Solo dev gets harder as games get more impressive so there will be a linear increase in "right ways" to cope as an indie dev. We're all developing games for years with no guarantee, so yes, everyone's living in one big soup of madness trying to define how to solo dev. It is a brutal journey, especially if your game development process is being made publicly. That's quite a vulnerable position to be in for someone who's also learning and defining themselves as a dev.

I like how you put that. After years of feeling too self conscious to share my work I finally started a series of dev diaries in 2019. Took a long time to mostly refine my process, it's something I'll iterate on my entire life.

As a solo dev (hobbyist) I agree. It's true that we have access to more and more amazing tools every year- but the problem is that the more tools that you have access to, the higher you set the bar for yourself.

  • @cybershellrev7083

@@kellygallagher7148 - Well my bar is set on how I intend the experience to be, how I can simplify it and if it competes well in the market. This doesn't mean it's the tools exclusively that are the problem, it's the amount of projects that are already executing ideas and aesthetics so well that we have to be a little more creative, refined and analytically more dynamic than usual just to stick out on the market. This happens to every industry and already has happened to the Art and music industry; oversaturation.

I've been feeling insecure about using an asset pack for my environment because my favourite part of gamedev is environment art. Thank you Thomas. The thing that clicked for me by the end of that video was this: use the pack. finish the game. make a sequel with your own art. Every time I restart my project it gets better. I know this. Time to finish it and move onto the next project.

your words have helped with lightening the pressure load, but I also find that every time I sit down, I lack the experience in so many items. Programming, Tools, Art, Software, modeling, fundamentals, and Music are all things I struggle with. I can find all of this on the Unity store or find some way around them. However it does not bring any unique-ness to me or my game. I have heard many success stories from indies about how they never had any experience in game development and then sat down one day and boom! I work in computers, have programming basics and cant understand how code becomes an object. Maybe I don't have to understand it, but I always like to understand what I am working with. not just hey this is magic! You do this and do that and out comes a game. Your words have inspired me to at least try again and again and again.

But, I've just started ignoring that and just continuing my dev journey as I see fit. I'd like to eventually replace what I'm using as placeholder if possible but we'll see if budget or skill acquired along the way will permit it.

This is a great and very needed video. Recently I released a very similar one, talking about this exact thing just from slightly different perspective. There is one small thing which I think is maybe just a bit "dangerous" when it comes to mind set - the word 'talent'. I completely get what you want to say and I agree 100%, I just feel that when somebody wants to start making games they feel 'they have no talent for anything'. We should start telling people that 'talent' doesn't exist. Ultimately, it's all about having experience in something, putting a lot of effort into doing that and overtime learning to do it faster, better and so on. It's quite a common subject in our discord where somebody says to another person "oh, I wish I could do xyz as well as you" and the reply is always - that's easy 'practice, practice, practice'. Once again, I love the video and I am happy you talk about it :).

I'd say the main reason is overreaching leading to becoming overwhelmed and losing heart. Some of that is life getting in the way, commitments like day jobs and families that we all want and love but it does make it hard, especially if you've bitten off that bit more than you can realistically achieve in your limited time

Great advice! I do compare myself to larger games but only in as much as I can glean genius from them. Did I do as much % wise with the resources as Portal? Sure, they had millions(perhaps) and I have thousands... but did I multiply my efforts the same? I actually love having less and being required to do more. In board game design, I loved how some people decided the backs of cards were now part of the game rather than dead graphics. This is what I look for. Opportunities to get more using less.

Lol it’s incredibly hard to get started, you have to be a one man army when you’re first starting out. You have to become proficient in c++ or c#. Learn every specialization in 2D/3D art, modeling, rigging, animation, texturing etc learning sound design and music production etc. that’s just for a small game you can realistically build without 1000 team members and $300mil budget. On top of that if you want to be in the mainstream industry most studios expect you to have a degree nowadays and going that route isn’t much better. The industry is notorious for being cruel, especially to artists, but in general everyone is very overworked and massively underpaid. The work the graphics programmers do for example in any other industry they’d be making at least 25% more.

Leave and find a better job if that's your excuse. Are you a developer? It's not hard to get started and you don't need a massive team to accomplish anything. You can learn as you go and you don't need to be an expert in every field like you said and you absolutely don't need formal education to start learning. I just started learning unity earlier this year and I have zero programming knowledge but I'm getting close to having a full demo of my game with help from a few friends and a few different communities.

So many reasons really. Fear of criticism/failure (insecurity), hatred of hard work, the existence of other tasks/pursuits in life that may get in the way. There are some really nuanced fears too. Like the fear of undeserving praise. Or the fear of leading people astray with your art (if it's narrative based.) The similar fear of people not receiving your art the way you intended (and thus being angry at you for it.) Last but not least there's that existential fear... of playing a miniature "god." Creating pain and pleasure, playing with darkness and light the way you see fit. I of course do not want these fears to overwhelm anyone of us. A world without any art creation is a world I will not be reborn in. By all means Courage is still a virtue to me, so overcome this illusory firewall at will. But it's fine, I think, to be mindful of its existence. At least.

