As one whose French and Norwegian grandparents came to the US. I do not think the French military is known for strength, France is known for not increasing its military size. It's primary criticism is in fact that it's goal is maneuverability, not raw power.

Last time I checked, American weapons (a huge portion of weapons bought by European Armies) were payed with European taxes. Call me crazy, but I think paying to the American Industrial military complex a good portion of the pie of our Defence Budgets is rather the opposite of being subsidized by America.It is literally the other way around.

With very few exemptions, NATO countries have been scamming the US taxpayers, getting them to subsidise their defence. The fact the a country buys weapons from the US is pretty irrelevant to their net spend.

I’ve tried saying this for a long time. People mocked me and my source is literally from the NATO website of member nation GDP spending between 2014 and 2022. Out of 36 nations, only 9 met the agreed upon 2% GDP, and only 3 of those were major economies (US, UK, and Poland). Countries like Germany and France were far below those 3, and in those 8 years never exceeded at 1.54%. The US subsidizing the EU is why they’re able to spend 4+ times more on their healthcare than their military. They really don’t like it when you tell them that though.

We, as Americans, have many questions about the money but are kept in the dark. But it is "our" money being spent or given away. Plus, we see domestic needs not being met. Obviously, these things do not add up. Maybe we will never get the info we need, but we should never assume that the right decisions are being made. It is more likely that wrong decisions are being made. The US should not be paying a penny to subsidize the EU.

You can’t have it both ways, you can’t be the leading military in the world but also not use that military to influence the world, that’s weak . If you let Russia take over European states and expand their influence they will begin taking your position in the world and you will be rendered a smaller power. If you don’t want to get involved in Ukraine and Europe then live with the consequences: Russia will overtake you. This isn’t about European militaries ultimately, this is about the USA and do they have the bottle to knock Russia back down?

Should the world court in The Hague and international laws be abolished then? I know here in Canada we pay the USA to protect us (thank goodness!!) and we’re all part of and pay into NATO and NORAD (Canada, Europe, USA, countries with common goals, et al.) I don’t understand what that would look like worldwide, and it scares me to think about conflict without the USA being our Big Brother.

Ukraine were prepared but because USA, United Kingdom and Russia asked Ukraine to give up their nuclear weapons, armaments and power in the Budapest Memorandum this agreement kind of screwed Ukraine over. Russia betrayed this agreement while the world just allowed it to happen. 2014 Russia illegally annexed Crimea. If Ukraine still retained its nuclear weapons armaments etc do you honestly believe Russia would ever have invaded Ukraine ? Sorry to say but this Budapest Memorandum that USA, UK and Russia asked Ukraine to agree upon screwed Ukraine over badly, this was a bad deal for Ukraine and now Ukraine are paying for it. As I said, they were prepared they just got screwed over.

The US military is in 189 countries around the world, not counting US Marines at embassies. America is on the losing end of this deal.

After WWII Europe couldn't defend themselves because of war damage. NATO was needed. Today European countries are well off and capable. Europe should be militarily self sufficient. The US needs NATO too so the treaty should still exist but the US should not have the greater share of the burden

As a Dutchman, I agree that we should do more to maintain our army. The past governments in the Netherlands have neglected the army, which means we are now very dependent on the USA. Fortunately, with a new cabinet in place, we will spend 2% of our GDP on the army (which is the NATO standard), but to catch up on the arrears in the army in the Netherlands and Europe, I think that 2% is not enough.

I’m British, and I hate to have to admit it, but our government has slashed our military budget over the decades, and continually wasted borrowed cash and taxpayers money. For example, train lines that can’t be completed because of poor planning. We should work as a partnership with the United States, as we do in some aspects, but financially we all know who puts in to defence, and who doesn’t. This applies to Europe too. Britain, same as America, should get their priorities right. If we are a team, we should chip in at a proportional rate. With that said ❤❤ We are self efficient ( loosely) and we love your culture and feel we have the most in common. I am a regular person, and although it don’t count for much, I would like to say, and on behalf of my family “Thankyou USA”

My father, Uncle, cousin, grandfather, and great grandfather were all career military men with myself serving in the USAF from 1999-2009. In our experience during the Cold War and after the European man has become a coward and behaves more like a woman demanding American men defend him while going online and criticizing how we defend them, oh and they refuse to pay for much of anything either. Europeans, look for your own defenses, get some skin in the game!
