Why Don't Argentina Have Any Black Players?

Спорт

Whilst neighbouring Uruguay and Brazil have had plenty of black footballers, including their greatest players of all time in the forms of Pele and Jose Andrade, the same cannot be said for Argentina.
Despite sharing a similar colonial past to their near neighbours, Argentina's black population is a fraction of the nation's around them, and following a question from a subscriber during the 2018 World Cup, HITC Sevens takes a look at why that is the case.

Most comments haven't watched the full video it seems At around minute 5, it is correctly said that the NT doesn't have black players because the country doesn't have black people, amounting to less than 0.5% of the population, and it is stated that this is not racist in and of itself. But the reason why only 0.5% of our population is not black CAN be traced to racist origins, from the XIX century and the 90s decade alike

Soccer is just short for "Association Football", and the word was invented in Britain. There are a good few different types of football. Thats inaccurate but just slightly, "negro" can be used as a racial slur just as much as it is used as an endearing term, I'm hispanic myself also so I'm not just talking out of my ass when it comes to this stuff, and more often than not I hear people disparagingly talking about anyone with dark skin using such terms as black or negro, moreno or dark skin, prieto or really black, so on and so forth, I even remember some black people from when I was a child who's nicknames were simio and monkey, you also see this culture reflected in households when a parent finds out their white son or daughter is dating a black person, the feeling is not that of embrace but of displeasure or disappointment, you can also see this culture in telenovelas, the protagonists are never black in Hispanic countries, beauty pageants are dominated mostly by white people, there's also under representation of blacks in politics, surely there are more examples of racism in other cultures throughout Latin America but I'll leave there for now, all this to say that we are no different than say the US when it comes to how we view blacks south of the border, sure we're not killing them or denying them their rights, I happen to think blacks get along with whites better in Latin American compared to how they're treated in the US and Europe but it's undeniable that there is a bias and as a result blacks still get mistreated in Latin America 🙋🏻‍♂️

No, I come because I like to see how the outside works sees us. The thing is a bleck person, like really deep black not brown, would be a sight to see in what we call the Interior, we have many brown people descendants of native Americans but in the world they are not considered black. All the black people here mostly had children with whiter people, so we all mixed that's why we are not that white either. In 1813 we abolished slavery for children, he didn't mention that, even before that we didn't have much plantatios because it too cold in the south and in the north there was many people to work already (the natives) in the only region were many black people lived we had a war, and it's not like we sent them to war. The country was dismembered we didn't have any president or higher authority that was really respected so the other provinces didn't want anything to participate on the war. So all those provinces (3 or 4) had to defend themselves and offered freedom to slaves if they participate in the war. That's why many died there, but thet weren't the "front lines" they were all the lines. The yellow fever affected EVEYBODY so we shouldn't considered that a cause the poorer section wasn't just the released slaves (they weren't even the majority) the greater population affected were rhe poor immigrants mostly Italians. This video is misleading, go do a Google search Sarmiento has a statue in the central park, he build schools everywhere and educated us the level of illiteracy fell to 2 %, we were the most educated country in the world at that time. So yes the guy may have been racis, honestly I don't know but it wouldn't have been weird in his time. And remember that at that time Europe was pillaging Africa and the US had segregation.

Longer answer: Yes, there was a larger percentage of black people back on the days of Spanish Colony. It is unclear why it decreased with time. Probably war and epidemics. However, in 1850, Argentine population was roughly of 1,000,000 people. Between 1862 and 1940 6,6 millon inmigrants (mostly white Europeans) came to Argentina. So the incidence of European inmigration was decisive.

Slight correction, Argentina abolished slavery in 1813 not 1853. In 1853 we adopted our first Constitution in which it was set into law that all people born on Argentine soil are free. And whilst the video does its best to summarize the afro-argentine experience, it's quite lacking in some areas, as for instance the understanding of race relations in Latin America in general. Let me preface this by saying that in no way am I condoning or agreeing with these statements, but they're based on the historical understanding of the time periods. Argentina, or at that time the Vice Royalty of the River Plate, was more of a backwoods hold out for the Spanish crown to hold off against French and British interests in the region. The vast majority of the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade ended up going to Brazil (whom as a note only abolished slavery in 1888), and Argentina received a small fraction of it. I do wholeheartedly agree that after manumission was declared in 1813 the vast majority of black slaves in Argentina (or the United Provinces in that time period) were forcibly conscripted into the Liberation Armies as front-line cannon-fodder soldiers, and that's where you see the biggest dip in the Afro-Argentine population, followed by the War of the Triple Alliance. Compound to this the unfortunate decision to exterminate the Southern native tribes in what was known as the Desert Campaign of the 1860's, and the influx of European immigration that had it's peak from around the 1870's to the 1890's, and you have the perfect conditions for developing a nation that would identify strongly with its European roots than other nations in Latin America. One thing that is important to note is that the concept or race in Argentina was secondary to that of social class: call it a leftover of the Catholic Spanish way of running things, it is why the color of your skin in Argentina plays a secondary role to your place in society. And while it's true that later on Argentina had the typical view of race mainly shaped by the ideas of 19th Century Europe, there was a more sui generis approach to our understanding of it. This is why we don't distinguish our European ancestry by regionality: Spanish, Italian, German, French, Russian, Turkish, we don't have the anglocentric concept of hyphenating our national identity (ie: African-American, Italian-American, etc) and thus our views on what you would call race-relations (if you can even call it that) have a different approach than they do in the anglocentric nations. Hope this cleared up some misconceptions and I welcome any questions or discussions. :)

