i was looking for exactly this comment before i said it. the hammer brother before bowser in 8-4, with the lava pit and 2 fireballs, is the hardest part of the game. if you can get there with a fire flower, by not getting hit for the entirety of world 8, it lets you breeze to the end.

The Hammer Bros in Mario One are the most terrifying. In the levels they are placed, you have rarely access to the Fire Flower. and if you are in an area with a single hammer bro and wait for a while, he is coming towards at you. He literally leaves his territory and walks to you.

Not sure if the mechanic is re-used in Maker (or any other Mario game for that matter), but in the original SMB, the Hammer Bros will get impatient and charge you if you wait too long. Adds one more element of danger, particularly if you've maneuvered yourself between him and his hammer arc. You can actually take advantage of this to cheese your way past that pesky last Bro in the very last level, since you have the high ground and can just jump over him when he gets close.

Alright, so the hammers might be bad, but are the Sledge Bros worse? They might be a bit slower, but their projectile is bigger, and they stun Mario whenever they land from a jump. Then there's the Boomerang Bros. Although they can through one thing at a time, it can still hit you on its return if the Bro misses the initial shot. However, the Boomerang Bros. are a bit more tolerable when they're in multiple numbers since a rang from one Bro can hit the other, but I digress.

I think you mean, this is why Hammer Bros. are AWESOME! Honestly, can you think of any Mario enemy more scarily competent at keeping Mario at bay? They're like Bowser's ultimate elite line of defense against jumping plumbers. The fact that they're so perfectly suited to stopping you dead is exactly what makes them awesome. Almost kinda makes you wish you could play as the little guys.

The ending was hiliraous, I thought you where just gonna get killed by the hammer bro, but playing Mario maker was unexpected

But Arlo, you forgot something. The Hammer Bro. has one more trick up his sleeve. If you sit and watch him long enough, he (and his brother) will charge you. Yes, they will actually move toward you. It really adds to keeping you on your toes. I can't tell you the number of times I've died because of this same mechanic. They certainly deserve your claim of deadly enemies.

@@masonasaro2118 Well that's the game where they debuted and it is largely what people refer to when they mention the brothers. It's the game where the two-story jumping mechanics were best employed. Mario 3 did it too, but only for one-off battles, not part of an actual stage. I never sat long enough Mario 3 long enough to see if they would.

@@PetProjects2011 Not really, they don't always do that. Some do and some don't, most are normal in SMB2 Japan. Though there are more of them who DO do that in the All-Stars version than in the original.

Think of them like mini bosses.

Hammer bro is my favorite Mario enemy for most of the dynamics you listed. It was designed specifically as a defensive enemy that prevents Mario from moving forward. Defensive enemies by nature counter rush-down player mentality, so naturally hammer bros give the player some of the most trouble out of any enemy. - The hammer arc neutralizes Mario's most common attack method and forces him to think outside the box - The jump makes the enemy more complex, but also creates openings for attack or escape where previously there was none - The complexity of the hammer brother's attack pattern and near-randomness forces Mario to proactively look for openings to sneak past the hammer brother or attack it from below (or at a distance w/ the fire flower) - Using the hammer brothers in pairs and with distinct level design like the signature "double brick platforms" setup creates compelling combat scenarios where Mario must carefully navigate through ever-changing hitboxes and wait for the right moments to strike. Super Mario Bros. is a game about progressing forward and avoiding obstacles by maintaining proper positioning and exploiting windows of opportunity. Hammer brother is the second-to-last enemy in 8-4 because it succeeds at being the second-highest test of the player's skill.

Remember when they would start throwing there hammers faster the further you progress in the game if there in some of the last levels if they appear in them?

I like it when youtubers put in that small extra effort with the subtitles, they could really don't need to do them at all, but including an extra joke or two for those of us who have them on is really neat.

This was the first Arlo video that I ever watched, and I'm glad it was. This has to be his best video that he's made and uploaded.

Well, I usually play Mario on the Wii, so I get to encounter the even more annoying ice bros. The fact that they basically took the hammers, made them bounce twice, and made it so that they freeze you as well.

I actually love hammer Bros. They provide a good challenge for more skilled players but force the player to slow down and think.

maybe with two hammer bros yes, but honestly could go to the platform above that hammer bro, do the triple jump in newer games, or just time the jump once you get past that bro. But yes, these things are annoying af

I rarely ever include Hammer Bros in my levels. They are just... bAd.

You missed one problem with the hammer bros. The blocks they come with are always two layers, making it even harder to predict where they are going to jump. If they are on the middle layer, and you think he's going to jump up to the top layer, he can easily throw off your plan by just jumping down. I swear, every time they jump down instead of up I die.

solution to hammer bros 1.Run infront of the hammer bro. not close enough to be harmed by the actual enemy but not far enough to be struck by the hammers. 2. wait until the Bro jumps onto the higher layer of brick blocks 3. hit the block he's standing on from the bottom. 4.Repeat for his Bro.

One other thing that makes fighting them worse is if you’re big Mario and you try the attack-from-below tactic only to miss. And THEN you’re missing a block that kept them from falling back to ground level!

In Super Mario Maker, put wings on them. They will now follow a predictable pattern of throw one hammer, hop to the left or right, repeat that twice and then jump. The direction they hop is random but nothing else is and they never stray far from their original position.

That maniacal laugh at the end just kills me! Can't help but laugh along.
