Why does the US have so many child brides? - BBC News

Angel was 13 when her mother forced her to marry and start a family. "I felt like a slave," she says of her childhood.
While countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi and El Salvador have recently banned child marriage, it remains legal in the US - and half of states have no set minimum age below which you cannot get married.
For the BBC's America First? series the BBC's Aleem Maqbool is exploring health and social issues where the US, the richest country in the world, does not perform well in international rankings.

Almost as soon as I turned 13, my mom told me to drop out of school and get married. My mom never made it past elementary school and got married as a young teen. But even after being in one dysfunctional/abusive marriage after another, it was like she wanted me to follow in her footsteps. I was being raped already by my own dad. I eventually ran away from home, I graduated high school and became the first person in my family to get a college degree. When I finally married I was 30 and married the man I fell in love with. We've been together 15 years now. To this day I am considered an embarrassment in my family and am not welcomed to family gatherings. I was even left out by my family at funerals. This is the part of America people don't know about.

I don't get invited to funerals because I married outside my race. My maiden name is Johnson, if that doesn't tell you how white I am then I don't know what will. I was ostracized as soon as I introduced him to the family. My family is as backwards as yours though, so it is what it is.

The worse part is that these child bride are not co consider adults, their husband is now their legal guardian. So, let’s say an 11 year old girl is raped by a 20 yr old man and she is pregnant. He marries her and is not have the legal right to make all of her medical decisions, education decisions, ect. So, this 11 yr old can have a baby and be married, but can’t make choices about her own education, about getting birth control, or medication, ect. The rapist makes all of her choices, legally. Let that sink in. The rapist now has all of the power over her and the child and people justify it by saying, “oh, it is what is in the best interest of the baby.” Not the 11 year old, the baby, cause the baby is more important than an 11 year old being raped over and over again by her rapist.

Ivy Ruonakoski that is an argument for the courts to decide. Depending on the state the marriage of the minor may be fully legal. Even if the marriage is legal, a husband can be legally punished for raping his wife if the sex was nonconsensual. Sadly, many of these girls are young and do not know their rights nor what is really going on. Their parents "marry" them off without any care for their well-being. These girls are scared and dependent on whoever takes care of them. Remeber when you were 13-16? Even though you thought you were mature, you were still dependent on your parents to take care of food, housing, clothes, etc... that dependency is transferred to the husband. So out of fear, dependency, confusion or whatever, these girls are unsure of how to react to save themselves. Hence why their parents and husbands can take advantage of that and force them to do things that they may not want to do.

I'll give you my theory: in every society where men's opinion counts more than those of women( the whole world, with SOME isolated matriarchal villages) there's no interest in punishing ( for real ) a crime that most in the ruling class ( a.k.a. men ) feel entitled to perpetrate. They also made the fun " lock and key " analogy - do you know it? I bet you do. ( I have a fun one too: " engine and piston " ( it's more complex, and men may not be able/willing to understand it ) which I doubt will ever be accepted...

"legally sharing their assets means that both parents can support the child they were clearly old enough to make. It protects the mom from being left holding the bag." UHM i know you're probably not supporting child marriage at all, but if you think about what you just said, that's kind of fucked up. teenage pregnancy is an epidemic in the U.S, especially with so many states allowed to decide what to teach their students. some barely receive any information about safe sex, and end up with 3 kids by 18 even without their parents forcing them to. schools need to educate kids about how to NOT end up ruining an innocent child's life. bringing a child into the world you cant care for is extremely reckless. you can have a child as young as like, 10, 12 years old depending on the person. no, being old enough to make a child doesnt mean you're old enough to take care of one. that type of thinking is why kids like this get forced into shitty situations, because their parent's didnt know better because THEIR parents had them at 15 years old with no education, passing on decades of misinformation and biased opinions. i hate seeing things like this happen. Some people get angry and offended that teens have sex and end up pregnant, i get offended when they think they're capable enough to raise a child, when they aren't even capable enough to use a condom, birth control pill, iud, the shot, female condom, fucken pulling out, plan B...there are so many options.

Also, Somali child marriage has risen by 100%, Somali men fly from the UK to Somalia with a Girl, to get married. Yeah, we're not in a position to laugh at America, when we are just as bad, if not worse.

I think her point is "just because" a person is married, Americans silence their judgement about teen pregnancies. If a 15 and 17 year-old got married and had a kid, although it is wrong, most Americans would say "at least they are married." The societal conditioning that marriage and kids go together regardless of age could be why so many child marriages happen. If a 15 year old says she is married, many don't ask the age of the husband. We likely assume he's just as young as her... not that he could be 30!

is a cultural thing. Basically, is this idea that a non-virgin would not be as desirable to a potential husband, because a "woman" who has "had a man" outside marriage is a slut, a temptress, evil, easy... . Therefore she would be condemned to public shame and of course blamed for being attacked in the first place ("you provoke him"," the way you talk", "you should have known better," blah blah blah). Additionally, given the year, in general a woman had less option in terms of work and education to support herself, therefore getting a husband became the crucial option to supposedly avoid hardship and ostracism.

Jaspreet, as a native Briton. I agree. Behind the lands of milk and honey in the West, there's a hidden culture amongst the elite. This is a paedophile culture, Hollywood and the music industry specifically are big into it. Watch these videos on youtube - Sun Sea and Satan by Pie n Mash and also Jimmy Saville and the 9th circle by Redpill Phil. This goes on, because the populations of the West are so conditioned, we only listen and see what we like to listen and see. And when we see something paedophilic in 3rd world countries, we always have a "it would never happen to us" attitude. Because as nations, we've become oblivious to anything and everything that we don't want to hear, which is why there are hate speech laws in Europe. They're slowly making it all normal to society.

