Why Hogan Always Tucked His Arm In - He Considered It a Must Have for Great Golf

Спорт

Always use your right arm like this in the golf swing. The right arm plays a huge role in the golf swing. It sets the golf club on the proper backswing and downswing path. It makes all the important positions happen without thinking. Instead of playing positions, golfers who use the right arm correctly need to only focus on turning their shoulders. The rest of the swing will take care of itself.
There's a reason why the right arm has helped millions of golfers improve their ball striking. There's a reason why Ben Hogan, the best golf ball striker of all time used his right arm like this. This golf tip works wonders. Instead of overthinking the swing, use Ben Hogan's right arm secrets. You'll love the why the strike feels with the golf ball.

    With your stack and tilt, quiet hands and glue the arms to the body lessons I dropped from a score of 105 at the beginning of the season to 85 today. And you made the swing so easy and repeatable, not to mention the increase in distance with all clubs. I have never had success like this before from any other lessons. Thank you Tom. I really appreciate what you have done for my game. As you say, "golf should be fun" and you made it really fun for me! Not to mention the bragging rites that I now have.

    I have three Saguto-ims I do at setup and maintain thru the swing. Weight forward, left arm straight, right elbow tucked. Getting more comfortable with them. Short 80 in a recent round. Would have broke 80, but on 18 hit in trees on right, punched out across fairway to trees on left, punched out to fairway, pitch to green, two putt for disappointing double bogey (and a happy 80). I know I am on the right path to "the best golf of my life"!

I'm very glad to know that this concept is performing well for you, too! Thanks for sharing your success with it and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom PS: Since you made reference to your age in your other comment on the grip, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. If you've not already done so, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? So I did what everyone neglects doing (film themselves swinging lol) and I noticed my right elbow ungluing on the downswing! Backswing it was there but as I initiated down it just sailed away and I couldn’t sail away with it! This video gave me the perfect cues and drills to stay Krispy!

    LOL! I appreciate that! Mr. Hogan delivered - and continues to deliver posthumously - phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about Hogan’s swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied teachings - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I’m doing my best to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. I don't think there is a much better tip than this one, or a better online training course than Tom's. Since I have tucked my trail elbow in, staying attached, I'm hitting the ball straight and further than I have in my life. I am also making sure I have the proper grip, which I learned in Tom's online training course, keeping the crease and V's in the grip. In Tom's course I made changes to correct my grip that made everything else so much easier than it ever has. The new grip did feel foreign, but not long at all. All I had to do was start hitting balls with it and honestly, it feels like a luxury grip. Ball striking feels better than ever. I also learned how to time my swings, for example my irons swing time is saying 1000 and 1 in my mind. The Driver, I swing slow enough to give my swing time to happen. If I swing to hard, nothing has time to happen, except going to the desert. I look like I'm from the desert, I had been there so long. Everybody learns at a different pace. It took me some time before Tom's online course changed my golfing life for life in a direction I just couldn't get there on my own , watching video after video of different pros, not until I went through the course. I'm starting over and going through it again. I love golf again and Tom's course was my last go at it. I told my wife, if this didn't work, I'll have to quit. I was very frustrated then. LOL

    I may sound like I'm teaching in my posts. I may be doing that indeed. Everything that I talk about which I limit what I will say about, I learned by watching Saguto videos and applying them, just like the rest of the others that leave awesome posts that I learn from to. For me this is a team effort. We don't know each other , but we all have the same goal. Crispy ball striking consistently. Everything that I tried new in Saguto training felt weird, odd and not really comfortable with it. Over the years, I have learned in golf if something feels that way, it has to be good. The thing for me that stands out as the biggest wonderful odd thing is the grip. It took some time even after I was told the proper way to grip the club. Once my grip was finally corrected, my ball striking shocked me and I it was with what I call a lazy swing. Best wishes to everyone that is trying to hit those crispy shots that really do make life much better. @@SagutoGolf

    Tucking that right elbow has been the biggest change in my swing over the last few years, love the constant contact I get since doing that. I tend to come over the top and hit a big push hook when I get too "arms" and untuck that elbow. It shocks me everytime when I keep that elbow tucked how perfect of a shot it is. Once I tilted, my right arm stayed tucked and connected with the ball very easily. One of the best tips ever ... and your videos on it have been epic, huge hits *** However, I'd advise people not to get too obsessed with completely sticking it to the body I mean, especially on the longer clubs it peels off a bit, right? But, in general, "keep it sticky" ... that's my swing thought. Keep that right elbow sticky. Not stuck, but sticky. Know what I mean?

