Milbank bags are cheap, reusable, washable, and, filter nearly all of the larger sediment. You can then filter or boil the water to make it safe to drink without immedietly clogging your filter. Here in Australia water is rare and when you do find it it's muddy as fuck. I always carry a milbank bag, boiling container like a canteen cup, and filter. I prefer boiling to save the filters longevity for when it's necessary or I cannot start a fire due to bans or other considerations.

You are 1000% correct. Thank you for telling the truth.
A good cloth pre-filter is really needed to cover a wide range of water quality. It is very old tech and it works.
If you need to use visibly dirty water you should pre-filter it. You can basically just run it through a canvas sack, or there's a product called the Brown Bag Filter (which is just a canvas sack oriented for filtration). This will remove most the very large particulates that will clog a finer filter like a Sawyer, Lifestraw or Grail. There are other techniques, like digging a hole 5-15 feet away from standing water and letting the water filter into the hole. You need to flush the hole several times by letting it fill and then emptying it, but if done correctly the water that fills the hole will eventually become clear, and this can then be filtered or boiled for consumption.

Question: is there any reason you couldn't use just a normal t-shirt for a filter?
@jeffwells641
Жыл бұрын
@@christiancasaverdepertica1802 A t-shirt will only filter the very largest debris - it's still going to come out very brown, with lots of particles left to clog your finer filter. It would be better than nothing, but the pre filter bags are made of a right canvas weave that swells when wet, which filters small enough particles for the water to come out noticeably clearer. You can then run the water through a fine filter and you're only clogging the filter with particles that only that filter could filter anyway. Also using a shirt wastes a shirt.
“Das a donkey” omg I love him
This is very informative and well illustrated by letting all heavy particles settle to the bottom. Most of those survival filters adverize to the average person who thinks there is going to be a flowing stream in every survival situation.
I think that things used in more extreme cases, then later become more accessible to a wider market, is proof that it works and needs to be a commodity. First Aid kits weren't always a household item once upon a time.

Yeah I’ve been thinking about this video bro oh my God I had to come back to your comment😂😂🤣🤣
You know I really appreciate him not insulting the people who suggested the other equipment and instead simply giving reasoning as to why it's better to do this instead. Usually when I see a video like this, the author calls the opposing argument stupid or idiots or something, and this is a really nice change of pace.
I once worked in a water analysis lab. We often had to process field samples through a nano-fiber filter to remove impurities. These filters clogged so, so often and there was so much resistance pushing water through them we had to use vices to depress the plungers.
As a person with limited income, knowing how to survive with the miraculous technology we have today, knowing how to simply get clean water from nature is a godsend. Being able to sustain yourself without relying on cities and municipal infrastructure to give you the necessities is a wonderful thing, and this video taught me a small way to do just that. Water is life.
Another thing People should know that I didn’t think of at first is, sawyer, life straw etc only filter out bacteria and big particles, which isn’t bad but they don’t filter out heavy metals or viruses, so lead, arsenic etc will remain. The only portable filter I know of that will remove all of it is “zero water” the filters can’t be backwashed or used as much but they get everything out. One filter can do up to 15-20 gallons or needs changing after two months due to bacterial growth. But if you ran out of those then having a sawyer will be better then nothing because some of those bacteria that they filter can kill you fast. Heavy metals will cause damage in the long term such as cancer or neurological problems

Sock, shirt, bandana or even moss, whatever you can use to get the biggest particles out will not only work better, but your main filter will last a lot longer. If you guys havent seen the video of him reviewing this item id highly suggest it. Its pretty crazy to see just how dirty the water was and to see it go to clean drinkable water in just a few treatments. Id prefer this over any kind of straw or filter in HARSH situations.
Thank you for this solid advice 💖🙏💯
People with no experience love to talk about things they don't know anything about. I've come to the conclusion that people just like to hear themselves talk. Keep on teaching us, bud! 👌
Alot of people also don't realise you still have to boil the water afterwards, those straws and stuff are the equivalent of getting a water filter cause your on a boil notice. Its only gonna deal with half the problem
This has to be the most practical and useful video on KZread. On top of water filters, I learned what a donkey sounds like.
the screaming donkey made me cackle and i regret nothing
The guys that give “advice” cause they think you’re doing it wrong are the type of people to think camping means bringing a couch, tv, and an air conditioner. The same people that have bug out bags with a couple clothes and grandpas old hatchet and call it “good” and the same people that think the best place to go to first during disaster situations is a grocery store.
"thats a donkey" 💀

Never cease to amaze me that everyone knows better then the man that Ives there
and a bag like that is awesome. it gets the sedement out fairly well and then a filtration system can handle it far better.

What store are you shopping out in the wilderness I wonder
If you can’t find clean clear and moving folks filter first with sock, play sand, then gravel, charcoal, clean small thin broke wood cotton then a coned nylon. After than filer through your (all the products he just mentioned) and it will help protect your purchase
How many times can you re-treat the same water before the purifying chemicals become harmful?

I have no idea. I know that the 2 chemicals these packs contain are ferric sulfate and calcium hypochlorite the former is a glocculant, which causes these particles to form flocks, so it gets discarded along with the dirt.the latter is a desinfectant. So probably only until most of the solids are gone, and the water is desinfected.
"Thats a donkey." That my sir. Is a "SQUIRREL!" Moment.
Life straws are super hard to get going, but once you do they work brilliantly. In terms of immediate ability to drink water, it can’t really be beat. Helped me a bunch in the Philippines.
‘that’s a donkey’ *cut* Comedy gold
That donkey startled him before his brain recognized it was a donkey and not Bigfoot.
