Why do they go North In Frostpunk?

Ойын-сауық

At a glance the setting of Frostpunk makes no sense. If the world was getting colder, why would they ever decide to go into the cold barren north rather than south where it should be warmer? But could there actually be a logical reason for it to be there?

    Actually, the fourth (if not the most important) reason that they decided to build generators in the north was that it was mentioned that these carefully picked construction sites have underground heat sources. Noted in The Last Autumn that when constructing the core of the generator, the player is given the choice to either: seal off the heat source, leave workers to die, or to use evacuation. The underground heat source is what actually the generators are running on, not just coal. In fact, it is implied that coal is used to distribute (via steam) the massive heat bellow. Though it is not proven that the north are really the only places with heat sources on earth, but apparently IEC only decided to operate in the north most likely because they only found suitable locations in the arctic.

    oh, makes sense now, it is probably places with some volcanic activity. And that is why the generator is so big and pipy (and actually makes sense, because it is much more efficient to just burn coal in the houses instead of gigantic central location).

    That plus the fact that the Arctic at the time was a very untouched area of Earth, which means materials would likely be more abundant and can ensure long-term survival. Along with that, regions where it's normally warmer were woefully unprepared for what was coming as temperatures plummeted.

    They did give a few reasons. One, being that the north has animals that you can hunt that won't immediately freeze to death. An other, being that it's getting globally colder, and it's the 19th century. Southern places aren't developed enough to take people from the north. Or able to build the generators. If you have the choice between building the biggest technical miracle of your time closer to home and in secrecy, or building it in a colony that is not even used to sub 0 temperatures it kinda makes sense

    The game states that for whatever reason, the apocalyptic cold weather is coming from the south, with snowfall in India having been an early sign of how bad things were getting. One possibility is that it’s simply coming from the Antarctic and moving across the entirety of the Southern Hemisphere and into the northern hemisphere and another possibility being that volcanic ash is the cause, meaning that the cold weather could even be originating in the tropics. They even state that the big storm approaches your city from the south, so I think that probably the reason they go to the arctic is that as hard as it is to believe, it’s actually the warmest place to go in their circumstances

    To me it only makes sense by 2 means: 1 - equatorial countries just don't have access to technology so these heat reactors are impossible to build there, so what good is it for you to go south if eventually this snowball earth 2.0 reach equator and you got no reactor and no fuel for it. 2 - All life in the tropics is not used to the ice age of this magnitude, so even if Africa or S.America are cauldrons of life now if all life there is gonna go extinct you starve, Arctic life is the only one that's got a chance to survive and North is the only place it'll proliferate.

    If you paid attention to the game's story (and the loading screen hints) it says that the South was the first to fall and this cooling was taking place globally, there was nowhere warmer. The IEC (Imperial Exploration Company that was responsible for studying climate change) built these "arks" in the North, a region of the world that has already adapted to a freezing cold climate that would better accommodate people if proper shelter was built, and there was an abundance of coal underneath the ice for people to use to fuel the Generators with.

  • @evilboy3521
    @evilboy3521 Жыл бұрын

    The Generators were built by the IEC, which is a state-run british company. They may not have had permission, legislation you name it, to build in the south. They seemingly are the only people who built the generators, which means there may only be generators in the north. Then you take into account that the north has tons of coal deposits. Then you take into account that "the freeze" started in the south. This theory is from another dude but also sorta mentioned in the game once, the sun is up waaay longer in the north than in the south. And there you have it the explanation as to why they moved north, and not south.

    From one of the final notebooks found in the new home scenario as the storm encroaches on the science expedition ending in their having gone into the storm to try learning more, there is reference to a kind of upper atmospheric inversion where extreme weather systems from the upper atmosphere were being forced down to the surface, something incredibly wrong with earths magnetosphere (hence the strange light and electrical anomalies during the storm). These windstorms were strongest at the equator and as seen with the storm, chased towards the poles during this atmospheric inversion event. So it wasn't just the cold they were fleeing.

    That's a good point it might be worth doing a longer video to explore it but I'll summarize the key points here 1: The governments had no idea how cold it would get they just knew it was getting colder, and as such, arctic wildlife would fare better with a colder climate than temperate wildlife 2: Outside of the storms (which are established to be cold weather anomalies not normal weather) you rarely see temperatures below -60C which is a realistic temperature for the arctic during a normal winter let alone a global ice age 3: Small artic wildlife like foxes and hares don't even shiver at -40C with a proper winter coat; if the temperature dropped too low they'd likely just burrow and hibernate. There is a realistic possibility that they could survive the cold but they would likely starve long term without summer thaws; Life always finds a way though

    Actually the temperaures in the game are surprisingly warm. I mean, you know that here in Russia, there is the city of Yakutsk and temperatures there fall below -60°C in winter? Ecosystem of Taiga somehow manages to pull through... And organized settlements and mines were formed there as far as Russian empire, when there also was no electricity nor central heating. Not even mentioning the indeginous people, who live in tribes and herd elks. I don't even understand how they surcived without any central heating in their yurts in temperatures even colds. It's like they live in Frostpunk but in real life and without a generator. Modern cities in there, wih the central heating stations, actually pretty much serve somewhat like the generator in Frostpunk, it's crazy! Anyways, the temperatures in Frospunk are too warm, which makes me think that there was no actual catastrpphic extinction event... Too warm. Those survivors should learn from Eskimos to build ice house instead of wood house😂😂😂 They should equip scout and expedition team with Huski dogs and ski boards 😂😂😂 staying inside that pit was also a bad idea -- Where Do You Get Fresh Water?????😂😂😂 How they handle human waste? They have scientists for the Ark but they forgot to bring solar panel and wind farm? Natural Gas? Also, imaging there is a snowside coming toward the pit 😂 I think they should find a cave for survival instead of a pit

    I honestly came to the same conclusion and it only made more work for me I probably only had about 100 subs when I first made the video and I was given advice that the channel needs more branding/personally so I was still testing stuff out but I still like the video overall so I won't take it down

    You’re not a fan then lol. It literally says within the food tutorial “Arctic Animals” meaning they live in -20-40 C weather most of their entire lives.

    What part of it is bad? Like the art design or rigging? I'm still experimenting with the channel so everything is a work in progress. Any honest feedback from the community is welcome

    @@RoninFoxSpeaks the rigging is a little janky and the art looks like its in 420p while the background is in 1080p, its pretty deep in the uncanny valley. if you look at other vtubers with similar models you can get an idea of how to avoid that.
