Yea but some sonic games still had him be too goofy, so goofy it felt just so... bruh. Yes I love Eggman being a joker most times but he is still the villain, a villain who is NOT Bowser or equivalent of it, he is a mad scientist bent on global dictatorship and whatever the duck Eggman land is, so he should have his menacing moments too. The only moments where he seems liek he means business in modern Sonic games is the beginning of Unleashed, which they abandon too soon and maybe Sonic Colors. I agree Eggman is a joke but we want occasional *He means BUSINESS and he is SERIOUS about it* moments to keep it balanced too.

I think the best versions of Eggman have this balance between goofy and menacing. That being said, versions that go more into either direction aren't bad, they're good for their own reason. I thing one of the reasons Eggman nailed the tone transition so well is because of Mike Pollock's performance. It gives the character a level of charisma that makes the comedy work a lot better, specially in Sonic Boom.

The only funny Eggman moment I remember in Sonic '06 was when Shadow broke into his lair through the ceiling and he responded by saying "Wouldn't the door have been easier?" that and the falling part you mentioned were the two parts where he really felt like his usual self.

I find Adventure 2 Eggman to probably be my favorite, I just prefer a serious Eggman, not a Satam type but just menacing enough My fav goofy type Eggman is probably in Unleashed, i find him the best in that game

Kinda the reason I dislike pre-SGW Archie Eggman, they tried *way too hard* to make him super mindlessly evil and edgy. I did like the SatAM type for what he was but pre-SGW Eggman was so laughably evil I ironically couldn't take him seriously, he pretty much did lack that "Eggman charm" and came across as very 2 dimensional. SA2's Eggman was the perfect balance between Goof and Menace, Unleashed Eggman was entertaining but he leaned way too much into clown territory and kinda started the modern era of "Clown Eggman". Jim Carrey's depiction of the character seems to have brought back the excellent goof/menace balance that makes the character so great.

I don't think Lost World Eggman was out of place, he gets serious when he needs to...simple as that. He was fed up with being fucked over by NOW the Zeti. I really like that side of him, as he destroyed the ice TV thing.

One reason why i love robotnik so much is because of how funny he is. Seriously. Whenever he does something that's supposed to be funny. It's actually so funny.

I like for Eggman to have a backup plan for the backup plan in case Sonic foils both the main and first backup plan. Or at least have the character use his intelligence more to guess Sonic's patterns a bit to keep him off balance.

I think the best way to write Eggman is probably a mix of goofy and serious. Serious enough that you can recognize him as a threat. And goofy enough that he still fits the tone of the story.

Eggman has always been a comedic villain with serious moments.

My favourite version of Eggman is in the IDW comics, he is still kinda goofy and lazy but he's incredibly competent and a gigantic threat. To the point where, when he shifts sides to help out the good guys, he instantly solves all their problems. It's also cool to see how the world revolves around him, there are intire factions that survive on scraps of his technology, everyone in the world is either with him or against him, there are no neutral factions, because his enormous presence is impossible to ignore. What's also cool is the whole memory lost thing, we saw a good side of him and even he can't deny, and he seems to question his moral compass from time to time, hinting that maybe, one day, we'll have a good eggman.

this is all well and good, and from his inception eggman has been both goofy and menacing; but we can all agree that sonic *treating* eggman like a *joke* is *not* endearing at all. i think that's the issue here. i feel like eggman's performance is top notch; but it's when pontaff breaks the fourth wall for "haha he never wins! baldy mcnosehair! please laugh!" reasons; having him winge about never beating sonic and have him get absolutely pushed aside by characters who roll their eyes whenever he does something, that people are complaining. i *loved* eggman in sonic unleashed, and while the story faded to black during the mid-section, he was an absolute joy to see on screen. what made him even better than the ones in lost world, colours, generations and-- every incarnation after the fact, was that sonic *reciprocated* ; he'd roll his eyes at eggmanland and his silly antics, but the moment he saw the egg beetle, he put on a game face and got ready to duel; he doesn't treat eggman like some disgruntled boomer - but rather a worthy, dangerous foe that could take him out at any moment, while keeping his snark. eggman wasn't enjoyable in 06, because he was too serious; but i argue that making the cast call him 'mcnosehair' every 5 seconds is no better; in fact, infinitely worse. i'd never want another 06 eggman, but i would have that over him being reduced to a meme. if the heroes don't take the story seriously, why should the viewer?

