Youth Academies in EVERY major basketball club in Europe: Real Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia (Spain), Partizan and Crvena Zvezda (Serbia), Panathinaikos and Olympiacos (Greece), CSKA (Russia), Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş (Turkey) etc. Scouts pick you up at early age (5-6 years old), sometimes even provide you full support: food, education and accommodation. Coaches there mostly retired players from same Academies, who played for home clubs. So experience and principles are passed from older generation to younger. Ask Doncic about his days in Olimpija Basketball School. Plus european basketball is team oriented, team first, as long as team winning - who cares about your triple-double? So once those EU youngsters arrive to NBA they are READY and years ahead when native players need 2-3 years to learn organized basketball.

Big facts!!

Because they don’t have the same type of gatekeepers in Europe that are in America. In Europe you can turn pro as a 16 year old. If you demonstrate a high skill level you are instantly steered in that direction. Here they make you go to high school and in some sports they make you go to college. If a guy in Europe is playing professionally at 15 and a guy in the states is playing AAU/high school basketball against kids his own age, who do you think is going to develop faster? Also, fundamentals are stressed more over there because they don’t have our natural athleticism. If you’re an average athlete you better be fundamentally sound or have one transcendent skill like shooting or passing.

We also have to acknowledge that we only get the very best of the best from other countries… if you measure our very best against their very best I’m not sure that the gap is as wide as this makes it seem

Imagine if the conversations about the achievement gap in academics were had with this kind of sencerity and transparency. Not a bad actor in the bunch. Just dudes with the pedigree and experience to add valuable perspectives who legitimately want to see it get better.

It´s common in Europe to let kids train with the men´s team, but only if they earned it. So from beginning your are creating a second competition branch. First one is to make the youth team starting five, and the second is to get permission to train with the men´s team. Those kids look up to the men´s team and with the possibility to train with them you give them a reason to grind hard every single practice. As a teen I was fortunate enough to get invited to train with men´s team (which is always on top of the major league, in country I live in), and not only made me a better player it also made me a better person later in life. Now as a youth coach my self I do this with my boys too.

They say euro kids are pro early and more skilled but ever yea in fiba 19u,18u,17u ,the USA better then them

KG come to the Serbia bro... Land of basketball and see for yourself how do we make players. Also you will have the best hospitality in the world, the best food and best night life. Also and maybe the most important thing is that we all are born and raised with Jordan mentalty " i took it personal"... Same as Kobe, Novak Djokovic, Jokic, old school Divac, Bodiroga, Stojakovic... So, take that P. Pierce 😂 and feel real atmosphere in games with Crvena Zvezda Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade.

Fellas I also think the economics around the game are different in the US which then bleeds into the basketball culture The AAU circuit is focused on building that teams brand so they get star players…they’re geared towards the highlight reels as opposed to actually developing players The NCAA has been transitioning into a professional league the past few years as well I think skills development has become an afterthought for American players at a young age and they tend to rely on athleticism…which is fine up until you make the NBA and realize it’s a totally different level and now you have to train differently and learn new habits which is hard for any young guy Our social media driven society isn’t helping either In Europe every major team has a farm system of sorts where the recruit guys as young as 12,13 and bring them in onto the youth teams The NBA should invest heavily into the G league and bring in players at a much younger age, but the economics of that would be costly and the NBA isn’t interested in doing the job that high schools and AAU teams should be doing I would redirect things that way but in America that’s probably impossible to do because our high schools are so dependent on sports

@@ektran4205 only out of necessity because that’s just where the majority of players are, AAU has exploded since the internet age began because it’s organized differently and it’s more easily manipulated and paying players is baked into the recipe Most kids still play for their high schools as well but there are only a few dozen major high school programs in the country, usually near or in major metropolitan areas so it’s for those kids to get exposure, that the advantage of travel AAU is that it gets the players in front of more eyes around the country I think the overall basketball landscape is kinda broken in America because it’s so fragmented. If I’m the NBA I would invest more in G league and bring in guys at 14 so they at least have 2-3 years to truly learn the fundamentals and develop skills while they grow, by the time they’re 18-21 they can hit the ground running like the European players

They develop full fundamentals and Americans are athletic and not sound

Different generation..not great at Ball handling. Isaiah Thomas came from the streets, Dr. J. Rucker park. You could drive for miles in chicago and never see a pick up game now. Euro players are put into acadameys where they eat sleep and breathe basketball.

All I've watched from the young Americans kids coming up is athleticism / dunking and open 3's, no real substance to their game
