​@@brianvillarreal677 After future trunks returns to his timeline to take care of the androids+imperfect cell he meets the supreme kai and kabito some time after, I believe he even trains with the Z Sword and defeats Dabura but unfortunately Shin dies preventing buu from hatching and therefore killing Beerus as well through their link. This is all shown in the manga. Too bad Trunks didn't have someone like Goku maybe even Gohan around to encourage something being thrown at the Z sword which then prompted Shin (and Shin still alive because he died unnecessarily imo, it was moreso they wanted Beerus out the picture so he wouldnt step in to take out Goku Black in that timeline) to materialize Kachin and break the sword thus freeing elder kai to then unlock their potential in that timeline.

​@@markmessi9020 I mean, they already kinda retconned it in Z. Vegeta didn't need to witness the death of a loved one to achieve the form, he just trained a bunch and cried. But also it's not even really a retcon. By the time he meets universe 6, goku has already mastered every ssj form, so it only makes sense that he would have figured out the exact way to trigger the transformation that didn't involve having to witness your best friend get exploded by the most powerful being in the universe (at that time.) Also it's just a really weird thing to fixate on when there's so many more things to be upset about with Super, like the inconsistant quality of the art style, or the fact that they made Goku act like a dumb child when at the end of Z he was definitely a mature intelligent adult who only lacked formal education, or the abundance of poorly written filler episodes that gave us some of the most cringe worthy shit since the Para Brothers in GT.

Rage boosts can only go so far. He never mastered SSJ1 like he did in the time chamber with Goku. Goku taught him how to master it. That's why they decided to stay super saiyan 24/7 leading up to the Cell games. They made SSJ1 Gohan's new base, so when the rage boost kicked in, it sent him to another level. Future Gohan didn't do that.

@@DreiK96 Goku is the one who figured both out. He just didn't have the raw energy at the time to get to make SSJ2 work, but Gohan did with his hidden power. So Goku guided Gohan to it. Gohan wasn't going to get there on his own.

@@DreiK96 Goku is a martial arts prodigy, but in canon has a lower potential compared to Gohan. So Goku was able to master SSJ on his own. Gohan needed guidance from Goku to master SSJ since he's not much of a martial arts prodigy as Goku. He just has more potential in power.

@@DreiK96 it mean goku know how to train and tap into the true power of certain transformation, obtain a form doesnt mean you going to master it eventually without proper way of training , like how trunk and future gohan never master SSJ1 even tho they gain and fight in the form for so long.

The hopeless of his situation got to him, no matter how angry he got he still wasn’t strong enough and it just made him sloppy, and after constant failure he became jaded and cut himself off from his emotions just so he could keep fighting a losing battle.

Wish we got an arc with more of future Gohan .

The reason is very simple and it's not got anything to do with him not having training to learn, as he achieved Super Saiyan after seeing those he loved die in front of him by the Cyborgs. From that moment on Gohan was either fighting for his life or struggling to survive, he had massive injuries repeatedly due to being overwhelmed by the pair of them. To note that his Super Saiyan 1 form was enough to kill either 17 or 18 on their own, it would've been a close battle but he was that strong by that time, but him having to contend with both made it impossible, that's why he was training Trunks as he wanted a distraction and lesser Super Saiyan to fight and keep either 17 or 18 busy while he finished the other. the only reason he died in the end was because Trunks wasn't capable of controlling Super Saiyan at that time and nearly died from the Cyborgs attack. If Gohan had been alone it would've been a rinse and repeat of Gohan getting a minor Zenkai boost from nearly dying, eating a Sensu Bean and getting stronger. If we're going down this road, eventually he'd have reached perfected Super Saiyan 1 and decimated the both of them

Cyborgs (not android) 17 and 18, during the last fight against Gohan, said that they used about half their power in their previous battles, so no Gohan at that time wasnt strong to defeat them

I believe master roshi had a hand in gohan training and discipline to a degree, we can say what you want, but gohan had a happy, go lucky demeanor when he wasn’t fighting and I don’t think he was putting on a front simply for trunks, that was genuine joy in a bleak environment much how Goku was during turtle training

