Much like Peter Pan, HoND already has a bunch of live-action adaptions: in this case, long-predating this 1990s-era Disney movie. If DISNEY is stupid enough to attempt a live-action adaption of this animated adaption, it will fail even harder than MULAN 2020 did. Especially since Tony Jay has passed (RIP), so there isn't an actor that could hard-carry the live-action movie on his back the way an elderly-but-still-alive Jay could've. (Nor could Christopher "Count Dooku/Saruman" Lee -- the only other fellow who might been able to pull of Disney's iteration on Frollo...b/c Lee is also deceased.)

And many of those real people, like Frollo, are judges.

As someone with Christian beliefs, Frollo is a prime example of how far you can take said beliefs in the most dangerous ways possible. And like you said, what makes him scarier than the other Disney villains is that he’s human; lacking no supernatural abilities, but the one thing he has is the iron grip of his actions.

Christian as well but I take it more as an example of why church and state must never be mixed. There is a lot of temptation with just the power inherent in being a shepherd to the congregation. Adding temporal power on top of that is just to dangerous.

Indeed, Frollo just does sinful and horrendous things and is too prideful to acknowledge this and change. God says to love and EMBRACE the sinner, only then can they be turned to God, by shunning the sinner as Frollo does we do not grow God’s kingdom, we do not save more people before the end eventually comes. Frollo would have murdered baby Quasi if not for the priest being honest about Frollo’s sins. The priest actually helps the “wretches” like gypsies. That is how we should act, not like Frollo.

FR. Honestly I feel Mother Gothel is very similar to Frollo in mindset, considering she treats Rapunzel the exact same way. Only she’s purely obsessed with her beauty and uses Raps. In comparison to Queen Grimhelda from Snow White, she uses witchcraft to get her own way, but I dig Frollo and Gothel don’t have powers but instead fear, manipulation and narcissism to achieve their goals, not realizing they’re destroying themselves unless they change

@@kristinahuchison2511 Overall, Tangled is a very similar movie to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. We have an interesting young person locked in a high place (Quasimodo - Rapunzel), who is raised by an "adoptive" parent, main villain (Frollo - Gothel). This parent instills in child a fear of the world so that he/she does not leave his/her place. One day, however, this person breaks the rules, meets his/her love (Esmeralda - Flynn), whom the main villain wants to kill. The protagonist saves the object of love. We also have a funny white horse (Achilles - Maximus) and music by Alan Menken.

To follow up: I mean this for people who use religion like Frollo, as an ends to a means or as a tool for exerting unjust power or control or tyranny under the guise of faith.

Frollo is the perfect example of a religious fanatic, who will use religion and God as an excuse for doing terrible deeds, He literally has to lower others and make them look horrible so he can look like the holiest of them all

And he never used religion to justify what he does, again only during hellfire. Throughout the whole movie he does what HE wants, not what he thinks God wants. I personally used to be friends with a devout Christian. He defended murderers and rapists and scammers (including idiots he introduced me to who threatened and stole money from me) but when I spoke my mind about certain countries governments for the atrocities they committed, he immediately stopped speaking to me. Hypocrisy at its finest. I do not think selling heroine, stabbing people, stealing or beating up women are considered 'men of god' they are servants of the devil and should be treated as such.

It’s a shame we can never get quality villains like this from Disney anymore

Frollo is the perfect villain because he is an opposite to the main character, Quasi sees Esmeralda as a love interest but even if she can't be with him he wants to still be friends, Frollo on the otherhand sees Esmeralda as his "personal plaything" and is powered by lust and greed, he has the "If I can't have her , no one can" mentality. He is also one of the scariest because he is suposed to be a judge/minister, meaning he is supposed to bring justice, and should be someone to resolve problems and not make them worse but he would rather burn the city he was sworn to protect rather than see "The gypsy girl" be set free. He even had a chance to redeem himself but chose not too. This shows how much of a monster he is. Even the guardsman (forgot his name) could habe easily been an antagonist but he still saw the purity in Quasimodo even when others did not and ended up saving both him and Esmeralda in the climax of the movie.

Phoebus, and he’s a captain. Yes, he was never prejudicial against her people, and that’s why she falls for him is because he intervened several times to protect her people. But ultimately sees them like the Parisians, just regular folks trying to live their lives.

In the book Phoebus was also terrible.

