    The biggest thing to understand about these kinds of birds is that in the wild, they live in flocks. They don't live alone. If you are always gone, your bird will likely be stressed, and it could lead to behaviors like plucking. They want to be with you, because YOU are part of their flock. If you don't give your bird attention or you keep them in another room by themselves, then don't be surprised when they get very stressed out and loud calling out for you, because that's what birds do when they are away from their flock. Birds are not domesticated animals like dogs or cats.

    They are exactly like cats and dogs but in bird form. They like hugs but they are really bipolar towards people like cats are. They are energetic and full of personality like dogs are. But they can fly. Haha. It's so much fun. My two tame ones are asleep on me right now. One of them had a scary accident this morning where he broke his ball and got it stuck on his head. It was scary and I almost threw up from fear. It's scary how attached you can get to them. I lost a GCC about a year ago at this point and I had only had her for about 6-8 weeks before she passed. I've had my two now for almost a year now as I got them both at the same time. One tip I have for GCCs is HAVE RASPBERRIES. They LOVE raspberries. All three GCC I have had loved raspberries and my brother's GCCs both love raspberries. It's a good thing to use as a treat.

    @@williamumanzor2594 I started using chop because they wouldn't eat certain food (like they would pick out only raspberries or grapes specifically) and they LOVE it. You dont have to get a proper machine, just chop it up fine (does take hours as you need it smaller that bite sized parts so they can't pick and chose it). This helps so much if you can be bothered to do it (I personally gave up because I'd spend hours every couple of days making enough for like 20 birds) They try everything now though which is cool

But as I said in the video, if you're already prepared to have a bird in your life, a GCC is a good one to get. I wish you all the best with your future bird. Trello was a Christmas bird. I bought him for the family on December 20, 2014. Well, I say I bought him for the family, but I actually bought him for me. We had lost our last budgie, and I wanted another bird, and the GCC had been at the top of my list for some time, because like you, I had done a lot of research on it, and it just seemed like the right bird for me.

    Trello is still nippy, even at almost 6 years of age. However, I've worked with him long enough to be able to read him. It's not out of anger or aggression. It's kind of habitual, and I don't think he knows that it sometimes hurts. Usually, it's out of excitement, and he just doesn't realize that he's biting a little too hard. But more importantly, I've learned to work around it, instead of being afraid of it. I have a couple of daughters that are learning to read him as well. So he gets good socialization with different members of the family.

    I've only ever had budgies for quite a long time. They're super cute and fun to watch, but I agree they're not the most affectionate birds for handling which is probably what most people want. If I were to get a different bird I'd want one that would enjoy hanging out with me while I'm working and around the house. Of course I'm doing all the research I can to make the best informed decision before actually getting one.

    @@petanything in my experience it really matters how they were raised. Hand raised babies or babies that grew up nearer to humans of course are much easier to tame than the mass produced farm raised birds. The basics are step up, step down, come to you when called, flying to a perch you point to, and going into his cage when asked. Training is fun for you and the bird, strengthens the bond between you and will save you problems down the road. Green cheeks are known for being easy, and eager, to train and that has been my experience.

And you should get another, every individual bird is going to have a different personality, but as long as you have time to spend/bond with the new one, theses green cheeks are all very silly and like to goof around! Jake is one year and 5 months old and just thriving with happiness! I've had him since he was 3 months old, learned alot from my little guy, he talks alot, and I mean clear sentences, took him a bit but know he'll say everything we say to or around him, crazy Jake! I'm not really an expert, but I would first try to get the bird to associate your hands with treats. Hand him/her a few treats, and then hold one in one hand in such a way that he/she has to step up on your other hand to get to it. During this time, use the words, "Step up." That's how I trained my GCC, and consequently, his first words were "Step up."

    My neighbor had her green cheek on her back porch during the summer. It broke my heart. I visited the bird a few times, and it was obvious that the bird was in need of affection. I have had birds in the past, and I am aware of what it means to be a bird owner with that being said dang they are very affectionate. Also, quite honestly they are destructive. At least this one is likes to chew on all the wood frames around the doors. I do have him fully flighted, and he is a funny, entertaining bundle of feathers. Does anybody want him. 😅. Not kidding.

    Are there personality differences between male and female green cheeks? Which are friendlier or less aggressive? I’ve also got two kids and although I want a caique really bad I’m being told that maybe a green cheek would be better for the family but trying to figure out the perfect type to chance it on with our needs

    There are differences between one bird and another, regardless of gender. Just like every person is different, every bird is different. You may have one male that's aggressive, and another male that is tame. It really just depends on the bird's personality. And a kid's reaction to a bird depends on the kid. I have 9 kids. Some of them keep their distance from the bird, while others play with him often. I have a 4-year-old son that loves to hold him, while my 12-year-old son would rather not for fear of getting bitten. But education is key. Even my kids that prefer not to handle Trello at least know how to deal with him if they have to.