In the manga that the The History of Trunks special is based upon (as it isn't one of the theatrical films & is based upon manga canon material), Future Trunks already has access to Super Saiyan while Future Gohan is still alive, however he lacks Gohan's experience & since Future Trunks' Super Saiyan form is unmastered, he is more prone to being overcome by his emotions clouding his judgment (Future Gohan by comparison has been fighting the Androids for years & has likely learned how to keep his emotions in check similar to Goku during the latter parts of his battle with Frieza (despite being a Super Saiyan, Goku was willing to let Frieza live once he started running out of steam due to the strain of his 100% Final Form, and showed Frieza mercy when he begged for it after injuring himself with his own technique, & even the Angry Kamehameha didn't finish Frieza off as Goku admitted to Future Trunks that he had been too soft on Frieza)! Future Gohan was able to keep his instincts in check, though his greatest weakness was he he had the same protectivness of Future Trunks, that Future Piccolo had for Future Gohan, thus put his survival over his own, believing he had the potential to surpass him due to Future Trunks being the son of Vegeta (in the manga Future Trunks' access to Super Saiyan not unlike like his main timeline counterpart) likely made Future Gohan see Future Trunks as a prodigy like Vegeta! Future Gohan like his main timeline counterpart before the Cell Games also sincerely underestimated his own latent potential (presumably due to Guru unlocking it on Namek) & never suspecting there were levels beyond Super Saiyan (thus focused on simply getting stronger through training, rather than trying to push beyond the Super Saiyan barrier to become an Ascended Super Saiyan (aka Super Saiyan 2 which apparently requires mastering the base Super Saiyan form to achieve Super Saiyan Full Power which gets rid of the restless feeling, conserves ki, & effectively treats the form as no different from their base form, thus they can stay transformed even while at rest! XENOVERSE 2's Unknown History Saga suggests that if Super Saiyan Future Trunks had been around when he faced the Androids, its possible Gohan might have been able to tap into his latent potential as his berserker rages were often triggered by seeing his loved ones in danger, though it might have cost Future Trunks his life as he teams up with a alternate version of Future Trunks' older Time Patroller counterpart (apparently created by the Distorted Time Eggs due to Time Patrol Trunks' desire to save his beloved mentor) who appeared due to Chronoa electing to allow the alterations that allowed him to save Future Gohan from Mira, with Future Gohan choosing to go to his death knowing Future Trunks would ultimately succeed where he failed! Ultimately I believe the presence of the former Time Patrol Trunks, allowed Future Gohan to tap into his latent potential due to his desire to protect his student, as well as the hope that TP Trunks' presence represented, allowing him to ultimately allow the pair to overcome the Androids to bring peace to their world, even if this alternate TP TRUNKS had to sacrifice his principles as a Time Patroller chosing to remain in said new timeline he created through once again altering history (albeit this time with the help of the Distorted Time Eggs which altered TP Trunks' actions so he chose to save Future Gohan rather than let history play out like it should (fortunately it was a naturally occurring time distortion & was caused by Chronoa's neglecting to restore the unaltered timeline as she kept in TP Future Trunks meeting Future Gohan before his death (resulting in Future Gohan's I Will Never Die speech to the Androids from the TV Special, which was not originally present in the unaltered timeline that Future Trunks views shortly before said timeline is altered! The young Teen Future Trunks was too inexperienced for Future Gohan to go all out against & Future Gohan was mostly self taught after the deaths of the other Z Fighters! However if Chronoa allowed the Unknown History Saga version of Future Trunks' timeline to remain (the alterations were partially her fault for not reverting the scroll to its unaltered state once history was corrected as she left in Future Gohan fighting Future Android 16, & Mira alongside the Time Patrol as he knowingly when to his death having figured out that his death meant something thanks to TP Trunks' insistence he join him in confronting the Androids, convincing him he was okay knowing Future Trunks could finally bring peace one day, hence his speech to the Androids about another warrior taking his place! If said altered Future timeline was allowed to remain (its fate is left ambiguous regardless of the player's input regarding the matter)! Presumably TP Trunks would help his younger counterpart & Future Gohan achieve mastery of the Super Saiyan form, putting Future Gohan closer to achieving Super Saiyan 2 & possibly beyond (as he probably would have joined the two Future Trunks' in training on the Sacred World of the Kais with TP Trunks knowing to free Future Elder Kai from the Z Sword, allowing Future Gohan the opportunity to have his Potential Unleashed to become Ultimate Future Gohan, thus making him more than a match for Future Babidi & Future Dabura)! Future Gohan might also get the opportunity to train with Future Goku as The Sacred World of the Kais is located within the heavenly realm of Other World thus deceased fighters can exist their no problem (Future Goku has Instant Transmission & could probably bring along Future Piccolo & the others for a brief reunion, with the possibility of maybe Future Vegeta being released from HELL with either a good word to King Yemma from Future Shin, Future Goku, and/or Future King Kai if he hasn't already given some benefits of dying heroically fighting the Androids)!