According to producer Don Hann, Frollo was inspired by Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of Amon Göth, a real-life Nazi SS officer that served as the main antagonist in Schindler's List. I can see the similarities. Both are monsters in human flesh who want to rid the world of people they see as "inferior" (or "sin" in Frollo's case), and yet they end up lusting after a member of the very same people they want erased from existence, Helen Hirsch (Amon's Polish maid) and the Romani/Gypsy Esmeralda respectively. I wish Disney would make more villains like Frollo. He's such a terrifying antagonist because, despite his lack of supernatural powers and magic, he's still a human capable of committing atrocities and has many similarities to real people like Amon and other fanatics, people that use religion and God as an excuse to justify their hatred of what they deem to be "sin", all while ignoring that they themselves are the monsters that they project onto others.

you're aware that the film is based on a book right ? "Notre Dame de Paris", written by Victor Hugo in 1831, in which Frollo is even worst than in the film ! He even kill Esmeralda by the end. Quasimodo is probably based on a hunchbacked stonecutter who worked at Notre-Dame in the 1820's, nicknamed "The Hunchbacked". Hugo and him even lived in the same place for a time.

Yeah, I forgot Esmerelda died. Though, Frollo in the film was also inspired by Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of that SS German officer.

"everything he does is understandable but not excusable" THIS is such a beautiful line as it can apply to EVERYONE.

A long list of reasons why Frollo is my favorite Disney character (that I can think of): . His voice (pure ASMR; RIP Tony Jay). It’s like Frank Welker as Megatron or Mark Hamill as the Joker you literally cannot imagine anyone else voicing him because he was just that amazing . His song (not my most favorite Disney song but do I really need to explain?) . His giant silly hat (a nightmare for the animators) . His horse (who is named Snowball by the animators probably as revenge XD) . His sense of humor that you don’t expect him to have (as well as his demonic laugh when he thinks he has Esmeralda) . His perseverance (which can also be his weakness but yeah) . His “😐” face right before the angry face he makes that’s the thumbnail of this video . His existence taught me as a kid that not all elderly people are sweethearts-or “frail” (along with Carl from Up) because let’s face it he was in hella good shape for his age (must be from going up the cathedral stairs everyday) . His descent into madness was genuinely cathartic for me (and pretty similar to another villain I like-Azula-since they both become insane when they start to lose their control over others) . He was pretty much my first CCD teacher in regards to what NOT to do as a Catholic . Furthermore, he’s realistic (since there are plenty of malignant narcissists out there, religious or not) . His huge amount of screen time for a Disney Villain (13 minutes!!!!!) . He has no problem with literally getting his hands dirty/taking matters into his own hands (like Christ he crushed some ants with his bare fingers, set a house on fire with a child and baby inside, and went totally ax-crazy at the climax) . He had power but actually knew how to maintain it (sorry Scar) . Now, despite having so much power over Paris akin to a king, he is still a very diligent person. For all his complaining, he still goes to the festival (and so that diligence backfires on him) 😂 . His creepy smile rivals that of the Joker (wait, it’s the Middle Ages/Renaissance. WHY ARE HIS TEETH SO WHITE AND NICE???) Update: Below comment explained that. Thank you. . He’s able to stand right up again after falling off his horse (which can kill or seriously injure you especially at his age) . Crazy, foolish and evil as he is, Frollo never got upset at his horse for getting startled by Esmeralda (and keep in mind he didn’t know that it was her that caused it). C’mon, I bet we all didn’t expect him to yell “And don’t hit my horse!”. Granted, that purebred Friesian probably costed a lot. . He’s strong enough to cut a gargoyle off of the cathedral with his sword (although idk how old that thing was), break all of Quasimodo’s wooden stuff, and hold onto his cape while hanging off the cathedral (seriously why does he have better upper arm strength than me) . He’s unapologetic and delusional to the point of it being entertaining . He’s able to creep out Phoebus (a war veteran) with ease . If he were with other Disney Villains, he’d genuinely be confused as to why he’s considered a Villain . He’ll always find a reason to hate you, and that’s another form of dedication from him . All of the ironies about his character . He was right about a FEW things (“The world is cruel.”) . Throughout the movie, he experiences several comeuppances (or warnings) before his ultimate demise, with the most obvious being having to raise Quasimodo. In other words, he doesn’t always get away with stuff and that fuels our satisfaction with him receiving his daily dose of karma. These moments (like falling off of Snowball) are like appetizers before the main course . He doesn’t need an intricate emotional backstory or whatever in order to be a compelling Villain. He’s a medieval zealot who let power get into his head. That’s it. It’s why people love Jack Horner from Puss in Boots.

@@IronycheinPain I didn’t even mention his FAST reaction time (when his guards accidentally almost took his head off with a pole at the festival) or how good his hearing his (remember when he said “Nor would I!” in response to Phoebus even though he was all the way across the Court of Miracles??????). This guy was was a force to be reckoned with and might actually be able to kick Phoebus’ ass, or at least put up a hell of a fight (remember, Esmeralda brought him down in one pull, but she could definitely kick Frollo’s ass if they were both completely alone).

