Efra's hypothesis actually has basis. Majority of Philippine languages utilize a lot of open vowel sound, thus we are naturally inclined to develop resonance. Our love for singing especially power ballads, further develops this by emulating foreign power belters. I don't think we are born singers, but our culture molds us to be one. We are "pushed" to sing at an early age.

I remember my parents bought a cds full of different songs and a microphone. I was 5 or 6 that time and they let me sing. And now when i and my friends or cousins do karaoke i cant stop singing, i cant put down the microphone. Also singing is the way Filipinos release their stress.

Fun Fact: Philippines did have a concert for Anne Curtis; someone known for being tone deaf and everyone was rooting for her from the very beginning, and luckily, we were able to see her improve one song at a time. That’s how we encourage people to sing even those who are tone deaf.

The Filipinos learn how to sing by active listening to the various tones, textures, rasps, pitches, timbre, breathing, diction, enunciation, volume, duration, staccato/legato, projection, etc., because of the multiple languages in the country and exposure to multiple eras of music playing on the radio or on TV. So they learn how to listen well then they try to copy someone who sings very well. Every child is exposed at an early age to singing during family gatherings, church choir practice, glee clubs, school parties and singing contests, town pageants and celebrations. Then the young child who has an obvious singing, dancing, acting, or declamation talent is encouraged to perform before an audience of friends and family members. That gets them over their stage fright quickly so they won't hold back or are never intimidated by performing before a live audience or even a recording. Then they can practice on their own or be coached by the veterans. Also, for the lower-income class people, it's their ticket out of poverty if they can use it to earn a living. Check out how many Filipino singers and bands are booked in international hotels, music lounges, resorts, and cruise ships.

Waleska you were right about the tribal people having this culture of singing. The reason for this is that before the colonization very few tribes and ethnic groups have a strong written culture so the best way for them to pass on ordinary instructions, history, religious practices, social interactions, etc., is through oral tradition and by adding rhythm and tune. When the Spanish colonizers came the different tribes and ethnic groups have used singing to ease their suffering from slavery and abuse. Plus there of course there are other intervening factors like what was mentioned by Banzee TV that because there are 120 to 175 languages plus other dialects it played a big role in how different tribes interact with each other using each others using sounds and texture of languages.

My conjecture on why Philippines is attuned to music is because of diverse ethnic groups and dialects. And these dialects are very distinct in sound and texture from each other. So maybe, Filipinos evolved/developed to have a keen sense of hearing in order to be able to distinguished from which ethnic group other people belongs. This skill may very well determine one's safety and prosperity. Keep in mind that pre-colonial Filipinos are highly tribalistic in nature.

if you're linking language diversity to singing , that doesn't make sense..indonesia has more than the philippines.. only 20% of their population actually speaks the national language... papua new guinea has the most.. and there are more... but all of those countries are not as good as the PH... the more logical reason is, it is in the culture if you grew up on a place where singing is part of the culture and where a child is expose to singing at an early age, you'll probably grow good at it... same with dancing and everything...

I've heard that Filipinos have a keen sense of 'oido,' the talent to hear speech & music keenly as to accent, pitch, tone, etc. which is why Filipinos can easily copy accents of people from anywhere in the world & copy the singing style of popular singers when singing their songs. Put us in New York, England or Australia & we'll soon be speaking English with their respective accents.

Farmers sings during harvest season too! In the Philippines, folk songs such as “Magtanim Ay Di Biro” as sung by Bulilit Singers are taught in schools to illustrate the farmers’ hardships in farming, while “Bahay Kubo” as sung by Lea Salonga is used to educate children on the different local crops. And when it comes to nursery rhymes, “Old MacDonald Had A Farm” as sung by The Countdown Kids seemed to be every child’s favorite. 👩‍🎤💕❤️😁

I believe that is the secret we have. Just singing. Doesn't matter if you're good or not. Having someone in the group that can sing is good, but a group of tone deaf friends enjoying singing is just awesome 😂

You hit the right word "COMFORT" .... Filipino really finds comfort in singing may you be a bad or good singer it doesnt matter in the Philippines as long as you sing in a gathering - they even loves those who are bad singers instead of a good ones (caused the used to it)

We Filipinos are very good supporters from Ms. Universe, Boxing, Singing, etc. We are people who are happy folks that singing seems to help us calm, relax, and escape from any problems even for a moment. Gathering and singing our hearts content is the outlet to feel better.

Thank you Efra and Wakeska. Yes_ historically, early Filipinos show the love for music and dance (by observing birds! for one thing) but WE are so lucky for the SPANISH music influences. In the Philippines, we have been equally blessed with American music influences... I love it that you (Waleska and Efra) recognize and appreciate OUR musical heritage. Salamat.

