Why England FINALLY Came Good Against The Netherlands

Спорт

England are into the final of Euro 2024 after a stunning 2-1 victory over The Netherlands. Ollie Watkins' late goal sent Gareth Southgate's men into the final, but after a tournament where they've endured criticism from all quarters, it was a goal the team - and two players in particular - fully deserved.

by the same token, we have seen Watkins scored same type of goals for Villa so many times. There's no doubt England will have a better chance of winning the finals with Watkins over Kane. But the biasness of the power there will ensure Kane starts....the ridicule of a lifetime, to hope Kane will turn it on. He has proven in the last 5 games he has lost much of his sharpness, touch, strength and goal prowess. His penalty and header scored in this tournament could have been scored easily by a youth team top scorer. Kane is now flat footed and will not score as much as he did with Bayern next season. Kane's demise is not the least exaggerated at all.

P.S Kudos on the insanely quick turnaround in this video - I didn't even look for it until Thursday afternoon!

Kane isn’t just not running in behind, he is not turning up in the box when the winger is crossing. That is twice that he has been in line with Saka when Saka received the ball, Saka has run all the way to the line crossed it into the centre of the penalty box and Kane hasn’t even ambled into the box yet let alone been close to getting on the end of it. If he was just off getting there like Watkins on Shaw’s cross it would be considered unlucky, but not even getting into the box is simply not good enough. The substitutions were so obvious every commentator and fan is calling for it, some from before the start of the match, but most by the 50th minute. Making the obvious change 20 minutes after everyone else would is not tactical genius, Watkins probably would have had 2 more decent chances to score with another 20 minutes. It looks like Kane’s only real chance to score will be from set plays where he might get a header or a knock down. Is he carrying an injury? Even his hold up play is below his usual level.

Yeah, exactly. 10 minutes only, when the Dutch changed it up at halftime. We were struggling for a full 35 mins. If the Dutch had scored in that time, we'd have had huge problems. I think Southgate knows what to do, but often bottles it. In fact, he said as much in the post match interview. He said, both Kane and Foden were doing well and they didn't really need to come off, but he thought he should freshen things up for the impending extra time. He got lucky, basically. Just imagine if Watkins had had 30 mins with the Dutch playing so high up? The game would have been out of sight. There's still MASSIVE question marks over Southgate for me. He's so cautious, it's painful to watch. Yes, he has success with this approach, so I can't knock that, but it's never convincing... intrigued by the Spain game. Every 20% more boldness could win it for him, but he has an equal chance of freezing, like he has in the past and watching the game get away from him.

The two CB's and Cucurella couldn't hold Kolo Muani and he scored the easiest header against three defenders. The 6'5 Milenkovic was dragged by Kane to the near post while Bellingham won the header against 6'2 Veljkovic. It's the timing and positioning which England does well to score headers just like Muani left for dead the two centre backs of Spain with only Cucurella behind him and scored the easiest header with no pressure. Also Wirtz equalised after a ball headed back into the box by Havertz who won the aerial duel. Spain lost so many aerials against Germany in their own box it wasn't even funny. The secret for Englands success has been playing Mainoo and Foden between the lines. In the first three games there was simply too large a gap between backs and midfield. Their willingness to run their legs off in order to find space and receive the ball has been outstanding. But they then constantly turned and drove at the Dutch. The Spanish will press high and if we do not have an outlet we will get torn apart. I hate to say it but we need Harry on the bench and Watkins starting. I can also see the Spanish man marking Foden. The number of times walker doesn't release Saka is astounding - almost criminal. It's as if it's not a 100% pass for walker so he decides against it. Granted, Saka often has no choice but to turn back anyway, as the way the pass is given is usually when he's pinned to the sideline. At arsenal, White has been instructed to play passes inside the line for saka to receive on the run as he drifts inwards - why can't walker be instructed to do the same?

@@SunnyDispossession he is just not that kind of player and I agree, his inclusion on the right hand side is part of the reason England were so awful to watch in the group games. The reason Pep likes him, is the same reason Gareth won’t drop him for a more expansive RB, he’s one of the best recovery defenders in the world. When he’s playing well, he’ll rarely give the ball away and will occasionally conjure up a chance, like he did against Denmark (I think it was?) plus the Saka offside goal the other night. I’m TAA’s biggest fan and still can’t understand why SG can’t play him at RB for low block teams. When Saka scored his first pro hatrick for England, we saw some fine interplay on the right from these 2 and I’m sure that combo could have been nurtured coming into this tournament with devastation but alas, it’s all fruitless pondering. Imagine if Ben White cared less about his tan this summer and more about offering England another option down the right?? 😂

  • @ams1897

Personally, I think the idea that TAA can only play against some teams is largely cowardice on the part of England. Spain had Jesus Navas up against Mbappe ffs. Trent has played against the best players in the world and in high pressure situations. He also isn’t anywhere near as bad defensively as people make out, nor is Walker as good. It makes sense to play him and it would really make the team dangerous. It will never happen though and it’s largely the fault of the ridiculous dissections the media make every time he makes a mistake. Doesn’t happen to any of our other right backs.

