We start by paying tribute to the man behind the music, highlighting his incredible journey from a young musician in Canada to a global icon. We delve into his standout songs like "Sundown" and "If You Could Read My Mind" which have captivated millions and discuss how his music's popularity surged posthumously, echoing his timeless appeal.
The video then navigates the recent complex turn of events - the sale of the commission rights to some of Lightfoot's music by the ICM Crescendo Music Royalty Fund. This sale has significant implications for Lightfoot's six children - Fred, Ingrid, Gaylen, Eric, Miles, and Meredith - and the inheritance they stand to receive.
We explain how the sale of these rights, originally held by Lightfoot's former manager Albert Grossman, affects the Lightfoot family's potential income from Gordon's music. We bring in expert insights to demystify the complexities of music rights and royalties, illustrating how the business side of the music industry operates even after an artist's demise.
Whether you're a longtime Gordon Lightfoot fan, a music industry enthusiast, or someone interested in the intersection of music and law, this video offers valuable insights. Join Facts Verse in exploring the fascinating narrative of Gordon Lightfoot's enduring legacy and the future of his music in the wake of his death.

Gordon was always financially shrewd. He had Real Estate holdings as well as being worth over 30 Million dollars. His family was his top priority. They will not be left out in the cold. Neither will his band members and business people. He was a generous guy in real life.

The best tribute I've heard/read in recent weeks is he wanted all of the players in his band to sound like one guitar. What a perfect description.

Gordon Lightfoot was (and still is) my biggest musical influence. I heard his first album recorded in 1966, way back in 1970 through headphones plugged into an expensive stereo system. "Steel Rail Blues", a ballad, hooked me right then and there ! No wonder Bob Dylan's producer, Albert Grossman also became Lightfoot's producer. I used to go see Gordon's sellout show in November back in the mid 80's, and was mesmerized by his creations, and performance. My favourite song of his is "I HEARD YOU TALKING IN YOUR SLEEP", which never saw the success that it should have. I do not know if it got much AM radio airplay at the time it was released, or ANY airplay. It is a incredible work of musical both musically, and lyrically. The man was a genius in his own way. Gord also had a talent for creating a few songs with a Latin flavour, the Mexican ballad, "MIGUEL" is one of the best ballads ever composed, in my opinion, and, "I'LL DO ANYTHING" seems to have a Latin feel to it. Many people have never heard either beautiful song (give them a listen). There are so many of his songs that I love.

The assumption made in the video is: since he sold his streaming rights, his children won’t inherit much. That is not a forgone conclusion. Usually, artist get a lump sum in exchange for the ongoing income generation. They sell the anticipated cash flows over years for a discount for a lump sum. The bond market has done this for years. Estimates of Gordon Lightfoot’s net worth at death is about $40 Million. Not too shabby of an estate.

I guess what's confusing to me is the assertion that because Lightfoot's heirs will not benefit from future commercial royalties it automatically means they are losing a large share of money. What the narrator doesn't say (at least I don't believe I heard it) is the amount Lightfoot sold the catalog for. Recently artists like Dylan and Springsteen have sold their catalogs for hundreds of millions of dollars. Now, maybe Lightfoot's is not quite in that range, but I'm sure it went for a pretty penny indeed. So, wouldn't it be correct to assume his heirs will profit handsomely from the sale of his music rights? It's the old one in the hand is worth two in the bush, so I'm not really sure the premise of this video is all that correct.

😢🤔 So you say in the video title, that his children 🧒 will not inherit his millions. Maybe so, but the greedy evil 😈 Tax-man will !. Death duties are 74%.in my country. The Tax_Man will be laughing 😂 all the way to the bank 🏦.

Kind of misleading title. They only won't receive royalties from his music. He had a net worth of around 40 million dollars. I'm sure they will receive some of that.

  • @gordtulk

Completely misleading title. Song rights were likely sold for millions and to simplify lightfoots estate settlement. Presuming his children are the main beneficiaries they will get millions without the wrangling over what to do with the rights. This videos title should be corrected…

On a completely different note, look at the TV set & you will see 3 colors. red, green & blue, A.K.A. the primary colors. What they are teaching kids now have yellow, green & blue as the primary colors. Can't read, add or write but they still graduate.

One of the greatest musical legends of all time. But I was always disappointed...no, disgusted...that he succumbed to his daughters whining to change a lyric in If You Could Read My Mind. He already took the blame for his own part of the marriage break up in the song and only gave his ex one single line of responsibility but his daughter had the audacity to attempt to take that away. Those lyrics were HIS feelings on the matter, no one elses. I wouldn't have done it if I were him. I'll never listen to the changed lyrics. Original only.
