Makes me remember this quote from a 2014 newspaper article: "The Tory party has previously been accused of pognophobia. Margaret Thatcher reportedly said she ‘wouldn’t tolerate any minister of mine wearing a beard’." It was on the news that the first bearded Tory cabinet minister since 1905 had been appointed. 😅

Another theory is that much like pudginess and pale skin, beards were a sign that you could afford a beard. In a time when OSHA wasn't a thing the people working in the factories were thought to not have beards because of the potential for an extravagant beard to get caught in the machinery. So being well dressed and having a beard said "I have other people making my money" so ofcourse higher social circles and those that wished to imitate them adopted the look. Politicians, doctors, lawyers, academics, artists of high stature, and nobility all had the fact that they wanted to differentiate themselves from those poor drones working in factories. But that's just a hypothesis.
@NicolaW72
4 жыл бұрын
The astonishing point is that at the same time many of those poor drones working in the factories had the same bushy beards with the same length as the nobility has - there´re many picture´s left over from the working class of the 19th century and many picture´s from simple soldiers e.g. from the Civil War in America - and they usually show that the workers had the same huge bushy beards than the company-owners and that the simple soldiers had the same huge bushy beards as the generals, often really down to their belly buttons. They all celebrated their masculinity in the same way. And later it was the same with shaving their faces: Look at all the picture´s from simple soldiers of the First World War: You´re looking always into shaved faces or sometimes in a remaining small moustache beyond the fact that the living conditions of that soldiers were definetly not better than the living conditions of the soldiers of the American Civil War - and the same shaved faces you will see if you´re looking at picture´s of generals of the First World War. Btw.: This shows that the soldiers of the Civil War didn´t walked around with such strange beards because they had no occasions to shave their faces but that they walked around with such strange beards because they wanted to walk around with such strange beards and that they let them grow in such a strange way fully volontarily. That is really the astonishing point because in other culture aspects it just worked as you´ve written it: Pale skin was in pre-modern times a sign that you can sit at home in the shadow and that you´ve not to work as a peasant on the field were you got a dark brown skin from all the sun. When the common work places shifted more and more from the rural countryside into the urban fabrications and poor people started to house in gigantic urban slums with few sunlight, the "brown-is-beautiful"-wave started: With a dark brown skin the upper class was able to show that they were able to enjoy a better life. But with the beards it obviously doesn´t works this way. For whatever reason.

Hi JJ WW1 had a significant impact on the beard. It was a requirement for nearly all soldiers to be clean shaven - with some officers being allowed to rock a mustache. This was the case for the US military, ANZACS, British (until I think 1916 then it was clean shaven), and Canada. It was the first time many of these countries imposed the requirement. Also many of these countries had conscription at the time forcing large numbers of men to essentially shave all at the same time and essentially create a trend. My grandfather was British and he mentioned to me it was quite common for non conscripted men to follow these trends as a means to show they were prepared to fight. This probably helped solidify the clean shaven trend and moved people away from the beard. Cheers J

I think personally the appearance of beards is relatively benign. I just don’t understand the way anybody plays appearance politics or what a beard is supposed to say in our time other than someone’s personal decision
11:03 Interesting that Justin Trudeau became the first bearded prime minister of Canada in 120 years.
You mentioned how one of the theories of why beards were popularized was due to the “manly” soldiers coming back from war with large beards because they couldn’t shave in the field. The argument for the clean-shaven look is actually the exact same: that soldiers had to be clean shaven during WW1 to put on their gas masks. Given the scale of this war and the number of men who fought and came home, I wouldn’t entirely discount this theory. Approximately 630,000 Canadians joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and 424,000 served overseas, out of a population of 8,000,000, that represents ~7.9% and 5.3% of the Canadian population, almost all of which were men. Assuming half the population were men and that they were all required to be clean shaven, this would mean that between 10.6% and 15.8% of Canadian men would have been clean shaven by default at wars end.

Seriously, I haven't laughed this hard in the longest time! Wonderful video!
A couple of years back Channel 4 in the UK put out a reality TV show called 'The 1900 House' where a family lived life as people did in the Victorian era. In that show the father ended up growing facial hair because he said he wasn't comfortable using a straight razor, of that era, so perhaps part of the fashion associated with facial hair was to do with people who weren't keen on cutting themselves whilst shaving. There was also another episode set in early 1940s Britain during the Blitz and rationing, both are entertaining and definitely worth a watch.
Firstly - I love your content - you are always intelligent, well spoken, fair and entertaining - a balance few strike so well and what help me to enjoy literally anything you do Secondly - When you talked about the beards of soldiers looking more rugged - I remember something about WW1 and how soldiers needed to be shaved in order to effectively wear their gas masks (infamously why the certain Austrian has his trimmed mustache), so perhaps even some of that could have contributed to soldiers returning home shaved (having done that for years of war to avoid a painful death or crippling injury, that plus all the problems like lice in trenches with men) - I want to say I saw other fronts of the war like the Russians or the Ottomans with far more facial hair on their soldiers vs the Western Front. Just a curious thought wanted to throw out there - keep doing what you do!
It would be cool to do a video about Max Aitken Lord Beaverbrook who was a very influential Canadian in the UK who founded newspapers and served in the government in WW2.

The British army had a requirequirement where men had to shave their beard and underlip, but had to have a mustache. This association of the mustache with the military is why the amish have beards and not mustaches. Actually, the British army regulation about facial hairs seems to had been followed pretty well by the officers for all the wars (even doctors but maybe less by the chaplains). If you look at pictures taken in the tranches, most soldiers are without facial hair and some are sporting the mustache. Same for commonwealth forces excepting the Indian forces (for obvious cultural reasons though hairless faces can be seen there too). I don't know about other armies regulations, but the French soldiers were nicknamed the "Poilus" (the hairies) and the mustache seems pretty mandatory and you can see a lot of beards. Maybe some historians had rejected the idea of war helping to cut the bead from fashion, but during WW1, for countries like United Kingdom and France, it's about 20% of their population who were in the army (so likely 40% of their men), forced to shaved for the duration of the conflict. Soldiers were often pretty young, average enlisting age around 23. I'm sure it helps to spread the habit of shaving.
