Why Do We Have More Boys Than Girls?

Ғылым және технология

Most human parents-to-be assume that the sex of their child comes down to a flip of the chromosomal coin, with an equal chance of having a boy or girl. But in reality, the odds aren’t even -for every 100 girls born, the world gains about 106 baby boys.

Also nature noticed that its ok to let us die a lot, because you really only need that many men for reproduction. One man can theoretically father 100s, one woman between 1 - 10 realistically speaking, ofc over approx. 20 years of fertility a woman could have up to ~23 pregnancies if shes constantly pregnant and with some "luck" there could be several twins and threelings, so could be as high as ~35 kids, but thats an extremely unlikely outlier. As men we are kinda expendable to nature up to a degree concerning the continuation of our species.

@@idiotpringles6924 I believe many more men would do their clothes shopping if there were actual clothes to buy. I think the lack of clothing for men in common retailers has something to do with the lack of clothes shopping men do. Like I walk into a clothing store and find my way to the very back corner to find 2 different styles of trousers, 5 block coloured shirts, 2 different basic jumpers and some underwear. I then get to select from a size of S, M, L or XL and none of them fit. So over the years I have realised that going clothes shopping is a complete waste of my time and have grown to despise clothing stores.

For any evolutionary effects the current status (environment) has to be stable for at least 50 - 100k Years lol ;) We don't live even 100 years with equality etc. :D and i don't think we will be stuck in the 20th/21th style of living for the next 100.000 years ;) Society is evolving to fast for natural evolution to take a hold. We started using fire rughly about 1 - 1.5 Mio years ago. Due to cooked food our jaw bones shrunk and our wisdom tooth became unnecessary (and sometimes Problematic because of the smaller yaws). Yet we still haven't lost them totally after over 1 million years of fire usage... We walk on two foot for even longer, yet female reproduction hasn't evolutionary catched up with this, hence we have a much higher mortality at birth than other mammals. Also as long as there is no selection taking place in favoring a certain pheno/geno type, there is not much evolution going on. In fact due to our sheer number and high gene transfer between populations (no isolated populations) we are basically stagnant. And rember the above mentioned time scales... Even the most isolated people today on earth won't have no gene transfer from outside for the next 500.000 years.

As far as I know from looking at population diagrams, in countries without major conflicts, it reaches a 1 to 1 ratio only at around age 50-60. So not when people start having kids, but when they stop having them. I'm not an expert tho.

Steel Inquisitor Not ENTIRELY true. While its normal and needed for a healthy child, some genetic disorders directly sprout from the sperm or egg carrying one extra X or Y chromosome. Its not seen as often in humans, but it happens quite frequently in animals. Male Calicos are an example of this. The Calico gene in cats is strictly a X gene and recessive, meaning females, whose XX chromosomes make the gene appear, are the only ones that can be calico. But when a XX Female Calico is born with an extra Chromosome, a Y, it ends up being Male and almost always sterile. In terms of humans, look up 'XYY Syndrome' or 'Jacob's Syndrome'.

It's also theorized that Y sperm (which makes boys) are faster than X sperm (which make girls) which means they are more likely to get to the egg first. Unless the couple do the deed way before the woman ovulates because the X sperm live longer than the Y sperm. So if the couple do the deed early before the egg arrives, then the Y sperm may have died off before the egg came leaving the longer last X sperm to fertilize.

Me, a Chinese: because we used to drown daughters Edit: One child policy meant exactly that, though with exceptions (rural areas can have another child if their firstborn is a daughter, some people pay a fine, others just don't register the birth of a child, etc). Boys are always favoured over girls in almost all human societies. In Chinese society, girls aren't even listed in the family tree called 族譜. Daughters marry into their husbands' families, so in a sense if a couple has a daughter, they're raising a wife for someone else to carry on their lineage. It sounds crude, but that's the way of thinking. Of course, not everybody thinks like that, otherwise there would be no daughters.

Part of the problem is that certain cultures prefer having boys then girls, only to have a lop sided gender disparity. Many asian countries have far too many males than females which causes many issues that only take a second to think about.
