I think Griffith having so much time away from Guts is a great thing. Leaves the two characters to pursue their own goals and that’s great for an antagonist. It also builds up all of the possible outcomes and feelings for when the two finally collide again. In the year 2069

If i were any of you I would be HATING the author for this unforgiveable behavior, and would have already quit, yet here i am still checking in 9 years later, so maybe I'm under the same spell as you. and you're an idiot if you give him the excuse of it taking a long time to draw the artwork... Yeah it does, so he deliberately drags the plot on with chapter after chapter of barely anything happening or plot moving forward. He'll deviate or delay the main plot just so he can draw a bunch of shit he doesn't need to. This guy needs to be sent to prison to finish this series after all his delays. I'm sick of him wasting my effing time. FINISH THE STORY WHILE I'M STILL YOUNG AND CARE. THIS IS THE TIME IN MY LIFE WHERE I NEED TO SEE THE ENDING OF BUZZURK

I always thought that he still loved Guts in his own twisted way and that he was angry at Guts for leaving him. But seeing how Griffith didn't understand his own feelings, he didn't understand why he let Guts go. Like Godo said: Hate is the place one goes to, when they can't bear sadness. He might tell himself that Guts is just not worth his time anymore. But I think he is lying to himself and that these feelings he repressed are still there to a degree. Especially when you consider that Femto is the jungian shadow of Griffith. And when you consider that pretty much all apostles still had a bit of their humanity in themselves.

In my mind it’s simple, Griffith was the one everyone idolized. The leader of the band of the hawk. Powered by his Behelit an unnatural good luck charm. Enter Guts he through his own will and determination becomes stronger than Griffith and defeats him. That not only destroyed their dynamic as leader and right hand man but also undermined the very essence of Griffith’s status as leader and threatened his dream. Basically Guts became a major threat and Griffith blamed his departure for the atrocities and torture he had to endure. It broke Griffith and proved guts didn’t need him but he needed Guts. Once Griffith became femto he had the upper hand again and now becoming a god like demon he decided to punish Guts for even daring to stand against him. Raping his love who guts also stole from Griffith as well. So Griffith punished them by killing all of the band cursing casca and guts both to be forever hunted and reminded of the sins against him. Toying with the mice he caught. But slowly it seems Guts is overcoming all the odds again creating his own band to stand against Griffith’s holy freak army.

Griffith just wants Guts to suffer only to lose to him at the end of Guts' struggling journey. It’s like taking revenge for all those years staying in the torture Chamber. Even though it’s not Guts's fault, Griffith likes to think so in that way, putting blame on Guts.

Bruh Griffith was only in there for a single year. And he long since got his petty revenge when he raped Casca and made Guts watch. Griffith at this point just doesn't care. Before sacrificing, Griffith said that Guts was the only thing that made him forget his dream, so one of the main reasons he sacrified was to leave Guts behind. Evidence of this is also the fact that the first thing he does after being reborn is go see him just to know if he could still feel something. Killing him, in his mind, would mean aknowledge the fact that Guts is stil someone in his life that matters so much that he should stop his existance.

I think the pages in 2:39 and 4:05 reveals a little more than it may first appear. In the pages at 2:39, where Griffith says Guts is the same person he was when they first met, that is both true and a lie. We have seen Gut's journey and know that he has changed and has learned to be a better person, but is still in danger of falling into his old ways. Griffith's comments and physical resemblance to his old self say more about him than Guts. Unlike Guts, he has not changed and grown and clung to his old self (or the illusion of his glorious old self). Being just as immature and selfish he was when he met Guts. The pages in 4:05, where Gut's thinks to himself that Griffith was different and yet more Griffith, it reveals that Griffith has not matured, and has instead let his more negative traits consume him and erase the positive traits he had in the golden age. The positive traits that once restrained his negative traits (his love for Guts, Empathy towards his men, etc.) have disappeared and the monster within has been released. I think you are right when you say that Griffith both cares and doesn't care about Guts. He loves seeing Guts suffer for his enjoyment, but he also sees him as nothing of importance. He both wants Gut's gone, but also wants him to alive. As long as Guts is consumed with hating him, Griffith is content, since that means Guts is under his control, just where he wants him. However, I think there is also more going on inside Griffith. In the Golden Age, Griffith's innocent smile was a facade that he used to hide his emotions and vulnerability. He did it when Casca tried to comfort him after he started self-harming, and he did it when Guts asked him personal questions. I think he is doing the same when he confronts Guts on the mountain. He is hiding his emotions (whatever is left of them), whether they are feelings of love, hatred, anger, regret, or all of them. I think he could sense Guts was escaping his control when he abandoned his quest for revenge to find/rescue Casca. Which is why he went to visit Guts, and possibly finally destroy him or rekindle his control over him. But who knows, maybe he is just a shell of the man he once was. IDK.