Let them cohabitate until they are 18, and then decide to get married. We already have laws that hold the biological father financially responsible, even if he doesn't want to remain in the company of the mother and child.

wolfcat87 Laws are not there to prevent the 99 times something doesn't go wrong, they are there to prevent the one time it does. The concept of underaged marriage is widely used by teens who want to get married, but it also provides a legal framework for parents to pressure their children into marriages that they shouldn't be in. This is a descision that will impact the rest of your life farther than any other descision. And thus it has to be legally impossible for anyone to make this choice for you. Not even your parents.

Alex Larson Idk know about all, I think that the key here is forced. I think too that anyone who is getting married earlier than 18 voluntarily and under no pressure should really consider what they are doing but I don’t know that they should necessarily be stopped. Especially with pregnancy in the mix I think if you are going to raise a child then you should probably be able to make such decisions for yourself (although at that point I think they legally are considered emancipated minors so there might be some legal distinctions there anyway)

We do have the law, at least. But millions of girls in rural areas are forced to marry as soon as they hit puberty. Laws alone don't help. But the government does have a child helpline on which everyday children or others call to report impending marriages, and officials are able to stop some. But parents and society are devious and they get the children married at night. And once married, the union is held legal despite the legal age for marriage being 18 for women and 21 for men.

@@spartangoku7610 So child marriage in India is illegal... The age was pushed around 10 years back to 21 years for both men and women. It also became legally harder and more enforced to have child marriages. This lead to a drop from 46% back in 2005 to now less than 3% in 2015-16 and that has fallen even more. However the number of people getting married between the ages of 18 to 21 is still at around 26% as of 2015-16. Also, what the last person said about the police being corrupt and letting it happen, may have been true in the early 2000s. Now not so much. The law is enforced and enforced strictly. And it has to be, because there are non governmental organizations that work in cohesion with the government to ensure rules are being followed and stuff like this doesnt happen. The beauty of living in a democracy is, press freedom and when stuff like this comes out into the open, heads roll. I would like to point out, that it also has alot to do with religion. Child marriages which were once the norm amongst Hindus back in early 20th century and even later, are now looked upon as a social taboo. Women are far more empowered in the Hindu community and even more so in the Sikh, Buddhist and Christian community. The Muslim community though, is a different beast all together. Child marriages are still prevalent amongst Muslims (not all, but a few), they are harder to detect and if prosecuted by the law, they'll complain of minority segregation and selective targeting of Muslims, which will ironically draw condemnation by Human rights groups and Amnesty International. And well, ever since Muslim migration to Europe increased, child marriages have now become the norm in places like the UK and most of Western Europe.

People saying that they were unaware of this problem. I don't know what bubbles you're living in, but here in Kentucky this is a relatively common practice. Many pregnant girls end up married here before the age of 18 as a way to preserve the family unit, values and reputation. My great grandmother was 14, my grandmother 17, my mother 19, my best friend's mother 15 or 16. Granted we were one of the dark red states on that map, but it is a prevalent problem and one more common in religious and conservative communities.

Sort of continues with the notion one needs a large family to survive. Look at Catholic families especially with Hispanics. Live long and prosper i guess? Most states require that both members be 18 or older in order to get married with their own agency. Under 18, and a parent's consent or judge can allow it in spite of the people in the couple not being legally old enough to decide for themselves. Often times, not only is the parent consenting to the marriage, but the parent is the one demanding that the teen be married, even against the teen's own wishes, due to a teenage pregnancy and antiquated ideas of what the "right thing to do" is.

The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights actually put a full stop at the end, which gives even further protection. In Australia, trust me if this was happening, it would be found out and every adult would be arrested who is involved in it and jailed. The children would be taken from them, also any other children they have, and they would Not be seeing those children again. When the children become of age, if they wish to visit their parents, they would be adults, but, at least they would have been de-briefed out of that mentality. They would have lived normal lives, and if they did want to see their parents? They may be talking to them on a phone with glass in between while they are still rotting in jail.

Hypocrisy is the word you'e looking for. USA, as known for a long time, are experts in this area. They KNOW this is wrong, no need to question that when they will go the extra mile to point out relativaly mild flaws in the laws of other countries, but they're to stubborn to change themselves, the world has to follow them and not the other way around. They will not bow to their apparently "stupid" morals and ethics.

Seriously, put the kid up for adoption, abuse an 11 yr old mother and a predator rapist father really can’t be a good home environment for any baby.

@BloodRider 14 Unlike Zimbabwe I haven't heard any cases where the government has stepped in and confiscated farms from whites and handing them over to blacks who don't know anything about agriculture. That is here in the U.S. The regime of president Mugabe is a dictatorship and racist towards whites. They created their own economic hardship by stealing farms from thier rightful owners and handing them over to people who don't even know how to run them. Zimbabwe may or may not have underage marriages but I seriously doubt that this country is any example of real development. If so why is it such a pisspoor 3rd world nation? From I have read this country was actually better economically and politically when it was run by the white regime of Ian Smith. Then it was known as Rhodesia. This country has declined in quality after Mugabe took over. So it's a damn poor example of development. More a real case of degeneration.
