I come back to this video every once in a while. I think it fascinates me because I’m watching something that makes me genuinely emotional, but what he’s done is completely unrelatable as a physical action. I will never know what it’s like to cut off 60+ years of nail growth, but I can also see how monumental it is. This man has led a fascinating life, even if I don’t know much about it beyond what was said in the video. I feel like there’s more to the story when it comes to the beating that led to his decision, but I guess there’s always more to the story when you’re a human being. His nails are like the physical manifestation of “everyone you know is fighting their own battle.” Navigating life physically was challenging enough, but in order to keep these nails you’d have to be making the same decision every day-even subconsciously. The fact that he finally made the decision to cut them is just so compelling in that regard.

Coming from the same city, used to see this guy when I was a kid. He always left the house with a bag in his hand which made me question my mom repeatedly, why does this uncle go for shopping and to get groceries all the time. She smiled and then told me the reason he did so and that he carried all the nails inside the bag. After telling me the backstory she took me to his bungalow where there's a huge portrait of him framed, about the size of a wall mural.

I don't think when he started growing his nails he had the ambition to get his name in the books infact being an Indian myself I am pretty sure almost 50-60% of the people still don't know about the existence of record books like these. Someone must have suggested him to contact guniess book of records and see if he could get some money from there since he was having trouble financially. Wild. I remember hearing about this guy as a little kid back in the '90s. Didn't know he was still alive, much less still had the nails growing until a few years ago. If I recall correctly, he had to show them to TSA every time he went on a flight or something of that nature.

He literally sacrficed his left hand and has chosen to live with a dissability. No one told him to. His friends and family probably insisted on cutting nails much earlier, yet he remained assertive and kept on going for 66 years. Just out of pure spite. Human grit and determination. Patience and perseverance. Sheer willpower. This human drive led us to this level of civilization in so many fields. Indeed a Lesson of human determination.

That has to be the most dangerous and sacrificing world record anybody could ever do. He WAS completely fine, but out of spite, he got his left hand deformed by overgrowing those nails that became rock-soild and as long as a snake. But it is satisfying he decided to let them cut loose and preserve his nails in a museum.

Hard to fathom that his nails outlived a lot of peoples lives.

At least he got to experience what it's like to have them off before he passes away. His dedication to one up his teacher is pretty crazy. He should have used that dedication towards something else but if that's what he chose to do and wanted then so be it.

I remember seeing on tv as a kid. I’m happy for him, that he was finally able to let it go.

The dedication, determination to keep his nails despite all the problems and rejection it caused him… was it worth it?

The dollar amount he received for those nails is probably dwarfed by the income a museum will get in return. What a painful way to live 66 years of one’s only life.

nails grow without any effort it's not your mind or discipline it's lack of doing anything at all. discipline and commitment would be keeping them well groomed regularly and in top-notch condition that the best level of shortness and actually becoming wealthy and fulfilled.

Y’all are taking about the wasted potential, meanwhile I can’t stop thinking about how this is what we humans can grow as if we don’t groom ourselves…Can you imagine aliens coming to earth and seeing a person with full body/head hair, nails, and wild teeth and thinking it is what we look like? To the core, we have the potential to look like completely different creatures.

mmm yeah but his nails grew this long cus he didnt use the hand, nails are suppose to break off short when we use them, like cats use scratching posts. so even if we were living completely wild with no beauty or hygiene standards, i recon our nails would naturally stay short

This is a sad example of what people will put themselves through to gain acceptance from others. I'm glad he finally decided to cut them off.

Hats off to his will power, patience and his sacrifice throughout the years!

This man is the very reason why no one should waste the one life we have. Everyday you wake up should be a day of self discovery, connections, exploration and to admire the beauty around.

Dear Mr. armchair psychologist, sure it might have started as a trauma thing but it certainly wasn't the trauma that kept him at it, and he seemed to be pretty content despite the difficulties he experienced as a result. I think it was eventually that he was more proud of how long he'd managed to grow them than anything.

This poor guy wasn’t able to really live his life because of this choice. And because of his choice others had to be affected by it too. I feel bad for his family.

I read about his feat in the Guinness Book during the 80s. Hats off to him for having maintained the nails for decades. It was quite shocking for me to learn that he's an octogenarian now!!

Guy practically cut off one of his hands to have a Guinness World Record.

@@Nov_Net His arm was completely unusable. And if your arm was cut off at the shoulder you at least don't have it getting in the way. Here, he had trouble laying down, walking, and just existing in general. All the disadvantages of being an amputee and then some more