Very well said. If I'm being honest, i found Adventure Eggman to be not that entertaining, and like you said, Eggman works best when there's a balance between sinister-ness and goofiness. Unleashed is probably a good example of this. While he does some crazy evil shit like splitting the planet in multiple pieces and awakening an ancient monster from the Earth's core, he also has some comedic moments like eating a big sandwich and building a fucking theme park for one of the final acts.

Eggman isn’t my favourite characters but I’d say him and sonic are the only characters that without them it wouldn’t be Sonic The Hedgehog. Even Tails, I love him but if he wasn’t in a game I feel like it’s still sonic.

Well, you actually may have a point after all The Sonic Movie actually did go on without Tails yet Tails made a cameo appearance at the end credits scene.

Dr. Eggman is a extremely underrated character in the Sonic series, it’s so sad to see Dr. Eggman not getting much love from the Sonic fanbase.

The movie version of Eggman is a pretty good version of the character whose character and personality can be used for the Eggman in the games. In the movie he is sometimes outright narcissistic, serious and evil while sometimes he is hilariously goofy, sarcastic and funny. That's balance, Thanos, That's balance right there...

Eggman even had his goofy moments in the Adventure games. In SA1 he still had very over-the-top lines like "Behold, my floating masterpiece! THE EGG CARRIYAH!" and he still had moments like putting a literal spotlight on himself in one of Gamma's cutscenes. SA2 toned it down a little bit, but he still had some moments, like stomping his foot at one point. And who could forget that time where he just fucking scratched his ass?

A hero’s story is only as good as its villain. And Dr. Robotnik/Eggman holds the key to Sonic’s greatness. Look at the ‘91 original: It’s the story of a man’s attempt to force his will upon nature. He imprisons animals inside robots that look like animals. The Mad Doctor has a God complex; he grew tired of the natural order of things and decided he could do it better. Then comes Sonic the Hedgehog! He’s a lovable rebel from the Animal Kingdom, rising to take back what is theirs. He’s the only thing standing between the evil genius and Möbius in the face of overwhelming odds. I wish Sonic Team spent less time exaggerating his girth and mustache. Spend more time exploring the diabolical mind ticking away behind it. We need animals fleeing for their lives and habitats destroyed. We should feel dread as Sonic goes toe-to-toe with the Doctor’s latest invention. Every boss should be a Death Egg!

I think that Eggman's rage towards the Zeti in Lost World makes sense. The worst Sonic ever does is stop his current plan, at the end of the day, he can go right back to his Empire and start again. But the Zeti have taken EVERYTHING from him at this point, he doesn't have his Empire, he doesn't have his tools or his lab. If he doesn't stop the Zeti, he's done, and unlike his scraps with Sonic, if he loses here, he's down and out for a LONG time, if not for good. So he's taking the situation very seriously.

While I've always personally preferred Knuckles, Shadow, and Amy, I do think objectively speaking Dr. Eggman is the greatest of all Sonic characters! I'm glad they've kept Mike as long as they have (since X I believe), he has the perfect delivery of an insane and funny antagonist while remaining a competent threat!

I thought Robotnik from the genesis era was serious and intimidating. In sonic 3D blast (not my favorite) the boss fight music with his deep laughter always made the fight more intense for me. Also. in S3&K he gave some pretty good boss fights. And the last mech... was pretty intimidating (except for the flaming "snot rocket").

