Why Evolution is Stupid | Voddie Baucham

On the 21st of September, Pastor Voddie Baucham spoke on the Perfection of God's law from Psalm 19.
He explains why God's law is perfect. This video is just a summary of what he preached. If you want to hear the full sermons, you can come to ACU on Wednesday.
Every Wednesday: the African Christian University has Chapel sessions from 12 to 13 o clock. Various speakers preach on a range of different topics. Anyone is welcome to come and listen to the word at that time.

Thank you, Dr. Baucham. I have grown up in the Christian faith and attended years and years of private Christian education, but never bore any fruit until coming to college and being exposed to a community of believers who really surrounded me, fellow young and older men who made Christ their priority. One of them recommended Paul Washer and Dr. Baucham, and these men have been so influential in making me bold for the faith and have lit a passion for the Lord. I would not be who I am today without Dr. Baucham's teaching, and I am incredibly thankful that the Lord has used him to proclaim his truth. Glory to God

Just remember the truth 2000 years ago is not always the truth today. We've discovered so much. It's great to be influenced by thought provoking men such as Dr. Baucham, but never limit yourself to the same opinions. Rather explore different views in order to find WISDOM & not indoctrination!

I am at present doing a course in anatomy and physiology. The breathtaking complexity of the body, and the multiplicity of harmonious interactions between its parts, declares without any doubt the hand of God. The physical responses to a decision made in the mind, for instance, shows without doubt the fact that we are created beings, not some product of chance. If, for example, I decide to walk over to my bookcase and pick up a book, my body complies with my wish. Muscles expand and contract, joints bend, so that I stand and then walk across the room. Fingers extend and take shape and then close upon the book; the arm bends and straightens as I lift the book from the shelf. In a simple course of action - i.e. getting a book and carrying it back to my desk - my body has performed thousands of separate but co-joined movements. And amazingly I have not deliberately coordinated them, or been aware of them as they take place within me! The Lord knows every cell in our bodies. We live and move and have our being in Christ. It is He who maintains His creation, who coordinates all things, the Master mathematician, artist, scientist, musician. All good things come from God. He is beyond our understanding, but amazingly He loves us and has provided a Sacrifice so that we can be forgiven our sins and reconciled to Him. Christ knows every atom, every particle in the universe which He has created. He demonstrated power and rightful authority over the sea and the wind and over sickness and disease. And yet He was supremely humble as He walked among His creatures. He was supremely courageous as He walked boldly towards Jerusalem, knowing that before Him were ridicule, torture and the agonies of the cross. And He did this because He loved me! And you! For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, despising the shame. Heaven will be full of beautiful things, but the most beautiful thing of all will be the joyful smile on the face of the Lord Jesus as He looks upon the multitudes of rejoicing souls gathered around Him that He has redeemed by His work on the cross. Oh to praise Him forever, with hearts spilling over with love for Him, as we will be capable of doing in the glory when we shall no longer be encumbered with a sin nature or living in a corrupted environment. We await His soon coming, and while we wait let us pray that He will lead us by His holy Spirit to hear His voice and to obey Him and live for Him in every area of our lives; our thoughts and words and conduct, and our use of time. He alone can empower us to do this. Our good intentions, our very highest intentions and holy aspirations, are in vain unless He empowers them. He will not share His glory; sanctification is of the Lord every bit as much as salvation is! It is He who changes us from glory to glory, not ourselves. We thank Him for His word, the bible, which teaches us how we should walk in the Spirit. How our warfare is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers in high places. And our weapons are not swords and fists and guns, but prayer, and scriptural knowledge so that we are ready to give anyone who asks us the reason for our joy a right answer, sincerely giving glory to the Lord, whether they ask in a spirit of opposition or with a genuine hunger for the truth. Teach us Lord, and grant us a humble and teachable spirit. Deliver us from self-centredness unto Christ-centredness.

