Why God is Imaginary

Ғылым және технология

In this thought-provoking video, we delve into the age-old question of the existence of God, offering a critical analysis of the various arguments that suggest God may be nothing more than a product of human imagination.

I think it's also fair to say that the power of prayer is also imaginary. People say they pray and then God acts on or ignores their prayer. But, if the desired outcome they prayed for comes true, they immediately assume that God did it. Which means THEY have access to the power of God. THEY have the power of God. Which, on its face, seems rather absurd and delusional.

Absolutely. Also, prayer is an expression of doubt. If God is omniscient, he should know what you need, so you shouldn't have to pray. Unless God just likes to watch you beg for it.

Of course prayer is imaginary. All prayers to a god are "answered" in one of three basic ways, Yes, No, or Wait. You will get one of these same three answers by praying to a box turtle, a tuna fish sandwich, or a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge (my personal deity of choice!). Anyone saying otherwise isn't being honest.

there is very little difference between a cult and a religion, a cult is merely a small religion, especially if you get into the fundamental religious side of things, they act very cult-like, though all religion has cult mentality and cult roots. Then we have new-age religions which are modelled on cults, Scientology as a perfect example.

@@MichealHoward-cb8on it's not as simple as that, I'm afraid It's a matter of means for third world countries and in second/first world countries its a byproduct of capitalism Many people lack the means to grow their own food, be it due to infertile soil, lack of water, insufficient agriculture knowledge, extreme heat/weather etc In capitalist countries the means to gain food in often inextricably linked to your ability to earn money, as few cities allow for sufficient land to grow crops. If you can only afford an apartment then you can't grow food at all. So you must spend your meager wage to aquire food, which is always sold at inflated prices, so as to ensure a profit is garnered every time the food changes hands Then we have the issue of "beauty selection". Anywhere from 20-40% of a specific crops yield will be deemed "too ugly" to sell, and therefore will often go to waste. Which reduces the profit margins of farmers and makes it more difficult to maintain crops in the long run as a result The earth most definitely has the capacity to grow enough food to feed all of the masses. Unfortunately if anyone ever was to grow enough food to feed the entire world they'd completely destroy the economy in doing so I'd have to say ignorance, a lack of means and capitalism are the most fundamental causes of starvation

What an absolutely perfect metaphor. But also, what a tragedy that even in 2024 there are people who actually believe in that kind of nonsense. And many use it to make themselves feel better when doing bad things. They act like rotten people and then go to church to pray, thinking that such an act clears their soul of their "sin". Which mean, they can do it again, and again, and again, and never have to change their scummy behavior, because they can just go to church, and ask for forgiveness, not from the people they hurt, but from some imaginary sky daddy. Some members of my family are like that, and I can tell you, it makes them worse as people than they would be without it.

The question of who or what created the universe is currently an unknown, maybe another universe that creates universes just as ours creates galaxies. But religions argue that God must have created that universe because they insist on applying the primitive concept of religion to fill in the gaps in science about things we don't yet know, or haven't discovered, and so on. However, by reversing that same argument on religions, we could just as easily ask, then who created God and why, and who created them, etc. In the 21st century we need to move past this medieval delusional concept of filling gaps in scientific discovery with theological excuses, which are no more believable than fairies, gremlins, bogeymen, hobgoblins, the Easter bunny, or Santa Claus (spoiler alert).

Oh dear, you’ve really missed the point here. I could not disagree more. Your reply came across as a wee bit arrogant and presumptuous. I’ve never believed in the concept of religion; it’s an archaic construct and I struggle to believe how any intelligent person ever could believe in. Equally I’ve never believed that the supernatural is anything but old stories and folk tales, never have. Now, you made a claim that God has no dependency on having to be created, but I’d like to turn the tables on that religious viewpoint by asking if God is supposed to exist, then where did he actually come from, i.e. how did he come into being in the first place, and what existed before he apparently popped out of nowhere? Then I could ask what created the existence, dimension, alternative reality, call it whatever you like, that God existed in before he got starting with making stuff; and what’s with all the other billions of galaxies then? How does religion explain them? And so on, because these are the exactly the kind of questions that religion loves to try and wriggle out of. It’s like the guy in the video talking about the invisible dragon was saying. And that was all there was to my comment, so I feel you have rather missed my point, unfortunately. I hadn’t meant to be confusing. Incidentally, I’ve never believed that the universe has always existed, because that makes no scientific sense whatsoever. The notion that the universe ‘willed’ itself into existence is equally ridiculous; I was just referencing some of the ideas being put forward in the discussion within the video. And btw, I’m not feeling or expressing any kind of desperation about anything here; your presumption about that actually made me laugh, it was so way off! Sorry, no offence.