Because Disney is too woke and is too “kid friendly” legit notice that the Disney princes/male protagonists don’t show skin anymore after David from Lilo and Stitch I believe, when the Renaissance era had no qualms letting dudes like Aladdin, John Smith, Tarzan and Shang showing shirtless scenes. I’m getting sick of the stupid “tragic villain” or victimizing the villain trope going on. Some people are just bad and don’t need an explanation to why they act that way. Honestly Disney has devolved and Walt is rolling in his grave about how greedy it has become. Some of his most famous projects like Sleeping Beauty were duds at the time. And now it has become nothing more than a capitalist giant that is milking franchises like Frozen and Toy Story purely to make up for how awful and hated their latest projects have been

​@@kristinahuchison2511Also I wouldn't call Disney all kid-friendly. Encanto deals with some heavy themes, that many struggle with and have trauma from. Yes, Abuela is that sympathetic antagonist that you're complaining of, but I think she was done alright, and can be expanded on in a series, like they did with Tangled. It's okay to admit that adults who hurt their families have been through crap themselves and are damaged. Abuela had to realize that and learn from it, and it's implied and briefly shown she does. Having no empathy at all for humans who can hurt you isn't gonna change them. And in Turning Red, sure it was more Pixar, but that one also deals with it, and even talks about puberty, showing the messiness of emotions, the struggle of responsibilites and not just that girls will grow up and be "babymaking machines".

It's honestly scary to think about people like Frollo exist in the real world. You'd never see a dark fairy with powers to curse people to sleep eternally in reality, you'd never see a sea witch who makes shady deals with merpeople in reality, you'd never see a sorcerer with the powers of a genie in reality, but you certainly can see people in reality who are like Frollo who are entirely self righteous, thinking they're the only one who's perfect aside from others, and using religion and God to justify atrocious actions. But that's exactly what makes him one of the best Disney villains and the scariest

absolutely right... however unlike him, in reality many of them manage to escape justice, manipulate the law and sometimes also make the victim look bad in the story. But in the end, like Frollo they end up in hell, where they can no longer manipulate anyone.

I see alot of similarity between Frollo and Rameses in Prince of Egypt, although where Frollo is truly irredeemable Rameses is more of a tragic figure who gradually devolves into his father to the point where he's finally ready to finish the genocide his father had started only this time having them be legitimately scapegoated for the Plagues and the death of the first born sons rather than it just being a precautionary measure. There's also The Plagues song vs. Heaven's Light/Hellfire where both the protagonist and antagonist are singing about the same thing but from different perspective where Rameses its just about stubborness and Frollo its about lust, but in both cases pride and racism figure into their reasoning. There's WAY more similarities I could go into between those two movies but that's for another post and I don't have that much time in a day lol

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is my Disney animation (not The Lion King or Frozen), and The Prince of Egypt is my favorite DreamWorks animation (not Shrek or Madagascar). Reason? Both adapt adult material for children's cinema, but at the same time they are still family films. Overzealous parents complain that these aren't movies for kids, but that's bullshit. These two animations simply do not treat the child viewer like an idiot. Of course, children should know in an appropriate way that the world can be cruel, etc. and both of these animations still show that good wins.

@@saskia3691 Oh, the Lion King is quite an eloquent testament of how cruel the world is. Simba's arc and dilemma, certain he is responsible for his father's death, feeling all the more guilty that he spent his childhood wishing to be king, was really moving. Same for Frozen, where Elsa is also plagued by the guilt of hurting people by merely existing. But Prince of Egypt develops the relationship between the protagonist and the deuteragonist/antagonist that tears the viewer apart, since both of them are so relatable. Both of them love each other but are chained to their respective duties, and it ends up destroying both parties.

@@madeleinedartois4689 I love The Lion King, it's my third favorite movie (my top 3 rankings are The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan and The Lion King). Frozen is overrated for me. Sure, the character of Elsa is identifiable even for me, because I have neurosis and I never know when I will explode, but Hans as a villain is a joke.

My favorite villain because he's human. He doesn't need magic to do terrible things, and at the same time he is one of the few villains of that era who can have a conscience and a sense of guilt. He murders people because he believes he is doing it for the "greater good". But he also has his weaknesses and desires. This villain represents the people we may meet on our way. Each of us can fall victim to a parent who humiliates us. Each of us can fall victim to a judge who gives an unjust verdict. Any of us can be harassed. Each of us can be a victim of discrimination. But even more interesting, unfortunately, is that even we ourselves can easily become someone like him.

The only monsters in this world are human monsters.

