Hey man, industry working DP here. This video is full of a lot of odd information that isn’t exactly true or accurate. From the sensor of the Alexa 65, to what filmed for IMAX means, to the process of converting digital into film which is primarily used for color and look. For instance, Dune was shot digitally with IMAX in mind, scanned to print, and rescanned back to digital again to achieve color, softness, etc. This whole 18K resolution thing, I’m not really sure what to make of this because firstly the source image is 6K, so scanning to 70mm doesn’t result in 18K. It’s most likely a 4K scan to 70mm. When you shoot on film, you have the option of obtaining your scans back at 1080p, 2K, or 4K because the image captured on film is pure light. It’s a thick negative of information. The resolution of the scanner dictates what you can get back, but if you are capturing a 6K digital image, then that’s the source. Otherwise, if they happen to be making an “18K scan” it’s just upscaling which isn’t the same. Just saying 70mm is three times larger must mean 3x more resolution is just talk. Also the Alexa 65 sensor is 5mm smaller than 70mm print, so the 3x bigger point doesn’t even make sense. Also IMAX and Dolby theaters are shown in 2K and 4K resolutions. You really can’t see differences past 4K. The only reason for 6K and 8.6K sensors is to have the information for VFX, resizing, downsampling, etc. It’s not to show 18K images to blow your mind because like… 18k doesn’t exist. The 70mm scans are still going to be 4K.

100% here, thanks for providing all of this information and clarification. As a huge fan of the IMAX format, and I want it to be seen and shared in more parts of the world in the future, I think there is a clear need for this information to not be misinterpreted and skewed for the case of views

I don't disagree with anything written here. Just one thing to contemplate, and add into the mix of conversation (which may or may not be the case for Dune), is Ai interpolation enhancements. The Creator did exactly that, as the crop was severe with their 32:9 native capture format (16:9 × 2X scopes) output to a final 2.76:1. I forget exactly what Ai enhancer they used, but IMAX acquired an Ai software company recently and they've been using it ever since. So its plausible these resolutions are "artificially" higher (i use that word specifically because Ai interpolates shapes and pixels, and is not just a basic upscaler stretching / blowing up a canvas.) Anyway... food for thought, carry on!

I was scratching my head on this too. And also thinking: what a waste of 70mm film. They should have shot it on film and then they could have scanned it with something close to an 18K scanner, had super hi res digital files to edit and then output it to whatever they wanted. Doing it in the other direction seems silly. If you put a liter of water into a 5 liter bucket, you still only have a liter of water. As for the other person mentioning AI enhancement, I think that would only make a well-filmed clip look worse at this point in time. That software is really only good for restoring old and damaged video.

@@CreatureFeatures3 part of the reason I think they shot the film digitally is they probably wanted to capture as much sound on-set as possible and not have to go through the ADR process. Digital cameras are generally pretty quiet. IMAX film cameras are notoriously loud, like lawn mowers. I know that's at least part of the reason Nolan doesn't do his films in IMAX for 100% of their runtimes.

I am a feature film DOP with extensive VFX supervision experience. A couple of things to clarify, just to avoid misinformation: 1. Only projecting the movie in real 70mm film will give the true IMAX experience. 2. Most IMAX digital projections are downsized 2k or laser 4K version of the original film print. 3. The alexa 65 has a very big sensor, but the resolution is 6.5k. This offers the advantages of a big format sensor when shooting, but to match the 70mm film quality the camera should have a resolution of 18k. Currently impossible. 4. Nobody in the post industry works even in 4K because we don't have yet the technology. The majority of the work is done still in 2K. 5. The digital - film - digital is fine to achieve a specific, more organic, look. There is no advantage resolution wise, as the source simply doesn't have the necessary details. 6. The biggest visual difference when shooting a large format is the DOF and the brightness. The resolution, given the technical limitations we still have, is almost not relevant.

Digital to film back to digital isn't any new, but it's done very well here. I would recommend the short film Curfew that won an Oscar, in which they shot with a 4K RED camera and transferred to 35mm to achieve the "film" look, back to digital for grading. It's probably one of the most impressive conversion I've seen.

As far as I understand based on my research around Dune 2 (Which was Excellent)... The marketing said "Filmed for IMAX" not "Filmed on IMAX celluloid film stock". I would like to make the clarification that the Large Format Arri Alexa LF, mini LF and Alexa 65 are all considered digital IMAX cameras. Its wasn't really deceptive. Oppenheimer and other Nolan films had just brought back the focus on celluloid IMAX film cameras manufactured by IMAX and Kodak, and people must have assumed they meant the same thing since it was such a huge marketing tactic for Oppenheimer. IMAX is a format, not just a camera, and its not exclusive to IMAX film celluloid. Yes, again the hype around Oppenhiemer was the fact that 70mm celluloid was going to create a field of view that was unmatched in digital, but the Alexa 65 is close to that having stitched 3 full-frame sensors together to make a massive digital filmback with a huge field of view. The process of scanning it onto 70mm probably did finish off the amazing look that this movie carried with it and am so very impressed with Denis Villeneuve! If I am wrong about something or made a mistake I would lover to learn more. I love this industry and the innovation and creativity that comes from it!

0:40 FWIW IMAX had a partnership going on with Arri with their 65mm camera. Most of it is still clearly the Arri 65. But it did have some modifications to it which is why they can still call it an IMAX camera. They had this partnership with the original Alexa as well. But yeah, image quality wise, it was 100% Arri.

Dune always crushed Starwars, even back in the day. The detail, complexity, and scale of dune is on another level. Starwars has done some of the things I mentioned about Dune, but nowhere near the level of detail across the story line. I will say Starwars is great and I love it very much. I've been a Dune and Starwars fan forever. But Dune just hits different. Read the books written by Frank Herbert.

it's unrelated to resolution. 3d glasses or not you have to show 2 different images to the 2 eyes. human eyes are a few cm's apart and point to different direction by a few degrees. your brain will feel 3D if your two eyes perceive two different images according to this "biocamera" physical location difference. :) you need 2 cameras or you can generate 2 images in post if you shot with one camera. this takes lots of work (more money!!) and ofc it's worse than shooting with 2 cameras. of course extra resolution can help with additional data if you turn a one camera footage into stereo in post.

I think this is what's wrong nowadays: people decide if the movie is good based on other opinions, technical information and heresay, not on their subjective experience. I don't say Dune II isn't good, I haven't seen it yet. I liked the first one but there was a lot of stuff that could have made it better, especially world building as the whole Arrakis felt like it was just devout of people, devout of life - even in the places where people lived.

Isn't this a bit of overkill? I mean, who is going to benefit from an 18K video image? It's sort of like ordering a 12 foot tall, 400 pound birthday cake, or building a car that'll go 300 miles an hour. A video on a 65 inch 4K screen at 2160, should be close to the limit of what human vision can resolve. That is unless you're shooting this movie for the benefit of a bunch of Eagles. :-) Over the years aren't most movies actually seen on television screens at home? And aside from the ATSC 3.0. format most television is broadcast in 1080p. and probably will be for a number of years. And if this is about making content for viewers for 2050 by then there may be an entirely new technology that would replace this altogether.