    What is the first training step should I do for this cute tiny parrot?

  • @petanything

    @petanything

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question. Typically, when I get any bird, the first thing I like to do is train them to step up. This can take time and patience, as your bird first needs to get used to human hands and know that they are a good thing. Now understand that I am not a parrot trainer. What I do may or may not be the best way. But first, I start by seeing if I can hand my bird treats. Get it to trust my hand, and associate my hand's presence with treats. Once I get to that point, I hold a treat with one hand just out of reach, so that the bird has to step up on my other hand to get it. Throughout this training process, I'm using the words "step up," which consequently were my green cheek conure's first words. This also can take a lot of time and patience. Once you get this mastered, training for other things will become easier.

    Hi. I’m planning on getting a Pineapple GCC soon but I’m unsure of what kind of diet they have. My partner has an Indian Ringneck. Would those parrot pellets be okay for a GCC? In addition to fruit and vegetables of course. What does your bird usually eat? Can they eat nutriberries? Also! How big of a cage (HxWxD) should their cages be? :) Thank you!

  • @petanything

    @petanything

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Angelika. Your conure can eat the pellets from your partner's bird, but I've heard that smaller birds, like conures, need more seeds than the larger birds. I'm not really an expert. I just regurgitate what I hear other experts say. I would recommend getting a mixture that's made specifically for the type of bird you have. Trello seems to like seeds, but he'll eat some pellets sometimes, too. His food has some pellets mixed in. I also share certain fruits with him on occasion, like apples, grapes, and the occasional piece of orange. He loves fruit. He also has some little dried papaya bits that I give him on occasion as treats. NEVER FEED YOUR BIRD AVOCADOS! That could kill the bird. I don't know a lot about the nutriberries, but I know that they make a variety just for conures. I would refer you to any feeding instructions that they give with the product. As for cage size, Trello resides in a cage for much larger birds. Obviously, the bigger the cage, the better. But you want to make sure that the bars are spaced so that your bird can't put its head through them easily and get stuck. When Trello first came to us, he lived in a smaller cage where previously I had 2 parakeets. I cleaned the cage and let him use it. While it wasn't huge, it sufficed, as he spent more time outside the cage, anyway. It wasn't long, though, before I got him the large cage that he has now.

But I eventually got some sort of bond goin with him and he’s not as much of a pain but he’s still a brat lol. I’d like to know if I got a gcc wether it would act in a similar manner to my cockatiel that I bought? Or would it be nicer and easier to tame?

  • @petanything

    @petanything

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hard to say, really. You can't predict the personality of a parrot any easier than you can predict the personality of a child. Every bird will be different, even among the same species. Trello was very gentle when we first got him, and then weeks later he became somewhat aggressive until I figured out how to handle him and communicate with him. Even still, he can be aggressive if one doesn't understand how to deal with him. Yet I've seen other green cheeks that remain very tame.

    Yo I got a question. So I love all birds, especially these guys and I have trying to get a bird for years but my family travels a good bunch, especially during the summer. It’s not a lot like all the time, we have people watch our dog so that helps but I was wondering how you travel with bird?

  • @petanything

    @petanything

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a good question. With such a large family, we don't travel very often. But when we have gone on vacations, we've had someone come to our house twice a day to take care of our animals. If it's someone new, we have them come before we leave to meet Trello. We show them where the treats are and give them some training. We would prefer to have someone with bird experience come, but such people are hard to find. But if you're at a place in your life where everyone is gone from the home often and for days on end, now may not be a good time for you to get a bird. Birds need stability in their home. Most birds, by nature, are not solo artists. They need their flock. And for pet birds, their flock is their people. So if you are not able to give a bird that right now, then I would recommend that you wait until you can before getting one. This is both best for the bird, and for you, since a bird that is kept happy is less likely to be aggressive and need to be rehomed, causing more trauma for the bird and hardship for the owner.

    I got a green cheek conure yesterday and he is 3 months old. He got mixed up with us within 24 hours and loves us. The bad thing is his nibbling habit. He keeps on nibbling our fingers and neck. How can I stop him from nibbling because he don’t leave the skin when bite?