I can't completely agree. Eggman's character was always about balance of his comedic and villainous traits. From the early Genesis days he was goofy looking guy who turned animals into robots, was burning down jungles and turning entire landscapes into horrifying mechanical dystopia. Despite popular belief Eggman had many comedic moments in his "serious" versions like SatAM or Sonic adventure 1 and 2. He had many, many comedic moments and lines in those games and series. The only time where Eggman was truly comedic villain is Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog but it's only because it was a comedic show where EVERYTHING was goofy, over the top and comical. There are many comedic Star Wars series where Darth Vader is comedic over the top villain but you can't say that Vader is great as inconsistent villain. Back to Eggman after SA2 he was a bit toned down and they were doing weird (and usualy boring) things with him like you mentioned in 06. But then the games from Colors onward they started making him incompetent, goofy and pathetic. His own robots criticize him and he is constantly mocked by Sonic. Even in AoStH he got more respect from his machines and even at certain points Sonic himself and he was a real threat in the goofy setting. I agree that Eggman is still one of the best Sonic characters because even in Colors-Lost World he managed to be the funniest, most interesting and most well-written and consistent character. But with Eggman balance is the key as well as the setting. Sonic Boom is a comedic show so once again I don't see a problem with Eggman being a more comedic villain but again even in Boom he is balanced. He is butt of the jokes as often as he is the one making jokes. And in games Eggman being butt of a joke was something very rare in the 1991-2008 era and became frequent in 2010-2020 era (except other media like IDW comics and Sonic movie where he is once again balanced) And that's I think is the problem that people have with the modern Eggman. When they say they miss more serious Eggman they mean Eggman being treated more seriously and not as a meta-jokes vessel that is bumbling in every way.

The problem with 2010s Eggman isn't that he's goofy or incompetent at all, but that he's NOTHING BUT goofy and incompetent. It used to be that Sonic and his friends legitimately struggled with Eggman even at Eggman's most clownish. Now Sonic (mostly) alone can trample him. And he makes loopier mistakes than ever. He's now a total bumbler. And the 2010s games ARE officially intended to be a continuation of the original game mainline from the start of the series up to the end of the 2000s, so you can't use "alternate canon" as a technically official excuse. Morally official, certainly.

I have huge respect for Dr. Eggman and he is my personal favorite villain of all time. He brings the fight to you in almost every zone in the all the Sonic games and he just doesn't wait for you to arrive, at the very end of the game. That's quite admirable. Throughout his interpretation especially in the Lost World, he did save both Tails and Sonic willingly even though, it was helping him to get back on top but still, he did some good deeds yet, he still have plenty of evil moments throughout. Besides, he also gets the best music in every Sonic game and that counts more points for me.

ok nice and all but the best intepretation of eggman is in sonic unleashed , in this game he is literaly the perfectly ballanced as all this should be version of the more lighthearted and the more serious eggman he is at the same time a super menacing villain who completes some of his ultimate goals and at the same time a complete goofball with a lot of his incopetancy coming mainly through slapstick humor and not from the so cringy i want to die punchlines and dr doofenshmirtz type cheezy lines of the 2010s era

Consistent? I have to strongly disagree. After the Adventure series...he took a 360. He was a force to be reckoned with. He was intelligent and was written with respect. Now he is a joke who is used for cheap laughs and not even Sonic finds him remotely threatening. He used to out smart his opponent. Remember Sonic Adventure 2 with Tails and the fake emerald? Yes Eggman can be goofy but it wasn't always overdone and he had seriousness to him. I feel like you are blind if you seriously are defending new Eggman and saying he is the most consistent character. He comes off as pathetic now and a majority of the fans seem to agree. He is clumsy, incompetent and a joke now. Adventure Eggman was the character perfectly balanced.

Sonic X Sonic Forces and Sonic the Hedgehog (2020 movie) Balance the sinister/intimidating, competent Eggman with the more goofy Eggman really well. I like to think that his goofiness and incompetence is just facade to hide a darker side to himself.

I disagree somewhat, there is a factor that Eggman needs to work at least when he's a villain: He needs to be a constant looming threat, it doesn't matter if Sonic humiliates him and makes him trip on a banana peel and his whole spaceship explodes because of it, there still two more he just had already made and even when he's finally beat you still have to collect the chaos emeralds otherwise he hasn't actually been beaten. Even when you have them and beat the secret boss, he's preparing for the next time.