Frollo is proof that a villain can be pure evil and complex at the same time. Those terms are seen as mutually exclusive or even incompatible, but that’s not always the case. It can be done, but it is very hard to pull off. Further proof of this movie’s genius.

My grandma loved this movie because of how it portrayed how some twist religion to fit their own sick thoughts. She also said how Quasimodo was one of the most beautiful Disney characters she has seen because he is very selfless and has lots of insight despite how frolo raised. Him and how kind he was to Esmeralda despite what he was taught about gypsys. She then said Gaston was the ugliest character she has ever seen because to him belle is a trophy and how full of himself he is. When I was 8 i got to go to notredam and see the cathedral and courtyard and it surprised me how accurate in terms of detail Disney was when animating it. Frolo low-key is my favorite villain because he doesn't lie about how evil he is he is just true to himself and his beliefs.

?? Your last sentence makes no sense, Frollo is a unique disney villain precisely because he's the only disney villain who lies to himself about how evil he is. The other disney villains know how evil they are and they dont care, however Frollo has convinced himself that he's a good and pure man. @@FirstnameLastname-zq8oy the last bit of the comment was more about how looks can be decieving. here looks are deciveing because the movie uses religion as a main focal point and how religion can seem nice but can hide some evils. this whole movie though clearly shows how some religious people use religion for their own gain and how some use it to justify their actions. frolo saw himself as a holy man and a man of god so in his eyes he can do no wrong because he is an arch bishop (i think thats how its spelled) and in his eyes is closer to god than everyone else in the movie. he was not a hypocrite so much as he saw himself as someone who has the power to cleanse the world from people who are seen as lesser in his eyes. he twisted catholisism to suit his own needs.

Frollo is the darkest & rarest villain. Villains like Scar, Gaston & Mother Gothel only had parts of Frollo in them. Other Disney villains know what they do is wrong. Frollo believed everything he did was right

I would argue Governor Ratcliffe from Pocahontas. I know he’s definitely one of the worst villains unfortunately, as I personally love the movie. But Ratcliffe truly believed Pocahontas’s people were nothing but bloodthirsty barbarians who needed to be exterminated. Like he showed absolutely no remorse for accidentally shooting John Smith either because “He stepped into it” and even threatened to hang all of his men when they arrested him. Even in the sequel when Pocahontas is forced to confront him multiple times, he absolutely despises her simply because she’s a native, even as a civilized lady he even sneers at her for so quickly moving on from John Smith. He refused to admit the natives weren’t what he thought, and saw them as rodents and vermin. Like even when the king arrested him in the end, he was trying to convince him he was making a mistake by trusting and respecting Pocahontas’s wishes. John was willing to accept he was the savage one and learn from his mistakes, while Ratcliffe stubbornly refused.

He saw them all as not only threats to him, but as threats to all of Paris. Ratcliffe was racist like Frollo, but unlike Ratcliffe, Frollo committed genocide by burning people alive & tried to burn Esmeralda as well

Definitely one of my favorite Disney villains. Powerful, vulnerable, and most importantly: memorable.

The moment before Frollo dies when he stares at the gargoyle and it roars at him, it’s almost as if God himself is judging him for his actions and showing him his soul. When Frollo screams before he falls, it is from fear but a fear of what he has become. He has seen himself for what he is and he is truly scared of what he’s done. But it’s too late for repentance. He has sealed his fate.

Gargoyles were made to scare demons away. So the fact that the gargoyle “came to life” moments before frollo’s death and scared him confirmed that his soul had now become fully corrupted and was casted to Hell for his sins

As a catholic convert, I’m glad this movie shined a light on not being able to trust someone just because they claim a religious high ground. I’ve never personally encountered a single bad priest, but I’ve come across MANY Catholics, especially catholic men, who will use their faith as a rouse to make you feel safe around them so that they could take advantage of the situation. Many people pretending to be holy to excuse things. We’re all hypocrites, but there are a lot of bad people who are trying to hide it with religion. Everyone is a sinner, but like we say “through my fault, through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault” it’s whether or not you can admit that that shows the most

I’m waiting for Disney to make Frollo a mis-understood anti-hero who respects Quasimodo’s wishes in the remake

Theoretically, it would be closer to the book that the animation was inspired by. In the book, Frollo is a priest and he is actually a tragic character. His parents died of illness and he was left alone with a brother. He treats Quasimodo well, has no genocidal inclinations, and it is Esmeralda's lust that corrupts him morally. Personally, it's hard for me to say which Frollo I like more, the one from the book or the one from the animation. They are both similar and different. It's kind of like wondering if I like Darth Vader or Darth Sidious more.