There is a really cool fan made manga about gohan unlocking ssj2. A little girl and a mom were at a park. The little girl had a balloon, but it slipped away. Gohan was passing by and helped the little girl. She got really fond of gohan because he reminded her of her older brother that was killed, and so gohan became really good friends with the girl untill the andriods came and killed of everyone while gohan was absent. Gohan got there, but it was too late since everyone died, BUT the little girl. She survived, but as she cried for her mom She got killed in front of gohan. Thus, pushing him past ssj into ssj2,he destroyed both andriods but at a cost. Its a great fan made sad but great. Found it. its called Dragon Ball- gohan x trunks after by Young Jijii there are 4 chaps i highly recommended it. His art its top tier

The fact that the real dragon ball time line , is the one where the androids destroyed everything and the one we are watching got separated from the original one because trunks went back to the past to avoid all of this

I just remembered when trunks said "In the future everyone will die except for gohan" somehow, I didnt think that was about future gohan.

Another reason is because no one was at a level like Gohan for him to train with. For example when teen Gohan and goku trained they were able to reach above grade 2 super sayin (basically the buff form vegeta and trunks used) but achieved grade 3 (When Gohan and Goku staying in super sayin without needing to charge up for it) Even in dbs whis states that sayins training together furthers their hints why vegeta always trains with goku. In all of this if Gohan had more time with trunks. He could've easily gotten super sayin 2

I’m afraid you don’t understand super sayian 2 works friend, SSj2 can only by achieved when one defines and refines their body, mind and soul in order to take on a long-standing task, thus breaking their mental barriers to the transformation(Gohan being inspired by 16 to be a protector of the world taking priority over his ingrained pacifistic beliefs and Future Trunks assuming responsibility of being the universe's sole protector after the Supreme Kai's death during the battle against Babitty and Dabuara (as seen in the game Kakkarot, which is canon cause future Trunks mentions the event in DBS)

@@kanewilson8624 Pretty sure he just has to get angry and break down the walls he set up for himself due to his dislike of fighting. Gohan didn't go super saiyan 2 in Trunk's timeline because had he done so the story would have been over before it even began. It makes no sense for Gohan to have been fighting for so long and not have surpassed the androids in adulthood. There is no effort to explain this for the same reason why there's no explanation as to why the characters didn't have the location of New Namek. It's because it is simply an inconvenience so it is ignored. There is no deep reason for their transformations. They transformed because the plot demaned it.

This just makes it even more impressive that goku figured out there were levels above ssj. We all get caught up by what a prodigy gohan is but forget that goku had to figure out shit from scratch and gohan wouldn't have reached such high potential without him

Kinda difficult to put some serious training when increasing your power level would alert the androids of your location. His best method of training would be fighting the androids and improving every time, but that would be too risky.

It would happen naturally. After all those yrs of fighting, he would easily get stronger. He is also a saiyan, so he would get a boost every time he lost a fight with them. Androids can't increase their power level, so there really isn't a reason he couldn't win.

Gohan needs others to guide or motivate him to the next level. Gohan is the perfect example of talent and potential, it must be cultivated. Most people with talent never reach their full potential do to manipulation and security. Being naturally good at something takes away the urgency to excel at it.