It could be because killing Guts would mean Griffith losing something. Griffith wants to dominate, he wants everything. But he also does not want to sacrifice anything, hence his anger at Guts leave and his care for the Band Of The Hawk pre-Femto. Guts is unique as a person, and Griffith knows if he kills him, no other man will live up to that legacy for a long time. Its similar to the God Hand girl that Guts met. He’s unique, one of the only humans to survive the eclipse and raze apostles. So he keeps him alive for the sake of having him, knowing that Guts is likely never going to be a real threat, yet his perseverance making him unique.

I thought it was because he loved him and has a sick since of ownership over him. His whole self destructive attitude after Guts left during the Golden Age, his words that were cut short right the Godhand summoned him and the egg of the king activated, even when he raped Casca, he spends the whole time looking at Guts. Griffith always has this air of superiority about him. I got this since of him, from every one of his appearances in the Golden Age and the one scene I saw during Berserk 2016 (not reading the manga till I have enough money to buy large chunks, volumes, and or omnibuses of it). Even in the Golden Age, that's the whole reason everyone in the Band of the Hawk follow. TFW you realize that Guts has always been sort of a "trophy" or "plaything" for Griffith. From the day he joined when he killed a couple members of the band of hawk, Griffith didnt even care he just wanted him for himself, he could've killed him but didn't for the same reason I think he isn't killing him now. Its the same thing when Guts kills Apostles, Griffith still doesn't care because he needs to maintain his control over Guts. Killing him would almost defeat the purpose of Griffith becoming a Godhand. And also Even more emphasizes my point when you realize that it was only when Griffith lost control over Guts when he left that he completely lost it.

God Hand are different having the whole last tear thing but Ubik seems to have a sense of humor and Slan made a point of how much she feels about other people if you know what i mean. Femto wouldn't have done that naughty thing to Casca if he didn't care (and don't give me that "oh he did it because he knew he needed to use the baby's body later" thing).

Perhaps Griffith has a sort of multiple personality disorder from the constant amount of relatively forced change. Things such as his old golden age mentality and personality, the despair ridden tortured griffith, turning into Femto revoking his humanity, the moon child and the fact he might have been given some humanity back by force (IE protecting casca out of pure child instinct) , and the whole king persona having to appear as a good and kind ruler. Perhaps griffith doesnt have any control over his own self and thats why its so flip flop on to what he does and how he does things related to guts.

Nah there is definitely a reason that he is keeping Gut's (and Casca) alive use your head. Guts and Casca are well known and respected members of the famous Band of the Hawk that ended the hundred year war. Guts is the famous leader of the Hawks raiders known for killing 100 men in a single battle. And Casca the only female leader amongst the Hawks. The people of midland know these two and would easily recognize them. They are also still respected and people would trust them. So if they were to stroll into the kingdom and start telling people the truth about what happened it would make a LOT of sense to the people given what they have witnessed with all the insane magic and army of demons. It wouldn't be hard to imagine the people of the kingdom could be convinced that Griffith is actually the evil bad guy. Maybe not all of them, but some. This makes Guts and Casca a liability and problem for Griffith. So why then would he allow them to live? It would make more sense for Griffith to kill them (and Rickert) to tie up any lose ends and squash a potential insurrection / revolt before it even started, and protect his image. So then why doesn't he? We can't be sure yet but it seems pretty obvious he is keeping them alive for a reason, because its clear he has every reason in the world to kill them. I have a theory but its certainly not concrete.

@KceeKit during the eclipse in the manga, Slan is watching Guts fight and she says something along the lines of "the more they struggle the more precious they become as sacrifices to Femto." Ever since reading that I thought maybe she meant that literally. Maybe he let them both live so that they could struggle more and more for years. Griffith eventually plans to complete the ritual which in my opinion never technically was completed. This grants him more power than the God Hand or the "Idea of evil" intended and he can usurp them. Or at least that is his plan.

People in the comments aren't understanding many things of the story. Griffith in his new form no longer has humanity, he doesn't feel anything towards Guts anymore. "He claimed he is free" of that humanity that once "made him forget his dream", meaning an obstacle for him (Guts). But as we know the new obstacles now are the feelings of the moonlight kid inside him, which will probably lead him to his downfall once again At this point questioning if Griffith loved (selfishly, possessively ofc) Guts is absurd. It's literally a crucial part of the plot in golden age, if he didn't love him he couldn't have sacrificed him in the first place, he wouldn't have risked his life for him twice, he wouldn't have forgotten his dream which is like the core of the whole disaster lol some just look at the picture it seems

He cared about both of them but through the events leading up to the eclipse, he decided that erasing his humanness and killing basically his family to open the doors to pursue his dream again was worth it. I think at this point he finds Guts amusing. Griffith does at least. But I think the part of him that is the moonboy (Guts and Casca’s son) does care greatly for both of them.

Femto is a partial being, one the "Beyond Existence" still acting on Griffith's protocols and urges. In evil ways, it means it's his glorious city right, RIGHT! While Guts thought, " His Dream is too large to follow it, I will get a dream large enough for my own destiny, which Griffith would respect." Griffith IMHO never considered that Guts would reach such a great regard--HE DOES NOW, despite their yawning limits of difference. (FOR NOW HEH HEH). I think other than his own friend easily swatted out of his way, like anyone else, Guts occurs in Griffith's thoughts very little. He has his Kingdom, despite cannibalizing his beloved men for power. Guts is just a man, nobody can challenge him, surely?

