It looks like all the streets in that neighbor hood are named after mountains. As well as Mt. Vancouver st , there is Mount Everest, Mt. Ranier St, Mount Vernin, etc. I think its kind of a coll idea to name a bunch of streets after mountains.

The trade off was not Vancouver Island or the portion of Vancouver Island south of the 49th parallel versus the portion of Washington State under dispute including Seattle. The overall dispute was how to divide the entire Oregon territory which extended as far north as the Alaska panhandle. So, the division of territory ended up being much more equitable than you have presented. At the time, the American President was using the slogan of '54 40 or fight' and wanted the entirety of the Oregon territory for the United States. Incidentally, I visited Port Renfrew, British Columbia this past September including the pub that you mentioned. This is nothing more than a tiny village on the edge of absolute wilderness. A beautiful spot in the temperate rain forest. There is a bigger 'Renfrew' in Ontario, about one hour drive from where I live.

About that Northwest Angle, that Indian tribe sent a envoy to the American President and the Governor General of Canada desiring the border be drawn as it was. That Indian tribe desired the lake to separate it from the US Cavalry, and a border from the Mounted Police. That land border being an extension of the Manitoba/Ontario border through the lake. Point Roberts is just an omission, not fully surveying the border. The 49th Parallel was chosen as a convenient compromise equally distributing the Prairies/Great Plains agricultural land. And as for your completely STUPID concept of Indian tribe lands, there weren't any, not to mention many of the tribes were nomads that migrated with the buffalo. None of the Indian tribes considered land property like the Europeans. And don't forget America and Canada disputed Alaska's border as well even though it was settled between Russia and the UK with the Treaty of St. Petersburg...

Simply put, the UK (Hudson Bay Company) desired Vancouver Island plus the mouth of the Fraser River whereas America desired Puget Sound and access to it leading to the division of the Strait of Juan de Luca. Later there was the pig war over the San Juan Islands... Seattle/Tacoma grew due to two transcontinental railroads which served it, the Great Northern and Northern Pacific. The Union Pacific had a rail line to Portland and San Francisco/Oakland. Both were built a decade before the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National which served Vancouver. Without the railroads neither Seattle or Vancouver would have grown as large as they are now... Frankly, the railroads were the largest spark in both nations west.... There are only two east to west mainlines in Canada over the Continental Divide, and now only five mainlines left in the USA.

A lot of roads in the Philippines are still named after American names from the colonial and commonwealth eras like Shaw, Taft, Gilmore, Roosevelt, etc On the other hand, there are also residential subdivisions here that like to maintain a theme for their street names. These themes are usually fruits, vegetables, insects, local names, famous heroes, names of provinces, names of US presidents, names of US states, names of countries, and more. Most of the time, the theme is purely just because they want to name all their roads that way lmao

As someone based in Vancouver that has looked into electoral district A it truly is the most confusing of all electoral districts in the province. The university makes it have really weird statistics while the outlying areas of Barnston Island, point caraholly and the small privately owned islands off the west Vancouver coast make it incredibly confusing. Literally no one knows why Point Caraholly is part of it, even the museum and elected representative have no idea.

This dates from the 1866 merger toycat mentioned where the town of Victoria and the British Vancouver Island colony merged into the town of Vancouver and the British Columbia colony, Victoria was the biggest city in the united entity so it became the capital and has even ever since. Later of course British Columbia joined the autonomous British Canada dominion, and eventually independent Canada.

The Philippine street you mentioned is a street in a subdivision. A "subdivision" is what Americans would call a suburb or a gated-community. A subdivision is masterplanned with all relevant shared amenities like streets, parks, utilities, sport complex are constructed by the developer. The developer usually sells the land as individual lots. Although you are technically free to build whatever you want, usually the developer will set up rules and guidelines on how your house is built. Things like minimum budget, house design and architectural style can be under the scrutiny of the developer. Usually the developer will put certain themes like houses should be mediterranean design, or modern design or whatever. They also adopt certain naming conventions for areas within the subdivision. The street you pointed had probably assigned a street name following a thematic rule of street name should be mountain names. The other streets of that area of the subdivision probably has mountain names too.

I'm from Portland OR and you hit it spot on. They also have no property tax (kinda like council tax in the UK) in WA where we do in Oregon. So Vacncouver is literally a win win win. Sadly though many vancouver residents end up working in Portland so they have to pay Oregon income tax cause thats where they earn the income even though they live in Washington. Doing your taxes in the US can be loads of fun as you can imagine 😂

From North Vancouver here, expect rain and traffic this time of year all over the lower mainland. If you go into downtown avoid everything east of abbot to Clarke, and from Powell street to terminal. That’s our brutal homeless zone and it’s best to just avoid the area entirely unless you’re there for transit reasons. The rest of downtown has skids but it’s pretty gentrified and nice. On Main Street you’ll find some nice breweries if that’s your thing. North van is also good for breweries, food, hiking and outdoorsy stuff, west van is like the local Beverly Hills area where all the rich people live but it’s fun, check out ambleside park, lions gate bridge, the sea wall and kits beach. East van/Commercial drive is cool and has lots of stuff to do, Queen E Park is also nice, kitsilano also has lots of great food options. Canucks tickets are pretty cheap right now too if you’re into experiencing hockey Overall don’t expect to have beautiful weather while you’re here. expect a lot of rain at any moment, grey skies. dress appropriately for it and you’re in for a good time.

As a person that doesnt live in vancouver but drives through the area often, the whole entire area is often referred to as "lower mainland" which incorporates all the cities near vancouver + hope Really each city is, practically, its own city with a downtown core and then a sprawling outskirt, just so happens that their right next to each other. Honestly i find that bc's geography is quite interesting

Eventually Vancouver, WA residents do sometimes get tired of traffic on the I-5 bridge between Vancouver and Portland commute. Even though it is close, you still have to spend 10 minutes or so on the freeway. After a few years it becomes a trade of of having convenient access to Portland or saving money if you visit enough. The light rail extension politics from Portland to Van is an interesting thing by itself.

I grew up in Victoria, BC, and way back when, it was the Capital of Vancouver Island Colony and the largest British port and Pacific Naval base (in Esquimalt, greater Victoria, still the location of Canada's Maritime Forces Pacific HQ). New Wesminster was the capital of the colony of British Columbia, but when the colonies "united," Victoria was the obvious choice as the capital, as it is to this day. Vancouver (originally called Granville) eventually grew to be a much bigger port city once the railroad was completed, as it connected Vancouver to the rest of Canada. Both Vancouver and Victoria are located on the unceded traditional lands of various Coast Salish peoples, as are many lands on the other side of the settler border, proving, as you said, settlers just put a border wherever w/o regard to the people already living there. Edit: on another note, much of BC, all of Washington, and Oregon (as well as Idaho, and parts of California and Alaska) make up Cascadia, or the Cascadian bioregion, which has a lot of similarities culturally and politically, even on both sides of the settler border. I was born in Tacoma Washington, but moved to Victoria at 5, as my mum is Canadian, so I kind of know both places. Victoria is very Canadian, and Puyallup/Seattle is very American, yet both are still so Cascadian.