Sadly, there are none so blind as those who refuse to see! Their hearts and minds are darkened, and wilfully so. Pretty interesting stuff. As an evolutionary biologist myself, I can say confidently that “brilliance” is definitely the wrong word to describe a blind process like evolution. Those podcasters really should have been more careful in their word choice. Evolution is an unthinking, unfeeling process that does just as many terribly inefficient things as it does amazing ones. It’s all dependent on chance, environment, and what building blocks it’s working with.

The pastor here is correct that far too many people study math and science because they're told that it will get them a good paying job, but all the best scientists and mathematicians study it for a different reason, and it isn't the one that he suggests. I'm an atheist who studied math and physics in college, and I continue to study these subjects on my own even now that I have graduated. The reason I continue to pursue math is that the structure of mathematical logic is just delightful: the way you can start from simple axioms and by using only the rules of logic deduce complicated and surprising results is a source of endless fascination. Thinking about math feels something like exploring a forest where there are thousands of branching paths along which there are countless treasures: waterfalls, giant trees, amazing creatures, lakes, and meadows. Many of the paths are overgrown and difficult to find, but if you're persistent and can find a way through, the payoff is like nothing else in the world. Many mathematicians describe finding new treasures that no one else has yet found as some of the happiest moments of their lives. As you continue exploring the mathematical forest, you find new paths to the same treasures and you begin to see the ways in which all of the paths are interconnected and how absolutely huge the forest is. It's wonderful! The reason the best scientists study science is for a very similar reason: they're delighted by it! I don't think anyone has ever conveyed it better than Richard Feynman in his Fun to Imagine interview: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmWr2ZOCiLXMhKQ.html The pastor does have a point when criticizes people for anthropomorphizing evolution, saying things like "evolution is brilliant" or "evolution designed gibbons to be perfectly adapted to living in trees". This is a common source of misunderstanding that comes from the somewhat confusing way that people tend to talk about the evolutionary process. The process by which organisms evolve is not conscious, so it cannot be brilliant or have any goal in mind. People who study evolution are fully aware of this fact, but they talk of evolution in this way as a convenient shorthand. It's kind of like saying "planets like to orbit the sun in elliptical paths" rather than "it can be shown mathematically that the inverse square law for gravitational attraction and the conservation of angular momentum conspire so that any gravitationally bound orbiting body must follow an elliptical path relative to the body around which it orbits". See? Planets don't "like" to do anything, but it's sometimes just easier to talk about them as if they do, especially if the person you are talking to understands what you mean by the word "like".

And yet it isn't a fact. Evolutionary theory is a metaphysical claim against dualism. Evolution is claimed true based only on the premise of ontological naturalism. There are no evidences that cannot be equally, and much more rationally, attributed to a creation event. The statistical probabilities for evolution are irrationally long, yet since life exists that argument is dismissed (happened in a thread here on this video). The only logical reason to dismiss such tremendous weight against the capacity of random mutations is to dismiss any alternative, in this case intelligent agency aka God. Things are true or they aren't. When has evolution ever been shown capable of building new body plans?

I remember hearing about a robot that was on a TV show perhaps 5-7 years ago and it was asked what it wants to do or be and the robot replied, "I want to be as smart as humans". It's ironic, the robot can embrace a creator/creation paradigm in that the creator is smarter than the creation and wishes to emulate, and yet some humans deny that we are the result of a creator creating.

It's not actually denying, the issue is that it makes no sense that there is such a huge lack of proof for such a great existence, and the arguments used for God's existence, are either backed up by many logical fallacies, or by basing it all on the unknown. For example: "We don't know who made the universe than it must've been God." Or else, they're based on the Bible, which is full of contradictions.