I love the question and I feel it somewhat deserves a more thorough analysis. For starters, it important to segregate the mentioned entities distinctly: Femto (aka the original Griffith), Griffith Reborn and The Moonlight Boy (assumption). At this point, the most interesting to look at are the first two, as we know very little about the third. Firstly, regarding Femto. A lot aligns with what you described, like him wanting Gutts to suffer or just relishing at the idea of taunting him. At the same time, this might be somewhat oversimplified. In the anime in particular, there was one point in time when he *really* wanted to kill him, and that's after his transformation during the Eclipse. If you look closely, as the Skull Knight was riding away with Gutts and Caska on his horse, it almost seems as though Femto was just barely discovering the true extend of his power. I would argue it must be overwhelming to suddenly have all that, practically out of nowhere. After that...arrogance kicks in. Femto is above the Apostles, whose lives are insignificant and by extension, Gutts isn't even worthy of his attention despite everything he was accomplished. He is, after all, the long-awaited king of the godhand. Why dignify "an insect" by killing them? As for Griffith Reborn, he is fueled by his his dream and megalomania, and aided by the Neo Band of the Hawks - who are all incredibly powerful. Why bother with Gutts? He is just a waste of time, and most likely someone like Grunbeld or Zodd will ultimately take care of him (again: arrogance). There is also, as evident by the reunion on the hill of swords, a small part of him that does NOT want to kill Gutts for reasons we all know - he is his son, absorbed by the Egg of the Perfect World. That, in many ways, might lead him (Griffith Reborn) to his demise. Though we do not know if both entities are fully "connected", but we can assume that to some extend. However, it may be the case that Gutts and his party will have to take down *both* Femto and Griffith in the end. Food for thought, and thanks for the video.

After fighting and struggling against many monsters and Ganishka, he could barely move his body, and while going to the boat, he saw Griffith at the distance, and Griffith surely knew that Guts was in that boat too, yet, he did nothing. He could've killed him easily, right there, for once, he could even ask Irvine to shoot an arrow straight to Guts and finish him off, but he didn't. Griffith did nothing even on the closest moment to death of Guts, and you helped me get the reason why Thanks :3

Griffith knows guts dosent have a behelit and even even if he had one he wouldn’t use it, driving guts insane and destroying his physical body to the level that’s griffiths body was when he was being punished for doing it with charlotte would make it so that guts had nowhere to go especially because guts has no behilit again, he would be so destroyed that he couldn’t care or act upon revenge with that body or broken mind of his and as Griffith was about to slaughter his body skull knight arrived. Now Griffith could stop skull knight and kill guts but he realizes that half of the job is already done and even if guts somehow manages to come for revenge he’s still no where near him and guts’s mind is basically done.

I don't think we're meant to take this story at face value. There's obviously more than what is given and perhaps it actually has to do with a lust for Griffith to see Guts suffering. It's actually like a very toxic relationship. And we know that Griffith replayed the moment Guts left him and the band when he wanted to stop feeling betrayed, laying with the princess. That's kind of what happens when you are rejected by someone you love, and you'd do anything to get back at them to get SOME reaction. Because any reaction means that he still cares. What I think is he wants to keep Guts focused on him. He wants him to feel hurt because a deep hurt such as the one felt by Guts can only come from a place of burning passion. It is all he can get from him now and in toxic relationships, there comes a point where you enter a point of no return and settle for the sickly push and pull addiction, accepting that you are vile and that there's no going back from it. Or he really doesn't give a shit and I'm reading too deep into it

Then guts will finally succumb/give up to his hardest moment when fighting the God Hands to ends up activating his Behelit to forgive Griffith, and this will free Femto from his demon ways. Femto will have an epiphany and fights against the God Hand with Guts. Griffith will end up sacrificing himself and says his last loving words to Guts. 😔 I truly hope the ending will be a an epiphany and a great lesson for the characters. don’t believe that, as femto he stretches out his hand to kill skull knight but hesitates and let them escape when he sees guts. he later watches his hand in confusion as to why he didn’t do it. some tiny affection is still there. if it wasn’t then he wouldn’t have been so personal raping casca and staring down guts. on the hill of swords, griffith shares the feelings of the child, he feels his heart pound. it is not seperate. Yes he is able to feel due to the child inside him and yes they are indeed the child’s, but he is still feeling it. guts was also important enough for him to visit, and yet he doesn’t kill him this time either, it would be beneficial for griffith to do so as guts know the secret, but no, he doesn’t. Idk why everyone has determened that Guts is nothing to griffith. I feel that one of the big themes that was presented early on even in the black swordsman arc was the tiny bit of humanity remaining in the demons. We see it with the count and his daughter, Rosine and Jill, and finally Guts and griffith. Yes it’s not like griffith cares a lot, but there’s something stopping him in killing him