I didn’t do any marketing beforehand - I should have. Now Im doing a major update to the game every year as I learn better programming practices and this year I’m starting to actually get some organic reach on the App Store! Now I’m getting maybe 100 downloads per week on average. Im also starting to get good feedback from players and making plans for more future updates. You got this, it will take time but figure out a post-launch plan and how to get all of your hard work in front of people. Start small and go from there. Focus on the things you can control. So instead, I have been using bought assets but have breaking them apart like legoes and piecing them together, and changing textures...find a way!

I have been working with unity for two months. But it is certain that nbem alone can develop a game that meets all standards. I can see that now. You cannot be a programmer and model developer and animator at the same time. My own conviction is that if I want to make a normal game, I need a smaller team.

There's nothing wrong with getting inspired by these bigger games... the fault comes when you start to compare what you're working on to those bigger games and thinking you're failing. Inspiration can come from anywhere. For example, maybe I want to make a game where a central thread to the game is the dynamic between a father and son. I would lie if I said that it wasn't at all inspired by God of War... or even Logan to a degree (I know that it was more of a father/daughter thing here... but the theme remains consistent). Don't be afraid to be inspired by anything in life. But make your project to your standards and compare the results to the results you had yesterday, not to other people's stuff. Constantly improve, but for yourself.

The biggest thing that brings me down the most is the steam review stuff. I get 400+ players a month and the only people who tend to leave reviews are the negative ones that only have 10 minutes of playtime. This brings my score way down and makes it feel like an uphill battle. I have people who come back everyday to play and people who enjoy stuff typically don’t leave reviews unless asked. I understand this as I am the same way it just sucks as the developer that mostly only negative people get the voice. I am moving my games to epic games store PC exclusive in the future because they have a way better system of handling reviews/ratings.

@@uglyshack9552 the one I am talking about is Mall of Mayhem on steam. It’s at 66% because I had people who played for 10 minutes then quit and left unhelpful and dumb negative reviews. The game was also in early access until august and I’ve got negative reviews on content that’s not even in the game anymore like the dickhead mr Jacob’s guy. It’s not a perfect game but I got a lot of players and a good chunk are repeating players. Most people just don’t leave reviews. It shouldn’t be a huge issue in the future though since I am moving away from steam and am setting up systems on places like the App Store that have a playtime counter before asking for a review. Epic has a playtime counter built into the launcher for reviews at 2 hour mark to prevent 10 minute trolls

to answer the clickbait title (which isn't completely clickbait he has some points) Why Everyone Wants To Make Games But Nobody Does? Video Games has to be the most laborious forms of media to create. "Most People" People Like me, probably picked up Unreal or Unity, wanting to make a game like their favorite game, Not knowing How much man power or budget went into games like that. (imagine the kind of people getting into game dev because they wanted to make a cod/gta clone and abandoned it after a week) Ive observed that the game devs that survive this dont come in wanting to make something specific, they just be vibing to the creative process, failing a lot but having fun while failing.

  • @arkle111

I personally disagree with a lot of what you say. I agree that there is a large amount of gate keeping in the game development community. However, while making a game is “easy”. Making a “good” game is very difficult. Portraying game dev as so easy like you do sets people up to quit, to fail. Why? When people find out they can’t make the game they want because its actually really tough, they think they are stupid, because they are told it’s actually really easy these days. It’s simple, the reason nobody makes games is not because of “gatekeepers”, or bad feedback. It’s because its hard and that’s ok. Also, I agree that Indie devs should be ok to use assets. However, I still think its important to learn about the basics of 3D modelling and such like poly count etc so you dont end up wasting money buying crapping models with 100000 polygons that make your game run slow.

Strongly agree. Anyone who says game development is easy is trying to sell you something (in this video, barely a minute later comes the sales pitch -- no attempt at subtlety here). But in reality, game development is extremely, extremely hard. It's extremely hard even for well-established and well-funded studios, to say nothing of indies. And worst of all, the hardest parts, the most painful parts, the least enjoyable parts of game development often come later in the process, so those initial feelings of fun and satisfaction aren't necessarily an accurate picture of what the job really is. It's easy and fun to open up an engine, get accustomed to it, and start building something cool, and it's easy to envision all the success you'll have. But to turn that into something fun and engaging for a particular audience, something that you'll be proud of, and to build, balance, debug and then ship that -- that is a whole other beast, and it requires excellence coming together in many disciplines, including ones you ultimately might not enjoy at all. As with any business, it takes some luck too. I wholeheartedly agree that insecurity often holds us back, and I have personally battled with it throughout my lifetime, but sometimes that "insecurity" is actually the recognition that a project simply isn't viable, or that the work isn't actually enjoyable, or that you're not willing/able to make the sacrifices (oh the sacrifices... any indie dev story talks about the sacrifices). If that's your problem, courses and asset stores and their psychologically predatory sales tactics (flash sales! limited seats! coming soon: loot boxes?) won't fix that.