  • @SagutoGolf

    @SagutoGolf

    9 ай бұрын

    I appreciate that, Justin. It is certainly acceptable to have a few inches of space between the trail elbow and the torso at the top, just like I have in my swing. The key is that the arm has not lost its "tucked" orientation. It is externally rotated and the elbow is definitely not flying away, meaning that it is in perfect position to reconnect in the downswing. "Gluing" it in there is a "feel" that is necessary for most amateurs to achieve this desired action. Tom

My lessons on this "trail arm magic" have helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a myriad of issues and experience great ball striking. As such, I’ am confident this concept will perform well for you too! Yes - This swing key also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oWSs1cWGqbGZpps.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Sorry too disappoint, but my own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me. 😎 Beyond that, they do change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. (Although as long as my setup is good and I've pre-established the necessary connections, I can trust that no matter my "trigger du jour", it's going to get me moving properly into the takeaway and backswing.) This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Tom

  • @SagutoGolf

    I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Mike! I simply "allow" the wrists to work as they should without forcing anything. If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Tom

    Hi Dan, Yes - this swing key applies through the bag. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oWSs1cWGqbGZpps.html It's not uncommon to experience great results initially with the shorter irons, but give it appropriate time and you will get that same level of ball striking bliss with the longer clubs that you got with the 7 iron. I have been following your channel and a member of your school for over a year now. I have improved some, but still have some inconsistency. I was fitted for irons over 3 years ago with probably a bad swing so could some of my inconsistency be from those clubs being fitted for my old swing? I’m 5’5” and irons were -1/2” and 2 degrees upright. Thanks.

  • @SagutoGolf

    @SagutoGolf

    Professional clubfitters are going to dial your equipment in to precisely match the swing you bring to them on the day of your fitting. So, if for example on that particular day you were steep and across the line - and your objective from the session was to achieve a better ball flight and tighter dispersion pattern - then your fitting specs were designed to accommodate that exact swing. If you have since corrected your path, then a 2-degree upright lie angle - which is significant - may be causing you some issues with your ball flight. As such, I would definitely suggest going for another fitting. Tom

    Hi Anish, This should not create stress or discomfort, but it can certainly feel restricted initially if your trail arm did not previously have this level of connectivity, and the external rotation of the arm may feel different as well. It is certainly acceptable to have a few inches of space between the trail elbow and the torso at the top, just like I have in my swing. The key is that the arm has not lost its "tucked" orientation and the elbow is definitely not flying away, meaning that it is in perfect position to reconnect in the downswing. "Gluing" it in there is a "feel" that is necessary for most amateurs to achieve this desired action. Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Tom

    LOL! Sorry to burst your bubble, but a shank doesn't sound like that! That is what is known as a "push-draw". It starts right (for a right-handed player) and curves back to the target. It's not necessarily something we should have to "try" to do, but yes - the trail arm does not full straighten until just past impact. The answer lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there we can then do some reverse engineering to identify and neutralize the cause of a sideways shot. For example, it could be that your path has shallowed too much or that your swing still has some leftover remnants of subconscious compensatory moves that you made to neutralize a previously steeper path. Video and/or a launch monitor that provides path and face angle data will be very helpful in diagnosing the culprit. While there are certainly videos on my channel that may help, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks - I'm glad to know that you are enjoying my content!! Tom: I don't see your right arm actually "glued" to your chest at the top of your backswing. There's a gap there that's quite noticeable. Also, you are blessed with enough flexibility to achieve a very wide swing while still keeping your left arm absolutely straight, that most people, especially seniors, can't achieve. Many of us will have to detach that right elbow from the chest to lengthen the backswing enough to get decent distance without forcing the swing which leads to other problems. I'm thinking that right arm tucked is more important in the downswing to shallow the club. What do you think?

