Where all my white people at?! It's no surprise I was less enthusiastic than most folks about La La Land, but Razzle did not know that before we started recording a commentary track for it. One of em loves it, the rest are on the fence. Will I convince them it SUCKS?! (Kidding, I don't hate it.)
Plot (via Wiki):
While stuck in Los Angeles traffic, Sebastian "Seb" Wilder (Ryan Gosling), a jazz pianist, has a moment of road rage directed at aspiring actress Mia Dolan (Emma Stone). After a hard day at work, Mia's subsequent audition goes awry when the casting director takes a phone call during an emotional scene. That night, her roommates take her to a lavish party in the Hollywood Hills, promising her that someone in the crowd could jump-start her career. After her car is towed, she walks home in disappointment.
During a gig at a restaurant, Seb slips into jazz improvisation, despite the owner's (JK Simmons) warning to only play traditional Christmas pieces. Mia overhears him playing as she passes by. Moved, she enters the restaurant and observes Seb being fired for his disobedience. As he storms out, Mia attempts to compliment him, but he brushes her off. Months later, she runs into Seb at a party where he plays in a 1980s pop cover band. After the gig, they walk to their cars and lament wasting a lovely night together despite their clear chemistry.
Seb arrives at Mia's workplace, and she shows him around the Warner Bros. backlot, where she works as a barista, while explaining her passion for acting. He takes her to a jazz club, describing his passion for jazz and his desire to open his own club. Seb invites Mia to a screening of Rebel Without a Cause and she accepts, forgetting a date with her boyfriend Greg (Finn Wittrock). Bored with the latter date, she goes to the theater and finds Seb as the film begins. When the screening is interrupted due to a projector malfunction, Seb and Mia spend the rest of the evening together with a romantic visit to the Griffith Observatory.
After more failed auditions, Mia decides, with Seb's encouragement, to write a one-woman play. He begins to perform regularly at a jazz club, and they move in together. Seb's former bandmate Keith (John Legend) invites him to be the keyboardist in his new jazz fusion band, which will give him a steady income. Although dismayed by the band's pop style, Seb signs on after overhearing Mia trying to convince her mother that he is working on his career. The band finds success, but Mia knows the band’s music is not the type of music Seb wants to perform.
During the band's first tour, Seb and Mia have an argument; she accuses him of abandoning his dreams, while he claims that she liked him more when he was unsuccessful. Two weeks later, Seb misses Mia's play due to a photoshoot he had forgotten about. The play does not go as well as planned; few people attend, and Mia overhears dismissive comments about her performance. Unable to forgive him for missing her play and their previous argument, Mia breaks up with Seb and moves back to her hometown of Boulder City, Nevada.
Seb receives a phone call from a prominent casting director who attended Mia's play and invites her to audition for an upcoming film. He drives to Boulder City and persuades her to attend, which she reluctantly does. During the audition, Mia is asked simply to tell a story. In response, she sings about how her aunt, a former stage actress who eventually died from alcoholism, inspired her to chase her dreams. Seb, confident the audition was a success, encourages her to devote herself to acting.
Five years later, Mia is a famous actress and married to another man, with whom she has a daughter. One night, the couple stumble upon a jazz bar. Recognizing the logo she had once designed, Mia realizes that Seb has opened his own jazz club. When he notices Mia in the crowd, Seb begins to play their love theme on the piano. A dream sequence unfolds in which the two imagine what might have been had their relationship thrived along with their careers. Seb and Mia acknowledge each other with a silent exchange of smiles before she leaves.

I've noticed that most musical theater fans dislike La La Land, while people who usually hate movie musicals love La La Land. I wonder what the reason for this dissonance is.

