If your looking at the new Elgato Stream Deck + as a way to control system audio and use the Elgato Wave Link software, STOP. Watch this first, as there are cheaper ways to do this that you should know before making that purchase decision.
If you want to control your audio editor or video editor, STOP. We can do that too.
What about OBS, yep, You bet we can control that too.
I am just showing you one of MANY devices that can do this for a fraction of the cost, and the software you need to do it.
Software List:
Midikey2Key: midikey2key.de/
OSIMidi: www.osimidi.com/
Midi Mixer: www.midi-mixer.com/

I think you missed the versatility that comes with the stream deck+ and you dont need to have their other hardware to fully enjoy this, it's actually the opposite. Wave link is an amazing software which used to be only accessible with one of their microphones or the elgato xlr thing. Now with the stream deck+ you have access to it without a microphone. The product is amazing for it's ease of use and customizability. I'd rather have one device that does all of these things pretty well (and will get better over time as 3rd parties start doing their thing) rather than have something that does one thing amazing and other things not at all. Average person is gonna get this to save the time and pain going through all the things you listed.

So if I get a Stream Deck Plus, and plop it on top of a Motu M2 you're saying that I would gain most of the things that interface just doesn't have?

I cannot get Wave Link set up on my M1 Macbook. I cannot set it as an output, and I am not liking this right now. I got two weeks to figure it out before I take it back!

I appreciate where you are coming from, and for a content creator on a budget just starting out, or doesn't see the extra price as worth it, 100% all the way. When I started streaming I was using a Akai mini midi board, it was cheap worked great. That said there are major advantages to buying into the eco-system, first of there is not as much to to go wrong. The more programs and plug-ins (as every time OBS updates inevitably it breaks one or more plugins) you have running, the more you have to trace which program/plug-in is causing the issue. Which brings me perfectly to my second point in that buying into an eco-system means you do not have as many apps/plugins running, and what apps you do have are designed to work together. Then there is the ease of use, many content creators (at least on twitch) don't have a tech background and want something that is plug and play, which is probably the biggest plus to Elgato.

Thanks for the info. I definitely learned something new. the thing with Elgato's stuff, is the convenience of the the software. I tried to go the cheaper route on many items, only to end up paying more for the Elgato''s ecosystem. they are obviously doing something right if other companies cannot compete even with lower prices and better product side. Software side costs money to build and maintain. I genuinely love and appreciate how I can get new features with an update that were not available when I first got the product. It is something I cannot say about many exclusive software companies that normally either drop support with age or purposefully cripple the software to force consumers to buy new products. Despite all of that, $200 is still a steep price especially for someone who already has older stream deck and perhaps goxlr or wave mic/wavexlr. maybe when they get more buttons, I will make the switch.

I think if you bought the stream deck plus you would understand it’s not just 8 buttons and 4 knobs, you can swipe left and right on the touchscreen for more and more pages. Plus the steam deck has so many plugins and can control just about everything, not just Elgato stuff. This being with the stream deck plus the only Elgato hardware in a given setup.

If you have a XL and a Streamdeck + they can complete each other and work together (and switch together on the software you use). You can’t do that with another device (Loupedeck can switch on the software you use).

I’ve bought the SD+, I disagree with the ecosystem bit, my setup is as varied as it gets, or I might misunderstood what you’ve said. I like my stream deck but it has less content than the xl or regular version, plugins, etc.

the possibilities are endless with this littel Gem. From what i can see from their website and SideShowFX the way this product controls Davinci Resolve especially the Color page is unprecedented and definitely a game changer for a lot of colorist with low budget , the better alternative is the Blackmagic control surface which are waaay too expensive , i won XL version and this one is definitely under my radar, i wish if it could have more buttons , may be the next XL Plus version 😍

i've been using a akai midi mix for switching and audio mixing while live for 4 years now and i'm going to buy the new stream deck plus today. it's just so clean, the price hurts but i'm worth it lol

Nothing wrong with it. I just love my setup and wanted to share the knowledge of the alternatives. My desk has a lot of gear and the Nano Kontrol 2 fits better, and also is used in my video and audio workflows, as well as live music control with my mixer. Does more for me :)

What I gather from this video is that you have cheaper and possibly better options to do the same thing that the elgato stream deck + can do but it also looks like all of your devices are in their own realm so to speak. You have a elgato stream deck then you have a separate device to control audio then you have separate devices to control lights such and so forth when the elgato stream deck+ does a lot of those same options all in one unit instead of buying multiple.

