Why Do Starlings Flock in Murmurations?

Few things in today's world cause us to pause our technology driven lives, and just look up. But if you noticed a dark cloud darting across the sky, assuming a variety of different shapes and movements, that might just do it. No, you're not tripping on psychedelics, and we haven't fooled you with computer graphics. These are real, and the science behind them will blow your mind.

*You literally just said that something causes them to move and they in turn bump into each other. That’s not what’s happening. My eyes aren’t lying to me. They’ll murmur just for the sake of murmuring in random cities without any predators being around. Quit bothering me.*

I agree. I’ve read that scientists are not certain why starlings do this. The Most common reasoning is that murmurations form for protection, to make it more difficult for a predator to pluck a starling from the group. Others argue that that is a weak and simplistic theory. Why, then, is the murmuration performed at about the same time every evening, and always before settling down for the night? Why not simply land when it’s ‘bedtime’ and avoid the risk of a big ol’ display of flesh and feathers. Why advertise like a darting, live billboard the nearest eatery? “Exit 47, chick-fowl-A!” I prefer the theory that the airborne ballet is a ritual that inspires awe by accident, without makeup or dress rehearsals. Without the ego of a leading man. A dance the starlings can’t help but do. That they can’t see their beauty makes it even more powerful. Murmurations are literally breathtaking to me. Sometimes I don’t realize that tears (of joy? Of yearning?) are streaming down my face. I watch and rewatch these videos when I feel out of place in my skin, in my family. When I’m lost, alone. I return to the whoosh of millions of wings like it’s home. I rise with urgency, with relief, and breathe again.

These birds have been violently exterminated because they are deemed invasive species. The last murmeration I saw was around 2016. They kill lawn pests, sing nice songs & remind us the power of congregation. However they chase woodpeckers out of hollows to steal the nests.

@@ppietras97 I don’t believe in a “magical man on the sky” to use your exact words. There’s no such thing. You contemplate the wonders of evolution (a false theory). @@ppietras97 Who? You didn’t say whom you are speaking of. If you’re referring to the Roman Church of medieval times, I would agree with you. Research the Inquisition. That’s what happens when church and state unite. Persecution “in the name of God” is always the result. Biggest problem is it fuels criticisms from atheists. But God wasn’t responsible. Christianity was hijacked while basically still in its infancy. Nevertheless the critics have their field day with it and attribute to God what man is responsible for. Like war . . . Genocide . . . man-made viruses . . .

You are trying to scientifically describe something that goes far beyond science. THAT harmony is the power of the Holy Spirit. Baptism includes water, the link between them mimics water. If you understand how water flows and pools, then you get a glimpse of how the Holy spirit flows.
