Why EVERYONE in this town speaks 3 languages 🇲🇰

Desovo, North Macedonia. A town in the south of North Macedonia near Prilep where almost everyone speaks 3 languages: Macedonian, Albanian and Bosnian/Serbian. The reasons why involve geopolitics ranging from the Ottoman era of the 1500s right up through the Turkish-Yugoslav relations of the 1950s.

*One parent Muslim, another Christian (Orthodox) OR one parent Bosnian and another Serb. Saying plainly Muslim, one could think that the Muslim parent is from Pakistan or Malaysia or wherever. I saw that you've visited some villages near Prizren like Planjane,.. I would recommend you to visit some villages as Globocica, Restelica, Brod, Rapca, Vranista located in Dragas region, south of Prizren. In that area you'll find a people that belong to a unique minority ethnic group called Gorani people that speak Bosnian/Serbian/Macedonian. This is so insane. I have watched some of your earlier videos, and now you are in Desovo. My father was born in Desovo, and I have been there numerous times. Your historic intro is spot on, and even a lot of people in Desovo do not know why they ended up there when they are natively from Sandzak. How did you hear of Desovo? None of the Bosniaks or Macedonians speak Albanian though. But as you experienced, the Albanians speak all three languages. The Bosnian that they speak is with a Sandzak accent which you already mentioned but they also mix some Macedonian words, especially the young people. The Sandzak culture is very strong there and when people get married you will see the Sandzak flag all over. People often say that if you want to experience the real Sandzak you have to come to Macedonia. Very impressed with your videos.

It wasn’t “migration”… it was “ethnic cleansing” of the Albanian Native population. Macedonia was given to Christians by Europe, and was given a green light to depopulate it of the Muslims… so they reached an agreement with Turkey to lure them and give them vast lands in Anatolia (now 5M plus Albanians in Turkey). If the Muslim Albanians are now 33% of Macedonia, Orthodox Albanians were forced to identify as Macedonians. Prior to Albanians being exiled to a Turkey, they were at least 2/3… and prior to the Balkan Wars which killed a lot of Albanians, it was upward of 80%…

That "northern" is very offensive - it is not our decision but a political one between the Greek government and the Vlach political structures in MACEDONIA - 🤷 ♂️ we don't care how many times you use "northern" we will only speak MACEDONIA until our death

Why was that dude carrying Windex with him all the way up the hill? Too funny. Also I understand the self-deprecating humor, and how it helps put people at ease sometimes, but we do study languages in the USA, unless you're really poor and attending a terrible public school. By the time I graduated high school, I had 4 years of German (grades 9-12), 6 years of Spanish (grades 4-9), and even a year of Latin.. so, not all of us are complete morons in the US

Thanks for your comment! I also thought the windex was hilarious. My point wasn’t that we don’t study other languages, but that we don’t learn them very well. I took Italian for 6 years between high school and college and I couldn’t speak it at all. Most of my friends took Spanish for 4 years and today they can’t even form a sentence, etc. meanwhile, everyone in this town is fluent in 3 languages