It is surprising to see how many north American you tubers are suddenly so interested in knowing why there are no black players in the Argentinian football team. As it is normal north Americans know so little of the history of other American countries (hardly locating in a map Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires and still more difficult know if are located in Argentina or Brazil) that they try to apply to these countries the guidelines and parameters of USA history. 1) Argentina was located in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata .. around 4 million kmt sq. (sorry I count in kmt not miles )with no plantation economy (such as sugar or cotton) or mineral resources that needed huge slave labour. So the number of afro americans that went to Argentina was only a fraction of those going to Brazil or USA 2)Those slave mostly dedicated to domestic labour and accounted for 20/30 % of a total population of 400000 people and were freed in 1813 (3 years before the formal declaration of the independence) The constitution of 1853 only ratify the declaration of 1813 3) never existed legal discrimination against afro American’s 4) the Population increase was very small until 1875 when started the huge south European immigration that by 1910 had reached over 4 million people. These immigrants mainly poor peasants of southern Europe did not have any problem to mix with the Aboriginals population and the afro Americans ( no more then than 2/3% of the population) creating a mix ethnicity that represents today 60% of whole population and that vulgarlyar is refered to as negros 5) There has been no genocide of afro people and certainly some particular genocides of Patagonian aborigines mainly carry out by Welsh colonists. 6)So no wonder that there are no Afro-American’s players in the football team since today they represent much less than 1% of the population. However, do you have More than 50% of the so called negros which are Europeans mixed with indigenous or African blood 7) Of course in Argentina specially among the middle European elite class are stereotypes bordering racist attitude , but has nothing to do with the stratospheric explanations of the you tubers . More over the nick name Negro in the majority of cases does not imply a racist stigma. Many families have relatives with darker skin that are called NEGRO OR NEGRITO in an affectionate way. THINGS MAY LOOK THE SAME BUT ARE NOT THE SAME

You are wrong about the term "negro" it can mean a huge number of things depending on the context. it can have negative intent but most of the time it does not... my family in Argentina is half Arab and half Italian and they use this word all the time without any negative intentions. saying "mi negro" a lot of the time means my friend and is a very loosely used term almost like saying "dude" in the US. not only Argentinians use the word in this way. Uruguayans, Chileans, Paraguayans etc. use it as well.

It's the same case for Croatia. Some people attacked us online claiming that we were racist for not having black people in our squad. I'm a native Croat and I spent a long time in the major centers of Croatia and I've only seen three black Croatian citizens and none of them were native Croats (born in Croatia). And we had only one non-native Croat in our squad, Eduardo da Silva, who was Brazilian.

I can even go as far as to say that this video, full of lies and misinformation, is an attack to Argentines, as it blatantly lies about the reality of the country, hides information, and takes wrong assumptions as facts, like comparing the background of Brazil, when the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarve used to have colonies in Africa, to that of Hispanic America, when no country there or even Spain had access to African slaves, because Spain only had small colonies in Northern Africa (and even smaller when compared to the size of those of Brazil/Portugal, France, England and even Belgium), populated by Arabic people, that had even invaded Spain itself in the past

If the video was objective, it would be just informative, but comparing the past of Argentina, a Spain colony to that of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarve, that had its own colonies in Africa, is just purposefully lying to hide reality: Spain did not have colonies in Black Africa, that's the main reason why Hispanic America doesn't have much black people. Comparing any Hispanic American country's history to that of Brazil, which again had its own colonies in Africa, I just lies for idiots to buy. If those lies are aimed to harming those countries' images, they are an attack. I can see the same happening to Croatia

Argentina's population was 36% black in 1816 when it became a nation. Shortly after independence, the white population went on an ethnic cleansing of the black population. While a large number of blacks were killed, another portion of the population got married into white families in order to acquire higher social privilege. Even though a lot of Argentine may not look black or identify as black, a large number of them have african dna in their blood. Complexion and ethinicity are not the same.

A lot of the data in this video is misleading or just plain wrong.... Argentina wasn't a "major part of the slave trade", there was barely anyone living in the Rio de la Plata back then. It was a forgotten backwater of the Spanish Empire. Sure, 30% of the population was black in 1810, but the population back then was only 500 thousand people! Add in the fact that 7.5 million European immigrants arrived in the following century (second largest recipient after the USA), and the fact that slavery and the slave trade were abolished very early (1812), and you can see how the black population of 150 thousand (30% of 500k) got dilluted due to that huge migratory wave of Europeans. 0.4% of the population today identifies as black, and genetic testing shows 7% has some black genes (such as that goalkeeper you mention), so it's all perfectly explained in the current demographics of the country. It's true that black people died in disproportionate numbers during the war in Paraguay, and that they were discriminated against during the 19th century, but to talk about genocide here is nonsense. You can bet that if there had been an organized ethnic cleansing campaign there would be historical evidence for it. A lot of this simply stems from not understanding statistics and Latin American demographics. 30% sounds like a lot, but it was a very tiny population that got overwhelmed by immigrants. There was no "one drop rule" here as in the British colonies. And again, 150 thousand black people got 7.5 million european immgrants dumped on top of them. So that explains how those genes got dilluted. Finally, that "97% identifies as white" is bullshit, that's some CIA estimate, Argentina doesn't keep tabs on the race of each citizen like you do in America or Britain. AFAIK, the national census doesn't ask about your race. Edit: Also, the first Argentine President Bernardino Rivadavia was part Black. 200 years before Obama. Seems like a big fact you ommited because it doesn't fit the narrative you are trying to create.
