Why Does My Retwist Unravel? | What is a Retwist Really for...

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I am going to be talking and sharing my thoughts about what a RETWIST really does for your hair. You also wanted me to elaborate on why does your retwist unravel. Basically why the root doesn't lock. A lot of people think that retwisting is what makes the hair dread but that isn’t the truth as you know people who Freeform don’t re-twist and they still have dreads. So the question is what is a re-twist really for and what does it do in our locs. I will go deeper into details in this video.

    Locing happens regardless of a retwist or not. Locing is a process and that's why its a journey. I think that social media makes it seem so difficult but it really isn't. I have had to learn this myself and just let the process happen.

    I agree. The hair is gonna lock anyway the way that it wants to lock. This is what I am noticing in my journey and considering just freeforming. I am currently semi freeforming anyway. I was doing 6 month retwisting using the interlock method and currently started my 1 year trial of which I am 10 months into and it is working for me. My hair does not grow much outside my locs and any loose hairs I just wrap around the loc. I guess I have to do something to remain groomed but retwisting is not very necessary. As Elizabeth says it is mostly for the look. Even with interlocking a space remains that has to lock on its own.

    Suggestion: the entire “retwist” culture needs to pump their breaks... our hair will lock regardless. Everyone’s hair is different so the time that it takes to bud & lock can take a couple of months to two years... retwisting is MAINLY for aesthetics, why the obsession with “neat locs” 🧐which is an oxymoron in and of itself. Locs are that style that screams “let me do what I wanna do😃” a lot of women embark on this loc journey and never drop the former standard of beauty that most of us were conditioned to embrace, so they freak out if they see frizzies, shrinkage etc🤦🏾. This journey is spiritual for some, strictly fashion for others, so there’s that, but if hair health is the focus, your sexy with this look will unfold regardless✌🏾

    I want to thank you for being so honest. I was a person that said in the very beginning that I wouldn't have a ugly stage because I thought I was too cute, but later in my journey I started to feel insecure and have bad days. But I'm still enjoying my loc journey and understand that everyday with locs may not be wonderful.

  • @mndegrassi8
    @mndegrassi84 жыл бұрын

    I never attack someone when they say ugly stage because I know exactly what they mean. It's a very awkward stage because you're dealing with shrinkage you might not be used to, your hair isn't really twisted or coiled anymore, but it's also not loc'd yet so it can be weird to handle. I've been wearing my locs covered since starting my journery 10 months ago and I don't feel bad about it at all. It's not that I am ashamed or embarased of my hair at this stage, but because it's not long enough for me to do any styles that I like. No lenght is not all i care about and that's not why I loc'd, although that isnt a bad reason to loc'd your hair. I figured instead of pulling and tugging at my hair which might be causing breakage just to try to force it into a style that it can't go in, I rather let it rest and grow under a wig or head wrap until I can COMFORTABLY style it without risking breakage. However unless I am out and about, my locs are always out and loose so it can have a chance to breathe because wearing any style in excess without a break can potentialy cause damage. Please don't let anyone tell you how to embrace your locs. I wear my hair covered under wigs when I'm out, but still embrace them everyday when I get home and snatch that wig real quick off lol

    I totally get you. I only wore my hair out about five times. Other than that I'd wear a snood over my head or a beanie or my wigs till I got 1 year locked. after that my hair started behaving( hanging) and so I really didn't stress about covering my hair like I did before, plus my wigs don't fit anymore. like you, when I get home first thing I would do is let my hair breathe. Lol. I still try to cover it from harsh weather and dust though.

    Wow! This helps me ! I thought I wasn’t good at retwisting lol even though my hair is growing well and the rest of it is loc’d. But, my roots do not stay longer than a week 😩

    Thank you for this. I actually don’t like retwisting my hair. I’m 7 months in and they make them look neat and thin.

    Thanks because I am about 8 months into my journey. I love my hair and I can tell people wonder why my hair looks like it needs to be combed lol but they just don’t say anything. I thank you for talking about retwisting I went twice and I felt like it was too tight so now I am just going to let it do what it do. I thought retwisting would lock my hair

    Same here. I'm trying to do this on my own and avoid a loctician because I hate tight hair! I'm just gonna trust the process and forget about a retwist lasting

    What do you retwist with? I have 4c hair and sweat in my hair ALOT. I just hit 5 years and it's long but my edges stay a mess. I have been working from home and keep my hair tied down. After about 1-2 weeks I have 2-3 inches unraveled, on the first 3 rows. I only use water and oils to retwist.

    Whats a normal amount of space to have at your roots? Is it ok if some of my locks are fully loose except the ends?

    Can we have an update on your daughters hair please. I’m new on my journey but I also have soooo much space in between my roots and “loc’d” portion of my hair and I’m sorta discouraged about it. Just want to make sure it’s happening correctly as I started and am maintaining them on my own

    Thank you so much. This question. Has been bugging me a lot. I have locs now for 3 years. no matter the twist… it still Untwists after several days! I was under the impression that twisting it is what’s a making it lock! so if I decided to not retwist anymore… will my locs lock up even in the growth area? wow. Very hard to wrap my head around this . So the locking will happen on its own from the bottom up? Wow. It’s like a science.