Biggest issue in my opinion is that this movie is trying to work in the musical theatre/musical movie idiom without actually doing a great job at a lot of the key elements: the dancing is mediocre, the singing is often not great, the lyrics are Pasek & Paul's usual garbage, and the music is trying to force modern pop harmony into Great American Songbook stylings. The filmmaking is very good and the leads' acting performances are superlatives, but all those weaknesses pile up and are more obvious to musical fans

I will preface by saying I’ve actually never seen this movie in full ever. But I would say that in some ways instead of a musical it feels like a movie with music. Like the way old Disney movies weren’t musicals but instead had 1 or 2 songs and that was it (and yes I understand there are more than that in this movie). But it still does just feel like a movie with music rather than a musical. Personally as a musical fan I just had no interest in seeing this music so I have no harsh feelings toward it

@@AUMOTmusic as much as i'm kind of an outlier because i'm not a theater kid(heavy metal guitar, versatile bass player)city of stars is really the only part of it that works, and it works amazingly but unfortunately its constantly shoved down our throats for most of the movie when it really should have just been at the end. the full ending version still makes me cry, but if the rest of the movie had the quality of that last 10 minutes it would have been much better.

I think it's mostly that La La Land lovingly satirizes the old style of musical like Singing in the Rain and kind of winks at the camera to be like "oh see that's the point is that modern life is so more embedded in shades of grey so they don't get their happy ending and the singing and dancing is this 90% quality, Ryan Gosling isn't supposed to be a knock you over with how good he is at singing!" and that's awesome I really like it but actual live theater has evolved past that and made fun of it or subverted that anyway... so it's nothing new but if you have a special fondness of what La La land subverts it's even more polarizing.

Although La La Land is my favorite movie of all time, I can agree in the respect that Whiplash being an almost complete 180 from this can put people off. Love the commentary as always, much love and support SAG!

It has a different vibe that sets apart from many musicals and is simultaneously a love-letter to Los Angeles, a city that for all its drawbacks is near and dear to me. Like everything its paying homage to, I can just go and watch the better version instead. In ten years (tbh even now) I don't see anyone pointing to La La Land as one of best 2000s musicals. There's something about WSS, Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris that this movie just does not have. It feels like the entire runtime is convincing you it has IT and it just doesn't. it took me a couple of rewatches to like the film as a movie lover tbh because my biggest take away from it is how much of a call back it was to old hollywood and the city of dreams. films used to be very casual, romantic and had a hint of immortality that everyone wanted to reach. and yet this one hit you with a more modern mix of tragic reality where no one really gets their happy ending together but apart because of how hard the industry can actually be. as much as i wanted this film to end with them together, the bittersweet aspect made it linger on my mind. really visually pretty and fun but the whole ‘THATS LIFE’ made me upset cause come on i use movies to escape reality not get hit with it again😭

Like cinematography was absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed some of the choreography, costumes and a couple of the songs but the rest? I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I stand with Eric that I went expecting high energy in La La Land and was disappointed with how lowkey it was. I went to watch it with my family and my dad literally fell asleep, it was boring to us, but it's not bad by any means.

Yeah, I always saw La La Land as the musical that casual people that don't usually like musicals would love, but I was wondering how a musical hardcore fan would feel about it

I literally just watched La La Land for the first time like an hour ago and went, “it was good but I didn’t really love it.” I have never been so heard by a KZread video title

Personally speaking as a filmmaker and musical theatre lover, I felt the same way as Eric when I saw this film. La La Land is phenomenal on a technical level, the cinematography, direction, and performances are great. But I never really cared for the music, the song sequences, and the story for that matter. Unpopular Opinion, I think Steven Spielberg's adaptation of West Side Story was infinitely better than La La Land. It felt like an old school music with a few modern updates, but stayed authentic to the genre it wanted to be. While still being a technical marvel with its direction, cinematography, production design, and song compositions. I think the issue for me is that La La Land is a film that tries to emulate elements from older musical films, but the music and modernized setting just doesn't catch my interest. People like to shit on The Greatest Showman, but I'll always prefer to listen to "This is Me" over "City of Stars."