You know why most Pinoys have beautiful voices? I believed that in one way or the other, our mother and/or our father sing to us when we are still in our mother's womb, or if their voices are not that good enough, they will put music sound on the mom's belly.

you got it right, efra. we turn to singing and music for comfort. at work nowadays, you see most people at work with headphones on, as it makes everyone cope with your daily work stress. i remember once a group manager who was a foreigner got so annoyed at it that he thought he could ban music at work as if he could change the very character and culture of a filipino 😆 needless to say we gave him a week and got right back to listening to music at work 🤣😂🤣

I agree po hehe 😁 I also remember on my high school days, one of my teacher in MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health) used to play chill opm while we're writing very loooonng lectures 😂 At times the whole class end up singging/ jamming especially when it is heartbroken songs of those famous bands at that time 😁 and that is one of my best memories with them 😊 (P.S. We finish writing lectures because we can't leave the room if not hahahah and someone is assign to check it 😅)

I feel you. was once a domestic helper in kuwait and one of the household rules was not to listen to music. Even humming is not allowed. I quit after only 9 months of working there. I cannot survive without music in my life.

I literally just finished watching part 1 and am so happy that I don’t have to wait that long for part 2- lovely reactions as always!

I think one of the reasons why Filipinos sing very well may also be attributed to the language and the way we speak and our intonation. There was this one time I was walking home with a friend and I was on the phone arguing with my brother. After I hung up, my friend looked at me and she said I sounded like I was singing while talking in Tagalog. So maybe the way speak makes us more inclined to singing? 🤔

Singing is very much part of our history and culture. It's true that during the olden time and even now, while the farmers are planting, they sing to enjoy what they're doing. Those that plant tabacco in the north does the same thing. Even in stories told by our grand parents, they tell us about what they did, singing was always a part of it. Even the games that we did when we were kids include singing. In our elementary and high school days, we had a subject in music. It was mostly singing or learning to play an instrument. Then we have inter classroom competition. WE even participate in different local competitions. So yes, it was taught to us at a very early age and I guess it is in our genes. Your reactions are so on the point and helpful. Keep on going.

this amateur singers learned how to sing through listening & constant singing.i mean singing when they're alone.maybe while cleaning the house,washing dishes or taking a bath.they discover techniques on their own w/o even realizing that what they're doing is already a technique.they didnt have to undergo any formal training or basic vocal training,they just learn everything on their own.it is mainly because Filipinos love music.we Filipinos are "MUSIC FREAK"..😂😂😂😂😂

I think Pinoys are family oriented and we have many festivals that promotes hospitality. We invite people to our house. Everytime families come together, singing is part of entertainment. Also festivals have lots of singing contests. I learned singing at an early stage because we have casettes, multiplex, karaoke, cd videoke in the house back then. My father sings so i was exposed to it as well. My only question is that among the 4 of us children, i am the most musically inclined. My siblings though can sing a tune, they are not really the kind you would push to singing contests. :). Singing is like sports to me esp when i hear other people come to our house and sing well. Exposure to music at an early age helps i think. I have nephew i sang everytime to make him sleep since he was a baby. Now he is four and loves singing. Like you can really tell theres a talent growing. Im happy. Im not ready to be a stage uncle tho :D

@ 6:30 I guess it becomes a lifestyle in the Philippines and pass it on generation by generation. Singing there is part of inuman (drinking sessions), family reunions, school's activities and even in your own bathroom. Music is everywhere! As young as fetus you are, you already exposed to music. My mom does not sing (but can carry a tune) likes to listen to songs. She got tease by my relatives (father side) because they never heard her singing voice since we're musically inclined.

Filipinos doesnt care if you can sing or not as long you're confident, we will cheer for you.

It is common here in the philippines when it comes in occasional or non occasional this session is only for jamming we don't need to go in high class bar to be jam. We need only in our home together with the friends and neighbors. That's why when it come in singing contest we have highly expectation especially in national television.

My brother doesn't have a good voice... He's always out of tune but singing at a videoke made him an "average singer "and became on tune as time goes on. Truly, practice makes you better. And also, we always have a favorite song to sing in a karaoke session wherever it is.. and that makes us be able to sing a certain song like we own it...

I dont think thats true. I dont think its dna. Theres a lot of people here who cant sing not just 5%. There are more people who cant sing here than those who could. Those that can sing are encouraged to perform and had a lot of practice from karaoke or church choirs. And filipinos look up to artist who have powerful voices like whitney houston regine velasquez mariah carey so I really think its more of our culture rather than dna. I’d be an exception if having gifted voice is innate in us. Plus if that many people here could sing then no one would cheer and be wowed by these great performances.

