but what to do in the case when relatives are asking u to join their bs functions and get-togethers, i mean it really consumes your time which u could invest in building something productive so then in that case if say no to them, then obviously relations are going to be affected

Love is a great teacher. love will beget knowledge. However It is not necessary that knowledge begets love.
U cannot just have an attitude wherein u care for only fir tour own righteousness and thinking nothing abouts other and then the next movement u get kind of hurt when people doesnot reciprocate the intention u however deadly kind intention . If u want your right kund of intension has to be reciprocate the be really emphatic know that your responsibility as he said extends beyond just speaking we communicate to bring wellness to the other. We donot communicate to speak the truth .no body communicate to speak the truth there exist nothing like truth to be spoken. The purpose of wellness is to bring wellness and for the welfare of other not truth . That which bring real wellness to the other os the truth nothing else is the truth