@@saskia3691 I'll say he is still pretty much as evil as he's in the film, just not as visibly so. He tries to abduct and rape Esmeralda, who's barely 16, frames her for murder and still calls her pitiless for not loving him. His regret after hanging her is that her legs were visible to the crowd. He shares the lack of accountability and manipulation from the film. It’s even disturbing, as we know that he is capable of compassion, but is choosing not to do it. Also given the book was written in the 1830s, a clergyman being arrogant and wanting to practice sorcery was Hugo calling him enough evil.

i really like frolo for one main reason. "villain's are not meant to be cool" you can feel sorry for them, pity them, or even enjoy watching them do their thing, but at the end of the day they are still very much evil. not because they want to be [in most cases] but because they have a goal or plan that others wouldn't agree with. far to often i see people online thinking "having evil powers" or "being a villian would be cool", it's not its ostracizing and people don't tend to want to hang around people who are abusive, manipulative, or display some sort of evil trait. villainy isn't cool and tends to lead into your own death. villain's don't win because evil never prospers. They either get redeemed [in which case they aren't villain's any more] or they die a horrible death often by their own making [like clayton's hanging or frolo drop into hell]. and i really appreciate that they tried to make a villian that you can see what he's doing and even have people who identify with it, but is still horrible. like their are ACTUALLY people like that in the real world one of them started ww2 and ended his own life like the villain/fascist he was.

Personally I’m okay with cool villains but I agree that this wave of people idolizing them is ridiculous, If you find characters like the Joker to be the heroes than you seriously need help The only villains I can genuinely root for are anti-villains which are pretty much just like the good guys but fighting for a different cause

Fun Fact!! The actual reason for why Frollo is seen without his hat at the final scenes of the movie, according to his lead animator, because the shape of his hat was frustrating to keep track of! In an interview it was said that the animation team was searching for ways to get rid of it at some point, and when they finally managed to there was a HUGE relief within the team. "Finally that stupid hat is gone!" 🤣🤣🤣

Frollo is also my favorite Disney Villain. I used to be Mormon when I was little. Not all of them are bad, but there were corrupted members of my church who would force their beliefs onto others. My older brother, who was only 16, was manipulated into believing he was an alcoholic and a troubled teen, even though he never touched alcohol in his life during that time. Not to mention, he was also on the autism spectrum. Years later, we’ve heard news that one of the members of our church was arrested for stealing people’s property. I guess that’s why I can relate to this movie

“Improper” As if the scene of Frollo groping Esme in the church was proper 😂 They had some weird reasoning. I would’ve loved to see Esme kill Frollo herself, even as a deleted scene. I like the ending they chose for its irony, but an extra scene with their scrapped idea would’ve been awesome.

esmeralda also dies in the original novel. she is hanged after she finally met her birth mother from which she was taken away as a baby by the romani people.

17:50 I also love how in this part of the scene, the sheer force of Quasi pulling against his chains causes the bells to all vibrate, and to me it sounds like a war cry from the very church itself. The church is cheering on Quasi for fighting against Frollo, who has corrupted and twisted everything good about the church that the bells sing for. The building itself is rebelling against Frollo. Ugh this entire movie is a masterpiece and I love it 😭💜

Just like everyone said no Disney will ever before or will ever again make a other villain one like him.

When you said Frollo would kill the other villains my jaw dropped. You are so right. Probably the only villain that would survive around him would be Gaston because he tried to kill someone supernatural. Gaston is someone who wants to get ahead like Frollo but would possibly see how messed up Frollo is and not morn his death, may even try to have him put away for old age or kill him discreetly. That is if Frollo didn’t kill him first. It’s like a twisted Master and Apprentice relationship. It’s also fitting they’re both from France so they could cross paths theoretically.