As a Filipino, I believe it became part of our culture when we learned Harana and Kundiman. We learned that singing is a way to show our emotions, so we developed it as part of our coping mechanism as well, that to release stress, instead of shouting, we just sing our hearts out. No one would mind us, or get angry at us, and ask questions when we're just singing even if we're really bad at it (some neighbors would if it's really late at night but not very often, they would come to your house and tell you to stfu) 😌🙌

filipinos are good at singing because they have a lot of time to practice and hone their talent or develop such talent due to constant practice, try to do this karaoke thing in the UK or US expect the police to arrived and order you to stop what your doing because your neighbors are complaining about the noise, but not in the Philippines specially if there is a celebration like birthdays, baptism, even a simple promotion from work filipinos loved to celebrate almost every special event in their lives, and mind you, the neighbors here are not complaining instead most of the time they even joined the party. sometimes when the celebrations happens till dead at night, just let everyone sings happy birthday and all the neighbors will understand and it will be okay for them

we filipinos cant live a single day without singing or humming a song..every move we make we unconsciously sing or hum our favorite or what is on trend..from morning to night..we have songs for every little thing we do say for example,,waking up, a little stretching and we sing mag excercise tayo tuwing umaga..then if a farmer goes to work he would sing magtanim ay di biro..when doing the laundry we sing labadami labango.. while cooking especially vegetables we sing bahay kubo while preparing different kinds of veggies mentioned in the song.. even washing dishes has the song kabula kabula kabula ang joy..(an advertisement for dishwashing liquid) while getting the kids to sleep there are lullabies in every own dialect.. then we have songs for the church worshipping God song.. songs for wooing or courtship the legendary Harana..songs for in love couples pangakao sayo, songs for broken hearted,there is what we called break up playlist, songs for moving on after the break up,,there are songs for shattered, taking revenge..songs for weddings, birthdays of course, even for burial we have that . songs for every occasion you can think of..we love singing,,be it belting or just chilling vibes..we have plenty of songs all filipino songs..and for every celebration we never miss the karaoke..we don't care if the food is good or the drinks are scarce as long as theres the mic and the karaoke machine works at its best every occasion becomes happy celebration.. (please excuse me for my poor English)

It's part of the Philippine culture that every celebration there's always karaoke. Most households do have karaoke so when they're doing something like performing chores they will be belting at the same time. There were also many karaoke or singing competition in the Philippines. Families do encourage their kids at a young age to music by watching on TV and listening to the radio.

fun fact: air supply used to be and still the standard for the male filipinos... as the legendary divas for the females like mariah, celine, whitney, barbra, etc.. your children should sing the songs at those standards or else they will just look ordinary. imagine, if your child is singing christina aguilera, adelle, karen carpenters, barry manilow, etc. they are just considered ordinary.. ... reminds me of a few years ago, my parents visited the province where she's born. Silago, Southern Leyte. When they came back home, my father said 'We were only there for two days, but I couldn't fall asleep comfortably." I asked him why and he said, "Your Ma's cousins and neighbours kept singing and drinking until 3AM!" Although, there's electricity in the province, said neighbours were only using an acoustic guitar. My Ma said because that's just how it is. Even way back in the 1950s. In my father's province Sorsogon, they used to play bandurya (Bandurria), to pass the time. That's how he learned to play guitar. Just by watching his neighbours and friends when he's younger. But doesn't know how to read guitar chords.. Thank you once again for an informative reaction. Love from the Philippines!

Filipino loves to sing.. They do "Harana" before.. Used to record in casette tapes.. Always had music in vhs, vhf.. Then, we had a trend of karaoke. Next is the madness of videoke machine all over the small sitio or baranggay in the Philippines.. And now, with the apps and social media

Talented Pinoy singers ussually depend on listening to the original artists once to be able to immitate notable performances. In reality they soak themselves in the original melodies to sound just like the original artist or better. Brilliant. Nickname Ting.

you see, I had a neighbor who's sounding like a crying goat last year when singing karaoke, then after a year, I thought i was hearing a local radio song playing from them but It was the same person singing karaoke. so we always encourage people, bcoz we know it will just take a couple of months/year to be able to sing eargasmic sounding humming birds of asia. can't even describe. 😌😆

Last New Year's Eve, we had a karaoke session in our house. Usually there's someone in a gathering, your go-to-guy who sings perfectly. In our family it's my son-in-law and my granddaughter. And they both have a repertoire of songs that they both sing perfectly well. I can sing, too but I was better when I was younger. Many Filipinos sing to make a living but for most, it's a hobby, just a part of everyday life.

it's true though, I learned how to sing because ever since I was a kid, my family encouraged me a lot, and it's a bonding time for us. Singing makes us happy. It doesn't matter if you're good or not, it's fun.

Unfortunately, I am an example of a Filipino who doesn't sing well. But that hasn't stopped me from torturing others during karaoke. And you guys are correct; as a rule of thumb, we Pinoys are generally encouraging when it comes to singing. 😊

So very true. Tribes have not just their own territory, but even tribal wear, colors, design. Ethnic musical instruments already in use go along with dancing! To this day, these tribes or indigenous peoples are being encouraged to preserve all these traditions, customs, culture!!