@@theclocker7406 Humans by our very nature are curious. We ask where, when, why, what, and how. Science can’t offer an intelligent answer to these questions. Science in fact doesn’t provide any answers…scientists do and they interpret the data with a bias or open mind. The advancement in science started in the 16th and 17th century with religious students. There was no a conflict regarding God and science. Through the years some scientists grew tired of God being in science. They thought religion had no part in the scientific community. There was a movement to kick God out of science. Darwin is probably the best well known. He had an anti-God agenda and it gathered support throughout the science community. He made many assumptions and passed them off as facts. Neil Degrasse Tyson is an intelligent man , but when he makes a statement that we are all made of star dust, he loses credibility. The truth is many scientists are already bias to a point of view. Dawkins is so desperate for answers that he’ll say we were created by aliens. Then begs the question , who created the aliens and so on. Many of the well known mainstream scientists have no credibility as far as I’m concerned. To me it makes sense to believe in an all intelligent powerful force, who transcends space, time and matter. With this view I have understanding of the history of the world. I’m not saying I have all the answers, but many things make sense because I look through a different lens than most people.

You are right; Christians are called to give thanks in all things. In fact, the Bible says that believers should thank God 'for all things.' It is written, "God works all things out for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose." Point in fact, my highly abusive father, who told me how he delighted in thoughts of torturing and killing me. I could see the homicide in his eyes; he really wanted to kill me. Obviously, my self-esteem problems were mammoth! I was level two depression and feeling bad for myself, thinking I was stuck in my infinite discouragement in life. Yet, I would not trade places with anyone now. Working through the issues of severe abuse has brought me so close to God. Yet, sadly, atheists think that pain has no purpose. Honestly, I do not know how they get up in the morning. For example, before I met Christ, I remember my friends saying things like, "Life is a bitch and then you die!" Everything is crooked and broken. Yet, if you are wise, you will get to know Christ - just by asking! He died upon a Cross so that we might be the goodness of God. Hurry! Hell is a real place! As it is written, "All liars will have their place in the lake of fire." I don't know what that is, but I am eternally grateful that I will never find out! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

In a universe with no god ultimately the meaninglessness of no existence after our death, is a meaninglessness that we'll never be around to experience except during imagining nonexistence in advance. And since it won't ever be experienced we are worrying about nothing.

Prayer..just yesterday word went out that an infant being prayed for (brain cancer) passed after 4 years of prayer. No comment about this failure of all that praying, not thanks for the health professionals who did their best during her period (that was put down to God). The final comment from one church member was the infant can have a chance to grow up in the "new earth"; but not given any future chance in this world by God. Of course if this was pointed out, I would have "no faith".. but in what?

What failed? The prayers? I have no comment on that because I don't know the circumstances on any side of this. I can say first you or anyone who knows this person who had the brain cancer have my true sympathies on any pain they are feeling with the passing of this person. They will never truly die...the body does, but the person will never die beyond that. It's not as simple as why did God let a good individual suffer and or die. Everything is connected. Life is not just about each individual, and no individual truly is one. Sad, hurtful things have nothing to do with a lack of God or God "not answering prayers". Light does not exist without dark.

A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'... My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE... Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

Prayer can work by autosuggestion. There are instructions and best practices by the believers about how to pray and they are very consistent with this notion. Many simple-minded believers have a natural impulse to ask their god for things, for example when children pray for a good mark in an exam. Their more experienced elders will tell them that this is not how it works. To get the help they must make an honest effort and study hard. God will then help them keep calm and confident during the exam and they can get the desired mark. The person has to do everything themselves, but "god" will add what is within the powers of autosuggestion. It's really nothing more than that and a non-religious person can achieve the same things for example by telling themselves over and over again that they will stay calm in the exam as they have studied well and it will all be fine. - Prayer works, but it's just you talking to your subconscious mind.

Thanks to our imagination we are able to either deny or believe in God. Interesting to open myself towards theo-less theology and theories emerging from the imagination coming from our human brains, but it still didn't challenge the theology of Orthodoxy nor the imagination that involves around it.. to my view if I honestly open myself to it. Again, it is very interesting! And it sure helps to understand the Imaginary concept versus a Imaginary concept. For some it might enhance the imagination to challenge it, for other it might enhance their imagination to reinforce.

We can pre-empt the infinite regress argument with the same ill-logic that religionists use to support god. If one asks, "Then who/what created God?", and the religionist replies, "God does not require a creator", one could retort with, "If God doesn't need a creator, then the Universe doesn't either." There are no rules or logic in these arguments since the concepts and the rules are all invented. Geometry is a logical construct with rules and theorems, but none of them actually exist in reality. Every geometric concept we use in the material world is an approximation, but points, lines, and circles don't actually exist - they are simply ideas. The Bible and religions are full of useful ideas, but we should not extrapolate them beyond their utility.