Personally I find the Hunchback of Notre Dame a very underrated Disney movie, considering its Disney’s most dark and mature film. I adore Esmerelda and really wish she was a Disney princess because she is a lot better than ones like Aurora who literally don’t do anything except sleep and get rescued in their movie. I honestly think this movie has one of the best soundtracks ever, minus that cringy love song Guy Like You, because of how powerful songs like Bells of Notre Dame are. I really dig how Heaven’s Light and Hellfire are technically the same song, but more like twins, they’re complete opposites contrasting how Quasi and Frollo see Esmerelda, and ultimately why Esmerelda falls for Phoebus instead, he sees and treats her as a normal person, not a divine angel or a sexy witch. Anyways, you perfectly described how deep and corrupt Frollo’s actions are, and I dig the worst part of it is he’s literally using God as a shield or excuse for his crimes, which is sadly real for cases like Charles Manson cult. They take God’s teachings and twist it into what they want, which is exactly why the apostle Paul warns in several books about false teachers or prophets. Like any sanity Frollo had left snapped like a toothpick when he couldn’t stop thinking of Esmerelda’s body, especially the part she’s dancing in the flames. That scene specifically had to be re-edited because apparently some thought she wasn’t wearing clothes, which is entirely the point of the scene. All he sees is someone he deems a devil, but cannot stop thinking about how sexy she is and you get the rest. So he chooses to only spare her if she promises to be his forever, and if not, he will send her to hell. Like the person he sees as a devil is actually an angel, while he’s the complete opposite. I actually didn’t realize the part his hat flies off in the end is where the very last bit of humanity in him has snapped as Quasi, a man he has completely hated his entire life, took the one thing he desires, making him enraged and possessed by his carnal desires that he disrespects Notre Dame itself and throws the archdeacon out of his way, proving he is basically throwing God to the side and hence sealing his fate doomed in the pit of fire. As for the last scene with the gargoyle, I get Quasi’s friends do come alive around Madeline and Jolly, but personally I felt maybe it was divine intervention and God was showing what was in his heart, a demon that destroyed himself by refusing to admit to his sins, which is something you must do in order to be saved, admit you are a sinner and repent. While Frollo views himself as a holy warrior and refuses to admit to his sins or repent, hence going to hell. It doesn’t matter if he was baptized or whatever, he did not live by the virtues of the Church, and broke every commandment and refused to admit them, instead blaming it all on God, hence he was never a child of God. Overall, its really disappointing to see how underrated Frollo and the movie is, considering how beautifully it explains more mature topics, and what can happen if you refuse to accept them. The sequel is a huge embarrassment and honestly an insult to how dark the original movie was, like the villain himself is easily one of the worst villains in animation because he is a clown in comparison to a “dark angel”

I don't know about Esmeralda falling for Phoebus because he "sees her as a normal person". I remember he very clearly was attracted to her, calling her amazing or something, after seeing her dance or move. I feel like they barely knew eachother. Quasimodo doesn't have to be Esmeralda's choice, but between him and Phoebus, I think Quasi has more charisma with her and he appreciates her kindness, her personality, first. It also feels kind of wrong, implying that Quasi wasn't strong and handsome enough. It's always the able-bodied, lean people that get love. Quasi may be the hero of the movie, but no, he can't be the one to get the girl. How will they have children?? Because obviously that's the only thing a woman can do in a relationship...

@@iclynnx You also have to look at it from this: Women do, instinctively, look for men that look strong and capable and able to pass those genetics to the next generation. Quasi, sadly, does not provide those instinctive needs though I personally would agree with you that Quasimodo is the better option of the two. Especially with how he nods, smiles, and moves on as if nothing happened at all despite his heart breaking from knowing that he will 'never get the girl'. His infatuation, also, was unrequited. She never liked him that way; she pitied him, she thought he would like to have a friend. She's the first girl he's been around. Literally puppy love.

@@BrokensoulRider Thumbs? Monkeys have thumbs. And dolphins and birds are incredibly intelligent too. Anyway, yes, we are technically animals, but you missed my point. We choose partner based on more than "man strong, man make good babies". Even monkeys can prefer a male that treats them well over one who is a brute.

Disney truly was a masterclass in Music and Storytelling from the late 80s - early 2000s! It may be controversial to say but I believe the most powerful and moving soundtracks to come from Disney’s Renaissance are Beauty and The Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, and Tarzan. The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Hercules, Mulan, and The Rescuers Down Under all had damn perfect soundtracks. But for whatever reason, to me, they didn’t pack as much of an emotional wallop as the 4 I had mentioned before… because they were more iconic, more lively and upbeat. Sadly I don’t think we’ll ever have another renaissance, at least any time soon with how things are going at Disney currently… but I can always dream of the day 2D animation is welcomed back, emotionally driving orchestral music is reimplemented, and writers/directors that just want to tell a good strong story for all audiences to enjoy gain the reins of future releases. On that day, I’d be very happy indeed.

A villain doesn't have to be relatable to have good motivation. As long as they themselves believe what they're doing is just, that's enough.

Man i miss days of Disney villians especially how dark they were Frollo is perfect example being one of best villians theres no tragic backstory he's sadist i haven't seen them topped him ever since.

I actually like his original not exactly tragic but pretty sympathetic backstory. I don't think Disney should have done him any differently because I LOVE the chase at the start it's amazing. But in the book it made Frollo much more interesting when he comes across a toddler aged Quasimodo abandoned on a bench and is going to leave him there but then he starts thinking about his little brother for whom he is the only parent for since their parent's death and he changes his mind. He takes in and raises this very visibly disabled possibly 'gypsy' child not because someone tells him to, not because he fears God but because imagining his little brother abandoned like that pains him. Frollo is shown to not only be able to empathize but also be motivated by that empathy in how he chooses to act.

he’s basically the og mother gothel, except he’s way creepier. seeing him around esmerelda in the movie revolted me and i honestly hate him, and that’s the exact reason he’s my fav disney villain by far. there are men like him and it’s horrible. love it

About the gargoyles, the hallucinations, and the inexplicable amount of molten lava. There is an in world explanation for all of this. All of these are explained because this story is being told by Clopin to kids. The gargoyles and other magical stuff is simply to make the story more interesting for the kids.