The point I'm trying to illustrate is that we can all agree on these 3 individuals existing as they did in the texts. Mark 4:41 "...who is this? Even the wind and waves obey him!" Jesus is God the son which is a part of the trinity. God the father created everything. Jesus was proof, but even in his day there were disbelievers. You claim there are contradictions in the Bible, but did not care to give an example. What is your example. If you stumbled across a wrist watch and didn't know who made it you could still deduce that given our natural laws in this universe someone had to make it, it didn't just randomly come together by chance. Creationists admit full well that it takes faith to believe in God as the creator, but evolutionists will never admit their faith in something that has never been observed and violates numerous natural laws.

You claim there is way more proof of those guys existence? Did you know that all over the globe there are trees buried throughout the layers both upright and upside down connecting the layers. This is a huge problem for geologists because if the layers were truly millions of years those trees would have decayed, alas they didn't but instead were petrified. Only a world wide flood could have done that. Hmm, I wonder if there is a book giving an account of a world wide flood. You can go to Turkey where they have a national park dedicated to Noah's ark, yes it actually exists. You want proof of a young earth? It's been estimated that the Sahara desert is approximately 4,400 years old. That's odd that's right about the time right after the flood just as the Bible said. Again, you're claiming evidence without actually providing something specific, but instead you relegate to generalized terms like "there is more evidence for this or that". Life is intelligent in itself. Trees aren’t persons but their roots will grow wide and broad to soak in water, and grow around obstacles, through sidewalks, etc. Life itself is brilliant. Cells are like miniature computers and have incredible functions that are quite… well brilliant. However I agree with Voddie that ultimate brilliance and glory should be ascribed to God alone, which the scientists don’t do. They do make an idol of evolution and their false ideologies and suppress the knowledge of God.

However, if you say, why have you called them stupid if they have rightly said brilliant according to these temporal objects, I would say, look to 1 Corinthians, where the Apostle Paul males it clear that every praise and every seemingly good thing that man does is an offering to devils. Idols he also calls them, dead dumb idols the Old testament refers to these as, gross idols also. As you can see, it is utterly abominable to praise these idols. So I can make the clear connection that these things, the wise cell structures, the sparkling majesty of the stars, the implacable nature of a tree's roots, all become idolatry when not viewed in the presence of God. Outside kf praise to God, all these things are useless to spiritual beings such as ourselves, who are sustained day to day by the amazing greatness of God. Brilliance is not simply ascribed to God, it is God. God may grant us who know to ascribe greatness to these things, but because these men don't know and don't want to know, and hate fervently the ascriptiom and inscription of God, they would be acknowledged as somewhat stupid, though I would simply say that they have eaten the bread of foolishness. because I was once stupid in the same manner. However, God’s creation can inherit the brilliance of their creator, as God created them to point towards his glory. Anybody who goes to that fire place, on your word that it is a heater, mind you, will surely die of hypothermia because what they need and what it is we are talking about ain't there. Also the irony in this is that to have the glory of God something, you have to glorify God with it. Otherwise, the glory you are talking about is not glory, it's just a delight in something you like. They cannot coexist. Evolutionary theory is purely driven by natural processes, anything else would be evolution of a different nature, such as the evolution of the automobile. I've no problem with the idea that creation was an event spanning much time and was a process involving genetic manipulations. Can't say that's a sound explanation but it doesn't hurt my theology, but that isn't evolution. The origins question leads to the much more important question: *Is God?* If God does exist, the most critical action in your life is to pursue a relationship with Him. If God does not exist, there is no justification for life and nihilism is the most justified philosophy. Origins, when examined carefully, points distinctly towards God. _And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell._

Evolution in the context of biology means the theory of evolution, which is a specific thing and not merely "evolution". If such laws existed that allowed biology to produce new body plans by purely natural processes I would agree, God would be the author of those laws. Problem with that is, they don't exist. As for the theory allowing for God... that is also a non-starter. If God was credited with the origin of life there is no justification to disallow that causality to be injected into the entire process. In other words, If God started it, why insist God abandoned the process to random chance? The theory does insist on random mutations without direction or purpose. They are incompatible.

