Why does South Africa want to deport Zimbabwean residents? | DW News

Nearly 200,000 Zimbabweans were granted residency in South Africa in 2008. Now the South African government is trying to kick them out.
In a case that could decide their fate, human rights groups have asked the court to stop the government from doing so. But the clock is ticking, as residence permits will expire at the end of June.
DW’s Christine Mhundwa met a teacher in Johannesburg, who's hoping to remain in South Africa.

They did not lay a lot of foundation for their asserted motive (but maybe it's a well known issue there???). It is true, reducing immigration does not inherently mean xenophobia. But at the very least it appears a bit exploitative, bringing in cheap immigrant workers then taking away their ability to become citizens. Dangling a carrot, then taking it away at the last second. It seems reasonable to have to uphold their end of a tacit agreement (and at least guarantee application) after someone invests so much of their life.

It's like justifying apartheid because it was etched in law. Any government can choose how they want to interpret or apply the law, so yes this all stinks of Xenophobia and thats exctly why they will loose in a fair court of law because their argument or reliance of "immigration laws" is not alligned to the Constitution.

We cannot be a social fallback for the entirety of Southern Africa for another 15 years. So many people coming here are unable to pay taxes, yet still make use of our public facilities. It’s simply not sustainable. If you possess skills which are in crucial demand, and you comply with all immigration requirements, you are welcome to join SA and contribute. In 2009, SA Government granted Zimbabweans DZP following socio-economic and political situation in Zim and they were categorised as asylum seekers. The DZP were valid for 4 years (Renamed ZSP in 2014 and in 2017 respectively as ZEP) ....and went on to be renewed accordingly until SA Cabinet decided not to renew them in November 2021.Given the historical background of these permits, there is no where the host country commits to issuing permanent residence permits ifo ZEP holders and that is also not provided for in the laws of RSA. Zim Government (Number 1 Lithium rich country in Africa) is not actively involved in this because they do not want corrective voices. Why can't these guys take their own Government to court in order for it to create similar employment opportunities for them and force SA Government to support them. These guys have a compelling case against Zim Govt not SA Govt: Sometimes lawyers fail to win cases because they present good facts to argue wrong cases.

I think your analysis, while coming from a valid standpoint based on what is available for you to know, is a bit disassociated from reality. For example, say you cancel the ZEP, do you think that the affected people will leave SA, or they simply add to the pool of undocumented immigrants who operate outside the system? What is the purpose of not extending their regularised stay? Why not start by deporting the larger pool of undocumented people? I think it’s just a populist decision that will make things worse for everyone.

If our country focused on precision and valued service, we probably by now would have been the richest country in the world. Point is, we have to believe in ourselves, we have to chuck the past and focus on the future. We have to value our own personal life and beliefs, without it effecting our neighbours. As an immigrant living in South Africa. I don’t think South Africa is being xenophobic for taking this action. Several years ago they did the same to Angolans living In South Africa. However I must mention that according to the South African constitution the only law they have breached is forcing Zimbabwe nationals to leave the country immediately where as in their constitution it clearly states under the circumstances where a foreign national is no longer permitted to live in South Africa he needs to be given enough time to decide the next country of choice. ACTS 130 of 1998

I feel like the government will just keep extending it until the heat dies down and then just let them stay until the next time people are generally upset with the government, then the government will try to shift blame to Zimbabwean nationals living in South Africa as a way to get out of their failures expecially with the high unemployment rate here.

That's what leads to sporadic attacks because of refusal implement laws which are there. As a result we end up with Zimbabweans in our prisons for horrendous crimes. Importing poverty whilst you're incapable of handling own poverty and unemployment leads to animosity. It'd be negligent to extend this permit.

Yes this could very well be true cause decisions are made in parliament but at the end of the day they live amongst communities who no longer want them in the communities not even the government can do anything about that next thing you see chaos in the country and citizens retaliating.

There is no Law that binds the country/Government to issuing a permanent citizenship/residence. South Africa is just thought of as a bread basket when it is our Home. The gentleman's concerns are for his family in Zim, could care less about the jobless in their home country. If Zim was my home I would have tried my best build a life as others try or do because Zimbabwe is not empty...

As a South African, I think it's fine for them to remain in South Africa provided they are paid the same salary as South Africans. South African teachers earn a good salary and would not need to wait tables as a side gig. Allowing Zimbabweans to be exploited like this teacher will keep South Africans out of the job market and this fuels tension and Xenophobia. The real perpetrator is businesses that exploit foreign nationals.

@@youngmajali9523 Fresh air is my smoke of choice. I also get high from reading and education. The law of SA says foreign nationals can only be hired if there are no SAns to take the job. Businesses deliberately offer low salaries and SAns refuse those jobs for obvious reasons. This loophole allows companies use foreigners as cheap labour because no SAns are applying for jobs that pay too little. The moment you offer high salaries for all nationalities then SAns will apply for the jobs and they will automatically and the law will be in their favour.