Underrated Disney Renaissance villain.

Frollo isn't a powerful sorcerer, or a demon from Hell, or a deadly alien from out of space. He's just a mortal man, but a powerful man with a fanatic view of the world and a sadistic love for torture. This makes him Disney's darkest villain to date, as well as my personal favourite

"It's not my fault! If in God's plan... He made the Devil so much stronger than man!" The only line that was so fucking hard it broke the First Commandment so cleanly

Part of what makes Frollo so horrifying to me is how sincere he is in his beliefs. He firmly believes he's totally in the right despite, deep down, knowing he's in a state of deep, mortal sin. That kind of sincerity is horrifying because it's impossible to reason against it or with it.

I feel like for all the emphasis on diversity and inclusion we now see from Disney, Hunchback pretty neatly broke down racism in such a way for kids - such as myself at the time - to understand it without being heavy-handed. Pocahontas was a dry run but was basically Disney's attempt at a white savior-style Dances With Wolves story, while the whole Romani/Gypsy thing is more complex in that the white Parisians and Romani have already been coexisting for a long time (as opposed to the "new world" thing from Pocahontas) and while most of the Parisians are mildly racist or prejudiced against them, they don't share Frollo's homicidal goal to purge them all out of existence, and the men present at the festival have no problem gladly objectifying Esmeralda when she basically does a G-rated strip tease. But you see at NO point during the film is Esmeralda ever shamed or victim blamed for being open about her sexuality, and the responsibility is not only entirely placed on Frollo, but we are made to see him project that blame onto her to rationalize his lust - which is not only reflective of how women of color have historically been objectified and blamed for being assaulted or harassed but men of color as well (Carolyn Bryant lying on Emmett Till and getting him killed to assuage her own racial insecurities comes to mind). That the actual real life genocide of the Romani people during WWII is still downplayed or ignored or minimized still speaks to that basic problem still persisting to this day, e.g. Jimmy Carr "joking" that the only positive of the Holocaust was that "Gypsies" were killed during it and getting off scot free...

I think Pocahontas and Hunchback handled both topics of racism very well, though from different perspectives: as you mentioned, the former discusses initial colonialism whereas the latter already depicts racial integration and coexistance. I feel like everyone overlooks the heavy lifting Pocahontas did to prevent an all-out war in the film, and John only jumped in front of the shot so the writers had a reason that they couldn't be together.

@@OpticalSorcerer Both Pocahontas and Hunchback have one thing in common, they were both green Lite by Jeffrey Katzenberg who at the time wanted to win some awards. Jeffrey even stated that he wanted Pocahontas to win best Picture😅😅😅😅. Unlike Pocahontas, Jeffrey wasn't involved in the making of Hunchback. There were plans of removing Hellfire for how dark it was, but thanks to the animators making flaming Esmeralda more clothed, so the song stayed.

The film would've been one of Dosney's greatest if it had been an epic fantasy piece inspired by colonization rather than a warped interpretation of history (which may or may not have been a fake story, anyway). Combine John Smith's confidence and bravery and John Rolfe's gentlemanly intellect and he'd be worthy of Pocahontas, who I think is one of Disney's best leads, character-wise.

@@orangeslash1667 The worst thing is that Pocahontas was used because the creators of the fi wanted a starcrossed lovers story and picked a piece of history centered on colonialism to do it. Granted, I'm sure there were colonial love stories, but from an optics POV, it probably would've been better if John Smith wasn't racist from the start (even if it provides a character arc), and we have more scenes of him and Pocahontas learning about each other's cultures. There was a deleted scene where John tells Pocahontas how English women dress, though he says she should be herself. It would've been nice to have had a montage. And I'm glad they kept Hellfire. I can see why the sequence feels WAAAY to risque for a kids' film. Most of the renaissance films prove Disney could be the first PG-13 film empire if they wanted.

2:56 Speaking of tragic, apparently in the stage play Frollo is a lot more sympathetic. I heard disney purposely made him “pure evil” because they feared people would actively root for him.

Something i did not notice until this video is the fact that the main reason that gargoyle breaks is due to Frollo slash it with his sword earlier in the confrontation. It causes a weakness in the stone so when he later stands on it to attack Quisimodo it cannot hold his weight. This perfectly shows that Frollo is responsible for his own downfall.