@@ams1897 it is maddening that SG is happy to use a system where Trippier is used as the left sided attacking overload but the WC player who could switch the ball 50/60 yards to make that tactic effective is not on the pitch. Imagine how we could stretch teams if TAA was right back and Saka was the left-sided forward. Watching this England team play you quickly understand why TAA is on the bench. They have absolutely no intention to counter-attack, which I feel is the main reason England fans are so appalled with what we’ve witnessed in this tourno. The PL is a feast of teams playing through a high press and then creating chances from a couple of direct vertical passes. But whenever this England team has defended deep, they have all 11 men behind the ball, with zero plan to try and break out with committing men forward. We’ve witnessed it in every game and I’m sure we’ll see it again on Sunday.

It looks like he is conserving his own energy in order to be fresh for THE chance. He has enough pace and awareness to time his run. Great player that he is, we are watching a striker who is far too easy to mark. Ollie Watkins would have created a lot more chances for himself and others through his endeavor if he had been on the pitch longer. I would also be looking at starting Anthony Gordon in the first or second half on the left in the same system to absolutely terrify the Spain back line. England had all the time on the ball, which is perfect for players like Bellingham and Foden and Saka. After Depay came off you saw that with Veerman as an extra player in midfield spaces were narrower and England didn't came through. England couldn't switch to a different play. Watkins though doesn't get that pass unless someone makes it, and Palmer understands the run. So credit to both changes Southgate makes to switch up the style attack. Now, why didn't he do it ten minutes earlier? But still, credit for reading the game.

Though the pass looked simple from Palmer, its because his first touch is nearly always perfect, then his head is always up looking forward, then his reaction time to make the pass is minimal, then his accuracy and weight of pass is excellent. He has a set of skills that no other England player has.

Plainly, it is true to say Gareth changed the game by bringing on Palmer and Watkins, but it is also true that Koeman changed his game at half time, and any other manager of quality would have watched how Netherlands dominated that 2nd half, and reacted before 60 minutes, not after 80 minutes. One thing I think we can all agree on is that Gareth Southgate is a very lucky manager for England. That Kane penalty was a disgrace of a decision.

Southgate certainly seems too reactionary, maybe he was waiting for the Dutch to switch up before making the counter changes, it certainly worked in the end, but he's definitely had his luck this tournament. The decision from the Ref initially was bad or overturning the initial decision was a "disgrace"?? Because anywhere else on the pitch studs up and missing the ball is a foul, why is it any different in the box?

The reason England outplayed the Netherlands in the first half was the way Netherlands played 442 with only two CMS similar to England having 2 CMS as well, but Foden dropping back made England outnumber Netherlands in the first half, and the Netherlands did take control of the game after subbing depay for veerman In my opinion, England will suffer against Spain in the final because of the Spanish midfielders

Spain have lost Pedri though, Rodri is obviously immense but luckily everyone on the England team has plenty of experience playing with/against him (unlike all of Spain’s previous opponents) and stand a better chance of dealing with it than most. There’s a resilience and fighting spirit in this team that there hasn’t been before and anything can happen. One thing that does worry me is that Spain are one of the dirtiest teams in the tournament and make a lot of tactical fouls, which England often struggle to deal with. Even when we get the free kicks, we lose a lot by having our flow interrupted. The Spanish will definitely be pulling out all those tricks at the weekend and will likely get away with it. So we’ll have to play fast and play brave

If I go to kick the ball (whilst in possession of it, not a 50/50) and someone puts their foot in front of mine, that's a foul. The defensive player tried to block the shot, missed and went into Kane. Anywhere else on the pitch that's a foul cause he went in late.

England did look like an entirely different team, as though they somehow woke up from a bad dream. Haven't looked at the comments, but one thing you didn't mention Adam was how much Cody Gakpo was neutralized. He was a non factor, largely due to the 'three-morphing into 5 at the back" with Kyle Walker once again having a very steady typical performance. Finally, like you, I was very impressed with Mainoo's performance. He's really a hybrid 8-6 for now, but could eventually turn into regista type player, modeling his career on guys like Pirlo or Scholes. Barring any sort of career limiting injury I could see him getting 75 plus caps for England or more. He should be a first choice starter for the next two world cup cycles.

Astonishing that we are giving Southgate credit for making the substitution that every armchair pundit was screaming for when he made it later than any manager worth their salt would have. Also, his utter refusal to start palmer and indeed Watkins when they have improved the team vastly every time they have come on only goes to show how woeful his management has been this tournament. If England win it it will be despite him not because of him.

I agree. The subs, when they came, were magically correct. But I was screaming for subs to come on from about the 60th minute. The difference, I think, is that I was looking for defensive subs to prevent the Dutch taking the game over and winning within 90 minutes, which I thought was about to happen. When Southgate brought on Palmer they were attacking subs - to give ENGLAND the best chance of winning within 90. And it worked.

If there is physical contact, the action becomes an offence punishable with a direct free kick or PENALTY KICK.” “In the case of physical contact, the referee should carefully consider the high probability that misconduct has also been committed.” .....don't hate the player hate the game lol
