Why do we have hair in such random places? - Nina G. Jablonski

Discover how humans lost their fur as they evolved from primates, and why we still have hair on our bodies.
--
We have lots in common with our closest primate relatives. But comparatively, humans seem a bit… underdressed. Instead of thick fur covering our bodies, many of us mainly have hair on top of our heads- and a few other places. So, how did we get so naked? And why do we have hair where we do? Nina G. Jablonski explores the evolution of human hair.

Male pattern baldness is a result of genetics and hormonal interactions; it probably spread through the human gene pool either because hair loss occurs too late in life to majorly affect reproductive success, or because it gave younger men the appearance of age, wisdom, and experience, thereby making them desirable to some women.

That's the reason orangutans have such long hair. They live in tropical rainforests, so don't need the hair for warmth. It also protects them from the sun. Interesting factoid; their hair doesn't effectively insulate them against cold so orangutans in zoos have to spend most of their time indoors during winters in colder climates, or they can become hypothermic very quickly.

Many animals have a carotid rete network (blood vessels surrounding the brain in order to rush heat away) that allows them to directly cool their brain by panting. Their body temperature can get much hotter than ours without any damage being done. Humans (and all apes) lack a carotid rete network which means their body temperature and brain temperature are linked. In order for us to maintain a safe brain temperature we have to cool both our body and our brain together. Fur offers insulation from external sources but it also traps heat in the body. That is why none of those animals you mention can run for as long as humans, they overheat. The way an animal previously evolved (i.e. whether it evolved a carotid rete network or not) informs how new adaptations will evolve (become "hairless" and increase sweat gland numbers or not). Head hair keeps our head cooler than if we were bald but it requires less sweat to maintain the same cooler temperature. So, in reality it allows us to save water since the head is directly exposed to the sun during midday.

So I was at the salon the other day. I always am trying out different experimentation so this time, I decided to narrow down my thick eyebrows into really sleek lines and curvy from edges. Just like many of you must be thinking that it's a "women's rights" to have sleek/thin eyebrows, the hair dresser also reminded me of that by saying "sir, it will look like a lady's (eyebrows)". Meanwhile, just a few days back... Boom! I discovered a girl in my old acquaintance list that she has thick eyebrows as similar as mine. Or probably due to the lockdown, she must not be getting anything done and her eyebrows grew dense. I'm not judging her at all. IMO she looked just fine. Just indicating that women do have thicker eyebrows but everything is so culturally diversified and have created so cheap stereotypical and sexist distinction, that we can't be ourselves (i.e. women can't have excessive hairs) and we can't try different looks/experiments (like the one I mentioned above). You'll be reminded that you're a guy or a girl, so do what from years have been going on made as a rule by don't know who. There should be an educational video to explain this societal norm and reason for distinction or no distinction.

I find plucked eyebrows and shaven bodies less appealing when it comes to women. I'd have to be really fond of a person or already bonded with her to like that sort of thing. It's no surprise then that I also find make up off putting, especially if it is excessive. Natural all the way!

I wonder about science sometimes. If we lost hair so we could sweat better, why do we still have hair where we sweat the most, the armpits, groin and chest? And what do they mean when they say 'when our ancestors ventured outside, they grew hair on their head? Outside from where? We certainly didn't roam around at night. The tigers owned the night. We were always outside during the day. Anyway, some interesting bits about hair follicles. Lots to think about. I give it a B plus.

Great summary. But I must make a correction on an important aspect. The unpleasant "body odors" are not the result of smelly humans that just so happen to stink in only a couple of areas. And some of us don't "stink" more than others simply because of individual secretions. Pheromones are indeed created uniquely, person to person, and are in ways like a fingerprint, but our sweat gland secretions only stink when external bacteria feed on them, giving off their own effulgence (stank) as a byproduct. So a person who is well-groomed and regularly washed does not give off radiant, identifiable nastiness. This only occurs if colonies of bacteria are allowed to grow to pungent levels. A temporary situation for sure. Again, this is an important distinction. Keep the bacteria to a minimum, and you can sweat all you want without frightening small children and, well, everyone else. Fall behind on your hygiene and anti-bacterial methods, and even a light dusting will send your closest mates running for the hills...

I’ve always believed we evolved for endurance because it allowed us to chase down to great lengths a wounded prey until it died. The hair loss aids in cooling by exposing more sweat soaked skin to the air, eyebrows keep sweat out our eyes (as well as for facial expressions), hair remained on our heads to protect our heads, beards actually channel sweat to our core areas and also shade the sun from our chest, bipedal motion uses less energy, breathing control is needed for both running and swimming and this also eventually helped in our development of pure speech 😎
