I have been trying and failing to get into the F.D. for almost four years.... I’ve worked my butt off to train for the CPAT and refused to give up. Your videos have inspired and educated me as to what to expect and that it’s not easy, but completely worth it. I’m happy to say I got a phone call this morning from the chief scheduling my panel interview :) thank you for the videos. It’s truly helped.

This really is the hardest question. When i was asked in academy, I knew I wanted to be one for the simple reasons of helping people, but there are so many other factors that go along with it. AND when you answer this question, there is always another question of "why" and if you arent prepared to answer it, you will make yourself look real dumb real fast.

Depending on where you live, the classes may vary but you want to focus on meeting the minimum requirements of local fire departments. Here in San Diego County, being an EMT is the first step. Since you're 17, you may be able to join an Explorer program to get some great foundation experience. Check in with your local departments and see if they have one. Good luck!

Remember when you did it for the camaraderie, going to fires and kicking butt, getting the job done and helping out where you could, making things work with what you had. Working together as a team. The joking, laughing and scratching? And believe it or not, feeling good doing it for others you did not know. It was something you didn't have to "think about" or read a hand-out at a job fair to decide. You had a thick skin because you had to live with different personalities and you didn't cry because someon offended you at the station. Remember? Now it's about your space, pay, time off, being some bad-ass, having the most arrogant attitude. Being firefighter used to mean humility. At least that's how I remembered it 20 years ago.

as a firefighter, i can tell you that the job IS dangerous, there are many hazards, especially for search and rescue, MMK clearly has no idea what hes talking about, dont listen to him, hes just a roofer...... is every call i respond to life threatening? maybe not, but it could be, you never know, theres a reason we are called, and its NOT because the situation is now a safe environment, we make it safe AFTER dealing with the dangers.

For me to be a firefighter is more interesting than my current college and class, I studying environment engineering(BS), but at least for me it's better to help people directly and in critical situations which need some especial passion. Plus I have been always choosing to be volunteer to do jobs, some college mates laughing at me cause it seems to be such a freaky decisions to leave the college and go for training and..., but I do cause I think it's right BJ.

Is it really THAT difficult to become a career firefighter at a fire hall? I've been entertaining the idea of becoming a firefighter for a while, and I've already given up many other dreams of mine. Becoming a firefighter is the first realistic/practical career I've though about. But I keep hearing it's very difficult to get employment. I'm just sick and tired of being told that I can't do anything I'm interested in in my life... One thing I thought about... the baby boomers are retiring and/or dying out, so i'm sure there will be a lot more job positions opening up in the next 5-10 years, not to mention there are a lot more people taking on trades these days, on top of that I have both Canadian and American citizenship, so I certainly have more options than the average person. I really want to go for it and was thinking about applying to a fire academy. Do people think I have a good shot, or do you think it's still going to be very hard? I don't care if it's difficult, but if it's unlikely that I'll have a career as a firefighter, i should probably put my time and money into something else... unfortunately nothing else interests me.

why do I wanna be a firefighter? to save people life, even if the paramedic comes, can they help the person that is trapped at a house, and there are all fire around it? so firefighter job is to save people, the paramedic live is to save people for the second part, if there are no first part, can the people be saved? and I've dream to become a firefighter when I was a kid! my mother said that I cant never be a firefighter, because she said firefighter is no use, the doctor is more useful, so I said to her, firefighter save the live first, they put down the fire, they saved people that was trapped. so for short, I just wanna see people lives, and save people, and for one last thing, I hate it when people call me hero, because im not spiderman, im not Captain America, WE ARE FIREFIGHTERS! WE SAVE LIFE!!

The job is safe, if you follow the rules and keep up with the skills. But otherwise, it is one of the "potentially" most dangerous jobs out there among "first-world" countries I'd imagine. The smoke in houses is becoming more and more toxic as we use more plastics and polyurethane upholstery. Some of the gases produced can kill you in a few breaths. Also buildings are being constructed lighter, which means often they collapse much sooner. It is a safeish job. If you know what your doing.

Well, you're probably get to help people. But if you're actually getting paid well you're probably not going to be helping that many people. The pay scale of fire departments is the inverse of what is logical. The more busy and dangerous the department, the less you get paid. If you want to actually fight fires and go on brutal medic runs you're going to have to apply somewhere like Detroit Fire. But if you want to make 120k per year you can do that. You'll just never (ever) see a working structure fire and the worst medic run you'll get is probably the rare fatal car accident. And you'll have to do a lot more busy-work around the station. I hear people who have this job absolutely hate it. But the low paying fire jobs are actually pretty cool. You're just making 35k while being shot at and will gradually die from cancer from all the smoke you inhaled during decades of actually doing the job.

Why did I "want" to become a medic?... I hate being a medic. I never wanted to do that job. The only reason I think any of us do it is because it's required of us to remain firefighters. I've never had a more brutal or thankless job in my life. Being a paramedic is the worst job I've ever had. And I've had a lot of jobs that people would consider way worse.

*IF* you can even get any sleep. Sure, we're allowed to sleep at the station (after 9 p.m.) but that's not likely to happen when you have people calling 911 every 5 minutes for tummy aches and various other abusers. It's like being tortured for a living. Imagine just starting to fall asleep at 4 a.m. and then the phone rings and you've got to rush to someone's house (lights and sirens) because they farted and want to tell a doctor about it... I'm not joking. 98% of the calls are literally this stupid. The 2% that are serious usually turn out bad because there's not any ambulances available because so many people are abusing the system. So if your grandma has a stroke or a heart attack and it takes 45 minutes for an ambulance to show up you should blame your dispatchers for sending your city medics / firefighters out to thousands of stupid calls. Believe me. You call, we come. Doesn't matter how dumb it sounds on the phone. Doesn't matter if the dispatcher *knows* it's bullshit. You're going. And there's nothing you can do about it. Sleep at work... I wish. Instead we're locked in a state of perpetual jet-lag. All for that sweet, sweet 14 bucks per hour.

Want to help the community? Have you started right now? You don't need to be a FF to start today. Wanting to be a FF is way more than that. Like cleaning toilets and being ordered what to do? Getting up at night 4-5 times and being exposed to hepatitis C (no cure and contagious). Cleaning the station and cooking for 15-20 guys? Crude jokes? I you answered no to any of those, then you need to look elsewhere for a career. Just my opinion.

It would be hard for me to say i do it for myself; but thats the truth, i personally want to preserve human life even in great peril, because in short is part of me... However handing out this explanation in a world of machismo will get a person ridiculed, and thought of as sellfish. First responders continue their jobs due to their compassion, typically, and unlike some misguided people believe.

This is the question that I have been trying to figure out if I should answer with blunt truth. Anyone have any advise? My reason in a nutshell is I am 36, when I was 14 the gangbangers at my school put 2 guns to my head and told me basically Im white so I must die. So I said F this and never went back to school again. I let my grandfather who was a teacher die thinking that I was a punk drop out. I barely told my mom what happened 3 years ago when I decided take FF classes. Should I say this?
