    Milbank bags are cheap, reusable, washable, and, filter nearly all of the larger sediment. You can then filter or boil the water to make it safe to drink without immedietly clogging your filter. Here in Australia water is rare and when you do find it it's muddy as fuck. I always carry a milbank bag, boiling container like a canteen cup, and filter. I prefer boiling to save the filters longevity for when it's necessary or I cannot start a fire due to bans or other considerations.

    A good cloth pre-filter is really needed to cover a wide range of water quality. It is very old tech and it works.

  • @jeffwells641
    @jeffwells641 Жыл бұрын

    If you need to use visibly dirty water you should pre-filter it. You can basically just run it through a canvas sack, or there's a product called the Brown Bag Filter (which is just a canvas sack oriented for filtration). This will remove most the very large particulates that will clog a finer filter like a Sawyer, Lifestraw or Grail. There are other techniques, like digging a hole 5-15 feet away from standing water and letting the water filter into the hole. You need to flush the hole several times by letting it fill and then emptying it, but if done correctly the water that fills the hole will eventually become clear, and this can then be filtered or boiled for consumption.

  • @jeffwells641

    Жыл бұрын

    @@christiancasaverdepertica1802 A t-shirt will only filter the very largest debris - it's still going to come out very brown, with lots of particles left to clog your finer filter. It would be better than nothing, but the pre filter bags are made of a right canvas weave that swells when wet, which filters small enough particles for the water to come out noticeably clearer. You can then run the water through a fine filter and you're only clogging the filter with particles that only that filter could filter anyway. Also using a shirt wastes a shirt.

    Another thing People should know that I didn’t think of at first is, sawyer, life straw etc only filter out bacteria and big particles, which isn’t bad but they don’t filter out heavy metals or viruses, so lead, arsenic etc will remain. The only portable filter I know of that will remove all of it is “zero water” the filters can’t be backwashed or used as much but they get everything out. One filter can do up to 15-20 gallons or needs changing after two months due to bacterial growth. But if you ran out of those then having a sawyer will be better then nothing because some of those bacteria that they filter can kill you fast. Heavy metals will cause damage in the long term such as cancer or neurological problems

    Yep. The best ways are overlooked sometimes by people who bought the most expensive thing made and expect miracles. Sock, shirt, bandana or even moss, whatever you can use to get the biggest particles out will not only work better, but your main filter will last a lot longer. I'm in Florida, so I have more salt/brackish water than fresh to deal with. Built a mini still from a stainless canteen and copper tubing. I boil it and filter after with my Mini Sawyer. Works great.

So probably only until most of the solids are gone, and the water is desinfected.