I love how trunks comes from the future to discover something in the past that was never discovered in the future.

Technically, we got it wrong with transformations...Super Saiyan 2 is actually Grade 5 Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 3 is actually Super Saiyan 2. In Super Vegeta's God Transformations share this pattern...Vegeta (Base), Vegeta, SSGSS Vegeta and SSGSS (Evolved) Vegeta

Master roshi was still around. He could have trained with him. There's a shit lot roshi knows that could greatly assist Gohan. Gohan biggest restriction is that he was holding himself back. He put his dad on a pedestal and rarely finds his own strength. Future Gohan needed to let go of his grief. His losses. And embrace them. But he never did and because of it, he never got stronger.

i feel like it was because he was constantly stressed and exhausted from battling the androids for years. I feel that’s what held him back from constant growth. He had a need, but his body couldn’t handle the constant battles.

This man gave it all. He was a true sayian warrior.

It was Goku who suggested there was a level above super saiyan. Future Gohan thought super saiyan was the pinnacle. So he didn't even attempt it. By the looks of it he didn't even continue training on his own thinking super saiyan was the extent of his potential.

Little did he know he just needed to find that tingle in his back

Goku was the main reason why Gohan achieved SSJ2. He was the first to realise that the ascended Super-Saiyan form wasn’t enough, especially Trunks bulky version, so he proposed they remained in their Super-Saiyan state 24/7 in the hyperbolic time chamber until it felt like their base form. This no doubt pushed Gohan already close to the edge of SSJ2. After that he only needed that classic emotional explosion to unleash the new form. Future Gohan never had any of that guidance and training but was in a survival mode for most of his existence though he managed to squeeze out the Super Saiyan form on his own, it wasn’t enough, but one thing is for sure if the androids had killed Future Trunks in front of him something would have snapped and SSJ2 might have still been a reality.

@@TheAlone-xc6dg that was the trigger but your base level or predecessor form needs to be close to the new form to achieve it. This is why Goku didn’t turn into SSJ2 after Frieza killed Krillin on Namek or why Gohan didn’t leapfrog to SSJ3 after Cell killed 16 and tortured the rest of the Z fighters. Future Gohan’s Super Saiyan form was stronger than those of Goku and Vegeta (neither would be able to take on 18 or 17 individually but Future Gohan could, which is why they ganged up on him) but in the future timeline he lacked a trigger to push him to the next level. That sort of visionary thinking about power and progress has always been Goku’s strongest feature and why he always keeps breaking his limit but unfortunately Future Gohan was too young to pick up this characteristic of his father before the disease killed him.

@@TheAlone-xc6dg yeah because its an ancient Saiyan mythology, and Goku was raised on Earth so it didn’t mean anything to him at the time compared to what it meant to Vegeta. However their multiple battles on Namek raised the power-levels of both Goku and Vegeta to such an extent that they became the first Saiyans to defeat the Ginyu Force and the first to force Frieza to transform. The killing of Krillin was the trigger that pushed Goku to a new level and allowed him to transform to SSJ. Similarly Vegeta also had reach the necessary level to transform after he was revived on Namek but he lacked a sufficient emotional trigger. If Frieza had not killed Krillin its very unlikely that Goku would have prevailed on Namek.

There’s a line in the movie that explains exactly why Gohan didn’t get stronger. He said this to Trunks when explaining how he went Super Saiyan: “For me it’s simple. All I had to do is think of the androids killing Piccolo and Krillin. Then I feel a horrible hurt, and the pain from that turns into rage, it’s maddening! I don’t ever want that to happen again, something that unfair. And then suddenly, the dam breaks.” Gohan admitted he was intentionally holding back and controlling his anger in hopes of not snapping, the exact thing Gohan was doing against Cell before #16 convinced him to let go. That’s why SSJ2 Gohan is so poetic when comparing him to Future Gohan.

what?, no. the "I dont ever want that to happen again, something that unfair" is referring entirely to the moment that caused his rage to begin with, the loss of his friends. why would Gohan be actively holding back to not snap when he's actively trying to teach trunks how to do it. Gohan is saying the super saiyan power responds to the rage from losing someone, and the desire to never lose someone again resulting in power.