@@jon__doe The fact that species change and adapt over time is a proven FACT. A good example would be elephants today. More and more male elephants are being born without tusks. It can easily be explained by the fact that tuskless male elephants are not being killed by poachers for their ivory so they are more likely to pass on their genes. Look at the king cheetah that has stripes and spots for camouflage. At some point a genetic mutation cropped up and maybe it gave the Cheetah's with this genetic adaptation an advantage in hunting so they are more successful and pass on their genes more often and we are seeing more and more "King" Cheetah's. Just look at how humans have created HUNDREDS of different dog breeds that can all trace their origins back to the wolf. With human intervention the evolutionary process is massively accelerated but the simple fact that a Chihuahua was "Created" by man PROVES that evolution does in fact take place in the natural world.

  • @jon__doe

@@CRAZYHORSE19682003 Apples and oranges. Adaptation isn't evolution. It's not the same. One produces small changes by different expression of existing genetic information or a loss of information to better meet the challenges of an environment, the other is capable of new body plans by random mutations. The chihuahua is still a dog. There is no evidence, for example, the genetic information required for a whale's body can be produced from the genetic information from a land animal like a hippo. Evolution does mean "change over time" but the Theory of Evolution is a very specific thing. I was blown away by the intelligent articulation in the first 8 minutes. I was disappointed in the validation of the awful title by the idea that nature cannot be brilliant. The worst part about this is that I, and most likely the scientists to which he is referring, conceive the brilliance, beauty, and masterful planning of nature in the exact same way as sophisticated theologians think of God. Your insistence that such brilliance cannot be architected by forces of nature is not stupid, it's just unfortunate. The shin like there pop’s the morning star… shines bright… but when I shine… it separates the dark and the light. It pushes the dark back… and as the darkness charges in… the light… still separates the darkness from the light… my light shines 24 hours a day… on the world that was set in the heavens… come to the light…. This Psalm tells us so much about God when we look closely and read carefully. Where it says "The heavens are telling of the glory of God" it uses the word "elohim." This is a rather generic word for God. It simply means deity, but doesn't tell us much more than that. So natural revelation tells us unmistakably that there is a God, but it is limited in telling us all that there is to know about Him. The Psalm goes on to say that "the law of the LORD is perfect." Here the word for LORD is "Yahweh." It is His written word given to man that tells us His name. His name is not written in the stars, but His special revelation tells us who made them and tells us much more about who He is. Yet even this knowledge does not bring us into relationship with Him. It is not until the end of the Psalm that we find for God the names that can only be used of Him by someone in relationship with Him, "O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." This goes beyond natural revelation and even special revelation. This is knowing God personally. And the most amazing thing is that such a relationship and such an intimate knowledge of the very God who created the universe and all that is within it and sustains it in existence is actually possible! Small and insignificant as we are on a cosmic scale, God nonetheless sent his very Son into this world to redeem us so that we can be in relationship with Him. Praise be to God!

Amen. Thank you but I have to admit I was hoping for more of a practical and scientific approach based on the title. The word of God is always great , of course, but I still question the wisdom of trying to use general scripture when someone is looking for a specific, practical answer. It was like when Ken Ham was debating Bill Nye. I don’t think the answer “well because it says so in the Bible” (paraphrase) is always our best. I think we, generally, need to hit them with true science then tie it in into scripture. Unless, I misunderstood this completely and it was intended primarily for those who are already believers.

I disagree. If you believe that Scripture is truly inspired by God, innerant and infallible then why on earth, as a follower of Jesus Christ, would you turn to manly wisdom for answers? Do you believe Hebrews 4:12 is true? If so, then you should NEVER try to convince people into christian through science. Why? As my seminary professor put it, "If you can convince someone into believing God, there will ALWAYS be someone smarter than you who can convince them out of it". Brother, I exert you, just as Paul did to the Corinthians; Stop trying to use flattering arguments to be accepted by the secular world.
