably get a new motor within warranty. I have had so many engines that were "nightmares" according to many techs and internet sources, never had a problem with them, i imaginge most of those guys are really hard on their stuff and dont look after Oil and stuff like that. If you dont go retard mode, it will be fine. and yeah small biturbo engines are not really meant for towing. Outside of Pickups, there are some BMW X, Alfa Stelvio, Mercedes4matic, Subarus, Volvos, VW Tuaregs that are very good at towing. But those are costly compared to pickup trucks.
There is no substitute for cubic capacity when it comes to towing.
All pickups are flawed only make sense through a business. Japanese will have the reliability but not the quality feel, a discovery or a range rover will do what you want I'm afraid, so get back in a jlr product. Just make sure you have that warranty!!
Isuzu 3 liter or Hilux 2.8 liter. If you can go new Land Cruiser 2.8 l

In fact it was worse than before i took it there!! They then said i needed to re book it in & a new rear loom & a camera was needed to fix? After 3 weeks at the ford garage i got the truck back once again. All ok but after another 3weeks of generally light use the fault came back as before!! I then had an mot done by a local small independant garage & by the grace of god it passed with no abs light on!!! But shortly after the fault again reappeared. So in it went again to the small private garage & the fault was found to be a badly repaired loom connection & a front wheel sensor which showed on their diagnostics! Finally fixed!but why couldnt the ford main dealer do that?? ford dealership info on request? Thanks for reading.