I think gohan became such a good master/trainer that he went into the androids fight knowing he would loose but also knowing that would trigger future trunks full potential and therefore falling as a fighter but succeeding as a teacher.

when you think about it... future Gohan reaching super saiyan was already a miracle. At the time, Goku had been the only super saiyan and had numerous mentors that helped get him there. The idea of a half saiyan also becoming the saiyan legend? Future trunks doesn't learn it without future gohan, and present vegeta/gohan don't strive for it without future trunks showinng them there could be more than one

I wish Future Gohan was around, him and Trunks with Goku and Vegeta OOFFF. And it’ll be cool to see Future Gohan meet Present Gohan and Goten and Chichi

Future Gohan was stronger than a single android but couldn’t take on 2 at once. He was the last Z fighter left and had lost everyone. He had no idea there was another level. His sacrifice paved the way for Trunks to become what he is.

Gohan basically had so much self doubt because Goku was not there to train him and everyone close to him dying didn't help the case either , when Android 16 actually cleared his doubts of himself he finally turned super saiyan 2.

It's like damn if you really think about his whole story arc it's been a pretty wild one from getting kidnapped by his own uncle to following the future timeline where he literally gets killed

It’s like he forgot the Lookout was up there. Goku forgot how to communicate from the dead. King Kai just disappeared. Bulma builds spaceships, go to Namek and use the dragon balls. It’s weird how that was the only storyline that death was more than a minor setback.

FGohan story is the most human story of them all.

I enjoyed the explanation posited by Carthu’s Dojo - In a hopeless crisis situation, Gohan was trying to live up to Goku’s image. Which makes sense, it’s what he believed the world needed and it’s the man who had saved the earth in prior situations. However, it never allowed him to hit that potential for exactly that reason. He was trying to be his father, rather than discovering himself. Only a mentor could’ve put him on that track.

I wonder though wasn't popo still alive and why the hell didn't he tell them about the time chamber? At the very least I'm sure Korin knew about it. The future story is all good and all and did wonders for the Dragon Ball story but they have a lot of potholes in it cuz there were several people that would have been able to offer aid to Gohan and trunks, such as Korin, Popo, and Baba. They all knew about the time chamber, not to mention the nameks. Mory would've reached out to help Gohan for all that gohan did for the nameks, and weve already witnessed that mory's senses were in tuned with whats going on in the earth.

One major factor was that future Gohan never trained in the hyperbolic time chamber. Without that training Gohan would never have been able to unleash his true potential.

Because Toriyama has bosses that he doesn’t stand up to and he allowed them to bully him into sidelining Gohan to make Dragon Ball into the “Goku & Vegeta Show (with Guest Star Piccolo)”. It’s also because he has an irrational hatred for Chi Chi, so he made her into a stereotypical screaming housewife who bullied her son into becoming a scholar rather than, you know, defending the literal universe full of innocent people that they live in.

I like to think he did, but couldn't hold it. Like when he was a kid and his energy would surge from his anger and then vanished and couldn't remember what happened.

This would be so much better if the AI voice pronounced Gohan's name correctly

Well, in Super we find that Future Trunks reaches SSJ2 after training from the Supreme Kai. In DBZ, Gohan achieved it following training from Goku who also trained under King Kai. So SSJ2 does have a prerequisite other than rage. There has to be some baseline conditioning and ki stability that Goku's method in the time chamber struck upon.

Future Gohan is a beast, he reminds me of Guts from Berserk

If the garlic Junior sage was canon, then Gohan would’ve actually known about the hyperbolic time chamber from fighting on kami’s lookout. It would’ve been good writing if gohan asked kami to train him in a similar way of his father, while still being trained with piccolo, hell maybe kami and piccolo 2v1 gohan into an awakened state.

The real reason is Gohan isn't a genius at pushing his limits like Goku or Vegeta . Which is why he had someone else unlocked his potential twice .
