Why Game Collecting Has Become RIDICULOUS In 2024
Ойындар
In part 1 of this appraisal series, Mort welcomes Chris of @lifeismysoundtrack to the garage to go through his collection while he considers whether to sell or keep while reminiscing on his favorite classic gaming memories.
But this is just the start of things to come...

I absolutely love this series, how open you are with your knowledge, and how happy everyone is when you tell them what they really have on their hands. Also, Chris seems like such a cool, laid back guy. And he's got great taste in games, too. Great video as always, Mort, and looking forward to seeing the rest of this collection!

Your videos really speak to my feelings of nostalgia for my youth and the warm fuzzy feelings that the games I played during those days tend to surface. These games spark memories of my past self. Memories of my life as a child, teen, young adult, etc. that aren't always immediately apparent or lucid from other reminders. Thank you, Mort. @@MortsGarage definitely genuine and for me I love the antiques roadshow aspect of going through what folks thought was trash and finding out that it’s worth money. I love hearing about where these games came from and the memories associated with it. If you don't need the money, just keep it or give it to niece and nephew so they can experience it. Once selling it, be sure enough that it will not be a regret. Rebuying old nostalgia items can be expensive. Ex. The price of Gamecube when the Wii came out drop to less than expected and people sell them to get new toys/games. And now, the price has gone through the roof. I regret selling my NES and collections for $30 to obtained SNES. Afterward, i regret selling it. 30 years later did i try to get it back but the price has gone up. Be sure not to regret once sell.

Great insights. I wonder how much younger generations will care about the old videogames though. I imagine my kids won't care too much about Dad's blurry low res n64 games too much. But who knows...
I love Jedi Power Battles. Great co-op game, and I don’t understand the mixed reception of it. It does start out harder and gets easier as you level up and get more combos. Maybe people that don’t like it just don’t play it long enough.

Speculatively, I assume that a number of factors contributed to things like 5 screws, label variants, and other niche factors contributed to it. But I'd love to find some causally reliable data. It's telling that ALL collectibles have gone a similar path the last few years, not just games.

I'm glad to be on the cheaper side of retro gaming, the one that only cares about playing on the original consoles by using Everdrives and/or Optical Drive Emulators and skip physical games altogether, so for me all this crazyness around high retro games prices is just fun to watch as a mere spectator. I wonder what will happen in a few decades when the number of people interested in retro games goes way down due to old age, and younger people just has no nostalgia for such old systems.

SUCH A GREAT question and observation. Although, the high prices in retro games is mirrored by other collectibles as well - Pokemon cards, comics, etc. This is something I plan to explore with a fair amount of depth.

The fact that people are consistently paying $20-30 for the Legend of Zelda is insane to me. I get that it's an extremely popular game but every time I go to conventions there are literally dozens of this game sitting around piled up on tables that aren't selling. Any smart person is going to know that the price of this game will eventually come down. Don't need to pay top dollar just to have it in a collection. I would rather play it as a rom on my laptop.

@@MortsGarage yeah it's a must own title for sure and when an entire generation is clamoring and competing over games it's a sellers market.