    Yes - to some extent it is, Ken. Although typically we are taught to put that sock - or tee, glove, towel, etc. - up in the armpit area, and this does not do enough to ingrain the level of connection needed. Instead, place that sock a few inches down the upper arm - about halfway between the shoulder and elbow - and then press it against the side of the ribcage. My lesson series on this "trail arm magic" has helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a myriad of issues and experience great ball striking. I'm very glad to know that this concept is performing well for you, too. Nice job figuring it out!! I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. I'm glad to know that this lesson performed well for you! Your lead arm connection point is in the armpit area and no lower than that as we want that arm to travel 45 degrees across the upper chest during the backswing. Beyond that, a proper setup will free your body up to make a full and uninhibited turn. For example, weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the longer clubs), both feet flared out approximately 20 degrees with the knees similarly angled outward, arms hanging naturally from the shoulders (except for the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft), and hands even with the inside of the lead thigh are prescribed setup features of the swing system I teach. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through, and a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone. Now, having said that, I recently purchased a new set of PXG's, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently. The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. A belated question Tom. If you keep your trail arm connected in the down swing , wont the trail arm to some degree drag along your chest causing a loss of speed in the process?

  • @SagutoGolf

    Nope - there's no "drag" at all if this is executed properly. This puts the trail arm in a perfect, loaded position to fire powerfully through the zone, while at the same time preserving the ideal downswing path. There are two things at play that are embedded in your question: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm). Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - thereby enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. Can you talk a bit about face control in the swing? I've been trying to keep that trail arm glued in and my weight forward, but still tend to slash at the ball and hit with an open face. I know I'm still coming from the inside, but just have some nasty push slices because that face ends up open. How do I stop?!

  • @SagutoGolf

    Well, if the face is square at address and open at impact, then you are likely either 1) manipulating the club - consciously or subconsciously - with the hands at some point in the motion, or 2) some component of your swing is either out of sequence or not being properly executed. It's impossible for me to offer an accurate diagnosis without seeing your swing, which would be beyond the scope of this forum. You'll have to check me statement facts. I noticed that chuncky midsection players do this already because of their waist size. I struggle keeping the arm tucked in so tight, like Hogan. Also Hogan did this on full swings not all swings if I remember correctly.

  • @SagutoGolf

    @SagutoGolf

    9 ай бұрын

    Hi Rick, Mr. Hogan made adjustment to counteract his hooking tendencies that plagued him early in his career. For example, his weak grip and cupped left wrist condition. However, the tucked trail arm was not such a "compensation", and properly executed it can pretty much put the entire swing on autopilot. This is why my lesson series on this "trail arm magic" has helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a host of swing issues and experience great ball striking. By the way, it is certainly acceptable to have a few inches of space between the trail elbow and the torso at the top, just like I have in my swing. The key is that the arm has not lost its "tucked" orientation and the elbow is definitely not flying away, meaning that it is in perfect position to reconnect in the downswing. "Gluing" it in there is a "feel" that is necessary for most amateurs to achieve this desired action. @@SagutoGolf thanks for the reply. It’s more of a physical limitation. I don’t have the flexibility to come all the way around with straight arms without torquing the hell out of my lead knee and putting a lot of strain on my back. I’ve tried splaying my lead foot out and that helps some but my arm either has to fold some or in order to keep it straight I have to stop the follow through short with the shaft pointing right of the target line and the clubface open. Even with a ball between my arms I can’t get all the way around to a proper finish unless I bend my arm. I’m 65 and about as flexible as a 2x4. I signed up for the mini course ages ago and have watched pretty much all your videos but this one aspect of the 9-3 swing still haunts me. Due to a left shoulder injury and surgery 15 years ago the 9-3 swing is my full swing. Like I said I’m striking the ball very good so maybe folding the lead arm a little is just something I’ll have to live with. Out of curiosity what does it hurt to fold the arm a little? Loss of power? I hit the ball straight and my 7 iron distance is about 145yds.

    Hi Gary, There are a couple of things at play here. Regarding the first video that you referenced, the "feel" is straight arms. Of course the wrists hinge and the trail arm folds to 90 degrees, and I made a point to specifically mention that. Beyond that, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎 Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back to create that disconnected "width", turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness…. In actuality, our straight lead arm - which is the radius of our swing arc - provides all the width we need, and by maintaining our connections and staying centered the result is a very consistent, body-friendly, and extremely powerful swing. I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you, and I'm thrilled for your improvements to date!! It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oWSs1cWGqbGZpps.html Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept to the fairway woods and driver - it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) As it relates to the driver, many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball". (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) If you've not already joined, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level?