Hellfire is still my favorite Disney song ever.

I feel like he's even better in the stage musical, though not many have seen it. He's pulled back a little, instead of being terrifying he's creepy which is more realistic and nuanced than the movie characterization.

You should review why Sykes from Oliver and Company matters Like Frollo, he has no supernatural powers yet he’s strongly imitating and he has power to keep away from trouble with the law, not just money

He is the best and has always been my favorite in every way. They couldn't have done it better when it came to Kathy Zielinski animating and creating him.

Claude Frollo is definitely one of, if not THE darkest Disney villain. In fact, some might say he was too dark, at least for a children's film. But that just makes him that much greater.

someone with more musical theory knowledge than me should do a deep dive analysis of the Bells of Notre Dame, and how if you are paying attention, the song answers it's own question "Who is the monster and who is the Man?" because the majority of the song is a dialogue of themes between the bouncy Bells theme (for Quasi) and what later becomes known as Hellfire (representing Frollo). because the theme the song ends on, the one *immediately* after the question is asked, is Hellfire. but of course, first time listeners might not realize that the Hellfire theme represents Frollo, because he's introduced with what I call the Judgement theme. Hellfire - outside of the very start to the song, doesn't appear until Frollo is about to drown Quasi. Judgment makes a brief comeback during his attack of conscience, but the song makes it clear that Frollo has crossed a moral line, hence why his theme is now Hellfire instead of judgment.

frollo in the musical is quasi's uncle and he hates Romani people bc of how they made his brother fall from grace. frollo in the musical has an arc that is more like a descent into insanity and pure evil bc he lusts after esmarelda. he is still a dickhead at the start, just not completely cruel and evil.

I mean in the book he is. His brother married a gypsy who died to the plague I believe, and unfortunately his brother was a very bad father. But Frollo wasn’t much better in the book unfortunately.

Tony Jay was also the voice of the head of the insane asylum in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and of Shere Khan in "TaleSpin." A really standout Disney voice talent, better even than Jim Cummings, Tress MacNeill, or Rob Paulsen. Ironically, while Frollo is the most evil Disney villain, he's also the most tragic Disney villain. Unlike the other villains, Frollo doesn't WANT to be evil. He fears going to hell after he dies, and does everything (he thinks) will get him to heaven. But it's probably safe to say he goes to hell anyway, both for attempted murder and for his fantasies of rape. There's a very sad irony to that. One thing that never seems to be mentioned about this movie, however, is that Esmeralda never gets shamed for her behavior by anyone except Frollo. I can't help thinking that, if she'd appeared in a Disney movie at any time before about 1980, she'd be a villain herself, or at least an unpleasant comic-relief character. I realize it's inappropriate to say anything to besmirch Esmeralda, who is the moral heart of this movie. But, without intending to invoke the "She was asking for it!" rape defense, I will say that Esmeralda was the one who caused Frollo to experience the "Hellfire" guilt - and not innocently, but deliberately. You can see in this very video that she snuggled up to him at the festival while wearing her exotic costume, even though she must have known it would make him uncomfortable. If a man had done that to a woman, we would all be outraged. You could argue, "Oh, she's just an entertainer! It's all in good fun!" But there are limits to performance art, and there comes a point where it stops being funny. It doesn't help, either, that Esmeralda is voiced by Demi Moore, an actress who was getting villainess or temptress roles at this point in her career.

this movie is masterfully crafted, I saw half of the video, saw the movie again, fell in damn awe, and came back to see the rest of the video, falling in awe again, damn I miss old Disney

On top of it all, he has THE COOLEST final fight scene, and the best death in Disney history. Every good writer wants a villain like this.

I wish Disney would do a darker villain again-Frollo is one of my favorites because of how both realistic and terrifying he is as a character because he's a person you can realistically meet and be affected by in real life. Also side note but Tony Jay's voice is absolutely gorgeous in the way an old cathedral is-his tone has such this haunting, commanding elegance to it that really makes you just listen whenever Frollo speaks.

I actually hated this movie as a child because I would be terrified when he was on screen , even now i feel a bit anxious when i see him

I’m so glad this movie has gotten the recognition it deserves it (and it’s soundtrack) has always been a favorite of mine for the atmosphere it gives and I used to think it was one of those Disney rejects that have been lost to time

I'm worried that in the future Disney will remake this movie, and then make him Sympathetic... o-o

I think the gargoyle coming to life before Frollo dies is symbolic. Gargoyles were originally put on churches to drive away demons and evil spirits. Makes sense that in the end, Frollo, an evil spirit, is taken down to the firey depths of hell by one.
