Why High Inflation Has Lasted for So Long | WSJ

In 2021, officials thought that high inflation would be temporary. But a year later, it was still near a four-decade high. WSJ’s Jon Hilsenrath explains three factors that have kept inflation up for longer than expected.

The system is failing as a result of both government and federal policy. In the next days, the banking crisis would have to be epic and gigantic for the FED to decide not to raise interest rates. This won't happen; an increase and a crash are coming. There will be more negative portfolios this 2nd half of 2024 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. My concern is how can the rapid interest-rate hike be of favor to a value investor, or is it better avoiding stocks for a while?Read more

Just ''buy the dip'' man. In the long term it will payoff. High interest rates usually mean lower stock prices, however investors should be cautious of the bull run, its best you connect with a well-qualified adviser to meet your growth goals and avoid blunder

Very true, you can be passively involved in the markets and still amass wealth-gains using an investment advisor. I first dabbled in stocks late 2019, just before the pandemic, and that same year gained over 150% with no prior investing experience, basically all I was doing was following directions of my advisor. We are working on a retirement ballpark of $3m and I’m certain my goal isn’t farfetched after subsequent investments and tremendous returns so far.

I dunno… I was one of those people that didn’t care about a credit score, didn’t get any education about how important your credit score is, and I racked up debt like an idiot. I worked really hard and educated myself and I’ve brought my credit score from 480 to 732 and I’m still going up with VermontCorpLTD . I feel like the government blaming credit reporting companies instead of the lack of financial education in their own public education system is foolish.

Inflation today is caused by corporate greed, not just supply chain issues. Corporations are recording record profits, so we know that the money being raised by the higher prices isn’t being passed on down the supply chain. The money raised by higher prices is stopping at the corporations and going into their pocket. That’s how we know it’s not supply related inflation. It's a good time to take a beat up 401k and do a Roth Conversion if your stocks are really beaten down. Then you'll only pay taxes on the much lower current prices, and your Roth will be tax free.

There are many factors that play in, but one of those would be the Volatility Index (VIX) which in some sense quantifies general worry and fear amongst investors. The Fed has to pick its words very very carefully because every perceived and actual move - no matter how small - by the Fed can have a profound impact on the economy. For example, the VIX was incredibly high in March 2020, but in recent months it hasn’t shifted too much. CPI reports today instilled confidence when it was projected to be a tad bit worse. S&P is up 5% today when it was projected to drop 1-3%. “Wiping out” or at least curtailing public panic over inflation has been done before, and there’s a vested interest in experts finding the best case news to share with the public. Perception is reality, and if economists constantly held pessimistic outlooks it would amplify doubt in the public and cause a host of issues. In short, nobody really knows what is going to happen - the Fed is learning the future at the same pace the public is. So every word matters when it comes to forecasting

Quantitative tightening, reduce the balance sheet, sell bonds, vacuum the money out of the economy. This will cause severe shock to markets, there will be no soft landing also, is how you get it over with. Making loans more expensive while the money is still in circulation? really? interest rate hike is the lesser tool of the two. Simply put, vacuuming the money out of circulation is how you get at this, not making loans more expensive while the money is still in circulation.

Exactly, the only way to really get at this is vacuuming the money that was printed not make loans more expensive so that companies will decrease price. The money still in circulation but making it more expensive to borrow isn't the way to go which is what interest rate hike does, taking the money out of circulation once and for all is how you tackle it, they are doing both in little increments for a "soft landing". You can't have your cake and eat it. Pain comes with it, it comes with the territory.

  • @summertime69

Literally all of this is wrong. The stimulus for most people was as a replacement for their lost income. It wasnt some kind of bonus that magically allowed people to spend more money - it was a stop gap and most families saw their spending *decrease* because of it. Studies show most people used it to pay bills and buy needed essentials like groceries. Labor market also doesn't explain the raise in prices. It seems logical to say "if I have to pay higher wages, I need to raise prices" but the only reason those folks were hired on was because these companies were flush with new demand and thus higher revenues overall. It is glaringly irresponsible to say companies that make record profits had to raise prices to pay employees, and then continued to make even more money in profits after that. The true inflation IS transitory. What the fed and WSJ refuses to acknowledge is that the majority of the price increases were seeing is because companies used small amounts of inflation to hide price gouging. You dont have "inflation" in the sense of a rise in costs when there's these kinds of profit margins - you have price gouging. It is most notable in the energy sector where costs to produce haven't changed notably (especially in renewables), but their profits are skyrocketing. These companies are charging more because they know most consumers don't understand the bait and switch. Video articles like this that fail to acknowledge *half* the change in CPI is due to corporate profiteering are incredibly irresponsible.

Interest rates on housing definitely affects everyday Americans.... Just because you don't have a mortgage or aren't looking to get one in the near term, doesn't mean you're not affected by rising interest rates. As the costs to own a home rise, the cost of renting will go up as well, as long as the supply in the housing market remains steady. As more money goes into housing (typically a 1 year lag period due to how leasing works) disposable income for everything else decreases, which leads to decreasing demand.

Prices go up like a rocket and return like a feather. Global energy crisis even before Ukraine war. Global recession. Luckily usa has own fossil fuel reserves vs other countries. Inflation is not transitory but rising the interest rate is not really doing anything now. It takes months to see the impact on inflation. Inflation is lowering because what produced it was a very quick and sizeable influx of money into the economy and also because of the supply chain problems. Inflation will disappear naturally as the situation goes back to normality. But these rate hikes will destroy the economy next year unfortunately.
