I remember this show it always on the TV in the summer holidays

Brilliant thoughtful advice! Reminded me of the “why don’t you theme tune”. A UK kids TV program where the theme song was literally switch off your TV set and do something less boring instead. Always loved the irony!

Nowadays, it's the phones that kids are glued to these days. Like when kids are crossing the road too glued to their phones to see if a car comes. It's like 'Why don't you just switch off your phone and do something less dangerous instead?' 😉

I live next to where this was filmed. So bizarre looking back seeing how much has and hasn't changed

I remember those particular episodes vaguely but it is because of these shows that I go out and do something less boring instead. I miss those days of tv. I used to wake up and watch Swap Shop, then debating whether I should watch Grandstand or World Of Sport, settling with World Of Sport watching Giant Haystacks, Big Daddy, Kendo Nagasaki and the rest of the legends. Good days

The idea being that if you had to watch tv, at least let that tv programme show you all the things you could be doing that were nothing to do with the tv.

Excellent marketing choice of song if us 45s+ who remember it could be arsed to venture into the "great outdoors" for any other reason than to top up on Stella 😄

I am 53 and remember watching Why Don't You when growing up. And I am teetotal, so topping up on Stella Artois (a relative of Rene and Edith) doesn't apply!!!

Played this to my kids. They didn't get the message either.

Wish I could find the 1 episode where they made burgers from cornbeef

It's actually a really good tune, but the kids singing over the top of it repulsed me at the time. It was the one show that I just couldn't handle as it was presented by kids! And the theme tune was a call to turn the TV off in our house. I certainly remember summer holidays and sitting in front of the TV for as long as practically possible. I liked the re-runs of the black and whites, superman, flash gordon, zorro etc. And some other afternoon films. I still remember there being only three TV channels in the UK, and ITV didn't wake up until about 10am. Kids these days, don't know how good they have it. They can just KZread a project! And have a practically limitless choice of TV. Having said that you'll get more value and brain nourishment reading for five minutes than watching TV for three hours. TV turns people into brain dead zombies. But it does chill you out.

here's why. in the late 1970's TV was a new thing, like cell-phones. Instantly, like we have now in 2021 - people are obsessed or addicted. Yes, as you are now. This was a positive reaction to make kids remain as kids but learn at the same time and go out and have fun and learn.

Why dont you not switch off your television set and not go out?