  • @petanything

    4 жыл бұрын

    Trello actually does the same thing. He's almost 6 years old now, and I have not been able to break him of the nibbling. Instead, I've just learned to work around it. There are times when nibbling turns to biting, not because of aggression, but because Trello just gets overly excited sometimes. I've learned to watch his body language to look for telltale signs of being so excited that he's gonna bite, and I have learned to wait until he's more calm. If anyone seeing this has any suggestions, we would love to hear about them.

Thanks!

  • @petanything

    @petanything

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the question. It really depends on the bird. Just like every human is different, every bird is different. Even within the same species, every bird will have a different personality. My best advice is to not try to force yourself on your new bird from day one. Bring it home and let it take in its new environment. Let it see you feeding it and giving it water over the first few days before trying to really interact with it. Watch the bird's body language. As the bird really starts to explore its surroundings, that's a good indication that you can start with little things like sitting next to your bird and talking to it. Try giving treats, but be careful. Move at a slow pace. If the bird recoils, back off and wait. If the bird shows signs of aggression, try giving with a spoon for a while. Keep trying little interactions like this before trying to train to step up. Feel free to take my advice with a grain of salt, as I am not a professional bird trainer. I just simply have had a number of birds. I admit that I still make mistakes with them. Just remember that every interaction with a parrot is a training session. There are lots of resources both in books and online that can go into depth on training your bird. Good luck.

    You should definitely introduce your bird to the pet sitter first and let them get comfortable with each other if you haven't already. The pet sitter should be able to handle your bird with no problems. I would not recommend removing your bird from your home while on vacation into a brand new environment as this could stress them out and scare them, they may feel like they've been abandoned and fall into a depression. Familiarity is your bird's best friend, they will feel more secure in your own home and with people they already know. This will make the separation easier.

    It's really hard to say. Green cheeks are considered to be the quieter conure. However, Trello proves to me that that is not always the case. It also depends on how cool your neighbors are. If I were your neighbor, I would be totally cool with it. If the neighbors that I actually have next to my house were your neighbors, they would come and harass you daily because of any small peep that they hear from your bird. So it's really hard to give a good answer to your question. You might want to talk to your neighbors to see how they feel.

    Green cheeks ARE known to be the quieter of conures. My Trello, I think, must be an exception. How long have you had him?

    @@christiesilva6918 if he’s a baby, and in a new environment, then I would expect this behavior. As he grows, and gets more used to his environment, things may change. Being a new bird, I would also take him to a vet for a checkup. This will help you establish a relationship with a vet for your bird, and you can have your bird DNA tested to find out the gender for sure.

    Do the green cheek conure talk back. Or is that a different bird?

    Hi Holly, Green cheeks are capable of talking, however not all do. Within any species, there are talkers and non-talkers. Trello, my little green cheek, talks a lot. Check out some of my other videos to hear him talk.

    When I bought Trello, he was $300, and that was after I talked them down on the price. Pineapples aren't usually any more expensive than the fancy green cheeks. Now turquoise green cheeks, those can tend to be pricey, just because you don't see them as often.

    How is the gcc when I go to work my parents will be home with it I work 11 hours a day?

  • @petanything

    @petanything

    Hi Saiful, I think the question that you need to ask is, "How are my parents with the GCC when I got to work?" Birds, parrots in particular, are very social creatures. What I mean by that is that they require a flock. For parrots that are kept in captivity, AKA pet parrots, their flock is the humans with which they live. So if you're not there, you'll need to make sure that your parents will be OK with your GCC, and that they won't be scared of it the first time they get bit, and avoid being around it forever-after, keeping it locked in its cage. I also spend a lot of time working outside the home. However, I have a wife and 9 kids. About half my family members aren't really Trello fans. I have little kids that still don't really know how to handle a parrot. But I also have kids that play with him frequently throughout the day. Often, we'll leave the cage open and let him come out and play on the playtop above the cage. However, after a few minutes on the playtop, he tends to fly off to wherever my kids are, being the social bird that he is. So with that, just make sure before you get a bird that you're prepared, not just for its physical well-being, with a cage, food, and toys, but also for its emotional and social well-being. Birds are not meant to be in captivity. But the hard fact remains that they are being bread in captivity, so we might as well do our best to give them the happy life that they deserve. I hope this helps. Take care.

    I've said it many times in other videos, and other comments. A bird's affection cannot be determined by its species. Every bird is different, just as every person is different, even in the same species. My advice would be to do your research on both, and decide based on your own education which one will suit you better. Before making a decision on which bird to get, make sure that you are prepared with everything that you need to take care of a bird. Make sure that you have an environment that will be good for the bird's physical and mental well-being. Make sure that the bird will be mentally stimulated with toys and lots of interaction from people that live in the home. The truth is that either bird could be just as good as the other, but it's all up to you.