Yes to some extent, as clearly stated. The purpose is: A.) Get the most value for the dollar, so either being able to buy much cheaper equipment that is actually better than the Elgato version. Example the Iris 4K webcam is over $100 cheaper than the FaceCam Pro but has the same sensor and image quality, with extra features like microphones and HDMI output. B.) Not downgrade equipment to be in the ecosystem, like the microphone I use being better than the elgato offering. C.) Have more flexability outside the ecosystem, such as the lights having battery power, and an app I can easily use them in the studio (who does not have a phone) but also outside the studio. D.) A midi controller will easily let you control app and microphone volume same as Wave Link, there is no difference there. So for now I only see the lights really being the new intergration, and who keeps changing lights live during a recording? E.) A midi controller can give you more buttons, sliders and controls than the new Stream Deck and are directly integrated into most professional programs, or easily used as hotkeys for those without. The main thing about what you said, separate device. The new Stream Deck is a separate device as well, no way would I toss the XL into the garbage and use just the new smaller one to control everything, so I would have the SD+ and SD XL both on my desk, so why not use a small midi controller to do the same thing, and still have access to everything the Stream Deck ecosystem has. Best of both worlds!

elgato wave software allows you to have different volume controls for self output and audience output, can you do that with any other software like midimixer?

  • @ViciousXUSMC

    @ViciousXUSMC

    Жыл бұрын

MidiMixer will let you control any application or device so yes. You may want 2 devices one for your monitoring and one for your stream. That can be done with free software like Virtual Audio Cable, or Voice Meter, or in my case via hardware with my mixer.

But stream deck plus would allow to control video editing software with the knobs for example...would that be possible with the midi based solution?

  • @ViciousXUSMC

Yes absolutely, that was mentioned. Most video editing software has built midi control. If it does not, you can easily use hotkeys instead to run anything.

I'm not an audio guy, not a music guy. I listen to anything that's popular at the moment. One thing I really hate is the technical side of audio, because it never makes since. No you can't just buy a sure sn7b, you have to buy a cloudlifter because the mic isn't strong enough, so on and so forth. All these gotchyas. I tried routing audio on windows for streaming and it's a complete headache. recording your own computer audio, complete headache. VoiceMeeter Banana, headache. There's too much to remember, nothing is labelled, you have to have a memory map of how it's all set up, if you don't use it all the time you forget everything. I would pay a lot just for the convenience of avoiding all of that. The deck+ is significant because it allows you to effortlessly have two audio outputs sources for streaming and you can easily control both the monitor audio and the stream audio independently and the best thing about it, it's all labelled, you know what the audio is because there is a name on the screen. It's heavenly

Depends on your pre-amp the X18 can run the SM7B without a CloudLifter, it's a pro audio piece and made to pair with other pro audio. Most pro-sumer equipment just is not good enough to pair directly with it. Everything you just said and more is what I do with my digital mixer, even more so. I have pre-sets for streaming, playing music, and voice over. Each pre-set changes the aux busses, what comes over the monitors, and what goes out the main mix to record. The new SD+ is not adding anything that is not already in Windows, and can be controlled with a Midi Controller. But that is why a channel like mine exists to show how to do those things for those that want to learn, or at least know there options. It's absolutely fine to make the personal choice to go all in with one product line if you want, I personally would just feel limited. These are not features add's when I look at the big picture, these are feature limitations when I know how to do everything and more outside of a specific product or ecosystem. I could do an entire video why I sold my Ubiquiti networking equipment for the same reason, and now with my custom setup I have nearly 10x the performance for the same cost, and lots more flexibility and capability. Giving up something like a PFSense Firewall just to use the Ubiquiti gatway to get all the features from their switches and access points was a major loss in functionality, and once you are in their ecosystem you have to pay nearly 4x=7x more for things like a switch vs another brand offering the same hardware at a lower cost.

You can control third parties equipment with stream deck. Ie Philips Hue lights. And a midi controller can only control midi devices. Stream deck can control all devices and it can be your unique control device. You don’t need to use Elgato mics. I use Rodecaster Pro 2 and Lewitt mics.

I've become more sold on the Elgato plus simply due to all the third party hardware and software needed to run the same functions. Not to mention not much of it being very friendly with each other. Sure i could probably GET more with third party but the ease of use seems to be the definite choice it's almost like Apple. Yes its overpriced and you're locked in an ecosystem, but that ecosystem works and plays together very nicely.
