Why do things exist? Setting the stage for evolution.

This video kicks off the evolution series by going broad and thinking about why things - including non-living things - exist at all. The first in a series on evolution.

Love the simulations! The pace is good. I would say a big issue (not just with this video) is that quantitative modeling can be very abstract (e.g., how should I think of a birth rate? What part of the system does this control?). Personally, I would love to see graphs alongside the frame-by-frame simulations, since that's the standard presentation of this kind of data. Walk-throughs of the equations were OK, although I think you can spend more time helping people develop an intuition for why the equation makes sense. For example, around the 3:20 transition, looks like you assume people understand what you mean by equilibrium. Also, why should we expect the overall population to stay the same if birth rate = death rate? You should try to anticipate audience confusion. As an example, it's common for people to look at a graph of overall population and think that no more organisms are dying or being born because the overall number isn't changing, so explicitly walking through the system more would be great. Nice job :)

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. I do wish I had made equilibrium and the equation more concrete by utilizing some of the visual space to actually show creatures or remind folks of the meaning of the variables while discussing the equation. Lessons for the future. Thanks again!

They’re calming, interesting and funny, and I’m happy that I’m not late to the party on this one and there’s still lots more to be uploaded. Without rambling on anymore, thank you. I liked your comment, however I will make a remark that religion (theism) neither explains why things exist. The hypothesis of "stuff exists because some god created..." crushes immediately when you''ll ask - who created god and why god exist. If you give answer - god exists because it is the god and existing is just a property of the god- it is actually exactly the same as to say - universe exists because it is universe and existing is just a property of matter. Sometimes it is better to admit that at this stage (if any) of human evolution we don't know for sure WHY, instead of cheating ourselves with fake.

@@cenaalan5825 Exactly! When it comes to the unknown we (as humans) love to justify things. This is my justification! It's good to have the thought why things exist... the reason things exist is because it's good at existing! This thought is sort of from this concept in the video 0:55 It of course doesn't explain why it began existing but explains why it's continuous which is an important thought. As for the universe, the reason why it's existing is because it's not good at simply being nonexistent, if it was; it won't exist. It's stating the obvious but if something doesn't exist, it doesn't exist; it's all based on perception. One could claim that existence ends at death (losing perception to the world), the literal perception itself is ending, cutting the connection to evidence for perceived existence. Of course time goes on after your own existence, but what does that mean to a perception after it has ended. All I'm saying is that justification is based on perception, whats existence without something to perceive it, which is why human perception is important to the existence of everything!

well yes and no. "Why things exist" and "how things were born" are not entirely the same. Evolution explains how complex organisms can exist without a long lifespan. Non-living things don't have evolution therefore they can never be as complex as a living organism.