If there's a creator, "he" is either indifferent or, well, terrifying. Existence as it is can't be explained in any other way.

I think that the greatest criticism that may be made of religion in general is that it requires believers to have unevidenced faith in its dogmata and revelations, rather than thinking rationally. The reasons for this are obvious: rationality is at odds with religious belief. But by accepting faith as a way of thinking, it then becomes available for co-option in quite different situations. It is epistemically indefensible, and a lazy way of thinking that lends itself to manipulation by demagogues pushing agendas that on greater reflection could be seen for what they are; perversions of justice, compassion, and human decency. This irrationality allows the faithful to disregard the misfortunes of others, because they believe them to be undeserving, their god or spirits having willed it so. It allows them to disregard the role of chance in life, and so believe the wealthy to be deserving. False beliefs lead to bad decisions, such as, when theists vote against progressive social policies because they believe their good fortune is due to their god's blessing, and the less fortunate are undeserving. Furthermore, various religions or sects validate discrimination or oppression against people who don’t share their beliefs, resulting in sectarian violence, even wars. It’s also problematical that some people believe in objective morality, and that its source is to be found in an ancient text. The morality on display is, necessarily, primitive and rebarbative. Moral philosophy has moved on since then, making our world a better place, despite the efforts of religious adherents. Compare the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights with the Ten Commandments. According to my values, religion does far more harm in our modern world than good.

@@sinclairj7492 how does “God-given” morality stack up on the old “objective/subjective” scale? Well, let’s see… Different theists believe in different Gods, each of which is said to have given different moral laws for us to follow. So, right there, theistic morality is wholly subjective based on which God you believe in. Even within a single God belief (Christianity, say), there are tons and tons of different denominations and sects who all interpret the supposed “word of God” in different ways from a purely doctrinal standpoint. So, once again, even within the Christian faith, theistic morality is wholly subjective based on which particular sect or denomination you belong to. Even within a single sect or denomination, it’s pretty much guaranteed that different preachers or even individual members will have their own specific interpretations as to just what their God wants them to do. Should you shun homosexuals or welcome them? Should you donate money to homeless people or is that just encouraging bad habits? Do women really need to be subject to their husbands’ will or not? Is it enough to just accept Jesus into your heart, or do you actually need to do good deeds and repent for your sins? Is it really harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, or is that just a metaphor? Does “turn the other cheek” mean you can’t own a gun for self-defense? Did God really just promise to “answer prayers” (and sometimes the answer is “no”) or did he actually promise to give “whatsoever we ask for in faith”? Is lusting after a woman in your heart really the same as committing adultery, or was Jesus just being metaphorical again? What’s the best way to “love thy neighbor as thyself” while still preventing transgender people from using the bathroom they feel most comfortable in? Is it OK to vote for somebody who claims to share your values if he talks about sexually assaulting women, mocks disabled people and lies all the time? What, actually, would Jesus do? And so on and so forth. Thus, theistic morality is wholly subjective based on the individual beliefs of each particular theist. For theists that claim to get their morality from holy scriptures written thousands of years ago, many of the oldest commandments and moral codes from those books no longer apply today. The explanation for this is usually that those commandments were given for a specific group of people, that the culture and socioeconomic conditions back then were different than they are today and/or that some sort of “new covenant” made those old commandments obsolete. It was OK to own slaves back then, but not today. It was commanded that disobedient children should be stoned to death back then, but we don’t need to follow that commandment today. Jews were required to keep kosher, but later Christians didn’t need to. All of which is to say that theistic morality can actually change over time and is wholly subjective based on the particular people to whom the moral commandments were given

I have this AWESOME time machine. But the ONLY way people can access it is if they worship & praise me every moment of their lives. They must accept me with their whole heart & have faith in everything I say. They MUST love me above all & do exactly as I say. Most importantly -- they must trust & accept that my words are inerrant. 💯 Then & ONLY then will they have the ability for the possibility of stepping into my awesome time machine. 😊💯

Nothing new here. Classic atheistic 'religion' pitch. Emotion? C'mon. Even believing your senses confirms reality requires faith in science. Anyway, to those who are confused, the storm in your heart is calling you to search and explore the truth. There is no harm in following that call to explore and remain open to reality. Read the gospels and I invite you to think for yourself. "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." - Matthew 7:7 I pray for you that you, like millions of souls in the world, may find Him and enjoy a wonderful and purposeful (albeit imperfect) life here on earth because of God, who loves us all and invites us to come to Him.
